PRESIDENT S REPORT by Frank TUSKES The season of 2016/17 was a year of investment, insurance for our future, a new roller, a new bowling machine, a new change room, a new on field senior structure and a new Business Administrator. I'd like to thank all our generous sponsors, we have gained a few extra this year and of course maintained the relationships with so many of our loyal ones. Warwick Hadfield is ensuring our club and partners receive the highest exposure through digital media. Well done Wocka! I'd like to thank our General and Junior Committees and all the volunteers, we all work tirelessly in the background so we can all enjoy the simple pleasures of just playing cricket. There's a lot to do off the field even before a ball is bowled. Whether it's arranging the juniors as Anthony Jefferies has done for the past six years, Phil Morgan ensuring our bar is full of cold beverages, Phil & Karen Twaddle tidying up the rooms, Devon Royce picking up the phone to speak to a player, Tom Levick opening the club rooms on a Friday night for all the MILO kids, David Barnes & Bernie McGuane updating scores on a Saturday, Mark Ainsworth budgeting our clubs finances, Brendan Twaddle ordering the clubs merchandise so our members can wear the colours, Zac Stokes helping out where required. There is no such thing as having to many volunteers, we need more. Thanks to all the quiet helpers around the club, Graeme Taylor, David Murray, Don Royce, Max Ellis, Graeme Chisholm, Gavan Clark, Greg Wells, Neville Crane and of course our Patron David Shaw. Anthony Jefferies will be handing over the Junior Co-Ordinator role after six very long seasons. Jaffas was last year awarded a life membership, well deserved, his legacy at our club and the GCA s will be long remembered. With Jaffa s exiting we have Alg Johannes, Aaron Croft, Geoff Williams and a junior sub-committee ready to take our kids to the next level. They will need assistance and I urge as many parents and players to come forward and volunteer their time as managers and coaches. Well done on the Under 17 s & U13 s Premierships this season. Coached by Adrian Windt and Geoff Williams respectively. The U17 s flag especially sweet, with Jaffas having his final hurrah, his son Hayden leading his team to a memorable victory at Grovedale Secondary College. It was fantastic to see so many supporters cheering on our next crop of stars. Ian Simpson had a large involvement this year organising our ride on roller and being the clubs curator. Simmo has decided to pull up stumps on the curator role, we wish him all the very best and thank him for all his efforts over the past few seasons. Rod Kiddle has stated he won't be going on next year with his current role as 2nds Captain, he'll be assisting Aaron Croft and the junior committee with his skills and passing that onto the next N e w t o w n &Ch i l w e l l C C A n n u a l R e p o r t /17 Page 3

generation. I'd like to thank Rocket, three years ago he re-joined and three years later we are back and ready to have another tilt. Many thanks Rocket! Phil Morgan has retired from the General Committee. No one deserves to take it a little easier than Morgo, he has been a beacon, on and off the field. I want to congratulate Morgo for his time served on the committee over the many years. Well done Morgo! I'd like to personally thank Dominic Manthorpe for his second season with us. He was disappointed in having to play 2nds and we had challenging debates and discussions throughout the year. Thankfully Dom stayed the course and contributed to the club s success this year with some outstanding personal efforts. Many thanks to Brendan and Florianne for their kind hospitality in housing Dom. Our second Pom this year was Jordan Clark. Jordan totally absorbed himself into all parts of the club, juniors, seniors and anywhere else he was required. At the end of the season he was awarded with so many honours, the Jack Sing, Greg Wells, Vin Hassett and the Bob Merriman Medals. It was well deserved and it s so good to see JC reaping the rewards back home, clearly stamping his name in the County Cricket competition, we hope that some of our Two-Blues influences have rubbed off. Also thanks to Ellie, arriving a few weeks after JC, she was a breath of fresh air, taking part in the clubs entire season of social functions and keeping the lads in check, particularly Wink, Hosko and Bazz. Also thanks to Don for accommodating Jordy and Ellie. Dev and I honestly had no idea what we were committing all of them into but luckily we were blessed to have three wonderful people sharing a cricket season together. I know for a fact Jordan and Ellie thought the world of Don and there stay here was so much richer living with him. A big thanks to everyone for making our club so hospitable to all our newcomers. Not only to our two Pommies but also to our first year players, Cooper Bingham, Nick Waldie, Jordy White, Andrew Knott and the entire Sanders family. I'd like to thank everyone who contributed this year to the social functions, we had a few and weren t they wonderful events. Tom Levick and the social committee need to be congratulated. We got the gang here for the Glitter Gang, Past Players Day had so many legends, Double Wicket was so big that it could of gone on for as long as the Boxing Day Test, Pezzy & Sir Genius got the kids excited with their Christmas cheers, Reeanna, Kylie, Clare and Nicky doubled the numbers on the previous year with their Pink Stumps Day and of course Chis and Specs with the Major Raffle. All of them went on without a hitch and were ripper events. Many thanks to Clare Hamilton (Pink Saffron Catering), being the resident chef isn't easy but she really does put on a feast on Thursday and Saturday nights. I'm very proud of everyone's efforts this season. To finish sixth in the club championship was a huge effort, well done to all. The firsts had a great season because they committed to one another to play every week. The lower grades unfortunately had too much unavailability, which was probably the difference, especially the seconds and thirds just missing out on finals. 