All are warmly welcomed and invited to attend. Middle School Bake Sale The Middle School Student Leadership Group raised $210 for local children in care through a bake sale planned, created and ran by student leaders. The bake sale ran across two days of recesses and lunchtimes, beginning on Wednesday November 8. The representatives worked co-operatively to plan and co-ordinate their food and baked in their free time over the long weekend. Year 9 leaders sold cakes and slices at recess on Wednesday, with Year 10 leaders taking over at lunch, and both year levels helping out on Thursday. All cakes and slices were priced between 50 cents and two dollars. I would like to thank our teachers for letting us miss some class time to set-up and pack-up the bake sale, Mrs McLeod for letting us use the food tech refrigerators, and the Middle School Student Leadership Group for an excellent end to the year. By Macey Gillman State Athletics To view the monthly college calendar, go to the Calendar tab on the homepage menu. 2 Reflections Newsletter Congratulations to the students who participated in the State Secondary Athletics Day at the Lakeside Stadium, on the 23rd October The team consisted of Brylee Wilson, Maddy O Keefe, Ryan Cole, Flynn Hill, Adam Enever, Jessie Gerrish, Darcy Lindsey Kelsie Wilson, Talia McLaurin, Jessica Gillies, Meg Allan and Jessie Gerrish. 4 Galen IT guy awarded Apprenticeship Factory s Trainee of the Year WANGARATTA s Jesse Gardner-Russell is set for a promising career in IT. Jesse, an IT support trainee at Galen Catholic College, received the awards for the Trainee of the Year and Certificate III Trainee of the Year at the Apprenticeship Factory s annual awards night in Shepparton on Thursday, October 26. The awards aim to celebrate the apprentices and trainees who bring pride, passion, professionalism and performance to their work environments. Jesse admitted being nominated by his manager, Jason Robinson, of NetTek, felt like a greater milestone than actually receiving the award. It meant a lot to me that in such a short span of time he had felt that I was deserving of that, the 19 year old said. Seeing so many talented and hardworking individuals that were also nominated truly brought home just how big of an achievement this is. Jesse was up against 17 nominees in the Trainee of the Year category and won the award for his punctuality, pride in his work, interest in his role and initiative and responsibility at work. His work at Galen involved updating and improving repairs and help desk documentation processes. I honestly don t even think of it as work as I m usually having a blast, Jesse said. While I have spent a lot of time and effort throughout the year, involving a lot of trial and error, the work itself was rewarding. What initially began as minor adjustments in the devices used to log information and communicating with appropriate parties quickly evolved into a more complex system that completely replaced the old processes. For every module of the ticketing system that was completed, it saved considerably more time in the long term than it took to make. Jesse graduated from Galen last year and began his role as trainee in January. He will move to Melbourne to study science at Melbourne University next year after finishing up at the school next month and spending time exploring Europe with money from the award. Article by Cadet Journalist, Freyja Postlethwaite (2016 Galen Graduate) Courtesy of the Wangaratta Chronicle THE IT GUY: Galen Catholic College former student and IT support trainee, Jesse Gardner-Russell, was ecstatic to be awarded the Apprenticeship Factory s Trainee of the Year. Coming Soon! Australian National VEX Robotics Championships December 2nd Wangaratta Indoor Sport and Aquatic Centre 10am 3pm 70 teams from all over Australia! Including Primary, Secondary and University students! Teams will be vying to represent Australia at the World Champs in Louisville Kentucky in Reflections Newsletter

Australian National VEX Robotics Championships DTAC (Digital Technologies Advisory Committee) Wangaratta, have been working closely with VEX Australia and DATTA Vic (Design and Technology Teachers Association) to hold the VEX Robotics Championships here in Wangaratta. Last year Wangaratta held the National Champs with 24 teams competing in the VEX EDR (Secondary students), and 5 Teams in the VEX IQ (Primary students). We saw three local teams compete and two teams get into the finals. Due to the growth of VEX robotics in Australia this will be the biggest VEX Robotics Event ever held in Australia - right here in Wangaratta! And the first time a VEX U level will be held for University. There will about 12 local teams competing in the VEX EDR event and 5 in the VEX IQ event. The growth has been impressive not only in the region but all over Australia. The take up of VEX Robotics is due to the nature of the competitions, and the STEM Skills involved it is all about cooperation, teamwork, design, problem solving and programming. Skills that our students need for the future. In all levels of VEX competitions, students must design, build and program a robot for a specific competition game each season there is a new challenge, so a whole new Robot has to be designed in order to succeed in each season. Teamwork and collaboration is the key to success for any team. To highlight the teamwork and spirit of VEX Competitions each team is randomly drawn an alliance partner for each match. This means students have to work together with another group of students from another school to come up with a winning strategy, looking at the design element of each of their robots. If you don t collaborate and make a strategic plan there can be chaos on the field. VEX IQ Ringmaster Challenge 2017 is for Primary level students. The robots are built from lego style pieces. VEX EDR In the Zone 2017 is for Secondary aged students, these are more like mecano style robot pieces. VEX U In the Zone 2017 is the same challenge as the secondary aged students, however they are allowed to customize their robots parts, and have more flexibility in the design, yet still have certain size restrictions as per the VEX EDR. For more information, please contact: maree.timms@galen.vic.edu.au VEX Australia Australian National VEX Robotics Championships Saturday December 2 nd 10am 3pm Wangaratta Indoor Sports & Aquatic Centre HP Barr Reserve, Schilling Dr, Wangaratta VIC 3677 Come and Watch over 60 teams from all over Australia battle it out for a chance to represent Australia in the World Championships in the USA. 7 Winners of the Italian exchange scholarship 2017 All set for Italy: Olivia Annett, Georgia Scott, Liam Kendall, Carla Speziale and Siobhan McMahon. Congratulations to the Year 11 students above who received a $600 scholarship. The students will spend two months in Italy living with a host family and attending a Senior High School. They will also spend three days in Rome before they return home at the beginning of the school year. While abroad, the Year 11s will gain valuable language skills and each of them are looking forward to experiencing Italy s rich culture. In the past few weeks, students of Year 8 Italian have been working on a research project about the most famous of Italian food, PASTA! What a better way of completing their research than going to the kitchen and making authentic Italian pasta from scratch! Flour, eggs, salt and taaaa daaaa! Italian Pasta Making Students made different types of pasta, such as fettuccine (large flat noodles), farfalle (bow ties or butterflies) and cavatelli rigati (there s no English translation for these ones!). At the end, they all ate their pasta with either tomato sauce or carbonara seasoning. Buonissima! 7

