Next week s GOOLE & SELBY SPORT will be published on Thursday, 13 September Robins unbeaten run ends in heavy Vase defeat Selby Town 0, Staveley MW 5 The Robins unbeaten start to the season in league and cup was ended in clinical style by Premier Division side, Staveley Miners Welfare, in Saturday s FA Challenge Vase clash, sponsored by Buildbase, at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium. Their cause was not helped, although in no way was it completely to blame, by the dismissal of striker Joe Dale for a two-footed challenge just before half time, by which time they were already second best, and it went on to get worse after the break. This was no repeat of the Whickham FA Cup tie, where Sam Cable s dismissal still saw the Robins prevail. Ahead of an FA Cup replay, which took place last night against Kendal Town, it was not the ideal result or performance by any means, and yet after their seven-game unbeaten start, it brings everyone down to earth. There was no shortage of attacking intent from manager Christian Fox, including Dale, Carl Stewart and Liam Flanagan, supported by Gary Collier. But there were changes, with a debut in goal for Michael Clancy, in place of Peter Lawrie, who was absent, and a place on the bench for new signing Zac Lawrence, as Jordan Snodin replaced Alex Robinson at left back. The attack-minded Robins Carlton Towers 1st XI 144 Beverley Town 2nd XI With two teams from within the same club not allowed in the same division, it appeared that Carlton Towers may only need a third placed finish to achieve another promotion this term - to the Premier Division in the York Senior League, after a terrific run of results. And having gone top of the table over the Bank Holiday weekend in a suddenly threepronged race for the title in Division One, they could have settled it all with a win over Aerial combat in Selby s defeat to Staveley MW. Picture by Harvey Brewster. Beverley Town seconds at the Fishpond Field on Instead their first defeat since late May, coupled with events affecting York seconds and Beverley firsts in the division above, mean that their visitors now have eligibility for promotion and are in pole position, if by a slender margin. Beverley seconds did the sort of job on Carlton that they themselves have been doing to their league opponents since losing four of their first six matches. They were asked to bat first and their unit rather crumbled against tight bowling from Beverley, who then chased down the target in the clinical way that the Fishponders have done themselves. started brightly enough without seriously testing the Staveley back-line. They were guilty of being sloppy in possession, and then even more so of conceding free kicks in dangerous positions which were not capitalised on. Clancy was forced into tipping a shot round the post as the visitors looked to open the scoring, and eventually the dangerous Jamal Riley was to do so on 18 minutes, as he pounced on a poor clearing header to run on and coolly beat the debuting Robins keeper. A brave block from Ryan Gothard, which was to eventually lead to his departure, denied Riley a second before the Only Matthew Town with a half century (52) was anywhere near his best as their consistent openers, Tom Collins and Henry Bayston, were both out for single figure scores as Connor Bowden dismissed both, and then Layton Hallam in a three-wicket burst that eventually saw figures of 5-33 in 12 overs. When Richard Gomersall departed for one they were 31-4 before captain Rob Holah (29) and Town set about a recovery of sorts to 92 before the captain was dismissed. When Torn went for 52 with nine fours in 88 balls only Mark Holmes with 22 could see them get to 144 all out in 44 overs, and it was a miserable batting effort in the circumstances, Robins tried to get back in the tie. A good run and cross by Dale and then a lobbed effort gave them hope, before Gothard blotted his copybook in a dangerous airborne lunge and the red card signalled trouble for the Robins. Sam Lingard replaced Gothard early in the second half albeit Bowden and his colleagues, in particular Chappell and Franklin (3-33) kept things tight for the visitors. In reply, Beverley had the man to anchor the innings in opener Will Parker who made 61 not out off 93 balls and although James Stephenson, on his return to first team action, steamed in with an early burst of three wickets, as the visitors were reduced to Eventually the middle order settled in with Bowden (28) completing a good all-round game and then captain Alan Acklam played a knock to match his status with an unbeaten 25 to steer them home together with Parker with plenty in hand in the end. Stephenson s 3-24 was a fine and new boy Lawrence replaced Charlie Clamp, with Snodin reverting to midfield. When Ryan Woodhead came on for Reuben Pearse, there was almost a new back for Town, still stretched, though, with 10 men, and Riley was always a threat going close on turning his marker in the area. There were isolated moments for the Robins with Flanagan going close after good work by Collier, but the tie was sealed on 66 minutes with Riley s second, stabbed home after the right-hand side of the defence was opened up once more. That knocked the stuffing out of players and supporters alike, and the visitors went on to make their passage into the next round a relatively simple task with three goals in the last quarter. Firstly, Matthew Parkin looped in a third over Clancy and then substitute Joe Pugh, a target for Goole AFC in the summer, helped himself to a late double as the unbeaten run ended with a jolt. Dale will miss three games but was available for Tuesday night s FA Cup replay, and in the grand scheme of things it may well work out to be a blessing that Town are not caught with a glut of games in their No. 1 task, which is to secure promotion. Robins line-up: Clancy; Pearse (sub. Woodhead); Snodin; Ramsey; Ann; Gothard (sub. Lawrence); Collier; Clamp (sub. Lingard); Stewart; Flanagan; Dale. Last day promotion tension for Carlton effort for Carlton, who must now win at Pocklington on Saturday, a team already relegated, and hope Beverley and Sherriff Hutton Bridge seconds, who themselves returned to winning ways after inconsistencies of late, fail to win. The gap is 12 points between themselves and Sherriff Hutton Bridge in second spot. All this late drama unfurled after Beverley Town firsts secured their promotion to Yorkshire League North after a late season burst of form confirmed a third placed finish in the Premier Division on Saturday behind York seconds, who due to their first team s involvement in the top flight are unable to be promoted themselves.