7 must seek a greater commitment from everyone if we wish to be playing in March, surely we must make this a priority if we are to climb up the ladder. A big thanks to all the senior leaders who stepped up this season, particularly Yves Roussety in taking on the training co-ordinator role and being such a reliable lieutenant. No doubt Yves has become one of the clubs most favourite and loyal sons. Shane Franklin, who was probably hesitant in taking on the Club Captaincy but he was huge and it was fantastic to see. I think Shane enjoyed it too, a great example to everyone that if you went with the glass half empty option then you'd be now wondering what if. Thankfully Shane chose the glass half full and is now a fully-fledged Two-Blue even though it s only been a couple of years. Fantastic to see all the Franklins (three generations) on a Saturday afternoon watching the First XI on our famous balcony. I d like to also thank Damian Shanahan for being involved with our club. The playing and coaching group cannot speak highly enough of his coaching and ability to demonstrate how cricket needs to be played individually and as a team. We are most thankful that the extra time he does have outside of his demanding schedule he chooses to assist our club. Thanks Shanna s, it is most appreciated. Many thanks to Russell Mitchell, Adrian Windt, Anthony Devlin and Neville Crane, all the Captains of our senior hard wicket teams as well as Brendan Twaddle and Adam Kalz on our leadership team. Each one of you does an almighty job, selecting players, assisting at training and organising the match days. Your time and effort is much appreciated by everyone. A huge thanks to Devon Royce, he has been enormous with his will to assist our club. I'd like to just remind everyone of his day to day commitments, Dev continues to grow Donkrete, he continues to focus on the trials and tribulations of raising three teenage children and of course looks after his Dad, who last year had the most challenging year ever. Dev is already a LIFE MEMBER, so when I asked him to help this season I thought it may be a long shot. Thankfully Dev didn t question a thing, he setup a structure that is the envy of many other GCA clubs and is already looking at ways we can improve next season. To my fellow executive members, David Barnes (Business Administrator/Secretary) and Mark Ainsworth (Treasurer), thanks for all your efforts this season and total support. A simple message to all from myself is this, before the new season begins, please have a think on how you'd like to assist outside of what you are already doing. No excuses, we are all capable of offering something completely unique to the club. Big or small, we can make a difference and the more we have helping on and off the field the more successful we will be. Thanks again to all our Two-Blues Members, bring on season 2017/18. 8 SECRETARY S REPORT by David BARNES What a great season it was to be at Queen s Park and personally it was great to be back home! Firstly, I must congratulate Frank Tuskes for taking the legacy of Philip Morgan s diligent and passionate reign as 19 th N&CCC President and building that into solid base for a strong future. From the adoption by the playing group and the club of Two Blues, One Club, Respect It! the club set about reviewing and searching for improving all facets of life at Queen s Park and without doubt ticked the boxes in 2016/17. Financially, we enjoyed a budgeted season of resourcing the club starting with the new roller appeal which helped to realise a new roller and set the pace for a greater engagement by club community. Treasurer Mark Ainsworth is to be congratulated on overseeing and a well organised fiscal base with improved budget lines across the board. The fact that the club had a huge spending year on resources but was still able post a profit is a great result. Sponsorships were up with new partnerships formed and old ones reinforced. Congrats again to Morgo and Frank for engaging our loyal sponsors. This was of course greatly supported by our social media and communications which now set the standard for ensuring that sponsor DO receive something back for the loyalty and financial support. Congratulations to Warwick Hadfield whose great media skills combined with his passion for the club to lift our social media to new heights. Warwick s facebook post of the final winning moments from the 1 st XI match against St Josephs was the highlight of many great stories on our facebook and social media coverage. In terms of partnerships, we also need to remain vigilant with our community partnerships which often go unheralded. It is vital to maintain strong relationships with our local community including our nearby schools. Most important is our relationship with the City of Greater Geelong (in essence the largest sponsor of local cricket). We were fortunate to have both our hard wicket match surfaces upgraded in 2016/17 which were long overdue. We also will reap the benefits of the long overdue $900,000 change rooms upgrade, soon to be completed. Such and future opportunities are possible due to our strong standing in the community and we must continue to develop local, state and federal political relationships. It should be noted that the Club went to appeal at the CoGG to ensure that the designated project funds actually came to fruition and the change room renovation project realised. We should also acknowledge the support of the GCA for their part in completed projects in 2016/17. As previously mentioned we thank those who supported the roller appeal especially major contributors Ian Simpson and Chris Lynch. Thanks also to Simmo for his diligent work as curator and we wish him the best for the future. The club committee must work to provide N e w t o w n &Ch i l w e l l C C A n n u a l R e p o r t /17 Page 6

