Macpherson defeated Mika Sato, Japan, , for the women s title of the 34th ABS Japan Open, becoming the second woman to roll a televised perfect game in Japanese Professional Bowlers Association (JPBA) history. The effort earned her a 10,000,000 Yen (US $121,000) bonus and the 3,000,000 Yen (US $36,000) first place prize. The win is Macpherson s third JPBA title this year and eighth overall. The three-woman stepladder started with second seed Sato defeating third seed Himeji Urara, the 2009 JPBA Player of the Year, , to advance to the title match. Macpherson closely edged Bill O Neill, Southampton, Pa., the top seed for January s PBA World Championship. Others receiving votes were Scott Norton, winner of the PBA Chameleon Championship, Eugene McCune, winner of the Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship and Osku Palermaa, winner of the PBA Geico Shark Championship. Wendy Macpherson and Dave Wodka Capture PCB Mission Hills Mixed Doubles Mission Hills After a Sunday Finals which saw 6 different teams have the lead at some point, Wendy Macpherson and Dave Wodka prevailed as the winners over Caycee Landers and Michael Haugen Jr. by a slim 13 pins. The event began with a field of 42 teams who all bowled 9 games of qualifying on Saturday. With the tougher than normal lane conditions, the cut score for the top 12 teams was Shelly Dowdle and Ken Maxey Jr. with a score of The field was lead by Missy (Belinder) Parkin and Scott Norton with a score of The 12 finalist teams returned on Sunday for 12 games of round robin match play. There were plenty of good scores on Sunday as 6 teams were in the hunt most of the day. Going into the last game, Wendy and Dave had a 47 pin lead over Caycee and Mike. Although Caycee and ARLINGTON, TX, December 1, The Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA), the bowling industry s premier trade organization, announced today the signing of a landmark agreement with PepsiCo that will make Gatorade G2 both an official sponsor of the 2011 Bowling s U.S. Women s Open and the Official Thirst Quencher of the Bowling s U.S. Women s Open. Gatorade is an iconic brand that for 45 years has been synonymous with excellence in athletics, nutrition and sports science innovation. We could not be more proud to align women s bowling with G2, a low calorie sports drink product that directly answers the needs of our athletes, said Steve Johnson, executive director of the BPAA. G2 is an ideal partner for Bowling s U.S. Women s Open. The news comes on the heels of a series of historic announcements surrounding the Open and women s bowling. This past July, the BPAA announced that the Open will be telecast on ESPN from Oil Pattern Used House Shot Mike won the game, it was only by a score of which was not enough to overtake the lead. Wendy and Dave received $2,000 for the victory while Caycee and Mike got $1,500 for second. Rounding out the top 6 were Keli Callahan and Josh Blanchard in 3rd for $1,300, past champions Brett Wolfe and Tina Stickney in 4th for $1,100, past champions Missy Parkin and Scott Norton in 5th for $1,000 and Nicole Ellison and Dennis Horan Jr. in 6th for $900. Gatorade G2 Named the Official Thirst Quencher of Bowling s U.S. Women s Open midfield at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, marking the first time in the history of the sport that a women s major professional bowling event will be held at a traditional sporting venue. Added Johnson, This historic partnership further illustrates how women s bowling has arrived. More and more major brands are taking notice of bowling s surging popularity among young females across the country. G2 offers All of the G with half the calories as Gatorade (20 calories per 8 oz. serving for G2 compared to 50 calories for Gatorade), delivering hydration to athletes during competition and exercise. As part of the sponsorship agreement, G2 will receive prominent branding at the 2011 Bowling s U.S. Women s Open including on-site visibility during match play rounds and qualifiers leading up to the June 30 finals at Cowboys Stadium (branded player jerseys, on-air brand consumption, etc.). Additionally, G2 sampling/promotion will be executed during Women s Open qualifying tournaments and state events held at bowling centers throughout the country. G2 will also receive logo recognition on all traditional media, digital media and event materials; including web sites, trade publications and in-center branding. At high schools, colleges and bowling centers across the nation, women s bowling is on the rise and rapidly growing in popularity having grown close to 13 percent over the last 3-years to