2 GOOLE & SELBY SPORT page 2 5 September 2018 Good win for Selby leaves Seasiders struggling Selby 1st XI Scarborough 2nd XI 108 Selby first team were back on the winning trail in Ebor Division Two, thanks to a good bowling performance which earned them with a 59- run win over a struggling Scarborough seconds at Escrick Park on The visitors won the toss and put Selby in to bat, and they were soon reduced to 18-2 with early wickets for David Snowball and Charlie Hopper. Skipper Alex Bowden held the Bishopthorpe 1st XI 238 Drax 1st XI 165 Any faint hopes that Drax firsts had of escaping a return to Ebor Division Four appear to have disappeared after a defeat at fourth-placed Bishopthorpe firsts in York Senior League Ebor Three on Facing a daunting 239 to win in superb conditions on the outskirts of York, Drax put up a innings together and he helped to recover the situation when he added 67 for the third wicket with Lee Wild (23). Wickets fell at regular intervals with Matt Watson (3-44) and Adam Eustace (2-18) doing the damage, and he eventually had Bowden caught for a crucial 68. Gary Moore chipped in with a useful 16 but Selby were restricted to at the close. Selby needed early wickets to get on top and James Still produced the goods in the first over when he bowled Joe Padmore with a rapid delivery. Mark Cook and Matt Watson then had brave attempt but were always behind the clock and lost wickets regularly as none of their batsmen could get over 30. The home side made a positive start on winning the toss and batting first on a good wicket, reaching 73 before Rob Ireland, who played second fiddle to fellow opener Ben Smith, was out caught by Keith Powell off the bowling of Ben Worley. Smith went on to make 80 off 78 balls with fourteen fours and a six, and the rate continued to increase although the visiting to work hard against good bowling from Still and the accurate Jamie Middleton who broke the partnership when he bowled Cook for 11. Still took 1-12 from his seven overs and Lee Wild kept up the pressure when he had Watson (21) neatly caught by Steve Sherwood. The rest of the innings revolved around Brad Milburn, but wickets tumbled at the other end with Middleton producing his best bowling of the season to take 5-53, and he eventually had Milburn (35) caught behind by Gary Moore to put Selby in control. There was some late attack did take wickets too. Paul Vickers (2-22) was the most economical off 12 overs. Ben Worley took 3-63 and Powell (3-27) but a bright 64 from Ian Holmes off just 55 balls with six fours and two sixes made sure the hosts moved past 200 and closed on 238 in the last over. Drax needed a big innings, preferably two, along the way but although Kevin Thomas (21), Charlie Adamson (25) and Jordan Lissenburg (29) all made starts they could not go resistance from Adam Eustace (19) and Matt Graves (13) but they were both removed by Wild (3-27), and Bowden took the last wicket to fall as the visitors tumbled to 108 all out in the 36th over. The victory lifts Selby up to seventh in the table and they travel to York thirds on Saturday before finishing at Goole on September 15, in the game postponed from that wet opening day to the campaign in April. Scarborough have to beat Goole at North Marine Road on Saturday to stay in the division. Brave effort, but Drax hopes fade on, and in fact extra`s with 33 were to be their top score as Clarke (3-33) and Holmes (3-17) did most of the damage, with Drax all out for 165 to the penultimate ball of the 42nd over. They are still alive with two games remaining after Eastrington s defeat, read elsewhere, but the gap is 35 points between the two and Drax have the daunting task of facing champions Dunnington seconds at home on Saturday, and their rivals travel to North Duffield. Thorpe win but now await their fate Thorpe Willoughby 1st XI Ben Johnson A season hampered by player availability, loss of form, etc. etc., in York Vale Division Two may have been saved by this win, but Thorpe Willoughby firsts face an anxious Saturday afternoon twiddling their thumbs unable to do `any more. A win in a close and exciting game against Ben Johnson at Field Lane sees them out of the relegation zone and, with Acomb thirds having withdrawn earlier this term leaves them waiting on the result of the game between the two teams below them, Bishopthorpe and Hemingbrough seconds on the outskirts of York. A win for Bish means they are safe along with them, a win for Boro and they are in likelihood going down subject to the winter happenings. Thorpe just about saved their best till last in reality, on a good track and in terrific conditions overhead, and on winning the toss captain Andy Kirk decided to play to the side s strengths in bowling first. It was a decision that looked to have back-fired with stands of 84 and 93 for the first and third Ben Johnson wickets, with opener Mike Drew the star of the show with an unbeaten 125, as he carried his bat assisted by the evergreen Martin Reynolds with 42. The Thorpe attack did stick to their task as the target looked like being more than 212, but three catches in the field backed the effort as Steve Jackson finished with 3-59 in his 12 overs, supported by Watson and Crockford. A second wicket partnership of 142 gave Thorpe the momentum they needed in a chase of over five an over, with David Squires and Martin Cooke in form. Squires did go for 83 adjudged leg before, but Cooke went on to make 72 and, in partnership with Alex Kirk, seemed to be getting them over the line. A late scare could not deny Kirk and Andy Jackson getting them to in the 38th over and precious points in their survival which is now out of their hands. Thorpe seconds hold their nerve Stamford Bridge IV 138 Thorpe Willoughby 2nd XI Rather like their near neighbours Selby thirds recently, Thorpe Willoughby seconds held their nerve in a narrow two run win at Stamford Bridge fourths on Selby won by one wicket not long ago, the pitch equally tricky to score runs on, as the visitors batted first after losing the toss and with only 10 men and four ducks together with three teenagers to come in down the order, it was left to Tony Hinch to try and scramble them to a defendable total. He made a dogged 54 deciding to bat through, after an opening stand of 42 with Wilson and Carse held his end up well near the end. Porteous 4-18 from seven overs was the star of the bowling effort. In