quality playing and training conditions as a priority and this will be the case for the coming seasons. Without doubt the biggest improvement was the seen on the field with improved playing performances at all levels of the club. The efforts of Devon Royce and the club coaches and support staff were outstanding and the professional way all went about their particular roles was inspiring and infectious. The new Cricket Department model in season 2016/17 set the standard for future seasons with shared workloads, defined roles and an overview to all playing areas including recruiting. The many decisions made by Dev and his leadership group provided the nemesis for a new hands on extended playing leadership and player engagement. The decision to engage our two English imports was inspired with both Jordan Clark and Dom Manthorpe not only providing outstanding on field performance but also immersing themselves in our club culture. Both were active participants around the club and value added to our club. This of course along with the great work of our team leaders has led to a RENEWED RESPECT of the N&CCC within the Geelong cricket community. A vital part of the club trademark and real acclamation of that benchmark set prior to the start of the season. Congratulations to Brendan Twaddle for his work with club merchandise. In a season where our major provider struggled to deliver the goods, BJ did a great job under the BLK stress and we will look to improving and making this a more manageable area in 2017/18. Recognition and representation of the club entity is vital and BJ has provided a strong base for us all to feel we belong. Socially we had an active and varied social calendar with the season s highlights being the Russell Mitchell Roast and the Pink Stumps Day which were both brilliant club events. Thanks to Tom Levick and the social committee including Reeanna Pavletich and Kylie Chapman for their great work which included the return of The Glitter Gang to Queen s Park for a memorable performance. We should not underestimate the success of Double Wicket Day and the brilliant player engagement should set that traditional club event solidly back in the club calendar. Thanks also to the two Phils (Morgan and Twaddle) for ensuring the clubrooms were resourced and maintained to the high level we expect of our sporting clubs and the events conducted within. Our Juniors, to me, seem the best resourced and parentally guided group I have seen at this club or any other. The skill level and sporting nouse (not just cricket) of the individual coaches is extraordinary and can only help but mold our young members into better cricketers and more importantly people. From the Club perspective we need to provide a Newtown & Chilwell culture that will assure our current young members will strive to be competitive and passionate senior cricketers with our club or on the pathway to greater honours and cricket dreams. 10 This is our Club s greatest challenge to engage our juniors, along with their parents to be part of a sustainable cricket and family club at Queen s Park. Tony Jefferies over the past six seasons has shown brilliant leadership and laid the foundation for the club to ensure its future. It is now up to us to work to provide energetic and creative leadership and provide an atmosphere for our club to develop. This has been recognised by the junior committee in their planning meetings and I am positive that Alg Johannes will be a fine general in his new role of junior coordinator or director of junior cricket. Volunteers are the centre stone of every successful community organisation throughout our lucky country. We are blessed with many at Queen s Park, so let s make it easy for them. A defined role that they enjoy and have the support and resources to complete and come back with enthusiasm week in, week out and hopefully year in, year out! I see this as my key role at the club and remain open to assist and help develop. Personally after 10 years at the Geelong Cricket Club, having been taught by experts at Queen s Park, it was a pleasure to reacquaint with and meet so many passionate people who are engaged in creating a new and vibrant N&CCC culture that can bring us success in the coming seasons. I look forward to working with you and enjoying the success that good planning, hard working volunteers, strong and committed players and an engaged club community can bring. 12 DIRECTOR of CRICKET s REPORT by Devon ROYCE I would firstly like to thank Frank for asking me to be Director of Cricket for season 2016/17. It has been and will always be an absolute honour and a privilege to fill the role. I am thoroughly enjoying it and I look forward to seasons ahead. Frank and the committee have a shared vision for NCCC. That vision cannot be realized without the huge contributions from a committed team of administrators and leaders within our club. It s such a pleasure working with Frank. He brings the best out of people. Thanks to all the committee for their efforts There are many loyal clubman who unselfishly give up their time for the club. Thanks to Ian Simpson for doing the role of curator. We appreciate all the countless hours and effort Simmo put into getting decks up for us in this tough year for grass growth. We thank you Simmo. David Barnes took on a role as cricket administrator this year and was of outstanding assistance to me personally this season. David s efforts for this club have been outstanding for many years. We are so lucky to have you Barneso. Season 2016/17 started at Presentation night March We started the process of putting together a new coaching, leadership and training structure. The job of club coach has become too much for just one person. We broke it down into a structure that would share the load, by each person taking on specific responsibilities. The team we came up with was- - Director Of Cricket & Chairman of Selectors Devon Royce - Coaching & Leadership Consultant Damian Shanahan - Training & Performance Coordinator Yves Rousetty - 1 st X1 Captain Shane Franklin - Batting Coach & 2 nd X1 Captain Rod Kiddle - Bowling Coach Phillip Twaddle - 3 rd X1 Captain Russell Mitchell - 4 th X1 Captain & U/17 Coach- Adrian Windt - Milo Coordinator. 