2 Notes from the Board Columnist: Millie Mills Winter has finally arrived, but never fear, Diane Rice has many Special Sunday activities planned to help keep us warm. In February, we are celebrating Valentine s Day on Feb. 14th. The last Sunday of the month (February 28th), we are a having a special Recognition night. During the halftime break we will be recognizing our Past Kings, Queens and Ambassadors along with other volunteers from the CDC. Note: Letters inviting past K & Q s will not be mailed out this year, but we encourage them to attend and be recognized for their past contribution to the CDC. We are looking for two members (singles or married couple) to represent our club as Ambassadors in The main duty of this position is to welcome new people and help them feel at ease. Opening the dance each Sunday night would be your option. Please see any of your Board Members if you have an interest in serving in this capacity. We also have a vacancy on the Board for someone to fill for the remainder of this year. Duties would include sending out Get Well cards, etc., attending Board Meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month and working at the door approximately once every two months. If you have an interest, please see a Board Member. I am happy to let you know that a check for $200 has been sent to Kids Dance Outreach (KDO), the group our club helps support. Each Sunday night, 50% of the club s portion of the income from your purchase of 50/50 tickets goes to support this group. Until next Month, stay warm and keep dancing. 4 Dance Instruction February From our Dance Instructor Chairman Freda Hutcheson Our February intermediate/advanced dance lessons will be taught by Rob Jenkins. We will be treated to his brand of dry humor and some romantic Tango steps just in time for Valentine s Day. The beginner s dance class will be in the small ballroom. They will be taught by our member volunteers. The dance lesson in the small ballroom is free with paid admission to the dance. Our members choose to volunteer because of their love for dancing. We thank our last month s instructors Xavier Medina and Chase Thompson as well as our volunteers Bess and Dennis Dworski. Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning some new dance steps. 5 MY CDC, by Dave Gretencord Three years ago, I had a trace of interest in dancing which was noticed by my oldest daughter, Kelly, as plans and preparations were being made for her upcoming wedding. At the wedding reception I watched couples on the dance floor performing many wonderful routines. At the time, I thought how cool it would be to be able to display such dance talent. My youngest daughter, Sarah, observed and picked up on the early stages of my dancing curiosity, which later turned into enthusiasm. In January 2014, Sarah signed me up on-line for "Groupon" for two private ballroom dance lessons at a newly opened dance studio in Zionsville near my home. A year or so had passed since the wedding and by this time my eagerness to dance had somewhat waned. Giving the matter some thought I said, "Why not. I'll give dancing some attention." In January 2014, I took the first "step" and attended the two private ballroom dance lessons, both of which I enjoyed. In February 2014, I signed up for a few more private lessons. However, with no dance partner other than my instructor and no other dance venues (at that time other venues were unknown to me) other than the private dance studio in Zionsville, zeal for dance instructions had worn down and tapered-off to disinterest for me. And so, for the remainder of the winter as well as Spring and Summer 2014, ballroom dancing was placed on the back shelf. In Fall of 2014, while searching online for other dance possibilities I discovered Riolo dance studio downtown Indianapolis where I first met Ben Davis. After attending a few group lessons and dances I began to build up interest in ballroom dancing once again. There I received exposure to several wonderful dance groups such as Heartland and Indianapolis Seniors (IS), but my work schedule along with other commitments did not allow me to attend very often. A dance partner at Riolo invited me to the Continental Dance Club. Ben had also mentioned CDC because each event was held on Sundays which better suited my timeline. He encouraged me to visit and assured me of an appealing venue along with wonderful members. Truer words have never been spoken. A Sunday evening in October 2014 was my first dance experience at CDC. Liking this venue so well, I became a member the following month. So, after having been a member frequent in attendance for one year now, I have never met finer people anywhere. The board does a fantastic job planning many wonderful mixtures of functions, events, and themes. The bands, music variety, and other entertaining groups cannot be topped. I have very much enjoyed meeting and dancing with many warm and friendly ladies and hope my affiliation with Continental Dance Club lasts for many more years. page 5
