Wayne Webb Caps 2010 PBA Senior Tour Season with Win in Senior Jackson Open and Senior Player of the Year JACKSON, Mich. (Aug. 24, 2010) Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Wayne Webb capped the Senior Tour season with a win in the Senior Jackson Open Tuesday and he clinched Senior Player of the Year honors in the process. He joins fellow Hall of Famer Mark Roth as the only bowlers to win both the PBA Tour and Senior Tour Player of the Year awards. Webb, the 1980 PBA Tour Player of the Year, defeated Ray Johnson of Battle Creek, Mich., , in the championship match for his third Senior Tour title of the season and fifth of his career. He also won the USBC Senior Masters and Senior Columbus Open earlier this year. Nursing a knee injury suffered in the PBA Senior U.S. Open in June, Webb qualified 40th after the first round in WATERFORD, Mich. Almost 6 years ago to the day, Rolla Zuck shot a 199 game on his 99th birthday during his league bowling match at Century Bowl in Waterford, Michigan. Like all good athletes, Rolla believes that practice, practice, practice makes you better. Only 1 month shy of his 105th birthday, Rolla rolled a 224 game during the League Season Kickoff Tournament at his favorite bowling center, Century Bowl. The tournament included all league bowlers getting ready to start the new season. Rolla had one of the best scores and everyone celebrated. Many of the younger, high average bowlers were inspired by the great score and are ready to bowl another 80 years. Rolla is an amazing person as well as bowler, said Century Bowl Manager Sheila Kiefer. Between turns, Rolla is joking and having fun with his fellow Monday Century Kegglers league members. However, he becomes focused Oil Pattern Used Boardwalk by Kegel 104 Year-Old Bowler Rolls A 224 Game to Kickoff The New Season Lifelong Sport Keeps Centenarian s Competitive Edge With Younger Teammates when it is time to bowl. Last year, he even carried a 152 per game season average. Rolla has been bowling for many years on the Monday afternoon Century Kegglers league at Century and has enjoyed every minute. According to Century Bowl Director of Operations and Guest Happiness, Roger Philipi, Bowling is the greatest lifelong activity and the key to longevity. Many people in the new 50+ generation want to remain active. Bowling provides an exciting social and recreational atmosphere. For some people, bowling keeps the competitive edge alive. Wayne Webb Jackson and had to fight back to qualify 25th to make the cut for match play after the second round. He then won six matches Tuesday on his way to the victory. I thought about withdrawing after the second round but because Player of the Year was on the line I felt I should keep going, said Webb, who also owns 20 PBA Tour titles. The whole tournament was a roller coaster ride. Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. had a shot at Senior Player of the Year with a win and a fourth- place finish or worse by Webb. Williams, who won a record seventh PBA Player of the Year title at the conclusion of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season in April, was trying to become the first player to win both the Senior Tour and PBA Tour Player of the Year in the same season, but was eliminated in the best-of-five-game Round of 16 by Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis., 3-2. Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, who also had a shot at Senior Player of the Year going into the final event with a victory, also lost in the Round of 16. It didn t look like it was going to happen, said the 53-year-old Webb, The way he (Walter Ray) was bowling, I don t know if I could have beat him. With my knee, I felt lucky to still be in the tournament. After awhile I was just running on adrenaline. Roth won PBA Player of the Year crowns in 1977, 78, 79 and 84 and Senior Player of the Year in Mark was my idol growing up and I m honored to be in his company, said Webb, who is a bowling proprietor in Columbus, Ohio. Winning Player of the Year 30 years apart is pretty cool it s something they can t take away from you. In the semifinals, Webb defeated Patrick King of Yankton, S.D., , and Johnson defeated Dale Csuhta of Wadsworth, Ohio, , to advance to the championship match. Webb earned 8,000 for the win and Johnson 4,500 for second. PBA SENIOR JACKSON OPEN Airport Lanes, Jackson, Aug. 24 Championship Match Wayne Webb, Columbus, Ohio (8,000) def. The three Super Seniors added to the board this week were Paul Passarino (+ 36), Ely Cruz (+34) and for the women it was Roberta Nakunz (+35). It was nice to see Roberta and Mike this week, their 1st tournament after the passing of Marty back on July 4th. This week we would see 61 bowlers take the floor in the semifinals. During our Qualifying squads, the top qualifier for the Men was Freddie Catamisan with a +121, and for the women it was Deborah Sanders (one of our fine Directors) with a Each will get paid entries into a future regular ABTA event. Freddie, being the top seed would draw the Match Series worth 1428 this week and he drew a 484 that was bowled by Bennet Lai, he would take home the 1428 dollars, which is almost 3 for each pin knocked down during his qualifying squad, all for 2 dollar entry. So at our Labor Day event we will estimate the pot to be at 900 for that 3 game series. For the qualifying this week, the ones that made it saw the last 2 people fail to get 9 or strike in the roll-off, so they will split the 50 consolation; they were Danny Guevarra and William Garrett. Behind Minh was Jiradej BK Boat Harnpatanakitpanich with a + 100, he would sit out the first round of match play. It took a + 15 for the women and a + 60 for the men. There were actually 4 men that tied at a + 60 and they would have to have a 9th and 10th frame rolloff to determine which one of them would advance into the match play. In this roll-off, we would see Gino Mansilungan advance with Gerald Sanchez, Jun