over 25 million annually, said Doug Allison of PepsiCo. In bringing together G2 and Bowling s U.S. Women s Open, this partnership presents a tremendous opportunity for both brands to elevate their positions with elite female athletes. We re proud to help further the growth of America s largest participatory sport as the tremendous competitors of women s bowling will now fuel their bodies with G2. Earlier this month, the BPAA reported continuing annual increases in consumer participation with 71.1 million having bowled between April 2009 through March 2010 (the fourth consecutive year of industry growth) due, in large part, to heightened interest from women and younger bowlers. The BPAA also reported that, during that same time period, bowling generated a $10 billion impact on the U.S. economy. About Bowling s U.S. Women s Open Bringing together the most powerful brand in sports and the nation s number one participatory sport, Bowling s U.S. Women s Open, sponsored by the Brands of Ebonite International, is the premier U.S. Women s major professional bowling event. With competition open to all female youth and adult bowlers, the 2011 Bowling s U.S. Women s Open will culminate in a finals event on June 30, 2011 from midfield at Cowboys Stadium during International Bowl Expo 2011 and airing on ESPN. 2 Page 2 BOWLING NEWS Creation of of YES YES Fund Triggers triggers major Major philosophy Philosophy change Change for youth For bowling Youth Bowling By Mark Miller For the Bowling News Network The kids are our future. Youth are the most important thing we do. We must do something to replace a lost generation. Those are some of the statements made over the past 30 years since organized bowling numbers have declined. They have been followed by a number of well-intentioned and by some measures successful programs including: The Young American Bowling Alliance s BIF (Bowling Is Fun) mascot Super Bowling Saturday featuring Olympic gold medal winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton Creation of the SMART (Scholarship Management and Recording for Tenpins) program and promotion of its $6 million in annual college funds Bowlopolis Increased emphasis on high school and college bowling The United States Bowling Congress Registered Volunteer Program USBC s $5 short-season league membership and shirts for all youth members Originally, these ideas were designed to create reasons for young people to get involved in bowling beyond just a fun night out with family or friends. More recently, the goal was to turn kids first exposed to bowling at birthday parties into something more. While there have been impressive increases in high school and collegiate team competitors and today more than 20 million people under age 18 bowl at least once a year, these programs have not stemmed the drop in regular youth league numbers. From a peak of 853,650 certified American Junior Bowling Congress members in 1978, there were only 235,361 USBC youth members as of July 31, the lowest in 50 years. Only in 2001 did youth membership grow. So what s the bowling industry doing today about this continuing downward trend? Working together more than ever thanks to a partnership between the membership organizations and major manufacturers. The result was the creation of a new industry marketing and program called the Youth Education Services Fund. The YES Fund started in August when Brunswick, Columbia 300, Ebonite, 900 Global, Hammer, QubicaAMF, Roto Grip, Storm and Track agreed to contribute a combined $250,000. Bowling Proprietors Association Director of Youth Chad Murphy is leading a team of International Bowling Campus staff to test and eventually implement programs designed to transition more youth into organized bowling. Joining BPAA in its full support is the USBC. On December 2, the 65- year-old author of the 1980 s breakthrough book Perceptive Bowling, and the Bowling: Steps to Success series, rolled a in the Thursday Night Scratch League at Evergreen Lanes in Everett, Washington. It was only the second 300 in this 20-lane center this season. What makes the perfect game even more impressive is the fact that before this season, back injuries and other medical problems kept Strickland off the hardwood for 12 years. Adding to the drama, this was Strickland s first ever 300 game rolled in USBC certified competition. He had rolled several in unsanctioned play and coaching exhibitions over the years, but never in official league or tournament play. A top bowler averaging over 200 since the early 1960 s, Strickland is a member of the Dallas Bowling Hall of Fame for superior performance. He and his wife Sue moved