reply, Stevens was the man in form for Stamford Bridge with 60, but an in-form of late Thorpe felt they always had a chance, and they plugged away with Sam Hinch and Carse sharing five wickets and with two run outs. The champagne moment of the late afternoon, a direct hit from mid wicket by Hinch to turn the game. Only Porteous with 22 could reach double figures, Stevens apart, but it was still a tense finish with Leonard run out in trying to scramble the bottom of the table side to a rare win. Thorpe seconds complete the season at Clifton Alliance fourths on Saturday at a venue to be confirmed. Good bowling fails to avert defeat Selby 3rd XI 99, Ovington 3rd XI 140 Selby third team returned to action in York Vale Division Three, and despite a good bowling display went down to a 41 run defeat to Ovington thirds at Sandhill Lane on The York side won the toss and decided to bat first, and they struggled to 25-4 with 13 year-old Oliver Parsonage (2-24) and the pacey Luke Berzins giving Selby a good start. Young batsman Jacob Lamb then batted impressively and with support from Billy Jones (15) they added 54 for the fifth wicket. Lamb stroked nine boundaries before Dan McLoughlin bowled him for 61, but late runs were added by James Taylor (15) and Rob Wallace (17). Berzins returned to the attack, and he efficiently removed the Malton and Old Malton 2nd XI North Duffield 72 North Duffield will regroup in Division Four Ebor in 2019 aware that a substantial improvement in their batting has to be the aim, after another collapse led to a heavy defeat for the bottom of the table side at Malton and Old Malton seconds on On a perfect late summer/early autumn afternoon, the home side were put in to bat and made a good start, albeit against steady opening bowling which on another day would have brought reward. Jamie Pickles and Craig Patrick did beat the outside edge on several occasions, the latter then switching to his more customary spin which did bring him three wickets. The first of these broke the first wicket stand of 85 and then followed a run out from Patrick s arm and completed well by wick et keeper Dave Buckley. tail to finish with the fine figures of 5-18 from his nine overs as the visitors were bowled out for 140 in the 35th over. Selby also made a bad start and they soon slipped to 28-4 despite a quick 18 from Sam Mason. Rob Wallace (3-19) did the early damage but the experienced pair of Gary Wright and Ashley Heeley slowly re-built the innings, and a fifth wicket partnership of 36 got the home side back in the game. The introduction of Tom Irwin (3-14) signalled the end for Selby when he caught and bowled Heeley for 13 and wickets tumbled again. Wright became another victim for Irwin when he was caught behind for a solid 34, and despite some late runs from Oliver Steward (13no) the home side slipped to 99 all out in in the 32nd over. Selby complete their season on Saturday when they travel to Pocklington thirds. Batting has been North Duffield s problem Whitkirk 2nd XI Cawood 1st XI 168 Cawood firsts put up a good fight before going down in East Leeds against Whitkirk seconds by 29 runs in Ebor Division Three on Keith Towndrow s 74 looked to be steering them to a win at one stage in pursuit of a score just short of 200, but the home attack in the end were too good for the late order Cawood batting. The hosts won the toss and batted first with Luke Massey (66), Jake Thompson (44) and Josh Matthews (33) propelling The Duffield bowlers then chipped away at the home batting, reduced to after that first wicket stand, before a seventh wicket partnership of 84 between Gilbank (57no) and Harland (20no) took them to with Craig Patrick s three wickets at a cost of 49. In reply, Duffield s batting woes continued as the first six batsmen fell for just 15 runs between them as they fell to 7-3 and then Only three batsmen reached double figures, Nick Hatfield with 19 and one or two nice shots from Nigel Traylor (15) batting at No. 10, and they staggered to 72 all out in the 19th over as Gilbank s 5-21 completed a fine all-round afternoon for the Malton player. With two games left, starting at home to Eastrington on Saturday, Duffield will finish bottom, but look to secure at least one win to take them into the winter, whilst Malton look a good bet to join champions Dunnington seconds in Ebor Two next April. Good fight, but Cawood go down them to a 45 over closing total of Khalid Shefta maintained his recent good form with 4-51 for the Maypole Gardens outfit. In reply Cawood did their best to keep up with the rate required but lost wickets too regularly, and it was Towndrow with that 74 that kept them in with an outside chance which was ended by a late burst of wickets, and they were all out for 157 and defeat by 29 runs. With two games remaining they are still fifth in the table and a commendable effort. Bishopthorpe, in fourth, are the visitors this

3 5 September 2018 Other results aid Goole seconds Goole Town 2nd XI 115 Woodhouse Grange 2nd XI It was predictable, and it was more results elsewhere that mattered to Goole Town seconds in a 135-run defeat to long-time Ebor Two leaders, Woodhouse Grange seconds at Westfield on Gratefully, Selby firsts were doing their close rivals a favour by beating Scarborough seconds at Escrick Park, and there is still a positive 12-point gap in Goole s favour ahead of a must win clash for both Scarborough and themselves at the iconic North Marine Road on Despite Will O Donnell s return to boost the team, blessed with youth and experience, Antony Gibbins maintained the captaincy and put the visitors in to bat in warm conditions, and the visitors showed their top of the table credentials by posting in their 45 overs which started with a good opening stand between Luke Wilson Conference cricket roundup (36) and Robert Daniel (80), and then 77 from Sam Beales maintained the assault. Nathaniel Aitchison snaffled both top scorers but took some punishment with 2-72 in 12 overs, and also took the catch to dismiss Wilson off Jakey Kennedy, who took the other two wickets for 61. Chasing an unlikely 251 to win, Goole needed the in-form captain to come off and he reached 56 off 67 balls with 10 fours when he was fourth man out on 98. They were already in trouble losing Simon Franks, Andy Rodgers and O Donnell. Louis Sugden made a bright 37, but five ducks in the last six batsmen with four of the club s promising