1 in the news ISSUE 55 - OCT 2016 your source for The Investment Specialists worldwide bowling information facebook.com/bowlssouthafrica SPECSAVERS FINAL WON WITH LAST BOWL HEROICS many years. The popular na onwide event this season a racted more than players who competed at club, district, then na onal level. Format is simple and if you blink the game is over. Points are awarded for the first four of the eight bowls played nearest the jack each end 4, 3, 2, 1; each match worth 100 points. The sponsors invite district winners and runnerup from the 20 districts affiliated to Bowls SA all expenses met. CHAMPS: SpecSavers area manager, Western Province, Michelle Hendricks, presented the Super 10 trophy to Rowley Maggo, le and Doug Wya (Durbanville BC, WP) at WPCC Bowls Club It is said a good big un always beats a good l i l e u n. I n t h e fi n a l o f t h e SpecSavers/Bowls South Africa Super 10 Pairs, the smallest man on the green played like a machine and snatched victory for his duo from the jaws of defeat. WP Singles champion and All Cape winning skip Rowland (Rowley) Maggo, plus-minus 80 years old, playing with sterling lead Doug Wya, stood on the mat with the last bowl on the last end needing to draw close for victory. To the roar of a par san home crowd he did it, then ran down the green much faster than many half his age - to hug his partner. The Durbanville Bowls Club duo drama cally won the match a er having lost the lead on the sixth end to trail 33-27, to make it a hat-trick of victories of the two-bowls event to WP in as The runners-up, Verdon Boucher (father of former Protea wicketkeeper Mark) and Johnny Grant (Border) had taken that lead thanks to a 9-1 tally on the 6th end. On the fateful last end, they needed just two points to ensure an extra end play-off; three for certain victory It looked all over, the Border boys had not scored fewer than four on the first nine ends and the locals feared the worst. It was not to be. Some mes the bowls gods play funny games and alas, for Boucher, a er Wya drew shot and Grant earned him second shot and safety the Border skip fell short with both deliveries. Maggo drew second shot and with the final delivery laid it stone dead for a 9-1 end, an amazing victory and the R first prize.

2 Said Rob Forbes (EP), Bowls SA vice-president, accompanied by execu ve member Charles Levy (Port Natal): What a weekend of bowls. SpecSavers has done us all proud and everything else contributed royally to ensure an event to savour. This format, now used in Australia, shortens the game, provided great excitement for players and spectators and a racts younger bowlers to the game. The event was hosted at the WPCC Bowls Club, Rondebosch, where superb weather and magnificent greens (thanks to Dannie Loubser and Peter Bryant) won acclaim from all finalists. Catering by Trish Young and the results service from Joel Robert were excellent and organising commi ee convenor Jenny Elliot s admin was smooth and efficient, while indefa gable Helen Edwards and her technical team didn t miss a beat. COMPETITION CLOSING DATE EXTENDED - 31 OCT 2017 Specsavers is running a compe on on their website where you can stand a chance of winning eye care to the value of R Simply go onto the following site and submit your details to enter the compe on. 3 Tradi onally, South Africa s men and women Proteas dominate the annual African States Tournament. This year nothing changed, but Namibia and the hosts gave no ce of serious talent, as did Kenya, when the event was held in Harare, Zimbabwe from September shortened because of byes. This year South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Botswana competed and ended in this order. The Proteas, won three individual Gold medals, four Silver and a Bronze, plus both genders took overall Gold - men: Fours Silver; Trips - Silver; Pairs - Gold; Singles Gold, Overall Gold; Women: Fours - Bronze; Trips - Gold; Pairs - Silver; Singles Silver, Overall Gold. PROTEAS DOMINATE AGAIN, BUT AFRICAN TALENT SURFACES IN ZIMBABWE AT AST Unfortunate, but disappoin ng withdrawals by Zambia and Malawi was a damper. The event will be played in South Africa next year and then TRACY MEYERIDRICKS every second year. Money, leave, drought, security concern and personnel demands have put much pressure on the smaller na ons and some bowls organisa ons are unfortunately finding the effort too much to put their teams and the wherewithal together. Says manager and South African selector, Herzog Meiring, The standard of bowls in sub- Saharan Africa has definitely improved. I was pleased to see Kenya played well. There's clearly talent there. GOLDEN BOYS: from le, Brendon Ainley, Morgan Muvhango, Prince Neluonde, Stephan de Jager, Rudi Jacobs, manager, Herzog Meiring Meiring waxed lyrical about his charges, some of who were on debut; others, seasoned interna onals, rose to the occasion. Morgan Muvhango (an SA fours and singles champion) and Prince Neluonde (2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Johannesburg singles champion), the first all- African interna onal combina on for South Africa, won a scin lla ng undefeated gold medal in the pairs. The South Africans le only the day before the event for Harare, but found me for a short prac ce at HQ, the City Garden BC, a pleasant three-green club. The greens, although not always true, proved, however, some of the be er greens found on the con nent outside the Republic and, said Meiring, ran between a sa sfactory 14 and 15 seconds. GOLDEN GIRLS: Bronwyn Webber, Elma Davis, Susan Nel, Anneke Snyman, Esmé Kruger COLOURFUL SCENE: Compe tors together before play in Harare at the African States Tournament Weather was as expected in the sub-tropics - excellent hot Africa by day - cool in mornings, but a er 9AM rising to around DegC. The players were grateful for the competent organisa on from club and Bowls Zimbabwe; food was enjoyed and bo led water supplied free by the venue. I think with some sound coaching and overall help from Bowls SA standards will improve, said Meiring. Also travelling to Harare was Bowls South Africa president Kallie Haupt. He was more than TRIUMPHANT DUOS: Bronwyn Webber/Esmé Kruger & Prince Neluonde?Morgan Muvhango

Several Protea and district players have indicated willingness to assist. The project will replace zone camps. The s c h eme is a Bowls South Africa interven on. Talent developers (TDs) will work closely with district selectors and coaches commi ees. Liaison between na onal and district selectors will ensure those with poten al for higher honours are involved on a regular basis. Local coaches commi ees will assist with prac cal applica on of the exercises. TDs will submit a one-off set of results of various exercises bi-monthly to zone coordinators for transmission to the na onal selectors and SA head coach. Vacancies for skills developers s ll exist and ideally both genders should be involved. Districts must assist in iden fying suitable players. Once all districts are commi ed, Fraser will visit each zone to introduce the high performance programme and involve convenors of district selec on commi ees on the way forward. 7 PROGRESS ABOUNDS ACROSS BOARD Hello everyone, I had a busy, but rewarding me in Zimbabwe at the African States Tournament. Glad to say our players were in good form. Although RSA won overall gold in both men s and women s sec ons, heavy losses were recorded in the fours for both sides againt Namibia. There was a marked improvement in the standard of play from Kenya and Zimbabwe. So glad the SpecSavers finals in Cape Town was again a winner and closely contested. What a great sponsorship so many clubs and individuals benefi ng. A big thank you. I trust bowlers will remember SpecSavers when requiring spectacles or contact lenses. Well done to al at WPCC for a top class show. Congratula ons to Word Bowls John Bell who has been re-elected as president and to SA's John McArdle, back in the fold as Regional Director of Africa and the Americas. Included in this newsle er are details of innova ons introduced the na onals. The na onal singles will cater for 256 players in the o p e n e v e n t a n d i n t h e s e n i o r championship; districts are being consulted to change the format of the na onal pairs to a three-bowl event. Also, the cut-off age for both Junior Masters and Under-25 Inter district tournament has been increased from 25 to 30 years, giving more scope to more players. Enjoy the season, play fairly, but hard. Please like our Facebook page where all the news of the Proteas and their trip to New Zealand for World Bowls will appear. Kallie Haupt - President, Bowls South Africa FROM THE PRESIDENT S DESK The president of Bowls South Africa, Kallie Haupt, was forthright in his address to council mee ng at the associa on's annual mee ng at Edenvale. Here is an extract from that speech: Council Members, vice-president Rob Forbes, members of the execu ve, Bowls SA staff, the media and visitors. Allow me to share some views for shaping the road ahead I wish at this juncture to pay tribute to the execu ve commi ee and Bowls SA head office staff for support and posi ve contribu on to keeping the flag flying during a difficult year. Again on execu ve is Andy Strong of Edenvale and I welcome him back. I pay tribute to Fred Kruis for outstanding contribu ons in handling the por olios of technical officials and disability. Fred has resigned because of ill health; his friendly and analy c approach to problems will be missed. We wish him a speedy recovery What is the main ingredient for success? What we require is unity; yes, unity! A sense of belonging: Togetherness: Being a proud member of an associa on which has stood the test of me for 112 years. Cohesion: At club, district and na onal levels - samehorigheid op alle vlakke. Unity is the most fundamental and important factor for success in any organisa on. We cannot enjoy common goals without unity. HAUPT SEES