13 On reflection of season 2016/17 and in reality it is a fantastic group of men, who all contributed in their own way to it being an enjoyable, satisfying and progressive season. We should be thankful to each and every one of these guys for what they do for our club. Their collective effort before and during the season was just sensational. Our key aims for training pre season and for the regular season were as follows - Accelerate the development of existing talent (predominantly 15-23yo) - Integrate junior players into senior ranks more effectively. - Pre season & season proper training to be purposeful and efficient. - Develop & implement simple, effective training drills, specific to batting bowling & fielding - Ask ourselves who we are? Two Blues, One Club, Respect it - Win early games (momentum). - Make T20 Finals - 1sts & 2nds make finals. - Finish 6 th on club championship Two Blues, One Club, Respect it! Early in the season we had a team building session led by new member Andy Knott, (formerly of the NEAFL) where we asked ourselves who we are as a club, how others may perceive us and how we would like to be perceived. The session provided a great forum for players young and old to contribute their thoughts and opinions. The result of the session was Two Blues, One Club, Respect it I think we all agree it s a great catch cry. Season 2016/17 was a great team effort. There were some outstanding contributions both on and off the field. I would like to pay tribute to a number of individuals who I believe were outstanding in their service to NCCC during season 2016/17. We decided at the end of 2015/16 we needed to develop a fresh team culture within the first X1. George Chisholm, Tim Hosking, Will Simson & Nick McGuane were identified as being able to be the core of the First X1 for the next 5-10 years. Cooper Bingham came on board in the winter and added to the mix. The growth of these young men during 2016/17 both on and off the field was enormous. They helped create a fantastic team culture within the First X1, at training and generally around the club. Cricket is enjoyable with these guys and that attracts players to our club & also helps to retain them season on season. Shane mentioned to me that he couldn t remember playing in a team were everybody got along so well. A lot of that credit goes to those guys, but when you throw in personalities like Jacko, Harry & Nick Waldie and the wise & considerate head of Shiv you have a dynamic group that has fun and wants to see his teammate succeed. N e w t o w n &Ch i l w e l l C C A n n u a l R e p o r t /17 Page 11

The challenge to them is to continue to improve. They have further growth left in them yet and I have full confidence in those lads. The appointment of Shane Franklin as NCCC First X1 captain for season 2016/17 was an inspired decision. Shane s CV as a top grade cricketer is extensive both in Australia and the UK. He fell on our doorstep a few years ago (thanks Goose) and we quickly realized he was a serious cricketer and a great fella with a lot to offer the club both on and off the field. As captain, Shane proved to have the perfect personality to get the most out of the developing group. His calm & concise style allowed for a relaxed environment in the rooms. The players responded to that and the culture was allowed to develop. All with the knowledge that sound advice and guidance was there exactly when you needed it. His management of individuals and cricket nous put us in positions to win in almost every game this season. His captaincy was strong, considered and effective. His presence amongst the team was one of mutual respect and belief. The team was 100% behind him on all occasions. Shane worked extremely well with Shiv and Jordan to provide the team with a leadership trio of quiet achievers who just went about their business calmly, methodically and thoughtfully. They are all fierce competitors on the field and provide great example to those around them. It would be great to get that trio together again for 2017/18. Why would you change such a good thing? Yves Roussety was just monstrous this year. To see such a great and loyal clubman take on the new role of NCCC Training & Performance Coordinator with such ease, efficiency, enthusiasm and excellence was one of the most personally enjoyable aspects of the season 2017/18. His own cricket benefitted and I could just see the joy this bloke had playing this year. It was his first 1stXI final and I so wanted us to win for him. Shiv will continue to evolve as a leader within our club as the years progress. He is just so perfect for his role and we are fortunate to have this great fella doing the job. Shiv is going to be a Dad this year. We wish you and Tiff all the best mate. Rod Kiddle is a club legend at NCCC. To have such a decorated player and coach to captain our inexperienced and developing 2ndX1 this year was invaluable to the club and the visions we had for this season. We need to all appreciate how much he has contributed to the development of our