@!qwes Rocky s Friendliest Rock n Roll Club Rockin Rocky Since November 2003 Club Newsletter for JUNE 2016 President: Craig Thomas ph Treasurer: Paul Lidster Vice President: Phil Draper ph Secretary: Doreen Thomas ph Demo Co-Ordinator: Clair Zerner ph Club Mobile: Club admin@rockyrockers.com P.O.Box 866, Rockhampton https// JUNE BIRTHDAYS Phil Draper Paul Lidster Dawn Wallace Cheryl Clarke Ruth Robinson A Very Happy Birthday from Rockers Rockers to all. All members now get a drink voucher for their birthdays which can be cashed in at dances or socials. These are usually collected from the front table of the hall. A time limit of 12 months has now been placed on the collection of these tickets. CLUB NEWS AND HAPPENINGS May has been a very busy month with club activities. We started off with our social on the 1 st of the month. We had a good turnout for the afternoon, plenty of dancing with Greg again playing for us and heaps of food for afternoon tea. You must be the drawcard Greg, because our numbers doubled from the previous week. Ruth Robinson won the raffle at the social. The next club function was our first trial of the C.D. Dances which we are now offering sometimes when no suitable ( for us) band is playing at the C.Q. It was well attended on the 7 th May with approx. 27 people and all had a very enjoyable evening. Thanks Phil for the organising the night. We will let you know in plenty of time when the next one is but Phil is thinking towards the end of June.
Here are some photos from our Mt. Morgan demo at the end of last month. We all had a lovely day out. If you did not attend, please try to do so next year, you will not be sorry.
We held a demo for Relay for Life at Colts Rugby Grounds which was well attended. Pictured are some of our club members always ready to help out with the demos for the good of the community. Good on you guys. They are, at back, Ruth and Col Hooton, Ian Tyrell, Clair Zerner, Claude Burnett, Phil Draper and Janet heath in front. A lot of these members travelled from Mt. Morgan and Gracemere to attend this demo. Our May dance was held on the 21 st May with a rock and roll theme. Music was by Billy Guy. The dance was WOW. It is a long time since we had a turnout like we had on Saturday. Over 50 people attended and if you did not come, then you missed a great, and I mean great night. The atmosphere, along with the music, kept everyone on the floor all night. Members and guests dressed up in theme and it was terrific to see all those rock and roll skirts and petticoats out. Craig Stewart and his wife Deanne took out best dressed, Craig dressed up as a bodgie and looked the real thing, maybe he was one when he was younger. (Are you old enough for that,craig)..chris Flintoff took out best dressed male, though you had to look twice, the outfit was so good, he was mistaken for a lady by someone. Best dressed female was Ebony, who came with Gil Kerr. (Sorry, no last name for Ebony). Don t they all look great.
Craig and I went up to Ferns recently for our anniversary and look who we ran into up there, 3 of our favourite musicians. What a fun afternoon we had.
C.D. DANCE Our first C.D. dance was held on the 7 th May at the Pipe Band Hall and it was a success. Some 20 odd members and friends of the club attended. These dances are being put on because, in the future, there are some weekends when not so good bands are playing at C.Q. Leagues and we all know we love our dancing. These dances have to pay for themselves so we need firm commitments from people /members about coming. We are hoping for pre-paid commitments, hopefully $5. Please let Phil or myself know if you are interested and WILL BE THERE. If we do not have the numbers, then the dance will not go ahead. Phil will be available at the social on Sundays, and at the lessons on Tuesday nights. Alternatively, let me know through club or phone and I will pass the message on. The next one has yet to be organised but hopefully towards the end of June. MEMBERSHIP DRAW. The winner of the members draw in May was again Craig Stewart who was there for the meeting so we passed the tickets over. I am not sure if he came for the meeting or the tickets again. He said he was going to win again. I wonder if he can pick lotto numbers just as well. DEMOS. Please contact Clair on or at the lessons on Tuesday nights for more information if you would like to be part of the demo team. Clair is always chasing dancers. There are a few demos coming up. Shalom Nursing home 121 Maloney Street, Nth R ton 10a.m. til a.m. Morning tea provided and Greg Rea playing. DANCE LESSONS Dance Lessons are held every Tuesday night at the Masonic Club, corner of Kent and William Streets. The first lesson is free and beginners start at p.m. with intermediate lessons after this. Cost is $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers. Everyone is welcome. The raffle we now hold each Tuesday night has proved successful so will be continued. Tickets are $1 each and the prize is 2 free dance lessons, not bad for a possible $1 investment. Thank you to all who support the raffle each week. This brings in much needed funds so the club can continue holding the dances for all and paying bills, of course.
