6 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The chief state school officer is the Commissioner of Education. These records include correspondence, audits, budgets, bulletins, reports, school census, applications, bonds, inspection reports, maps, blueprints, recordings, posters, publications, photographs and pamphlets. Traditionally, the Commissioner of Education has been an educator. The Commissioner is appointed by the Governor, is a member of the Governor s Cabinet, Chairman of the State Board of Education as well as Executive Officer of the State Department of Education. Of special interest are letters of complaint directed to the Commissioner by the Governor and various department heads. Other items of interest include memorabilia of the home front effort during World War II, information on integration of schools and development of various programs, building programs, and political publications. For further information see Record Group #91. All contents of this Record Group have been microfilmed and destroyed with the exception of the contents of the Photographs Series and the Recordings Series. In addition, a large folder of blueprints of the Tennessee School for the Deaf, Knoxville, Tenn. has been added to these records, located in map case #5, 8 th Stack. These are not on microfilm.