young turf players, especially when we were under pressure to win early games last year. It s not easy managing young personalities and the accompanying expectations, so for you to do it with the class, composure and consideration that you do Rocket, is greatly appreciated. Rocket has just started a new, exciting and challenging job after spending 24 years at Geelong Council. Good luck Rocket. Your continued presence at our club Phillip Twaddle is one of my childhood heroes. He used to coach me as a junior and looked after me as a little tacker. Legend has it that I was the cause of his departure at the club in the 80s when I found a bra in the back of his Panel van aged 13yo and was waving it around. If this is true Sehwag, I do publicly apologize to you and all NCCC members for depriving the club of you for so many years. N e w t o w n &Ch i l w e l l C C A n n u a l R e p o r t /17 Page 12

It s not the reason he s bowling coach though, because he was a superb fast medium bowler in NCCC 1 st X1 premierships in the eighties. An experienced coach and captain in his own right, he provides great technical and preparatory advice for our young bowlers. His cricket nous is valuable to our club and it s just great having such a club legend involved with our developing list. I know the players enjoy working with Twads. Adam Kalz was a selfless, consistent, reliable contributor to training this year, assisting the players with warmup, fielding, fitness & games activities. Thanks Kalzy! Russ Mitchell got roasted this year and it was highlighted to us what a fantastic, unique and iconic contribution Russell has made to the NCCC. He has developed real compassion towards the junior and developing players within our club and his influence on us all is great. The fact Sam is playing has reinvigorated the old Battle Hawk and he continues to marshall the troops on each Saturday in summer. His captaincy is often dynamic and exciting. He is a passionate NCCC player. Russell provides me with a sometimes oblique opinion on current cricket matters but his counsel is mostly sound. He can sometimes be hard to predict, but that is the beauty of Russell Mitchell. Mario Gregorio s speech at Russ roast perfectly depicted the young Russell, but today s version is a wise and experienced man who loves his beautiful family, feels satisfied with his existence, loves his club and having a laugh with his teammates. To see him like that just highlights to me what a great organization the NCCC is and what a profound influence it can have in ensuring we live a safe, happy and prosperous life. Adrian Windt- U/17 Premiership Coach and Captain of the 4thXI. Another bloke who is revered in Victorian cricket having played and coached in first grade competitions in Geelong, Warrnambool & Mount Martha. His career experience and cricketing skills in general are elite. Adrian s management and guidance of the U/17 boys was outstanding. The premiership was an appropriate reward for all the care and consideration he gave those boys. Congratulations Windty. Adrian sacrificed his own game to an extent by agreeing to captain the 4ths. He could probably be still playing 2s or 3rds! He continued his great leadership in the afternoon as 4ths Captain and gave great opportunity to the young developing players. We are indebted to him for providing his whole Saturday (& training nights!) in the service of NCCC. Anthony Jefferies Not really sure how we are going to go without this fella involved next season. It s frightening actually. It will take 4 maybe 5 people to do what this bloke has done for many years. And that doesn t count the GCA junior roles he fulfils. We acknowledge him every presentation night and he was awarded Life membership last year. A true club legend of humble nature, who has been a constant source of progression and development within the NCCC for a considerable amount of time (and a pretty handy player in his time as well mind you). 16 Brendan Twaddle A truly herculean contribution to the club from BJ this season. From organizing merchandise, coaching U/17s & U/17 T20 to running the Milo program whilst doing a multitude of things at senior training, BJ was everywhere this year. A true Two Blue Warrior is Brendon. Damian Shanahan s contribution has been outstanding in both his direct coaching of players during pre season & season proper, but his guidance to us on training and playing strategies. Damian has also provided us with a great link to Geelong Grammar and a group of their promising schoolboy cricketers. We are truly fortunate to have Damien involved in our club and to be able to tap into his knowledge and experience is invaluable to the NCCC. Thanks to the Neville Crane for his continued excellence in running the club s 6 th X1. This is a magnificent team for the both the young and old. It s a great vehicle for fathers and sons and displays the true spirit of community cricket. Thanks to Club Legend Anthony Specs Devlin for running the 5 th X1 again and providing developing juniors and young players the opportunity to improve their game. NCCC employed a professional cricketer in 2016/17, Jordan Clark from Lancashire Cricket Club in the UK. Jordan was a popular addition to our First X1 and he excelled with both bat & ball, during the season, culminating in Jordan winning the prestigious GCA Jack Sing medal for the Best Player for season 2016/17. Jordan also won our Merriman medal as well as the Vin Hassett and Greg Wells medals. Clean sweep basically. Not only was he an outstanding performer on the field, Jordan was a model club member, who contributed at training, with match preparation, on game day within the group, with juniors and non-playing members alike. Jordan also contributed quite significantly from a social perspective and some great nights were had