MEMBERSHIP Membership expires at the end of June. Fees for the financial year of 2016/2017 will be $15. Paul will be happy to take your membership money any time at the socials, meetings or Tuesday nights. Membership forma are available also. Please fill out relevant details, especially if you have moved, changed your or phone. If details are not up to date, then you may not receive all club communications. Benefits of being a member include reduced price of dance lessons, reduced price to dances, you are entered in the membership draw each month with aa possibility to win 2 tickets to any of our dances. Also available to members is a free birthday drink voucher which entitles you to a soft drink, wine or beer, courtesy of the club. This means that if you attended every club function for the year, you would have saved at least $115 for the year. Not bad for an investment of $15. PENS We now have pens with our name, Rocky Rockers, on them for sale for $2. If you are interested please contact either Paul or myself. DANCE BANDS Please members, we are getting very limited in our choice of bands to play for the club. If you hear any bands and think they might be a good choice to play for our club, then please get a card, fee they charge and this is important please pass it onto one of the committee members. THIS IS YOUR NEWSLETTER Please members, this is your newsletter put out to keep every one in the loop about what is going on in dance circles. If you have any news which you would like to share, please forward to club address or my own dcthomas2@westnet.com.au Please also remember photos. We have functions and gatherings and members take photos. It would be appreciated if you could send some of these photos onto Rocky Rockers so they can be used in the newsletter as well as Facebook if you are willing. Thank you. Please find out about us on Facebook and webpage addresses above on our title page. Kerry does a good job of keeping it up to date so tell your friends all about. Also, we list our functions and some of the other on the back page of our newsletter. Do yourself a favour and print it out and put it on the fridge for easy reference.
CONTACTS I have been contacted a few times lately for contact numbers for the committee. Please note - the phone numbers of the committee members are across the top of the newsletters for your convenience. I have added Clair s number to the top because of members needing to contact her for demo days. All the other numbers are self explaining. Thank you. NEXT DANCE Our next dance will be held 23 rd July with our very own Greg Rea playing for us. The theme is D so it will be easy for me, won t it?,. Seriously, this should be a good theme, so easy to find something easy to wear and fun as well. What more could you ask for. Also, due to health reasons, Mirror Image has cancelled the October dance but I have managed to book HiWay to fill the spot so please change your calendars. SOCIAL AFTERNOONS Our next social afternoon is on 12 th June at the Pipe Band Hall at 2.30p.m. til 4.30p.m. Come along and bring your friends. Greg Rea plays for us and it is a friendly social afternoon. We all bring something for afternoon tea and cost is only $2 per person and that includes a raffle which is 2 tickets for a R.R.I. dance.. NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be held on the 15 th June at 7.00p.m. at the Masonic Club in William Street. Please, if you are interested in the club, come along and have your input into what happens in the club. There were a few new faces at our last meeting which was great. New ideas and input are crucial to the club moving forward. The following dates are for the rest of the year 15 th June 20 th July 17 th August 21 st September 19 th October 16 th November 14 th December
.WORKSHOP SAVE THE DATE We have now planned a workshop for the weekend of the October dance with Beris and Jon Thomae. They usually teach rock and roll and partner dances but we do not have all details worked out yet re dances being taught or p rice but keep the dates of the weekend, 29/30 th October free. We have a dance that night with HiWay booked to play so will be a very full week end. I have sent a booking form to Rockhampton High School Hall to book for the entire weekend, if possible as this means we do not have to pack up everything and move camp after the dance on Saturday night Gladstone Just Rock are also trying for a workshop on the weekend of their birthday dance, 16 th July. This all hinges on whether they get the numbers but we will keep you all updated. EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST WANTED Ali and Kerry Wehlow have asked if we can hold a rock and roll weekend at Ferns in October, preferably the second weekend. In the past, Rocky Rockers have done this and it has always been a fun weekend of dancing, good company, good music and socialising. If you would be interested in coming up to Byfield for the weekend, let me know because, as usual, it would depend on numbers. It need not be expensive, The cabins are around $150 night but sleeps 6 or 8 if we share and we all benefit. There is also camping sites available if you prefer that way. You need not even eat at the restaurant, cook your meals at the cabins. Anyway, think about it and let us know. It could be a real social event for t he members to get together and share our mutual love of all dance and music.
