Phone Website bowls@rockhamptonbowls.com.au Find RBC on Facebook Club News Michelle Landry Working for the Community On July 5 th. July, Ursula Harrison held her Patroness Day. In keeping with the modern trend of having enjoyment while playing bowls, the theme for the day was pink. All who dressed in pink or in keeping with the pink theme, the ladies all looked marvelous. The men helping on the day also took their part for the occasion. RBC Lady President, Janet Stewart, will give her monthly report that will include Ursula s Day. Below are some photos taken on the day. Ursula Harrison, Val Hegarty, Val King, Maureen Diplock, Maureen Callow Patron Norm Diplock presenting flowers to Ursula Harrison Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Ladies Presidents Report. The Jove able Men`s Senior Vice President Noel Roberts, looking after all the ladies for their drinks and as you can see, dressed for the occasion RBC Competition Director & Director of the green helping on the day This has been a busy month for all, starting with the Keppel Coast Shield; our girls as usual played an excellent game. We were able to rustle up two teams for the CQ Carnival and again we played well, it was an enjoyable day. Teams also played at North Rockhampton Masters Triples and Gracemere Mixed Triples. A team was going to Diggers but due to my dithering about we missed a place in the event. I attended the first morning of the Champion of Champions District Level at Gracemere; the green was good according to the players. Once again really nice weather. Although the scores were close it wasn t enough to move onto the next level. Next year for sure. Pretty in Pink Patroness Day was a great success due to the hard work by the usual dedicated band of workers. I extend my thanks to them as I know Patroness Ursula does as well. Victoria Park Presidents day on Thursday 20 th the weather was glorious which made the day very pleasant indeed as did the play, people and the lunch. Keep in mind the annual Morning Tea on the 11 th September, Multi-draw prizes, slices and small cakes are needed. Theme Weddings with a Difference. Watch the notice board for further information. It would be nice if more members put their hands up and volunteered so that everyone has a part in the running of club events and everyone gets to enjoy them. Unfortunately there is a rather extensive sick list, the club extends best wishes to all for a speedy recovery all round. August Calendar 02 Emu Park Presidents Day. 07 YBCILS Five a Side. 4 Happy Birthday from all your fellow Bowlers Mark Tyler 01,Joy Liddell 03, Graham Harris 10, Peter Tyler 16, Norm Diplock 17, Ena Sinclair 21, Kev Weaver 22, Pat Fulwood 24, Doug Simpson 26, Brian Hegarty 30 You would have read in the last newsletter that Jobs Queensland will be doing various jobs around the Club. These are mostly young people from the community that find it very difficult to get a job because of no previous work experience. Your Management Committee have taken on the task of working with their Supervisor to list work that they are capable of doing and keeping within the Health & Safety act and their limitations. It is a great scheme by the Queensland Government to help these people to get experience & at the same time help clubs to improve their facilities. Your Management Committee is planning to complete all the jobs that have been listed for some time now that the few Volunteers have had no spare time to do. At various stages an inconvenience to members will happen and we ask for your consideration and support of these young men in trying to get experience. The season is certainly in full swing with our southern visitors. A great deal of them has been coming here for many years. Recently I had the opportunity to play against the Miller Brothers and it gave me the opportunity to discuss with them what their club does and the experience they gain from the huge number of clubs they visit. Communication is a great thing and a lot can be learned from these visitors when spending the afternoon with them. No doubt it is a two way education of what clubs do. The Club chairman recently drafted an article for inclusion in the Queensland Bowler magazine. However following a request from Jacob Morgan from Bowls Australia we were also invited to submit the article for consideration as Story of the Year. Bowls Australia`s Representatives have come into a lot of opposition from most clubs when they have tried to promote Jack Attack and the PBL Competition. It was indicated to the Management Committee that most clubs live in the past and fail to comprehend the modern way bowls are going. We received a great deal of praise to have a go at Jack Attack. Bowls Australia commented that the RBC Facebook on Jack Attack was up there with the best. The Management Committee wish to thank Trent Shillington & Peter Thurecht for making this so successful. The Management Committee also thanks those members that could also see the merit in such an event and helped with the many tasks on each night. Following is the Chairman`s article-jack Attack-Give it a go.story to Bowls Australia. Find us on and Facebook Rockhampton Bowls Club & Jack Attack Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 4