at the Queens Park Sporting Complex with Jordan. We know he enjoyed his time with us and we as a club should be proud of how we welcomed and accommodated Jordan and Ellie. I d like to thank Dad (Donald Norman Royce OAM) for having Jordan and Ellie in his home this season gone. It was initially going to be a short-term stay, but Don & Jordan hit it off. It was obviously a tough time within our family with the sad loss of Mum in July. Having Jordan at Dad s proved to be a welcome distraction. I have expressed to Jordan how thankful as a family that we are for the respect, consideration and patience he displayed during his stay with Don. We all have no doubt that he copped a couple of severe ear bashings from Dad during that period. To his credit, he did actually listened on a number of occasions and actually enjoyed Dad s take on our world. Good friends were made. I am very fortunate to be able to tap into the font of knowledge and experience that Don possess with regard to cricket and cricket administration/ organization. Dad is a great source of guidance and advice for me and for that I am very grateful. N e w t o w n &Ch i l w e l l C C A n n u a l R e p o r t /17 Page 14

Most of you know I ve been involved at our club for virtually my whole life. Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club has been a great source of fun, happiness, camaraderie, successes and failures for me over the course of my life. This is a report about the season just gone, but I know that quite a few people who we wish to thank will read this. The generosity, warmth, love and consideration afforded to our family from so many members of NCCC on the passing of Mum was overwhelming. We thank you from the bottom of our heart for being there for us. New senior players for 2016/17 Cooper Bingham, Nick Waldie, Jordan White, Matthew Christison, Andy Knott, Charlie Dahlenburg, Jarred Walter, Henry Alexander, Bailey Melcak, Jordan Clark, Nick Sanders, Mark Sanders, Willem Sanders, Steve Bennett, James Agar, Toby Payne and George Vincent. Congratulations to the U/17 Premiership team. You ve created memories for a lifetime boys. Hayden Jefferies, Charlie Windt, Jack Royce, Oscar Hill, Nick Sanders, Jonty Lawson, Patrick Silo, Jye Witham, Luke Rundle, Levi Julius Irving, Harry Mohr, Tom Keast, Harry Yates. Coached by Adrian Windt and Tony Jefferies. This team is a representation of the club s future and we sincerely hope they all continue to play senior cricket on their graduation and for many years to come. We all know what an outstanding bunch these young men are and we should continue to get around them by including, encouraging and empowering them whenever we can. Congratulations to the U/13 Friday night team on their premiership win. A very promising group of young cricketers, who we should keep an eye out for next year! Congratulations to all average winners, captain s award winners and major award winners for season 2016/17. Recruiting is a now a year round activity. It s not only about finding players who can make runs & take wickets, it s about recruiting good people who will buy into the development & progression of NCCC. It is up to all members to actively identify these people & put them forward for consideration. We are getting better at this & I thank those members who are embracing this important philosophy and contacting me with prospective recruits. We are talking to a number of prospective recruits and announcements will be made in due course on the leadership structure for season 2017/18. During the 2016/17 pre-season, we laid a solid base with regard to our training methods. It is up to the coaches and players to further build on that in 2017/18 by constantly looking for more efficient and effective ways to train ourselves, both individually and as a club. We need to continue to foster an attitude of progression amongst all players with regard to training. Please ensure you get involved early on with pre season. Be honest with yourself, identify your weaknesses in technique & application & then work with coaches & your teammates at training to improve them. Improvement is an enjoyable thing, both personally, as a team and as a club. N e w t o w n &Ch i l w e l l C C A n n u a l R e p o r t /17 Page 15

FIRST XI CAPTAIN S REPORT by Shane FRANKLIN Season 2016/17 was a very promising season for the 1 st XI which saw us exceeded the expectations of many. The new coaching structure implemented by Devon Royce and Frank Tuskes in the off season enabled training to become more specific and it enabled our players to grow and build confidence early in the season. I would like to thank Yves Roussety, Rod Kiddle, Phil Twaddle, Brendan Twaddle and Adam Kalz for their efforts during the pre-season and throughout the campaign. By spreading the workload, I felt that training remained fresh and relevant to the needs of the playing group. As a team this season, we improved significantly with the bat collectively making 2274 runs compared to 1769 runs in 2015/16. We had 5 players score more than 200 runs compared to just 3 last season. I would like to acknowledge the batting efforts of George Chisholm, Jordan Clark, Will Simson, Roussety and Tim Hosking who all made significant contributions throughout the year. This season was a breakout year for several batsmen and they should take the confidence that they have gained and aim to become elite batsmen in the GCA. Our bowling group continued to develop into one of the most promising attacks in the competition. Led by Jordan Clark we took 115 wickets compared to 89 in 2015/16. Only North Geelong took more wickets. I really enjoyed watching the development of Nick McGuane and Jackson Davis and I look forward to watching them lead the bowling attack in the future. The quicks were well supported by George Chisholm