1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating 107 years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club March 13, 2018 Vol. 45 No 13 Two Blues, One Club, Respect It Five out of six isn t bad by Warwick Hadfield Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club, playing against Geelong City, finished the season the way it hopes to start the next, winning all four club championships matches. The First Xl, powered by halfcenturies to George Elegant Chisholm and Yves Roussety, and an almost half-century to John Simson, rattled up 294 on day one. On day two Nick McGuane put the Sharks on the defensive from the second ball, having Richie Oliver caught behind. Thereafter Barry, feeling the hot breath of Caleb McGrath in the race to be the club s top wicket-taker, worked his way through the City batting to finish with another Michelle for the season, with good support from Harry, Wink and Jacko, and at the death, Chissa, who held one of the most elegant c&b s ever. Check the video for confirmation. es/videos/ / Though there were plenty of challengers, Chisa might have owned the best one-liner of the day. As the Carlton and United Clydesdales clopped along Richmond Crescent Chisa called out drinks in an over, over here! The First Xl ended the season in fifth spot and with the record for most runs scored by any team They also conceded fewer runs than two of the teams in the top four. These stats confirm a season of continuous improvement but with more work to be done. In the Seconds, Kalzie went beresque, as Dorrie Evans used to say in Number 96 (younger folk check with your grandparents), 14 fours and one six in a match-turning 92 that on top of Jordie s half century and Paddy Silo s handy 23, heaved the score to a potentially defendable 203. Potential was fulfilled on day two, Jordie taking 4-21 from a curmudgeonly 20 overs. To the Third Xl where club legend Rod Kiddle scored 101 not out, 15 fours, three sixes, as Windtie s lot chased down 256 for the loss of five wickets. Rocket was well supported by Matt Dowling s career best 77, the pair putting on 159 in a partnership that had people buzzing all around the grounds as anticipation grew of a whitewash. Of course, it must never be forgotten that the victory was set up by an episode of Tanking the week before, Z Stokes, the fabled hat-trick. It s a great club Stokesie. On behalf of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club s Hat-Trick Club s president, Graeme Chisholm: Welcome! After another club legend, Russell Mitchell, saved the Fourth Xl on day one with a battling 72, Michael Kirkland produced the brilliant bowling performance on day two. As City closed in on the Two Blues 118, Kirkie up-rooted the stumps to finish with 5-29 from 19 overs. The team we call the Fifth Xl beat City via a forfeit and is now into the semi-finals. Get around them as they take on Leopold at Estuary Boulevard this Saturday. The Sixth Xl took on top of the ladder Grovedale, dropped catches, sitters according to Mule, four of em at least, and paid the penalty. As well as the Fifth s needing your support, so does the club as we host GCA First Division, First Xl finals. Don t wait to be asked, see your captain, or David Barnes, to volunteer. There are plenty of jobs that will need to be done as we build even further on Queens Park s now official (see Geelong Advertiser, March the 8 th ) as the number one cricket venue in Geelong.

2 GCA final to be live-streamed on facebook The Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club congratulates the GCA on its innovative move to live-stream the First Division, First Xl final from Queens Park. Wes Cusworth has brought a breath of fresh air to the GCA media and communications this summer, said club president, Frank Tuskes. We are very supportive of his latest move. It will be a great showcase for our club, our ground, our sponsors, and in general for the game of cricket. In an increasingly difficult and crowded market, cricket needs to be nimble and innovative to fight off the challenges from other sports, particularly as people become more time poor. NCCC sponsors will be featured throughout the live telecast of all four sessions on both days. With the population of Geelong and the Surf Coast now nudging 250,000, Wes Cusworth believes the GCA First Xl final will attract a much larger Facebook audience. Our club is a great believer that sponsorship is a two-way street, Frank Tuskes said. Our sponsors will benefit enormously from the extra exposure that livestreaming will give to the final. A T20 final broadcast in Shepparton, population 50,000, attracted 12,000 hits earlier this year. Thank you Clare for 8 years of feeding us. All the very best from the Two Blues! Presentation night is Friday, March 23 from 7:30pm. No entry cost, some finger food provided. Jan Planwell Financial Services Corporate affairs advice and services HG Legal Services
