This event highlights all that is good about today s teens. Teens from across the state will compete in 24 project areas. Winners will have opportunities for national trips, including National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, and scholarships. 4-H members with outstanding records of accomplishments during their 4-H career will also be inducted into the Tennessee 4-H All Stars. 2 Daniel Sarver State Staff Daniel Sarver is an Extension 4-H Specialist, with over 22 years of professional 4-H experience, having served the last 10 years in the Department of 4-H, Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications at the University of Tennessee. He is in charge of 4-H STEM, 4-H Camping, and 4-H Shooting Sports for Tennessee. Daniel was raised on the family homesteaded farm (est. ~1860) of rice, soybeans, and winter wheat in rural Acadia Parish of southwest Louisiana. The long growing season of South Louisiana meant that a large portion of the year (not to mention the day), when not in school, was filled with the work of the farm. Farming was not a hobby, but THE livelihood of the family, something quite unique to any youth raised in America in the last 50 years. Daniel was a 4-year officer of the Crowley High School FFA Chapter (220 members), competed in numerous contests, and served as President his senior year of , while earning the American Farmer Degree as an FFA member. After graduating from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Daniel started his 4-H professional career with the LSU AgCenter as an Assistant County Agent in charge of 4-H in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana in September, Daniel s nearly 13-year career at the parish (county) level included coaching numerous State 4-H winners in judging and demonstration contests, and 4-H record book (portfolio) competitions, sending several 4-H youth to National 4-H Congress. Daniel s early 4-H career focused on parish programming in teen leadership, camping, and STEM 4- H topics such as wildlife, entomology, livestock, forestry, plant science, horticulture and gardening, as well as conservation and electric energy. In 1997, Daniel earned the Master of Science degree from LSU with a major in Extension Education. Daniel was a graduate student of Extension Professor, Dr. Satish Verma, at LSU; and a summary of Daniel s Master s thesis, A Comparison of Lafayette Parish High School 4-H Students Perceptions of a Worthy Youth Organization and the Parish 4-H Program, has been published in the Journal of Extension. Daniel enjoys camping, hiking, and gardening; and is a sports fan of the Houston Astros and New Orleans Saints, having seen Peyton s Dad, Archie Manning in action. He has been married to his college sweetheart, Paula, for 26 years and has two sons, Stephen, 23, and Jacob, 20. Daniel can be reached at dsarver@tennessee.edu or

3 Needs Assessment Guidebook for Extension Professionals The Needs Assessment Guidebook for Extension Professionals (PB 1839) is being distributed this month via mail packets. Department heads, county directors, and regional directors are asked to share one copy with Extension departmental faculty and specialists, regional administrators, area specialists, and agents. The Guidebook was authored by Dr. Joseph Donaldson (4-H Youth Development, Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications) and Dr. Karen Franck (Family and Consumer Sciences) to provide Extension professionals with knowledge and practical tools for the three major needs assessment phases: exploration, assessment, and utilization. Methods for each of these phases are described including document reviews, individual and group methods, and how to communicate the needs assessment results. Appreciation is expressed to Dr. Laura Stephenson for managing the review process for this publication and to the in-state and out-of-state reviewers who provided useful feedback. Furthermore, appreciation is extended to more than 100 Extension professionals who attended the Be A Master Program Planner inservice in 2015 and 2016, used drafts of the publication, and provided valuable suggestions. This publication will increase Extension professionals competencies, strengthen programming, and ultimately improve outcomes for those we serve. 4 Roundup Service Project Delegates to the 2016 Tennessee 4-H Roundup and All Star Conference are being challenged to collect items to benefit children who are currently in the foster care system in East Tennessee. Currently, there are more than 400,000 children in foster care in the U.S., with many of those being in East Tennessee. Tennessee 4-H members are being asked to collect items which can be put into care bags for these children. Please promote this service project county-wide, not just with the Roundup delegates. For more information on this service project and to see what each region is being asked to bring, please visit service.aspx 4-H ALL STAR EXHIBITS Each active 4-H All Star member planning to attend 4-H Roundup and All Star Conference is eligible to enter a project exhibit in the 4-H All Star exhibit competition. This project completion is designed to provide 4-H All Star members an opportunity to showcase their project work and knowledge gain. Delegates who plan to enter the completion should bring their project exhibit board with them to 4-H Roundup. 5 4-H FUNNEL CAKE 5K The Tennessee 4-H Funnel Cake 5K, will be held at the Tennessee State Fair in Nashville on Saturday, September 17, It will support Tennessee 4-H and many of its leadership and citizenship programs. This 5K event is open to youth and adults! Join us for a race, support 4-H, AND get a complimentary funnel cake after the race! Tennessee 4-H provides opportunities for more than 180,000 youth. It serves youth ages 9-19 in every county across our great state. Youth can be involved in any of the 26 project areas, some of which are clothing/textiles, livestock, nutrition, and photography!
