1 Issue 11 Bringing you the best from the Southwest Friday, Nov Wildcat Weekly Greenhand Installation Night Okabena The Heron Lake-Okabena FFA chapter welcomed new members on Monday night. Before the ceremony began, community members and parents of the involved FFA members sat down for a nice meal of pancakes. The enjoyed the crops samples brought in by the FFA members while still in the cafeteria. At 7 o clock sharp, the FFA officers began with the opening ceremonies and President Megan Haberman gave a welcome speech. Co-Secretary Haley Ruesch welcomed, Emily Erickson (Bartosh) who attended SSC a few years ago and was a large influence on her FFA chapter. She spoke on various topics including her understanding of the creed and what it means to be a farmer. Next at the podium, was Kaylan Untiedt who awarded the fruit sales winners. Abi Fest was the third highest fruit salesman, Andrew Madsen was second, and Jeremy Thurk had the overall highest sales for our FFA chapter. As a whole HL-O FFA sold over $12,000 of fruit, cheese, and beef sticks. The crops show winners were next as Reporter Hailey Schumacher read the results. Ashley Hendrickson took control of the night winning 4 awards for her marvelous work on her shell corn, soybeans, and 10-ear corn sample. Andrew Madsen also received 2 awards for his great work. The last and final awards of the night went to the winners of the Blue Jacket Bright Future Contest which was announced by Sentinel Matthew Poppe. The contest consisted of writing an essay so that you have the chance to be chosen to win a free FFA jacket! The winners this years were Leah Schmid, Lexy Ruesch, and Andrew Madsen. The following action in the agenda was to officially induct the new Greenhands into the HL-O FFA chapter. By agreeing to a few statements given by the President and Advisor and also performing the creed, the eight Greenhands then became members. Concluding the induction of the new members, Travis Troendle, Minnesota State FFA Treasurer, gave a speech on what his FFA jacket meant to him. The officers then performed the closing ceremonies. Finishing the night, everyone was invited to have a root beer float.

2 Page 2 Friends of Lloyd Kalfs If you see Lloyd Kalfs rolling around the school, say hi and give him a warm welcome. For those that don t know, Lloyd was an outstanding basketball player at this school and in college. He had a severe car accident a few years ago and has some paralysis now. He is going to be one of the assistant girls basketball coaches. His knowledge of post play, his college basketball experience, and his general demeanor with people will make him an excellent addition to the coaching staff. There is also a group trying to raise some funds to get Lloyd an Action Trackstander Chair. This chair would allow him to travel outside through mud, snow, water, etc. It will also allow him to stand up with the push of a button which has numerous health benefits. Lloyd tried out the chair and loved it, so please help us raise some money to get this amazing chair for Lloyd. You can bring your donations in to Mikka in the school office or donate directly to Lloyd by cash or check at 114 N. Minnesota Ave, Okabena MN or through the company website ( g). Mockingjay Part 2 The final instalment in the Hunger Games will debut tonight. It is predicted to gross 120 million in the first weekend. According to HL-O Polls 51% of students will be going to see Mockingjay. How will Katniss story end? Will she be their savior?? Will she end up with Gale or Peeta? Will Haymitch ever stay sober?? These can only be answered by going to see the spectacular finale. May the odds be ever in your favor. Black Friday Do you participate in Black Friday? When major retailers began to realize that discounting prices drastically could attract big crowds, Black Friday became the day to shop. This year Black Friday discounts begin on Thanksgiving night and run all the way through the next day. People can be seen hoarding outside of retail stores for hours waiting for deals they are anxious to receive. In more recent years, consumers are choosing to shop online instead of risking the chilly weather or battling for the most popular items. While it is not an official holiday, many employees have the day off except for those who work in retail. What does Black Friday mean? The term Black Friday first originated in the 1960s to begin the Christmas shopping season. The term black literally refers to when accounting records were hand written and they moved from the red ink which was a loss and black ink which stood for a profit. The Macys Thanksgiving Day parade in 1924, became the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season and led up to Black Friday. Deer Hunting Contest The deer hunting contest ends 12/31/15 when all of the seasons are over. Send a picture of your deer to the Wildcat Twitter account. You could win a $15 gift card to Walmart if you win the contest. They will be judged by the Wildcat Weekly.

