1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Inc. TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club Inc. March 5, 2008 Vol.35 No.12 Be there! Congratulations to the Thirds and Fourths on making their finals. It's very important that the rest of us get along and support Col, Frankie and the rest of their boys this weekend, particularly if you are a turf player. The honour of wearing creams and sprigs also comes with responsibilities. It's no so much commiserations to the other sides not playing finals, but a hearty well done for persevering through what, at the start, could have turned out to be a disastrous summer of plagues, pestilences and drought. Without the superstars of last summer, the First XI under Fleetie and Clarkie still managed to finish better than second last, the only real goal that was set for them. Everything else was to be a bonus. There have been plenty. Promising youngster Devon Royce finished off the season in scintillating form. And before you all starting screaming "promising youngster, you're kidding!" he's the same age as the bloke about to make his Test debut, Bryce McGain. And probably better looking too, if only by a close shave. All year, as the Twos resembled a creche as much as a cricket team - there were as many nappy changes as bowling changes - Damien O'Loughlin met all the challenges with a steadfast smile. Well done Lochos! And Gags getting wickets in the final game, now there's something to savour. Well done R. Bennett on joining that horrible club, out in the 90s, no free beer! Well done, too, the cockroach for making a half-century on grass. You should have been smoking it all season! After a bit of a pounding the previous week against St Peters, the 5ths showed Newtown Two Blue grit on day two, bowling and catching well, especially the Slade Stanley screamer, then displaying a bit of spine with the bat. Apparently some old bloke with now just one game left in his ailing body managed to scrape together enough runs to join the 1000 runs/100 wickets club. Specs in the 300 games club, Morgo in the 6000 runs club, it hasn't been all that bad a year at all. In the 6ths, another even more important land mark, one the club can really celebrate and take joy in - David and Josh Barnes playing together. As anyone knows who has got to play with their son or sons, whether in one game, or a premiership, it is a mighty special thing. And for Barnso, this great, untiring servant of N&CCC, it must have been right up there in Bruce McAvaney territory as spppppeccccccial. Well done Mark Turnley for providing all these opportunities for the new generations of Newtown players. We're not sure whether congratulations are in order for Donna Sheahan, winner of the Platypus Award. Thanks should go though to the Sheahans, and big Ange, for helping Jaikie get all his gear back home after Emirates or someone else cocked up his baggage allowance. An interesting experience, having our Pom, but a rewarding one. Because N&CCC is the club it is, we didn't get a hack from Harwich or a no-hoper from Northampton; we got a county player, and one with a bright future in front of him, both there and in Australia it seems:) By the time this thing s all over, Donna is going to know enough about getting people and stuff back and forth from England to become a travel agent so long as you only want to make the trip from Lovely Banks to lovely Bungay. At the start of the season, there were some things we wanted to do on and off the field, and some things we wanted to avoid. With the finals featuring the Fourths and the Thirds still to be played, we have managed to achieve a lot of our goals, while some are so close you can taste them. We have gone from survival to - if people do the right thing next summer, or next winter, actually, when pre-season starts - the potential for a great revival. It starts this weekend at the Thirds and Fourths - be there.

2 The Platypus This year s Platypus was a close run race with the eventual winner Donna Sheahan winning by a single vote from Fourths XI skipper Frank Tuskes who polled strongly due mainly to his antics on the field. In my belief this award recognizes outstanding efforts on the behalf of superior clubman in a humorous manner, past winners include a cacophony of past presidents and life members (yes cacophony is the correct collective noun for this group). This years recipient is a tremendously club orientated person, two kids and a husband playing with the club and her daughter an ardent supporter of the First XI. Donna is the type of person we love to have around the club, fun and vibrant prepared to roll her sleeves up and work around the club but most importantly a joy to be around. Donna is in fact the first woman to win this award but am sure with her mate Julie Del Rio around the club will not be the last. Congratulations to all social Award winners. Now the real stuff starts lets get along and support the sides representing this great club in finals action. Grant Whiteside took his 300 th catch and his 50 th stumping with the Club in round 9 (Jan 12, 2008) against Manifold Heights Mark Turnley opened the batting and remained 56 not out in the 6th XI s total of 134 all out against Geelong City on 19/01/08. However, he did not carry his bat as under competition rules he had to retire at 50 runs but was later able to resume his innings. Coincidently it was his 50 th birthday. The Fourth XI defeated Torquay outright without losing a wicket in round 12 (Feb, 2008). Torquay 104 and 105 lost the N&CCC 0/149 declared (in 16 overs, Paul Sheahan 108 not out) and 0/72. NEVER. Day 1 we won the toss and batted with a very firm resolve amongst the group that we would bat the 55 overs out and put the game beyond the boys from up the hill. After the initial set back of losing our in form player "the rat" for a duck and us being 1/6 in the 3rd over George Chis and Hatchy settled down and played some very bright and entertaining cricket that saw us through to 1/80 in the 22nd over. For reasons unknown to this author a suicidal single was attempted with the result being George (38) caught short of his ground by 8 metres. From that point on the innings folded like a pack of cards and we were all out for 136 in the 39th over. Hatchy 34 and Cammo 19 were the only other 2 batsmen to show any fight at all.i will never use bad decisions as an excuse for getting beaten but it did appear to this scribe that Hugo and Tommy Gee should probably have been given the benefit of the doubt in their decisions as the laws of cricket dictate. What looked like being a score of in excess of 200 at one stage turned out to be our most feeble performance of the season so far.still we had runs on the board and they had to get them. Jamie and Hugo opened the bowling and had the Joeys openers hopping all over the place.our enthusiasm in the field was taking its toll on the batters and when the Rat came in to bowl a couple of overs at the end of the day we grabbed a couple of wickets to get us back in the game.2/29 at stumps. Day 2 and we had the job in front of us. Line and length bowling was what I asked for and that is what was delivered. Eddy and Tom Chis started the day with 5 maidens in the 1st 6 overs and the pressure was mounting on The Holy Ones. Tom snared a caught and bowled and we had them 3/40.We needed to start taking wickets consistently but whilst we were maintaining the pressure we couldn't grab wickets when we needed them. Jamie, Huggy and George Chis all bowled tightly but wickets eluded us. Snicks and edges into gaps were the norm for tha batsmen who seemed to be getting a little help from someone up above. Eddy came back on for his 3rd spell and chimed in beautifully with another 2 wickets and at 5/82 we are back in the game big time. Once again we struck a lull and that next important wicket just wouldn't fall. Jamie reappeared at the bowling crease and put the fear of God into the Joeys no 8 finally removing him at 6/111.When Jamie snatched a blinder at 1st slip of Tom Chis and the skipper got one through their no 10 we had them 8/133 and needing 4 to win.four byes from a leg side full toss sealed the deal for Joeys and they had recorded a very hard fought victory. There was a lot to like about our efforts in the field today.excellent bowling backed up by at the most times good fielding ensured that we made them fight all the way for a win. We had batted 39 overs for our 136 yet we had made them labour through 64 overs before they passed our score. As I often tell my players if you can bat your allocated overs in junior cricket it is not very often you lose. George Chisholm 38 11/5/1/18 Eddy Ratcliffe 0 12/6/4/13 Damien Hatch 34 2/0/0/15 Josh Carr 10 1/0/0/6 George Cameron 19 3/1/0/3 Jamie Harrison 4 12/2/1/31 2 catches Tom Goodear 3 Hugo Steinfort 6 12/4/0/24 Bernie Chomley 5* 1/1/0/0 Tom Chisholm 1 12/3/2/20 1 catch Ted McDonald 0 1/0/0/1 1 catch N&CCC Barnes 9/205 defeated Geelong City 8/186 at Eastern Park #3 Josh Barnes 18 1/9 Patrick Eastman 24 3/25 Harry Andrews 0 0/14 Andrew Wilson 29 0/16 Jack Thackeray 0 2/4 Alex McPherson 0 0/43 Ned Clonan 62no 0/9 Lachlan Simpson 14 DNB Isaac Cato 9 0/27 Andrew Henderson 6 2/19 A great way to end the year with a sensational come-from-behind victory. Losing our seventh toss of eight for the year, we once again found ourselves in the field, Ned and Patrick bowling tight opening spells. Hendo and a fired up Jack followed them up with 2 good wickets each as the home team struggled to break the shackles of an enthusiastic Two Blue outfit, with only a spate of late hitting bringing about a useful score of 186 on the lightning fast Eastern Park #3. Getting the runs was never going to a problem if we could bat our overs out on day two and at 0/53 after nine overs with Easty and Barnso going great guns things looked well on track. Enter City s Barwon Rockets representative player, Tom Driver, to change all that, as five wickets fell in the next seven overs to leave us in all sorts of trouble at 5/56 (as good as 6 down, as we were once again down to just 10 men in this match). Ned got off the mark with a streaky four and from there never look back, he and Andrew seeing off the danger man and taking us to break at 5/88. Just play each ball on its merits was the instruction and to the boys credit they did exactly that, with Andrew digging in while Ned played the shots, their stand reaching 92 in 20 overs before Ned reached his 50 and headed off for a rest.

8 Andrew s great innings ended soon after, 6/148, us still longish odds of pulling it off. Lachlan and Isaac added 26 before Lachlan missed a booming drive and was bowled 7/174. Hendo s well placed edge sped past the keeper to the boundary, one went down the legside and beat the keeper for another four, two or three singles were gleaned and that was it - great cheers from the team as we reached an improbable win, the last two wickets falling to young Tom to give him figures of 6/26 and a well earned pat on the back from all the Newtown boys as we shook hands. A fantastic match to end the season, played in terrific spirit and with all the skills on show, Ned s innings right up with anything achieved over the course of our season. Every match we played was a real contest in what has proven to be a very closely fought division. Some we won, some we lost, but along the way all the boys chipped in and helped out in what was a very enjoyable year. Well done to you all. Thanks to all involved especially Bretto and Jeffers for their efforts at U15 training, as well as Russell Thackeray, Dave McPherson and David Barnes on game day. You blokes make my life easy thanks!