youngsters finding the pressure too much saw them all out for 115. It could all be a matter of who is available for Saturday as they seek revenge for a home defeat to the Seasiders not too long ago. Points are important to keep the last game at home to Selby on September 15 with the issue still in their own hands in a campaign where they have done well to survive so far in a strong division. Goole Town youngsters find some form There were wins for Goole Town and Carlton Towers thirds and for Eastrington seconds on Sunday in the Conference Sunday league, and defeats for Drax thirds (at Eastrington) and Gilberdyke seconds Goole Town s youngsters have run into a bit of form in the latter stages of the campaign and squeaked home by one wicket at home to Hessle thirds, who replace them at the foot of the table. The hosts won the toss and asked Hessle to bat first and they were restricted to 122 all out with Thomas Marritt taking 4-17 and Oliver Chappell Captain Gareth Fox with 47 and wicket keeper Eddie Dixon with 33 scored most of the Hessle runs, and it was no easier for the Goole side in chasing the moderate total. James Steele and Oliver Chappell with 10 and 14 made starts of sorts, but it needed Guy Richardson with 38 not out and Thomas Franks (29 not out) to get them near and allowed to return to see them to a narrow win as the tail faltered. Carlton Towers thirds atoned in a small way for their senior side s defeat the previous day by overcoming Beverley Town fifths by just four runs at the Fishpond Field to secure the title. Marcus Atkinson was the hero as he returned to take the last three wickets as the visitors looked set for a vital 30 points themselves. He finished with 3-42 as Jake Dawson made early inroads with Matthew Hudson (47) and captain Richard Sampson (29) looked to be seeing Beverley to that win after Carlton had made with solid contributions from Ben Copeland (21), Marcus Thandl (24), Thomas Shaw (25) and top scorer Hardeep Singh (35). Carlton s super season could be crowned if the first team can recover from Saturday in next week s clash at Pocklington. Elsewhere, Lewis Thomas 83 for Drax thirds enabled them to reach 176 all out in their game at Eastrington seconds, and looked set for a century until he was run out. Eastrington chased down the total with opener Nev Reed making 48, and Richard Harrison made 30 before Craig Chafer s unbeaten 33 saw them home with six overs and one ball to spare. Finally, despite 35 from Mark Eastwood and 35 from Richard Pettican, Gilberdyke seconds 150 all out was surpassed by visitors Sutton-on-Hull with one wicket to spare in an exciting ending, as Noble kept his head for the Hull side with an unbeaten 70. Hornsea 1st XI Goole Town 1st XI Goole Town firsts were left to ruefully reflect on a season of ifs and maybes as they narrowly miss out on a return to the Premier Division of the York Senior League. They were denied the full 30 points in their penultimate game of the campaign, when Hornsea s last pair remained steadfast on the East Coast in another high-scoring game between the teams, if not the heights of the corresponding game back in high summer. The ifs are if they could have fielded a more settled side throughout, if they could have had more strength in the bowling department, without decrying the efforts of those that have bowled superbly at times and the biggest if of all had they not frozen in the home derby; against Carlton Towers which was one of the more embarrassing performances in recent seasons. The maybes : maybe if they had won at Knaresborough last Monday when getting bogged down, and maybe one or two winning draws turned into wins which would have kept them in contention for next week s final set of games. The overall feeling is that another season in Division One may help and, providing Dave England can successfully get over another operation this autumn, and be fit to play a part at some time in 2019, that will be a help more than a hindrance. On a normally excellent batting track at Hornsea, Goole won the toss and batted with Ben Shelton and Guy Richardson getting to 99 before then former fell for a fine 57. Although Ashton Nottingham and Scott Thorpe fell cheaply and Richardson departed for 39, the stage was set for Ollie Ounsley to reproduce the form at the end of the season which he showed in May, and he made a tremendous 80 sharing stands with Ed Hasdell (31) and the returning former captain, James Kerr 34. They reached an imposing 285-7, which was still some way short of the 350 plus in the corresponding game at Westfield and also bearing in mind that Hornsea that day looked like chasing it down at one stage. GOOLE & SELBY SPORT page 3 Goole firsts rue what might have been Eastrington 1st XI Heworth 2nd XI Defeat by three wickets for Eastrington in their third successive home game in Ebor Division Three leaves them still with a little work to do to ensure their survival, although they remain very strong favourites to stay up. A good game of cricket in splendid conditions at Station Road went the way of the visitors who needed cool heads in an eighth wicket stand, batting following a solid start from their openers in reply to Eastrington s in their allotted 45 overs after they were asked to bat first. Grant Walsh, who had a fine game with bat and ball, helped the hosts make a decent start themselves after the early loss of Richard Harrison with a stand of 96 for the second wicket with Craig Chafer. Walsh made 68 with eight fours and two sixes, Chafer 37 with four boundaries and two sixes as the hosts looked to be set for a big score at Wickets then fell cheaply, Chafer, James Wraith and Walsh all going smartly as Chris Klays and Oliver Batt turned the screw for Heworth. Late hitting from last man Gary Laverack (18) helped Shane Chatham, unbeaten on 32 get them to in their 45 overs which was still a competitive score but not a match-winning one as it turned out. Heworth made a fine start to the chase with Jonathan Draper (62) and Kewell Ford (42) adding 81 for the first wicket before Walsh Not on this afternoon though, as Kerr and Mann renewed their new-ball partnership of three seasons ago and reduced the hosts to 12-2 before a stand of 117 rescued them. Ashely McKinlay, as he did at Goole, batted well for 77 and the evergreen Richard Medforth (66) before Kevin Murphy accounted for the former, caught by Ounsley and Kerr then caught Medforth