3 Page 3 Athlete of the Week I have selected Eh Mya as the spotlight student because of her performance, hard work, and positive attitude in my science classes. This year she has taken Chemistry, Field Biology, and Anatomy which is a large science load with some very difficult material. I have repeatedly been impressed with her patience and focus in my classroom. Based on her performance it is clear that she spends time outside of school studying and expanding her intellect. Not only does she actively seek help from me, she expresses a deep appreciation for the education she is receiving. I believe her determination and work ethic will take her far in the future, and for that reason I think she is more than worthy of this spotlight. Congratulations, Eh Mya!. Student of the Week HL-O Band and Small Group Choir Performance Last night, the band gave a great performance under the direction of Mr. Biles. The pieces all fit under the theme Musical Adventure. The junior high concert band began by taking the audience back to prehistoric times with A Prehistoric Suite, a piece that consisted of two selections, Stegosaurus (The Gladiator) and Brontosaurus ( The Gentle Giant). Their second piece took those present back to Wales in the 1300s with a piece entitled, The Siege of Harlech Castle. The concert bands mysterious and strong pieces were finished in eastern Africa. This final song was called Safari. Following the concert band, the boys small group choir sang Gone, gone, gone. This was preceded by the mixed small group choir, who performed Shut up and dance. For the second half of the concert, the senior high wind ensemble took the floor, leading with Theme from Jurassic Park. Next they played Air for Band, a delicate selection which they perfected with gentle accuracy. Their third piece An English Celebration, made of folk songs dating back 400 years. Trail scenes was the evenings finale, which started off with a slow portion depicting the watchful eye of those watching over the cattle in Texas. Following that portion, which was called Nighthawk, the piece transtioned into Roundup. This portion of the piece gradually became more upbeat, representing the cattle in the morning. The concert was a huge success, where all groups performed quite well. Both bands did an exceptional job of taking their audiences on an adventure through a night filled with powerful music.

4 Page 4 Teacher Tales Sharon Espeland Carter Born and raised in Canton, South Dakota, Sharon Espeland Carter had 3 brothers and 2 sisters and loved to spend holidays with relatives. She attended Canton High School and graduated from there in Her favorite high school experiences included playing clarinet in the concert and marching bands at Canton and touring with the band to places like Kansas City. She also got to travel to Europe as a youth with her family and got to visit most every country. After graduating from high school, Carter intended on pursuing the nursing program at SDSU but changed her mind when her mother died at a young age. She decided to pursue a teaching degree in math instead and graduated from SDSU in While in Brookings, she enjoyed the relationships and social activities that the college and town had to offer. Mrs. Carter s first teaching job was at Stordan/Jeffers where she spent the years from Then it was off to Sioux Valley/ Round Lake/Brewster where she taught until Finally, she took a position here at SSC where she has been ever since. Carter said she enjoys getting to know the students and building relationships with them. Mrs. Carter likes to travel with Virg, her husband, especially to the Michigan and Minnesota North Shores. She also enjoys reading and gardening. What is HL-O Polls? What is HL-O polls?? It is an anonymous account set up on Twitter. Polls ranging from who is better looking to what teams are going to win more games this year. Are we really willing to use other people for our own entertainment? Mostly the buzz surrounding HL-O polls has died down but for a few days this week, it was the talk of the town. Who is behind this mysterious account that has the school craving to vote? We may never know but the truth may come out. HL- O polls had its two minutes of fame just like Flappy Bird and Clash of Clans. The trend of high school student to rave and rant about the latest obsession of the student body. All things good must eventually come to an end. Thanksgiving The first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621, with some Indians, a few settlers, and a bunch of corn. Squanto, a Native American who was captured by the separatists, taught the newcomers how to how to catch fish, grow crops, and avoid poisonous plants. The fall of 1621 was the settler s first successful harvest so they celebrated by inviting the Indians over for the First Thanksgiving. Abraham Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving, the 4th Thursday in November, a national holiday. He said we should give, "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens." On thanksgiving we should show our appreciation to everyone we are thankful for and let them know how much they mean to us. There are many different ways people celebrate thanksgiving, and many different family traditions. Mr. Bourquin says his family tradition is eating dinner, and then watching football while his wife goes Black Friday shopping. Michal Berger says his family goes to his grandparents house and shoot clay pigeons and blow things up. Taryn Crocker says her family and her family go chill out with her grandma in South Dakota. Cassie Kramer and her lovely family sit in the living room at her house and watch Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade on tv. Tessla Crowell and her family all meet at her house and have dinner and blow things up. There are many different types of family s with all types of traditions, from blowing things up to watching tv together, but they all have one thing in common. Everyone is thankful for all their loved ones.
