I admire 4-H-ers more every time I see these alert young people applying head, heart, hands and health to better living for themselves and others. Now days when we are all disturbed about the rise in juvenile delinquency, we see the need for more boys and girls to share wholesome character and citizenship building activities. Here 4-H has a special contribution to make. Through 4-H, young people wherever they live learn by doing. They do things - make things - and grow things. They grow themselves. So let s help more young people in town, country, city and suburbia develop through their 4-H learning for living program. Ask your county extension agent how you can join 4-H or be a 4-H leader. Jimmy Stewart ( ) was an Academy Award-winning actor best remembered for movies such as The Philadelphia Story, Rear Window, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and the Christmas classic, It s a Wonderful Life. But did you know that he was also voiced national, radio spots like the one above -- about the 4-H program for National Week during the late 1960s? Stewart was just one of numerous movie stars, sports celebrities, television personalities, politicians and other famous figures who supported and promoted our fantastic 4-H program. Many of these celebrities had been in 4-H, had 4-H connections or just new about the good of this organization. Stewart s story is just one of the fascinating, historical stories behind National 4-H Week. Here s another: Would you believe that National 4-H Week evolved out of necessity? National 4-H Week began as a result of World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in many.continued

2 Page 2 changes in the United States. The focus on national defense took top priority. W. H. Palmer, State 4-H Leader in Ohio, took this need as a call to arms and organized a State 4-H Mobilization Week for Ohio as a means of focusing the attention of 4-H members on what they might do for national defense efforts. State leaders throughout the country loved the idea. As a result, the Federal Extension Service initiated National 4-H Mobilization Week which was observed annually in 1942, 1943 and The following year and each year since, it has been observed as National 4-H Week. The focus during National 4-H Mobilization Week was quite intense and full of purpose. 4-H ers were enlisted to assist in the 4-H Club war program. 4- H ers especially those living on farms were recruited and encouraged to produce food for rural men and women in the armed services. Additionally, these 4-H members reported to the public how their war-time efforts assisted in family food production, conservation goals and contributions to the armed forces. In the early years, National 4-H Week was held in the spring. Beginning in 1968, National 4-H Week is now observed the first full week of October, beginning with the first Sunday of October. Want to read more about historical National 4-H Themes? The National 4-H Week Posters? More recorded radio spots by movie stars, sports celebrities and other famous figures? Larry L. Krug authored a fantastic article on the history of this beloved week. Please visit History/National_4-H_Week/ to read and learn more. In 1943 the National Committee on Boys and Girls Club Work released a new enlistment poster, titled "Be A Volunteer 4-H Leader," printed in red, blue and black, encouraging patriotic rural men and women who are eager to do a challenging wartime job on the home front, to become 4-H leaders

4 Page 4 SRTLC 4-H CHOPPED CHALLENGE Shelby Brawner, Extension Assistant/Grant Manager On Saturday, September 22, 2018, almost 100 teens from across the southern region participated in the 4-H Chopped Challenge sponsored by UnitedHealthcare. The 4-H Chopped Challenge was held in conjunction with the Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference and teens had the opportunity to sign up in teams of four for the Chopped Challenge. Once teens arrived to the Rec Hall and put on their gloves and 4-H aprons, they were given a big 3, 2, 1 countdown to open their mystery box of ingredients. After discovering what was inside, the teams were allowed to use their phones for 10 minutes to think of creative ways to use their mystery ingredients, which were canned chicken, a lemon, sliced almonds, and fresh spinach. Once the 10 minutes ended, there was a time limit of 30 minutes to create and plate their dish. Teams had access to the open pantry, which included items such as butter, milk, eggs, spices, various vegetables and fruits, breads, rice, etc. All 22 teams prepared and plated their dish in 30 minutes! The teams created videos for social media that highlighted their dish and the process they went through. The judging panel for the Chopped Challenge consisted of five individuals: Sabrina Sammons from UnitedHealthcare, Heather Mullinix from the Crossville Chronicle, Will Dalton from State 4-H Council, Pam Barrett and George Thompson who are Master Gardner s from Cumberland County. The judging panel thoroughly enjoyed watching and tasting all 22 dishes. Each 1st place team member received a medal and an Amazon echo; each 2nd place team member received a medal and Bluetooth headphones; each 3rd place team member received a medal and a 4-H tumbler; and each team member who had the most creative dish received a medal. 6 Page 6 COUNT IT, LOCK IT, DROP IT EVENT IN ROBERTSON COUNTY Shelby Brawner, Extension Assistant/Grant Manager Tennessee is 3rd in the nation for prescribing opioids. In 2016, there were 1,186 opioid overdose deaths in Tennessee, which ranks Tennessee 13th in the nation. Reported cases of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) has increased in Tennessee over the past decade with the most common source of NAS from legally prescribed medication. Of the 1,493,549 youth under 18 years old in Tennessee, 23% live in poverty, and therefore, typically do not receive the proper education needed for substance abuse. In 2013, 19% of high school students in Tennessee indicated they had used prescription drugs without a doctor s prescription. This rate is slightly higher than the national average (18%). As of 2017, Robertson County had a population of 70,177 with 17,193 persons under 18. Currently, 5.01% of youth abuse illicit drugs in Robertson County. In 2016, Robertson County had 88,749 opioid prescriptions written for pain. This averages to 1,283 prescriptions per 1,000 persons. In addition, the rate of babies with NAS born in 2016 was 29.4 per 1,000 births. All drug overdose deaths in Robertson County were due to opioids in Tennessee 4-H partnered with the Count It! Lock It! Drop It! program to reach teens and adults in addressing the opioid epidemic. Count It! Lock It! Drop It! is a comprehensive community program for prescription drug abuse. The program uses lock boxes in safe locations within counties to allow individuals to properly dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs in a safe manner. This coalition was the first to bring the prescription drug issue to the forefront with the Tennessee Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (DSAS). These take back programs provide a means for all citizens to help reduce the access to prescription drugs for nonmedical use through local drop off facilities as well as home lock boxes for community members. Currently, the Count It! Lock It! Drop It! is present in 93 of Tennessee s 95 counties. On Friday, September 7, 2018, UT Extension Robertson County and Northcrest Medical Center L.E.A.D hosted a Drug Take Back Event for the Robertson County community. The event was hosted at the UT Extension Office with two local law enforcement officers present to collect the prescription medication. 4-H members greeted individuals and handed out thank you ink pens. At the end of the event, 65.6 pounds of medication was collected, and over 50 individuals were educated about proper disposal of medication.

Tractor Supply customers can participate in the 2018 Fall Paper Clover campaign by purchasing paper clovers for $1 or more at checkout. Each year the paper clover program generates almost $80,000 for county 4-H programs. Additionally, any county program that has club members, volunteers or county agent participate at their local store during the paper clover campaign may enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win one of seventy-five, $100 TSC gift cards. You can register for the sweepstakes here: landing-pages_4-h_4h-tsc.html. Participation can be anything from setting up a display table and project boards inside the store to having clubs encourage customers to donate.