Contreras and Kenny Kwan tying for 17th through 19th spots. This week, our top seed Minh Dang had the honor of drawing the match game worth Minh drew 172, and it was matched by 4 fine individuals. In the second round, the losers were Youna Yun, Eugene Haynes, Don Quitangon, Noel Sicat and each would get checks of 110. In round 3 we saw Donovan Chung bowling Kmel Cunanan on lanes 15 and 16. Ruben would finish in 3rd place for 225. This week the horses paid 88 for all of you that bet on Donovan making all the way to the title match. The title game is set and would be bowled on lanes 11 and 12 this week. Minh being the top seed elected to start the match. In this match, both bowlers would lead off the 1st and 2nd frames with spares. In the 3rd frame Donovan would get a 3 count on the first ball but still picked up the spare. This was following an open by Minh in his half of the 3rd, so after the 4th frame both bowlers would be on marks and all tied. But we would see Minh get a turkey in the 5th thru 7th frames to jump out to a 10 pin lead. In Minh s 9th frame he would open to open up the door for Donovan. Donovan would come up in his half of the 9th frame and chop the 6th pin off the 6-10 and Minh kept his 10 pin lead. Donovan would get a strike and spare in his 10th frame to finish out with a 182/224. Minh, needing a mark on the 10th frame, used all his power and weight to throw two strikes finishing with a 200/241 for his 4th ABTA title. Minh would take home 1,100 for first place, an additional 1275 in the cash and carry. He was not wearing an ABTA shirt nor did he use a 900 Global ball, so his total would be 2,375 dollars this week. Donovan would take home a nice 550 check for his 2nd place finish. Champion Minh Dang is from Garden Grove and used a Natural (storm) drilled by Ben Mach at Westminster Lanes. He is single and a barber, word has it that there will be discounted haircuts this week. He wants to say thank you to Jonathan Barraca and his wife, Ben for taking care of his equipment and to the Sanchez Family and friends (too many to mention). Donovan Chung is from Los Angeles and used a Storm 2nd Dimension drilled by Ed Williamson at Bowling Square. He is single, girlfriend Steph, and would like to say thank you to the ABTA and Staff, Mao-Liu League and all his friends for their support. Taylor was the only one nominated and won as no one else wanted to do the tough job of keeping the bowlers averages updated each session. Earlier in the meeting, President Ed Abakumoff and Vice-President Sharon Caldwell were reelected to their respective positions for another term. Abakumoff will continue for his 18th year and Caldwell for her 6th. Only 16 bowlers were present at this meeting and it was voted to have 6 teams of trios for the coming season starting on Sunday September 12 at Keystone lanes. Keystone is one of 8 bowling centers voted by the bowlers along with popular centers as Del Rio Lanes, AMF Cerritos and Linbrook. Former centers as Action Bowl, Bowling Square, Covina, and Jewel City Bowl are the returnees pending acceptance by each center s manager. After Taylor contacts each center, he will arrange the league s bowling schedule, which will have the usual 16 sessions of bowling plus a sweepstakes date. The bowling time remains at 1:00pm and the league is still scratch for another year. Because of the bad economy all same league rules were passed without any increase in fees. The league may expand to 8 teams of trios only if 6 old members or new interested bowlers want to join. These 6 interested bowlers have to contact Ed, Sharon, or Bob before Labor Day to be counted in. DEADLINE FOR DEAF SENIORS OF AMERICA LAS VEGAS TOURNEY IS SEPT. 10 The deadline for entries in the 14th annual Deaf Seniors Bowlers of America is creeping close to Friday Sept. 10. The tournament as usual is at The Orleans Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center in Las Vegas with bowling for all entrants on Tuesday morning October 12 and also on Wednesday October 13 and Thursday October 14 for those who want to stay to bowl for the Match Play Eliminations. The Orleans is offering 40 per night from Sunday to Thursday to DSBA bowlers and fans reserving rooms by deadline Friday Sept. 10 using the DSBA s code. Deaf Seniors bowlers aged 55 years and older are encouraged to find their own doubles partner because asking for a pick up is at a risk. Each bowler pays entry fee by deadline of Sept. 10 and if he or she wants to bowl in match play and include all-events that is extra to add by deadline of Sept 10. Bob and Ed had been childhood friends and Ed later came back into the scene in the 1990 s, which turned out to be a good time for Carolyn. Ed had showed Bob a lot about the pro shop and it was a natural that he helped her out and - they eventually married. She says she bowls, for the fun of it, and is bowling the best she has ever bowled. In fact in the two 33 week leagues and one at 30 week league she rolled s the highest being 698; s, 20 games over 250 and two 300 s in the Funtimers league. She hasn t broken the 800 barrier yet, but close with 798. She says, I m enjoying it while I can! So, what made the difference after coming FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 3rd 9:00 PM back to bowling? She believes you are what you eat and feel and her MO has always been the same, work on her game, strive to get better and be consistent. When she takes to the lanes I am sure the pins say, Oh, Oh, here comes Carolyn. It appears this is what allows this soon to be 73- year old stroker to continue to Carolyn Scherzberg adjust to most any lane condition and belly the ball or throw it straight if necessary. Talk about being consistent, she has missed ONE day of bowling in five years and she bowls all year around! She loves the game and she loves the people. For Carolyn Scherzberg, bowling has definitely been better the second time around. Back To Fall Ball Sale All The Major Brands Chect It Out!!