Year 11 Music visit Our Lady's Primary students The Year 11 music class recently visited Our Lady s Primary School to perform a concert in their wonderful hall. The entire school enjoyed a wide range of songs including the Ray Charles hit Hit the Road Jack, Waiting for the world to change by John Mayer and Love me again a song by John Newman just to name a few. The class planned all aspects of the visit including making contact with the school, choosing and learning the songs to be performed and working out what equipment would be required and then how to set and pack it up. Principal Mark Walsh expressed how wonderful it was to see former students Jai Crispin and Carla Speziale returning to the school to perform with their class mates at such a high level. Well done to all students involved. David Ashfield Director of Music VCAL Pizza Ovens Under Construction Year 11 VCAL Work Related Skills students have been busy constructing pizza ovens and expect the project to be completed in a few weeks. Once finished they will certainly be enjoyed by the college community for many years to come. 8 Reflections Newsletter

Benalla Field & Game Clay Target shooting Will Creed achieves 1st place On Monday the 16th October 18 students from Galen Catholic College travelled to Benalla to take part in the Annual Benalla College P-12 Field & Game shoot held at the Reef Hills State Park complex. The format comprised 2 rounds of 10 targets each, at 5 different stations, for a total possible score of 20/20. Our Galen shooters acquitted themselves very well, with 14 of the 18 students shooting at least 50% or better on a challenging course. Jacob Motha shot a 17, Angus Beck & Michael Cooper shot a 16, Ryan Cole & James McIntyre shot a 15, Katelyn Van Gastelen shot a 10 and our best performed shooter on the day, Will Creed, shot an impressive 19/20. Will shot an 9/10 1st round and a perfect 10/10 2nd round. This was good enough for him to win the D Comensoli Trophy on the day. Congratulations Will, on a fantastic effort. Thanks to Amanda White for all her help organising and Will Nolan for helping out on the day and a special thank you to all our students who conducted themselves impeccably on the day. Beth Cope was our captain and served brilliantly all day, and the support and encouragement every girl gave was fabulous to see- their skills improved rapidly across the games and I know they re already looking to go one better next year- well done girls! Girls Year 7 Table Tennis On Tuesday 31st of October the year 7 girls competed in their Hume Region Table Tennis finals. The team consisting of Beth Cope, Caitlin Somerville, Yasmine Budic and Emma Hughes, were successful on the day and were able to take out first place in the Hume championships. In our first game against Wangaratta High School, we won all four singles and all doubles and ran out winning six games to nil. The next game was against Tallangatta and once again the girls showed very good skills, and ran out winners five games to one. Congratulations to all girls who played extremely well on the day and will now go on to play at the state championships in Melbourne on Wednesday November 16th. Good luck girls. A special thank you to Mr.Burt for taking the team to and from the table tennis and giving them the chance to train as well. Yasmin Budic 11

Boys Year 8, 9 & 10 Table Tennis Yr 8 Boys Table Tennis team won 5-1, 6 0, & 10 Boys Table Tennis Team won 6 0, 6 0, 6 0 On Thursday the 2nd of November, the year 8 boys table tennis team played in the Hume Region finals. They played 3 other teams on the day Notre Dame Shepparton, Seymour and Yarrawonga. The team played extremely well and came away winning the Region Final. The team consisted of Joe Allen, Fraser Holland-Dean, Rhys Rigoni, Alex McCarthy, tom Johnstone and Tom Gerrish. We won our first game, 5 games to 1 against Notre Dame. Fraser, Rhys and Alex played well and had three easy wins. Tom Gerrish s classy defence got us over the line in the double s while Tom Johnstone played a great game in the doubles. The second game was won easily by Galen and once again all the boys worked well together. In the last game, we played our arch rivals Seymour. They didn t trouble us with their tactics playing their best player number 2 but once again Fraser Holland Dean knocked him off. Alex McCarthy played a ripper and the blitzing Rhys Rigoni showed off his sneaky skills to fight out a huge 5th setter that set us up for the eventual win. The boys are now off to state on the 27th of November for the second time in a row. We are looking to go one better this year. On November the 2nd the intermediate boys played table tennis at the Hume Region stage in Wangaratta at the Showgrounds. The team consisted of Andrew Linder, Lewis Holland-Dean, Sammy Allen and Lachie Carboon. The boys played Notre Dame first and didn t drop one set with Andrew Lindner playing his usual 3 nil match. Coming off a good win we then played Yarrawonga P-12 and again didn t drop one set, this time Sam Allen had a convincing easy win show casing his talent. Finally we played Seymour Secondary College. These matches were all a battle with Lachlan Carboon coming playing a good array of shots and Lewis Holland Dean being the real stand out playing a tough 4 set match. The intermediate boys came out on top winning all 3 games 6 to 0. We will now advance to state finals in Melbourne on the 27th of November. Thanks to Laurie Burt for coaching and training us.