UNITY AS CATALYST FOR BOWLS SUCCESS An ins tu on cannot achieve its purpose if there is disunity, distrust or division among members.unity leads to prosperity and helps strengthen rela ons, enabling us to dive forward. S o o s n o o i t t e v o r e h e t o n s n s t e r k eenheidsfront nodig waar elke rolbal speler ongeag wa er posisie hy of sy beklee brue moet bou en saamwerk vir die voortbestaan van rolbal. We must focus on the important road ahead; we have li le me to work on the future. If we want to ensure bowls remains a lively and ac ve sport in SA for the next 30 years, we need to support and work together on iden fied opportuni es. Key elements iden fied yesterday's workshop were: Increasing of membership Business leagues Transforma on; the challenge to put together a new cons tu on to reflect player needs, while being acceptable to government Present management concepts and techniques are generally directed towards solving problems; management and techniques won t save us. They ll help, but are only part of a solu on. Our a tude and culture towards change are the key ingredients for success; acceptance of change involves two aspects: 1. Unlearning old habits, a tude, believes, percep ons; a painful process at best. 2. Learning the new: Living through a long series of situa ons in which new behaviour is entrenched and made highly sa sfactory and rewarding. We cannot let fear of failure or fear of comparison or fear of judgement stop us from doing things to ensure the long term survival of bowls. We cannot succeed without risk of failure; one cannot have a voice without risk of cri cism. We must take these risks. It is to us to take bold steps; if not us, who else? Together we will ensure bowls is carried triumphantly forward to World Bowls in New Zealand at the end of this year and on to the future. The good news is that World Bowls has submi ed a document to the Interna onal Olympic Commi ee for our sport to be recognised as an Olympic event. This consist of a 40-page ques onnaire and 120 suppor ng documents for considera on at the IOC mee ng in December. I wish you well and every success in your District Thank you.

8 JOHN BELL BACK AT THE HELM OF WORLD BOWLS World Bowls president John Bell has been returned unopposed to the posi on as the sport's number one member. A former England interna onal and world champion, Bell also has a dis nguished record off the green over many years as an official and administrator. In accep ng his second two-year s nt in the sport's top job, Bell observed that the lack of other nomina ons was surely an endorsement of what he and his board have been doing. He said: I am honoured and delighted to have been returned for a second term as president of World Bowls. When I took office in 2014, my priority was to restore stability and a strong sense of purpose to our sport's global governing body. The new board, our chief execu ve and our assistant to the chief execu ve responded with enthusiasm. Together we achieved a high degree of solidarity that has enabled us to formulate and implement a programme of ac on to advance the well-being of our great sport worldwide. I am proud to list a number of successful ini a ves that have been undertaken during my inaugural two years of office: The establishment of a detailed monitoring and forecas ng system for World Bowls finances; The introduc on of a development strategy focusing on the provision of assistance for our smaller bowling na ons - including the staging of a ground-breaking European Development Seminar; The crea on of a website to serve as a global reference point for our sport; The appointment of a commercial director to facilitate the genera on of external revenue; The appointment of a professional communica ons manager to promote the work of world bowls in par cular, and the profile of our sport in general; A review of our performance standards for synthe c bowling surfaces; And the submission of an applica on to the Interna onal Olympic Commi ee with the view of our sport achieving Olympic recogni on. Of course, we should never overlook the successful running of our annual programme of world events. I hope that the posi ve a tude and ac ons witnessed over the last two years have demonstrated that World Bowls is determined to fulfil its role as a progressive and effec ve governing body. I thank my fellow directors and the officers of World Bowls for their stalwart efforts. Similarly, I thank the bowling na ons and key stakeholders across the world for their support. Con nued progress can only be maintained with the support of the exper se and experience that exists within our fraternity. There is much more work to be done, but at World Bowls we relish the challenge. I look forward to presiding over another two years of determined effort and we will leave no stone unturned to be the effec ve and progressive governing body the global bowls community can both relate to and respect. David Allen, PRO, World Bowls