off Richardson. The door was open for Goole and young Ed Hasdell with a terrific burst of 4-24 almost saw them to the win. Josh Tooke took his first wicket for the top side before the Hornsea last pair survived to add nine runs as they finished on The season closes out at Westfield on Saturday against Dringhouses, 12 noon start. High-scoring game ends in defeat for Eastrington Newport chase leather in heavy defeat Newport 1st XI 146 Cottingham 1st XI dec. It was a warm and sunny start to the first day of September, and the sun cannot set quick enough for Newport firsts, languishing at the foot of Division Two Holderness in the York Senior League and left chasing leather round the Recreation Ground after losing the toss against Cottingham firsts on An unbroken second wicket stand of 252 between captain James Brown (134no) and Danny Moss (100no) helped the visitors declare after just 36 overs of their allotted 45 with under their belts. The only success for Port came from Charlie Kirk, with the help of a Danny Smith catch to dismiss Masood Balbuch for 23 with the score on 43. Kirk opened the bowling and all the attack took punishment as runs came at over eight an over enabling them to declare on the completion of Moss s ton. With Newport s achilles heel being their batting all season, the omens were not good and despite Richard Sansom s 29, Smith with 39 and captain Matthew Phillips with 47 not out, and all tried to show their intent with big hitting, the remainder of the batting failed and they were all out for 141 in the 27th over of a possible 54 they had at their disposal after the visiting declaration. Sam Wilson took 3-38 but there were wickets for all the Cottingham attack. There are two games left to see out the season for Newport, who travel to leaders Welton on Saturday who have to win to keep their promotion hopes alive having played one game more than rivals Patrington. Bridlington 1st XI Hemingbrough 1st XI 138 It is turning into a disappointing end to the season for Hemingbrough firsts and, although defeat was no real surprise at a Bridlington side who look unluckily set to miss out on promotion in Division Two Ebor, the margin of 129 runs was decisive, even if the visitors did battle until the last over. The home side, who themselves have slipped from toplevel Premier cricket to Division Two Ebor in four years, find that Woodhouse Grange seconds appear to be struck with the first of his 3-30 in 12 overs and with Wraith (4-72) albeit expensive taking wickets, the visitors lost their way slightly. An unbroken eighth wicket partnership between Klays (37no) and Joe Johnson (22no) saw the visitors home with three overs to spare. Two innings followed similar paths for much of the time before Heworth found that match-winning combination towards the end. Eastrington have a mission to complete at bottom club North Duffield this weekend. Decisive defeat for Boro at the coast barring their way to a return to Division One although the situation is not quite done and dusted just yet. Bridlington won the toss and their powerful batting line-up amassed at five and threequarters an over on decent conditions at Dukes Park and, although the Boro bowlers stuck to their task, they could only take four wickets and could not totally contain the home side. In reply, the wickets fell at regular intervals but they battled into the last over where the final wicket was claimed with just three balls remaining. Hemingbrough entertain Stamford Bridge seconds in their penultimate game on Saturday, 12noon start now with the nights drawing in.

Kelfield and Burn finishing well in league Although the York Vale Division One championship has largely been decided in Westow s favour since early August, if not before, our two local sides are finishing well in the top flight. Kelfield may still finish runners-up, depending on the final week s results this Saturday, but continued their good burst of form against Thixendale. The Wolds side were always on the back foot from losing their first wicket in the second over with no score on the board. The main resistance came from debutant Fred Smyth with 20, and although five other batsman made scores into the teens, nobody made a telling score in a total of 117 in 36 overs. The wickets were shared between Matt Walker (3-31), Sam Dunn (3-39), Dave Stephenson (2-19) and Ryan Lorryman (1-2). Kelfield, who held their catches and bowled tightly on a lively pitch, negated the effect of the pitch by putting Thixendale to the sword with aggressive batting, Openers Craig Lawson (60no) and Dendaleunn (53no) knocked off the runs in 14.4 overs for a 10- wicket win. Kelfield travel to South Cave and Brantingham, with Clifton Alliance thirds, above them in second place, at already relegated Askham Bryan. Speaking of whom, they were hit by Burn s Leigh Adamson striking his third century of the season after making 93 the previous week as Burn hammered them. Keven Smith bowled a superb opening spell for Askham and was unlucky to come away empty handed, after beating Adamson s outside edge on several occasions. It was Chris Copeland who eventually made a breakthrough with the dismissal of Ben Steward with 82 on the board. Ed Clark raced to a half century in no time at all taking the run rate beyond nine an over. Soham Nayak eventually took his wicket for 72, thanks to a smart catch from Copeland, and the same bowler gained Adamson s scalp for 101. Tom Cobley and Jacob Webster ensured the score kept moving in the final overs with a 46-run York Vale League tables (week ending Sunday September 2) partnership, to put 288 on the board in an innings that amassed an astonishing 56 extras. Local postman Dan Robinson soon delivered the wickets of both Askham Bryan openers on his way to figures of Graham Robson (5-20) demolished the middle order on his way to his first five-for of the season and the hosts could not recover. In Division two, Hirst Courtney and Yapham seconds will lock horns in the final game of the season to decide who will go up with divisional champions Stockton and Hopgrove. Luke Mitchell (4-26) tore through depleted Hemingbrough s middle order to set up Hirst s nine-wicket win. Boro crumbled to 34-5 before opener Eric Montgomery (47) and Sam Easthill (22) put on 53 for the sixth wicket. Russ Stones (3-7) removed Montgomery then quickly got the last two wickets, with Hemingbrough bowled out for 88. Hirst