Jack Attack Give it a go. The Rockhampton Bowls Club (RBC) is one of the oldest lawn bowls clubs in Central Queensland having been established in During that time the club has endured two world wars, the great depression of the 1930 s and more recently, the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the odd cyclone or two. For most community based sports clubs the good times and the tough times are cyclic. Currently RBC is experiencing relatively good times. However this has only been possible because of the club s sound fiscal management and the strong and growing membership base prepared to work hard to ensure the club functions successfully both on and off the green. The club has no paid employees and is run solely by volunteers. A couple of years ago the club underwent structural change with the Ladies Bowls Club and Men s Bowls Club amalgamating as one club under the leadership of a Management Committee. This arrangement has proved very successful. A visit from Paul Jackson, Regional Bowls Manager (Tropical North Queensland) during early March was informative on the new format of Lawn Bowls called Jack Attack. Prior to Paul s visit little was known of Jack Attack in our region other than it was the new format being used in the Premier Bowls League (PBL). Certainly no clubs in Central Queensland had ever played this new format of the game, even though the game was being played down south. RBC s Chairman, Peter Tyler OAM, supported by long term Secretary and club stalwart Bernie Gottke, together with a few keen members, decided that RBC should become involved with this new style of play. At that time there was very little interest in Jack Attack, some didn t see it as value for their green fees when a Jack Attack game could be all over in under an hour. Due to the scepticism of the majority of members at the time it was decided to try out the format in a tournament aimed solely at Non-Bowlers i.e. barefoot bowlers. Two of our younger members, Peter Thurecht and Trent Shillington were very keen to assist and they were tasked with putting together a competitive competition, over eight weeks, for Barefoot Bowlers using the PBL s Jack Attack rules. Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 5

The club approached long term sponsors, the Capricornian bank who were only too pleased to donate a Perpetual Shield called the Rockhampton Bowls Club (Barefoot Bowlers) Jack Attack Tournament Capricornian Shield. The club would provide trophies for each member of the winning team and Silver Medallions for runners-up. All was in readiness. All we needed was to find a few teams of Barefoot Bowlers willing to play competitive bowls each Friday night for eight weeks (including a final). Jack Attack rules applied i.e. two bowl triples, two tie break sets of five ends each. Each team can have a minimum of three (maximum six) registered players with one power-play end per set. Peter Thurecht and Trent Shillington set to work to find as many teams as possible of nonbowlers to play in this unique and innovative competition. The club thought eight teams would be good. Any player currently affiliated with a club registered under Bowls Australia, were ineligible. Through the power of social media the teams started to materialise. Peter and Trent had pulled off the seemingly impossible with the following 15 teams registering for our inaugural Capricornian Shield Jack Attack Tournament. 1 The Rat Pack 2 The Ring-Ins 3 The S.Gs 4 Living the Dream 5 The Bolsover Bowlers 6 The Overarmers 7 We Are Here For The Beer 8 The Bowlerellas 9 Lawto s Legends 10 Sharkies 11 Footloose 12 The Bowling Stones 13 The Guacabowlies 14 The Hairy Bowlers 15 The Incredibowls Most teams dressed up for the occasion, many with their team names on tee shirts or in some fancy dress. There was plenty of time to get to know each other prior to the games as the club offered food such as steak burgers, hot dogs, beef or chicken and gravy rolls etc. prior to games commencing at 7pm. Local band Generation Gap volunteered their services free and played Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 6

70 s, 80 s and 90 s music most Friday nights during the tournament. The band was a great hit with everyone involved with the event. Even the police who attended following a noise complaint found the music entertaining (we weren t asked to turn it down). Plenty of Club volunteers were on hand to supervise the rinks and give these novice Bowlers a few tips on their bowling technique and to supervise the scoring after each end and ensure score cards were completed correctly. As the weeks went by the standard of bowling improved significantly and volunteers were needed much less. It was clear many were actually starting to love the game of lawn bowls, a game they had previously thought was for the oldies. After eight weeks of competitive bowling the Inaugural Capricornian Shield Jack Attack Tournament (for Barefoot Bowlers) was taken out by Sharkies in a tie break final played against Lawto s Legends. The Sharkies are group of four mates who travelled 35 km from Yeppoon and back each week to play in the tournament. The club had stepped out of it comfort zone a little taking on such an event. However, it proved a great success. The tournament was a success financially through green fees, meal and bar sales. More importantly a group of young Australians were taught the game of lawn bowls and grew to love it. The club has increased its membership as a number of these players have now signed on to play community bowls as social members of the club. Our next Season of the Capricornian Shield Jack Attack Tournament (for Barefoot Bowlers) is scheduled to commence on 4 August If your club is not currently embracing this new format of the game, give it a go. 8 Chairman s Report. The last month has been quiet with regard to functions and this has given our club