and his economical off spin. George s all-round efforts during the season placed him in the Top 10 players in the competition. As we are all aware, we were lucky enough to secure the services of Jordan Clark for the season. Jordan s talent is unquestionable and he proved that with both bat and ball throughout the season. What I enjoyed most about Jordan was the way he seamlessly integrated into the club and his willingness to participate and mentor our emerging talent. He is a great man and I hope the club can sort out his return in the future. The commitment shown by the entire 1 st XI squad during the season was outstanding and the vibe around the team was refreshing. It is important that we keep the team together and support them as they try to create their own legacy. It was a privilege to captain such an impressive group of young men and I look forward to watching them achieve great things for the club in the future. 20 Captain s Award Yves Roussety is a bloke who I describe as the ultimate club man. He was given the responsibility this season to run pre-season and regular season training and his contribution to the development of this club has been nothing short of outstanding. Not only did he contribute at training but this season he played a key role in helping develop a very talented group of young cricketers while also managing to play a key role in getting us over the line on a couple of occasions. Yves isn t the loudest bloke going around but he epitomises the culture that we are trying to develop at the club. Two Blues, One Club, Respect It. Enjoyment, Commitment, Discipline. 21 SECOND XI CAPTAIN S REPORT by Rod KIDDLE Well, what an interesting season that was. The good news is, is the Club has come a long way in the past three seasons due to a lot of hard work. This work done by a lot of people over those three seasons is the reason why NCCC has been such a strong club in the Geelong Region for a long period of time. To look back at year one of those three seasons and to lose 10 players out of 11 first X1 players, and to be playing finals again in that short period of time shows the quality of work that has been done. For me, it was very rewarding to see the first X1 run out in the first final and I then knew we were back where we belonged. That is also why I have huge respect for George Chisholm for being a big part of that rebuild. It was great to see him do well last season personally and see the rewards out on the field. Being Captain of the 2 nd XI this season past was also a very rewarding experience. You see players that are ready to set-themselves up to play firsts, you see young blokes coming in & you see players that just need to be pointed in the right direction. We had 26 players go through the 2nd X1 which was very difficult to set-up from week to week but the players adapted the best they could. One thing I must say about the players is sometimes we had to play players out of position but they all put their hands up and fought hard. I was proud of that. I m sure Adam Kalz as the previous Captain experienced this the year before as well. I think the team was growing and the feeling around the group was turning into believing in themselves and believing they could win from any circumstance. We still had lapses but they didn t play on our minds as they once did and we moved on quickly and looked forward to the next challenge. I saw some players begin to influence games, just to name a few Dom of course, Rhys Bennett, Sam Mitchell, Sam Jefferies the two Jordy s and others. All of the players had their moments of influence as was shown from the awards night and our win, loss ratio improvement. I think the side has now enough experience to give the finals a real shake next season again, and one of the traits I was instilling in the boys, was the fighting to the last ball and that never give up attitude. I would say the sides that win are the ones that fight the hardest for the longest. I d like to thank Frank and Dev (they have been massive) and the Committee, as were the previous leaders, also the On-field leaders in Shane & Yves, prefect people for the job, and a job really well done. I d also I d like to mention Carso for helping setting the foundations as well and all that set-up a day s cricket for all the players. Now it s time to recruit and keep flourishing. For me, I ll be stepping down as 2nd XI Captain and batting coach next season, just to recharge the batteries and also get some fresh faces in there. Onwards and upwards to everyone. 23 THIRD XI CAPTAIN S REPORT by Russell MITCHELL The Thirds had a disappointing year not making the finals for the first time in 4 years. Our batting was below par with no player making 200 runs or more for the year. Our bowling and fielding was excellent all year and we won a few games with very low totals. Michael Kirkland was the stand out player in the thirds this year with both bat and ball and duly won the captains award. As per usual in the 3rds we played many kids and it was great to see Jack Royce, Charlie Windt and Nick Sanders play good cricket at times during the year. Lets hope as a club all our young players take the next step and convert potential into more runs and wickets in season 2017/18. On a personal note I would like to thank Dev for all the work he did as chairman of selectors and to Frank s wife Daniella for afternoon teas. That is one tough job and hopefully next year we don t leave it up to an individual family. Also I would like to congratulate Red on an outstanding job as president and guiding our club forward with a 6 th finish on the club championship and thus avoiding relegation. 