coasted home within 16 overs with Ben Copeland finishing unbeaten on 42. Matt Bradshaw took the only wicket to fall. Boro, as you will read elsewhere have to beat Bishopthorpe seconds on Saturday to maintain Division Two status at Thorpe Willoughby firsts expense. Yapham also had an easy win after bowling out Malton and Old Malton for just 62 and winning by nine wickets. In Division Three, Burn seconds are second after victory at Pocklington thirds. The hosts, batting freely, reached drinks at 110-3, with Gary Wilson (61) leading the way. A miserly spell from Ashley Abbott (3-25 in 11 overs) helped put the brakes on as Pocklington were reduced to Youngsters Adam Wilcock (27no) and Henry Sumner staged a recovery to get Pock to at tea. Burn s reply was rapid too, but both openers were dismissed within the first four overs, including Ray Adamson for 25. Michael Sullivan (93no) then played the perfect innings for his team, defending when it was called for and capitalising on anything loose. With good support from Bob Adamson (22) and Abbott, the score moved to 163 before the eighth wicket fell. With over 30 still required, Sullivan found the perfect ally in Nick Dowell who rotated the strike to allow Sullivan to win the game in the 38th over. Dunnington thirds have a game in hand and could pip them to runners-up spot after just getting home against Yapham thirds on Sunday fielding seven Under 15 players. 5 5 September 2018 Minster Engineering League Riccall take early bragging rights Cliffe FC 1 Riccall United 2 The early bragging rights between the two close rivals went the way of Riccall United as the new Minster Engineering League Division One season opened with a local derby at Oxen Lane on The game was ill-tempered at times and the referee struggled for control as it finished with two men sent off from each side. Former Cliffe man Luke Durham and Owen O Neill scored for the visitors, under new management in , and Andy Addison was on the scoresheet for the hosts, who were left to rue a host of missed chances to have at least earned a point. Taking the early showers were Darren Jackson and long-serving Tom Hogg for Cliffe, who was particularly annoyed at what he deemed to be a wrong call from the match referee. Former Thorpe and Selby Town winger, James Arnold for two yellow cards and Liam Houston were the Riccall culprits. Cliffe have a free Saturday before entertaining promoted Haxby United on September 15, kick off 2pm and their reserves also kick off then in Reserve Section C against Rawcliffe Reserves. The early season pacemakers in the division were in electrifying form and the MinsterMen were simply no match in an 8-1 defeat and that follows the heavy opening day defeat at Bridlington Town Reserves. The Minstermen then suffered a frustrating day out at Brandesburton on Saturday, where the league game had to be cancelled when the referee failed to arrive, and all that after a breakdown on route. They did have a friendly game for an hour but the actual league game will have to be rearranged. 6 GOOLE & SELBY SPORT page 6 5 September 2018 Vikings have that little bit extra Bridlington Town 1 Goole AFC 3 (after extra time 90 min. score 1-1) Justice was done in Tuesday night s Toolstation NCEL Cup first round tie at Queensgate, but it took the Vikings a long time to make sure it was completed against Bridlington Town. A third cup exit inside the opening month of the campaign appeared likely, despite Goole being the better side for the most part, until Ollie Smith grabbed an 87th minute equaliser and then went on to score a minute into extra time. Selby Town 1, Kendal Town 1 a.e.t. 90 min.1-1 Kendal win on penalties Joint player/manager Derry Robson, albeit with a suspicion of offside, made it 3-1 in the first period and they comfortably held on to cause quite a shock. A shock, simply, as the difference in resources was rather like chalk and cheese between the teams, but the hosts did not have the spirit of the Vikings side, who were down to the barest of bones. Billy Law and Ollie Smith could have given the Vikings the lead in the first quarter, but Jody Barford, one of a handful of former Vikings players with ex-manager Curtis Woodhouse on the East Coast, made one fine stop from the former, and a more routine save from Smith. As so often seems to be the case, Goole s impressive start was undone by the Seasiders going ahead from their first serious raid, and Chris Adams fired them in front. To be honest, that was Bridlington s one and only real chance of the game, despite plenty of firepower on show and on the bench. But they were negated by disciplined, yes you read it right, disciplined defending, which eventually, but it was very late, manifested itself forward. Goole slowly upped the ante after the hour mark, and although chances were few and far between, inspired by Robson, they looked for an equaliser and, after Ollie Smith had gone close twice, he eventually made it three in three games with a close-range finish. Manager Woodhouse had tried to add power up front with three mid-half substitutions, but if anything, they were even more lack-lustre than before and the home supoorters gradually got on the players backs, especially when Smith put the Vikings ahead a minute into the first period of extra time four in three for the striker now finding his feet after a year out of the game. Confidence suddenly oozed from the Vikings, and the tie was put to bed before the first period came to an end, with Robson seemingly beating the offside trap to go on and beat Barford with the hone defence totally bemused. Despite throwing everyone forward, Goole s defence remained water-tight and they could have added a fourth had Barford not saved from Smith near time. Full credit to Goole, who rightly, have taken flak at times for their naivety in certain areas. Whilst not perfect by any means, they have grasped the nettle now and can move on, especially if Messrs. Robson and Jeff can entice a couple of targets in Chris Ovington and Marcus Edwards back to the club. They left it late, but fully deserved to send many of the club s old boys packing from the League Cup, namely Barford, Dennison, Jenkinson, Barwick, Modest, McKenzie and Norfolk quite a group. It will add to a very thin squad and bring pace and direction if they both come off ahead of Saturday s rearranged home game with Eccleshill United, kick off 3pm, where league points