from Dallas to Everett in 2002 to operate Robert H. Strickland Associates, a business consulting firm. The Stricklands traveled across the globe in the late 80 s and early 90 s conducting Perceptive Bowling Clinics in more than a dozen countries. Bob has also contributed columns and instructional pieces to Stars & Strikes, International Bowlers Journal, and many other publications. Over the years, he has continued coaching and occasional writing; and when he decided to get back into bowling himself, Storm Bowling Products made 2Fast and Prodigy balls available. He used the Storm 2Fast for the 300 game. I was focused on our team effort, and all of the sudden, I had a nine-bagger, said Strickland. His first ball in the 10th was a little shaky, but he buried the final two shots in the pocket for the perfecto. Evergreen Lanes honored him by putting his name over the masking units the next day. After laying off for 12 years, this was an unexpected breakthrough for me. If it keeps going well, maybe I ll get back into some PBA regional competition, he said. Strickland was a top bowler in the PBA Southwest Region for many years before moving to the Northwest. Strickland will continue to sing the praises of Strom bowling balls and bowling fundamentals as he coaches and writes about bowling. He is planning an update to his Perceptive Bowling book, and he has released a series of mental bowling tips on a website he developed with Dr. Will Powers called Bowling Tough. It can be accessed at for more info contact: Bob Strickland bob@robertstrickland.com

We assume she will have them again next week, and maybe some others will bring some Christmas items to sell. We regret we can t recall the name of the man who was also selling lots of pretty things during league play, but we have known him forever and his products continue to get better every year. It hardly seems possible but the annual Christmas pot-luck and optional gift exchange is due a week from Monday and Charlie (Santa Claus) Williams will again preside over the gift exchange. 5 BOWLING NEWS Page 5 American Bowlers Tournament Association P.O. Box 3721, Santa Fe Springs, CA Cell: Romy Cajucom 4th ABTA Win at Mission Hills Carry-Over of all Pots Match Game is $3500 Match Series estimate of $1500 ABTA Returns to Bowling Square Lanes This Weekend is $2,400 at Bowling Square Lanes MISSION HILLS In our long awaited return to Mission Hills Bowl, bowlers came out for a semi tough shot this week. We had 168 entries this week. Cut scores were a +61 for the men and +22 for the women. This week, our three Super Seniors added to the board were Greg Reinhard (+27) and Leo Tartamella (+19) for the men and Frances Brandt (+21) for the women. That would give us 41 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week. For all qualifying squads our top qualifier for the Men was Casey Nelson with a +126, and for the women it was Veronica Boone with a +95. Each will get paid entries into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Series, and this week it was worth $1202. The top seed drew a 644 but we had no one that bowled that score. Next week at Bowling Square Lanes we will estimate the Match Series at $1500. For the qualifying this week, Mike Moore was the final person standing to go for the $2300 pot. He missed on his first shot and received a $50 consolation. We will add another $100 at Bowling Square Lanes for total of $2400. In the doubles this week, we had 139 groups get into the doubles, with 20 spots being paid out. The top prize this week went to Rodney Payne and Casey Nelson with a 1390 for $160. In 2nd place, it was Greg Kokanour and Marvin Crowder with a 1384 for $140. The low to cash was 1322; we paid out $1390 in doubles. In the semis this week we saw Romy Cajucom lead the field with a +120 to sit out and bowl for the title. Gerry Manuel came in second at +118 and would sit out the first round. It took a +52 for the men and women needed a +28 to make the top 16. This week, our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the match game worth $3500. The pot maxes out at that amount and we have a second pot growing and that is currently at $745. He drew a 273. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had no one that shot that score, so it will carry-over to next week and we will again go for the max of $3500 at Bowling Square Lanes. This week we had 10 new bowlers join us, and no returning member. Let s welcome these new bowlers to the club, Carol Tucker, Trent Griffiths, Marysa Keller, Junior Viray, Mitchell Weitzman, Aviv Auslander, John Dipiertro Jr, Chris Walston, Sammy Santiago Sr, Richard Arens and we would see 1 of the new bowlers make the semi-finals in their first time bowling. This would bring us to our Match Play finals now. In the first round the 7 losers were Deborah Sanders, Greg Kokanour, Brad LeCount, Anthony Borci, David Godinez, Cezar Marcella, and Rodney Payne. They would receive checks of $100 each. In the second round, the losers were Marvin Crowder, Annaliza Agoncillo, Vic Garcia, and Gerry Manuel. Each would get checks of $ This would get us to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $50 (Thomas Licauco) to a high of $100 (Tiffany Paulsen) depending on who would win. In this round we saw Ron Peter (3rd seed) bowling Alejandro Vela (8th seed). In this match, Ron would get the better of Alejandro with a 244 to 186 finish. In the other match we saw Thomas Licauco (6th seed) bowling Tiffany Paulsen (7th seed). In this match, Thomas would get the better of Tiffany in this match with a 233 to 171 final score. Alejandro and Tiffany finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $115 each. Our semi-final match was set to be bowled on 17 and 18; we had our 3rd and 6th seeds into the top 16 bowling each other. In our horses this week we would see Thomas paying $50 and Ron paying $78 if they win their match. In this match, Ron would stake Thomas to a 37 pin based on Handicap difference. But Ron started out on fire by opening up with a Ham bone (4 strikes), but Thomas would stay clean for the first five frames. Ron would open in the fifth frame, but came back with three more strikes. Thomas opened in the sixth, seventh, and eighth frames to allow Ron to jump out to a 39 pin advantage. Ron would finish with a 216/232 to 162/215 final sending him to the title match. For those lucky investors that had Ron as a horse, he paid $78. Thomas finished 3rd and received $200. Romy being the top seed elected to start the match first. Romy would strike on his first ball and that would bring up Ron. He would get a strike also in the first frame. He would leave the 3-6 in the 2nd and only get 1 pin on his pick up. As the match continued, Romy would double in the 4th and 5th frames, but that would be matched by Ron with a double in the 5th and 6th frames. The match would continue to stay within 25 pins all the way till the 9th frame. But Romy would strike and that would bring up Ron. He left the 10 pin on his first ball and then missed the spare on his second shot. That was enough to send Romy to his fourth ABTA championship with a 226/243 to 192/208 finish. High but the cost covers 4 different events, Colleges BCS, AFL, NFL and Super Bowl Championship.. A total of $20,000 if all squares are sold out and $2,000 goes to GLDBA s 2011 Fund and the remaining $18,000 is split up in $5,400 in prizes for BCS, $2,700 each in prizes for AFL and NFL and $7,400 in prizes for Super Bowl. 7 BOWLING NEWS Page 7 Sysco & JAT Tied at 18 by Aimee Gomez Downey This week looked like a battle on many pairs, especially on the first place pair. Sysco s Vernon Adams /713, Paul Barraco /695, Charlie Kinstler /693 and Harry Wong /659 put up some huge scores after dropping the first game to Brylaw Accounting. For Brylaw, Billy Myers Jr /695, Charles Zelaya /679, Larry Stephens /664, and Garcell Bullocks /628 did well and got close again in game three, but only wound up with one win on the evening. Sysco has 18 while Brylaw dropped to third with 17 wins. In a match decided by three pins twice and twenty pins separating the teams at the end of the night, Junior Amateur Tour rode David Yamauchi /701 to four wins over Pro Approach. Alex Garcia led the way for Pro Approach, even going front nine game two, with his /667; teammate Jon Stone /617 broke six with a borrowed ball and house shoes thanks to the thief who stole all of his equipment. After the pins had settled, JAT had 18 wins. Katie Jake s Bar and Grill took four from Linder Insurance thanks to Jon Brandon /692, Kevin Yamauchi /685 and Kevin Valmonte /627. Shane Soper /684, Aaron Hodges 279/641 and Keith Klagge 262/614 put up a huge game at the end, but still only picked up the second game win. Katie Jake s has 16 and sits in fourth. Bowlers Depot swept thanks to Jeff Carr /681 and Raul Rosales /646. They bowled ABTA, who simply had another off night. Bowlers Depot also has 16 wins. Clyde s Video Games took four from Tifco thanks to Mike Villareal s /601 set. Tom Jackson led Tifco /603, and helped them to a third game win. In the corner, Storm Products used Paul Varela /652, Ramon Torres /629 and Leonard Ruiz 226/607 to earn four from Herzog Insurance s Danielle Schilling /631 and sub Katrina Fujikami taking her first stab at Cheetah, /603. Bowlium won