24 FOURTH XI CAPTAIN S REPORT by Adrian WINDT The Fourth Eleven focused on development and exposure for the club's young cricketers this season. Supported by the experienced Steve Lewis, Grant Whiteside and Sam Callow, the rookies were given plenty of opportunities to show and develop their wares. We did manage to enjoy a number of victories but battled against the stronger sides which was not unexpected. Over the last few seasons, our junior players have begun to embrace participation in senior cricket and the GCA Fourths standard gives a smooth transition. Patrick Silo, Jye Witham, Levi Irving, Jonty Lawson, Tom Keast, Charlie Windt, Owen Agius-Ikin, Charlie Mitchell and Luke Rundle to name a few, are all better for the experience. I trust and hope that these guys and others can take their cricket up a notch or two next year and have real impacts on the results of games. Although stand-out performances were hard to come by, Michael Kirkland produced one of the great spells of the season bowling 28 overs unchanged and taking 5 wickets against Murgheboluc, gaining new respect as a young cricketer that has so much to offer our club in the future. When asked by the captain "how he was travelling" on more than one occasion, through gritted teeth he stated he felt fine and pushed on leading us to a fine victory. Sam Callow also staked his claim for recognition with his 23 overs against Grovedale claiming 5 wickets and rewarding his preferred physio with a few consultations. For his assistance and example to his team mates over the season, Sam duly earned the Captain's Award. I'd like to thank in particular Steve Lewis, who took over the reins when I was not able to play Fourths. As most around the club know, Lewie has a fantastic record of club performances, is well respected and is a very capable tutor to our young brigade in the heat of the battle. 25 FIFTH XI CAPTAIN S REPORT (playing in GCA 6ths) by Anthony DEVLIN The 5ths this season played 37 (same as in 2015/16) different players throughout the year and improved to win 6 of the 18 games (plus one washed out draw), with those wins being great to enjoy as a team. Only 5 players played 12 games or more and this at times did not support having stability in the team. Caleb McGrath being the only on to play in all with 18 matches. This is a further reason why we enjoyed the year so much as we always looked to have fun first and then hopefully we be as competitive as possible, albeit at times the ability of other teams was very strong. On the downside we came up against some poorly organized and even more poorly behaved teams during the season which detracted from player enjoyment. It is hope the GCA will listen to our club feedback and look to correct such opposition behavior. Several major highlights for the year included: Craig Green s batting all year making and winning the batting average and outdo his fine efforts of 2015/16. Adam Patching provided great back up with the bat as did Tim Sanderson and Adam Woollett with his new bat! Tim Sanderson showed off his all round skills winning the bowling average with 24 wickets at Caleb McGrath s continued development with his bowling with 20 wickets for the season was a great highlight. It was also great to see the Sanderson Family (Tim, Scott and Les) take the field together again as a family. In general, the sight of seeing so many younger players improve so much with their cricket in what was a very strong competition Final special mentions to Adam Mule Woollett (Captain s award), who we all enjoy playing cricket with and always had a smile on his face regardless of the result and the joy on his face as he made runs with his new bat in the latter part of the season. A great support for me and thanks Mule. To captain an NCCC side is always a privilege so thanks to the club for that opportunity. Go the Two Blues! 27 SIXTH XI CAPTAIN S REPORT (playing in GCA 7ths) by Neville CRANE This was the club s second season of the father/son concept. It was also a continuation of playing our juniors in a senior game without the more stressful pressure of club championship cricket. This is proving to be a successful way of transitioning both our juniors and their fathers into senior cricket. We also continued to use the Over 60 s as top up players and the rapport developed between all groups was outstanding. It should be recorded for posterity sake that on January (when all our fathers and sons were on school holidays) our winning side against Waurn Ponds at the Deakin University Lakeside Oval was comprised of 6 players over age 60 with an average age of 68, 1 50 year old, 2-40 year olds and two Under 17 s. This would have had to have been the club s oldest winning side in our club s history. We had 44 different players during the season. Similar to last season selection was basically in priority order with the following category of players: Fathers of current junior players and their sons (18) Other current junior players (7) Fathers of ex junior players and their sons (4) Other senior players (2) Veteran Over 60 s players (13) N.B. Special Guest from USA (also a father above) (1) Only 2 players played 10 or more games and only 4 players played 7 or more games. Seven (7) of our players played games in the 5 th XI, and fourteen (14) of our players played games in the 4 th XI. We won 4 of the 15 games that we played. Four (4) other games during the season were lost due to weather (1) and forfeits (3). Special mentions can be given: to our new recruits our Other Senior Players Stephen Bennett and James Agar who bought both fellowship and valuable playing skills to our side. Thanks to Mark Sanders and Ben Mitchell who captained the team when I wasn t playing and who were always available to assist with the everyday tasks of running the team. Congratulations to Tom Keast who won the Captain s Award. Tom is a natural sportsperson who will continue to improve his game as he has an excellent attitude to his sport.