are now a must to arrest a very ordinary start to the season. Somehow he managed to save his effort. Slow-starting Vikings pay the price Goole AFC 1 Barnoldswick Town 2 National cup exits have come ten-a-penny to Goole AFC in the last twenty years, and Saturday s case was another example against Hallmark North West Counties League Premier Division Barnoldwick Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Challenge Vase at the Victoria Pleasure grounds. This time they paid for a disastrously slow start in which they could so easily have been four or five goals down at the interval instead of just the one, which became two moments into the second half, which gave them a slim hope of a recovery. Even then, and in producing a more disciplined second half to a degree, they still managed to fluff their lines as, having equalised through Ollie Smith scrambling home, they then missed the chance of the season as Josh Schofield somehow shot wide from less than three yards out immediately afterwards. The spur from getting on top and getting back in the game was lost once more, although they dominated possession without the necessary quality needed to win games of football. Joint managers Derry Robson and Steve Jeff were without Rob Constable (sister s wedding), Daniel Nicholson and Jacob Stannard, but did have Marcel Chigumira back in the side and there was a debut a second time around for Jack Smith. The script in cupties in recent years is for the Vikings to make a slow start and fall behind early and there was no change there. You can say Barnoldswick were up for the task in hand and they were the better side, but Goole could barely put two passes together, they were lethargic and often out-paced. They fell behind to a training ground routine from a corner after eight minutes, with a step over and then a fine finish from Zach Dale. The Vikings were simply outfought, out-manoevred, outpaced and out everything in the first 25 minutes and it was a miracle it stayed 1-0, with Joe Wilton making two good saves and the woodwork rattled by a stinging shot from Hill. Dale could have made it two before that, as the Goole defence had no protection from an over-run midfield and it certainly looked bleak. Slowly, very slowly, and through laborious build-up play, Goole tried to get back in the game. Ollie Smith and Marcel Chigumira had half chances but all the time they were susceptible to bursts from Barnoldswick and they had a charmed existence at times. They reached the interval with no further damage, but within 30 seconds of the restart they were two goals down, as Dale beat Wilton after Coop s initial shot. It perhaps could have been stopped, but was no less than Barnoldswick deserved. With another early cup exit all but certain, suddenly the game changed, with Goole at last showing some fight, led by Schofield. From a corner not cleared, Smith managed to bundle the ball home for his second goal in as many games. Seconds later and the Barnoldswick manager was shaking his head in disbelief, as were the home supporters, but for different reasons, as Josh Schofield had the goal at his mercy from a well-worked move, but somehow shot wide. It certainly woke the visitors up and, urged on from their bench for that not to be repeated, they assumed control, if not possession, and were always strong enough in defence to snaffle any home threat. Substitutions were made but the tie slipped away from the Vikings as their play became scrappy again as they chased an equaliser, and although it was a better second half display, you are still left wondering just where a win is coming from. The concept of Goole becoming a Community club has to be applauded but somehow, somewhere that community has to be enticed. Although it is a Catch 22 situation, with limited funds to strengthen, without those funds the future looks bleak in the short term, with another relegation certainly not out of the question without a dramatic improvemernt.

Lucas, who attends Carlton Primary School, has been playing in age group tournaments all year. To qualify for the final of the Wee Wonders competition he needed to finish in the top 3 of the regional round played at the Leeds Golf Centre. Lucas, caddied by dad Phil, only went and won the heat to qualify! Before travelling to Scotland, Lucas had one more tournament to play, a round of the European Junior tour at Carden Park in Chester, where once again he led the field home with a level par score of 44 for the 9 holes played. Lucas and his family spent the bank holiday weekend in St Andrews and had a fantastic time, especially walking the famous old links and posing on the Swilken Bridge where all of golf s great champions have stood when marching down the 18th to claim the British Open. A Liam Coultish hat-trick secured the win which leaves them sitting out the final week of the campaign with a bye, but with an unassailable 15 point lead. The Cheddars turn their minds to the play-offs after braces of wins from Kevin Wright and Teresa Martin. The Fleet are second and had to come from behind to overcome Middle House Massive 8-5 after trailing 4-1 and 5-4, but Adam Penistone s hat-trick and the last four frames of the night kept them on course for a return to Division One. Lucas played tremendously well, and birdied the final hole to finish in a very creditable 7th place in a field of the best young players from all over Peacock Outlanders were comfortable 9-4 winners over Verm Vandals, assisted by a Bob Bracegirdle hat-trick, whilst double-frame wins from Aiden Whitehead and Andrew Sinclair made up the four points for the losers. Middle House Warriors kept their play-off hopes alive with a 9-4 win over Hungry Horse Stallions thanks to doubles from Kaylie Green, Nicky Hill and Roy Loombe, whilst Sam Lissiter hit a hat-trick for the Stallions, who may miss out. A treble from Steamed Uppers captain Dom Simpson saw them run out 8-5 winners at Mac Marauders. Peacock Dragons had a bye. In the Premier Division, Packet Sambas still lead by three points after a 9-4 win over Buchanan Bulldogs, who were relegated. The Sambas were not Britain. Lucas was back practising at Drax on Monday morning, looking to add to his haul of trophies for the year. Dad Phil is at their best, but they have turned around a 12 point-deficit in April into this position so late in the campaign. Double-frame wins came from Josh and Karl Buck, Ed Cunnyworth