four from Threadworks. Arnold Cheesman /654, Mark Fisser /652, Juan Camarena 245/612 and Cynthia Cheesman 227/606 led the way as Jon Reyes /713 and Eric Snow /651 of Threadworks tried to cover their team, but only got the first game. Zavala s Taquerias finally got some wins, sweeping Key Container, who had yet another tough week. Paul Danforth /675, Jeff Garrison /637 and Greg Neuer /606 led the way off of the last place pair. Next week will be another battle, so come prepared. Have a great week and see you all soon. Jim would have tied the record, if the ten pin he left in the tenth frame of his first game had fallen. If that ten pin falls, Jim s first game is 300 instead of 279. Those twenty-one additional pins would have brought his series up to a record tying 858. The record was set by JUSTIN BORLAND three years ago. Jim wasn t dissapointed with missing the record though. He told me that he was only dissapointed in not bowling a 849 series! What? What has 849 got to do with Jim s 837 or the house record of 858? Well, the Murtishaw family record is 848, and Jim wanted to break it. The 848 was bowled by Jim s wife Anita ten years ago. ANI- TA MURTISHAW bowled her big score in the California Girls League at Cal Oaks Bowl on a Tuesday morning. Anita s 848 is believed to be the highest certified three game series ever bowled by a woman in the Citrus Belt. What will the Murtishaw clan do next? Thanks to the BOWL- ING NEWS, we can all find out. So keep reading the Bowling News every week. Team Darkline is led by anchor man RAY COBB. Ray has been the most consistent bowler in the league. The result: WINS. With about one-third of the season in the books, and DEL ROSA LANES best bowlers facing a sport like oil pattern, averages are dropping. Only six of the Citrus Belt s top scratch bowlers are averaging 220. Ray Cobb is third best at 227. BOBBY CAMPAGNALE (241 average), and DAVE WOD- KA (240) are still one and two, with Cobb, DENNIS HORAN (225), ZIGGY CZAJA (222) and CORKY DeMAIO (220) right behind. CORA WAIS (200) is leading the ladies, with NICOLE ELLI- SON (199) just behind. Nicole has the high game (278) and series (727) for the ladies. Cora and Nicole recommend all SoCal bowlers keep up with the latest news in our sport by reading the BOWLING NEWS. They both join me in thanking the Bowling News for keeping all of us informed.

Another One For The Books! by Carol Mancini NORWALK I was in the office of a local bowling center last week and watched the following scene. A female customer, of sturdy build, walked up to the desk and started talking to the manager. He asked her how she liked bowling in his new beginners league. She said the people were nice and she wished she had taken up bowling a long time ago. He then asked if she was taking advantage of the Sunday morning practice special rates. Her reply, PRACTICE? PRACTICE? I m not good enough to practice! My T-shirts will be on sale soon! Bowling After Dark! It s A Swell Time, It s The Wright Time To Strike The Day Away... by Joy McGregor ANAHEIM And so the song goes... for David Wright that is. David was actually rockin AND strikin in the 590 Classic Friday morning and altho there was no Christmas tree, he did find some magic on the lanes. Ho-Ho-Ho! David tossed games of and 259 for 711 and added a 211 to record a spirited 922. A very jolly outing David! Shawn St. Andre also feeling the spirit of the season, found a little holiday magic of his own on games of and 226 to ring in a nice 914 set. Super sub John Conway is certainly no elf but he sure can construct some pretty strikes. He started his day on a 176 then jumped on the assembly line producing and 246 (734) to wrap up a pretty 910 package. Other presentable scores: Missy Parkin , Martin Angulo , Willy Bordenave , Bob Gosnell , Terry Brent , Anderson Alcaraz , Rose Williams , Ed Hermance , Miguel Rosales , Karen Mauricio , Karen Bagnall , Juan Sandoval , Don Gut-Omen , Janine Ditch , John Phillips , Al Lara , Don Gardner 247, Rod Cantrell 236, Rich Heid 228, John Velasquez 228, Dora Miller 225, Janet Anderson 224, Melissa Fan 224, Larry Green 223, Shig Shozi 217, Tony Chaco 216, Teri Hefner 216, Drew Parkin 213, Dick McKenzie 213, Norm Walker 213, Josh Boisoneau 210, Jack Wilson 210, Kantral Williams 209, Tom Stearn 209, Marie Barbush 208, Nancy Smith 205, April Anderson 203, Cindy Miles 203, Alan Bloom 202 and Jong Lee 201. It was so nice to see Carl Adinolfi visit so soon after his back surgery. His recovery is coming along nicely although he ll be sidelined from bowling for some time but knowing Carl s love of the game, he ll be back sooner. Very fashionable back brace Carl!