volunteers a well-earned rest. However, ahead we have the next season of Jack Attack commencing on Friday 4 August This season will a little shorter (six weeks) than our first season which ran for eight weeks. We are also hosting one of our biggest functions towards the end of the month with potentially guests for a sit down meal. They have also indicated they wish to participate in barefoot bowls. It is also my understanding that they have hired a 14 piece orchestra for the occasion. Due to the size of the function the club has arranged a caterer to provide a two course meal. However, as many helpers as possible are required to run the bar and supervise on the green. Access to the workshop area has been opened up through what was previously the cleaners store room. The door is to be kept bolted at all times unless opened for access. The cleaning store is now located in a section of the back shed area that has just been renovated. This area of the shed will also house some archival material once further renovations are complete. This work is being performed by young men from Jobs Queensland. Their labour is free. The club pays for all materials etc. Jobs Queensland workers will be around the club for some time yet, working through our to do list. The Management Committee has been involved with updating the Club s By-Laws and the Standard Operating Procedures document. A draft copy of the revised By-Laws will shortly be placed onto the notice board for 14 days for members to have an opportunity to comment on the proposed changes, prior to being adopted. If anyone wishes to provide comment/ feedback please see either the Secretary or myself within the 14 day consultation period. Next of Kin forms are available on the table near the front door of the club. If members are injured while at the club it is important that we know who to contact in such circumstances. Happy Bowling Peter Tyler OAM CHAIRMAN Rockhampton Bowls Club Inc. Newsletter. Page 8

Comments from the Secretary In the future you will read a lot about succession planning. If you are unaware of what that means, read on. Members on committees are not there forever. There are some very crucial Roles on Committees. ie, The Treasury of a club in this day & age is very complex. Very few members would have the ability to be a Treasurer without previous training. The Secretary is a very time consuming position to be involved with all the complex issues required by law to administer a club. The Chairperson and the Vice Chairperson, like the Treasurer and the Secretary must have an overall understanding of financial affairs and the Governance of a Club. Succession planning is to groom members to fill the shoes of committee members when they decide to retire from a committee. Members need to decide now if they intend to be on a committee. This would enable them to work now with present committee persons so that a smooth transition can happen when the time arrives. Not to do so will jeopardise the future of the Club as it operates at the present time. Your Management Committee are finalising various documents of how RBC operates. The By-laws will give guidance of how the club operates. The Structure and Operation Plan will give guidance on the duties of committee members and especially the financial operation of the club. The 5 year plan has listed the aims for a Management Committee to achieve to have better facilities and comfort for the members. The Participation Plan lists the Executive Summary, Vision, Values, Current Position, Growth Program, Resourcing, Operational Planning & Financial Management, Monitoring & Evaluation. The Management Committee is well aware of the fact that clubs will find it very hard to survive on just social bowls. It is very essential that new avenues of income must be ongoing. I urge members to consider being more involved with the facts of the cost of operating a club instead of thinking the costs are exaggerated. The Men`s Bowls Committee will also be looking for a new President and other positions at the next AGM. Again I urge members to take an interest in our great club now and be more involved. 10 On the road with Michelle Landry MP We are currently in the winter break of Parliamentary sittings, which means that I'm able to spend more time throughout the electorate, talking to people and hearing first hand the issues on the ground. Joining with Senator Matt Canavan and some of my State LNP colleagues, I toured the western mining towns that make up part of Capricornia. It was fantastic to head out to the Adani Carmichael mine site and also to see how well the Peak Downs mine near Moranbah is going. We also hosted a Politics in the Pub in Clermont with near on 100 people in attendance. Over the last month, it has been a pleasure for our region to host the United States military, during their bi-annual Tailsman Saber exercise at Shoalwater Bay. The joint exercise brings in 1,000's of troops from the United States and throughout Australia, training and honing their military skills It was also fantastic to have the Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disabilities, the Hon Jane Prentice in Rockhampton, to discuss the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Due to the 2017 Federal Budget, the NDIS is now fully funded and will go on to help thousands upon thousands of Australian's over the years. While it' been a busy few months delivering on our promises for Capricornia, if you have any issues or enquiries, please don't hesitate to contact my office on or michelle.landry.mp@aph.gov.au.