and Matty Dodson, whose double included a Lambrini clearance. Second played third and the reigning champions, Woodland Rawneks came back from the dead to earn a 7-6 win against the Vic Club Legends. John Turner and Neil Brooks hat-tricks spurred the fightback, where they won the last four frames, and rendered Dar Copperwheat and Andy Gill s double-frame wins a scant consolation. It is so tight at the top as Bowmans Outlaws also moved joint-second with a 9-4 win over Packet Inn, courtesy of a Chris Falkingham hat-trick delighted with Lucas progress and is also very thankful to everyone at Drax who has supported Lucas on his journey. Watch this space! and a sixth frame champagne clearance by Aiden White. Liam Parry and Brandon Stannard scored all the Packet Inn s points. They are now in the final relegation place. Another side not safe as yet by any means are the Creykes Crusaders, who sit one point above the drop zone after a 9-4 loss to Marsh Mellows. Howden Hustlers are just about safe after a crushing 11-2 win over already relegated Peacock Allstars. Mick Kelly, Andrew Stevens and captain Simon Everatt all hit trebles with Steve Scott securing both points for the Allstars. Woodland Pirates did their relegation cause no harm with an 8-5 win over Swingletree United inspired by a Colin Hall hat-trick, and the win may have been even more emphatic had it not been for a late rally from 7- Course welcomes rain, but maintains good gold Drax Golf Club head green keeper Mark Sneap welcomed the rain in August and the course was transformed from the baked fairways back to its attractive lush self. The golfers however continued unabated, and several familiar names added more gongs to their collection! Chief among them was the irrepressible Steve Fitt who won the Monthly medal and the Senior medal round, both with nett scores of 62, 6 under par. The handicap secretary duly sharpened his pencil and Steve has seen his handicap slashed by 6 shots this summer! Also doubling up this month was James Boyle who won the second division of the Monthly Medal and the Rabbits Major, the Barlow Cup. Darren Neary added the Division Three medal to his seasonal haul and has done enough to move up into Division Two for the the foreseeable future. The Tigers major this month was the J Scott Cup and vice captain Dan Mitchell clinched the trophy with a fine 40 points, four under par. 1 down by the visitors. In Division One, Woodland Wallins are six points away from going up as champions after a win on the road at Hungry Horse Nobles 5-8, after trailing early on. Excellent play came from captain Troy Oldridge and Gary Outhwaite, who both hit a hat-trick of frame wins on the night with a third frame champagne clearance from the latter. Second placed Peacock Nexus keep Hungry Horse Nobles guessing on their own automatic promotion hopes as they defeated play-off hopefuls, Middle House Masters 8-5. With a home game left, that two-point advantage over the Nobles is priceless. One issue decided is the fate of Crescent Cats as they were relegated after a home loss to Charter DMC 5-8, for whom a The Jubilee pairs is always a highlight of the year and 2018 was no exception. The in-form veteran Peter Rowbottom teamed up with last year s Senior captain Dave Littlefair to claim the prize for the first time with a very respectable 43 Stableford points. The midweek medals were claimed by the consistent Craig Shelton and John Thompson, with newcomer, and father of green keeper Mark, Bob Sneap winning the division 3 round. Nothing like a bit of inside knowledge Bob! Snaith veteran Graham Trotter finally put his dodgy knee problems behind him with a win in the Senior Cup August leg, which just shows that modern medical science is not just confined to the likes of Tiger Woods! As the season draws to a close, the course is in tip top condition and there are plenty of opportunities to pay and play before the summer ends. You can also sign up for our popular Autumn Open on September 22. All details can be found on Draxgolfclub.com. Danny Masterman hat-trick of frame successes keeps them in the play-off frame. Stuart Slack s hat-trick was no more than consolation for the Cats. Woodland Wanderers beat Marsh Simbas by the narrowest of margins, 7-6, as captain Antony Kenning produced a treble frame win, and yet they are relegated, whilst the Simbas are still alive thanks to a Sam Thompson hat-trick, which gives his side hope in the final round of fixtures tonight. There is the monthly captain s meeting tomorrow evening, Thursday, September 6 at the Steam Packet from 8pm and all registration forms for the new season just around the corner must be returned with full payment. There was just one change from the starting line-up that defeated Poppleton two weeks ago, with Daryl Young returning in place of the unavailable Aaron Clark. Jason Clark teamed up with Marc Hodge in Selby s first pair, Young joined Dave Stewart in Selby s second pair while Richard Dawes and Captain Colin Fone continued as the third pair. Having beaten Bishopthorpe away earlier in the season, Selby were hopeful of back to back victories but the Bishopthorpe side was much stronger than the one that faced them at the beginning of the season. Despite the strong Bishopthorpe side, Selby started well with both Clark and Hodge and Stewart and Young winning their rubbers 7-5 and 8-4 respectively, and Dawes and Fone managing a six-all draw. The Clark and Hodge victory over a very strong Bishopthorpe first pair was particularly noteworthy. The second round was not so successful, with only Clark and Hodge winning, whilst Stewart and Young were edged out 5-7 by the Bishopthorpe first pair and Dawes and Fone never got into the contest, going down 2-10.` With the tie finely placed Selby needed a solid third round but could again only manage one win, this time supplied by Stewart and Young Clark and Hodge ran out of steam and went down 5-7 to the Bishopthorpe second pair who were growing into the tie. Dawes and Fone struggled against the Bishopthorpe first pair and slipped to a 0-10 deficit. The match appeared lost but they rallied and pulled back to 1-10 leaving the match in the balance with victory or a draw, dependent upon the out come of the final game. Despite several deuce advantages, Dawes and Fone could not convert to earn a draw and eventually lost 1-11 leaving the match tied 54 games each and six points all.
