1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating 102 years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club since December 5, 2012 Vol.40 No.5 A winning theme from Lara The First XI had another satisfying win, this time against Lara out there. Batting first things look a bit problematic at 3 29 before Ibbsie, Jonathan (that s what his Mum calls him) Carpenter and Jack Wood (back to back 90's with a stellar 91 n/o) put things right, with some good help from James Bottomley and Yves Rousetty. Then it was Jonno (that s one of the things we call him) and Chip who produced the marathon & brave spells on day two to set up a solid win. Great team effort with Harro "strung" out early in the day...!! In the twos, it was mountain claiming instead of marathons, both sides making more than 300 with Rhys making a debut 2's ton and both Batesy & Russ getting amongst the runs. Lara got home on the final ball of the 85th over, much to the chagrin of Rusty. The thirds built their win on an even performance with both bat and ball across the two days, Hayden Down taking his 100 th wicket for the club and Twadds making impact with bat & ball. Special notes for Chris Byrne snagging two fa to wrap up the match watch this space for this young fella. In the fourths, Grant's boys even having multiple team changes, with Ian Hastie getting four wickets on the way to a tidy win on day two, even batting, including Patchie s halfcentury and Dan Grose getting 40+, the hallmark of day one. Top spot on the ladder and everyone is chasing the reigning premiers. The fifths and Navy both suffered losses, but Spec s Cambridge outfit gave us one more victory over Lara Nathan Clark and Tommy Levick both getting Michelles and Tom celebrating his first bag of five for the club...!!. The club sits in fourth spot in the club championships, with the Firsts fifth. Two more important games to come before the break with Highton and then North Geelong in a one dayer that both games loom as critical to ensure we keep moving forwards... As Christmas approaches, this is the time to push even harder. Go the Two Blues...!!! Christmas Party Saturday 15 December, 2012 (Due to Riley Ferguson's 18th on the following Saturday,!!) 3 Wood stokes fire Mark Browning November 30th, 2012 JACK Wood is a major part of the brigade of blossoming young talent that is turning Newtown & Chilwell back into a GCA Division One force. The 20-year-old batsman has compiled back-to-back 90s in his past two hits. He has taken a hold on the No.6 position at the Two Blues and has provided his side with the middle order stability it needs as it pushes its way up the ladder. His scores of 98 against South Barwon and 91 not out against Lara were made under different match situations, but there is no doubt both were against quality opposition. South Barwon is second, while Lara is fifth, one place above Newtown & Chilwell. Wood has had some good periods of run making before. But despite a couple of previous half centuries this is his best scoring in GCA Division One. "I made a century and a ninety in consecutive innings for Geelong College," Wood said. "But I have had my periods of low scores, too. I have had some good coaching from Mick Wood at Newtown and at the start of my innings I have been facing a lot of balls without trying to score quickly: batting slower. "I have opened a bit and batted No.3 at school. Our coach Bryan Thomas suggested I go down the order and I don't mind going in at No.6." Wood is a product of the strong cricketing nursery at Geelong College, where Greg Hansen guided a lot of talented youngsters now making an impact in the GCA, at Geelong and in representative teams. Wood and several of his Newtown & Chilwell teammates played in the recently successful Under 21 Barwon Rockets side. He has retained his connection with his old school as coach of the year 7 side on Saturday mornings and it has clearly not affected his form. "I coach in the morning then go and play," Wood said. "There are a number of ex-college guys in the Newtown team. Several have been my friends for some time. "At the moment we are combining well. It's a tight team where everyone gets along. "It would be very handy if we win at Lara on Saturday. Batting first and getting 275 I think is an advantage, especially if we can get some early wickets." YOUNG GUN: Jack Wood is helping turn Newtown & Chilwell into a GCA 1 force "The first one against South Barwon we were chasing a big score," Wood said. "It was a matter of getting myself in and getting some partnerships established. "Last Saturday at Lara we were 4-57 so John Carpenter and I had to get a good partnership going. There was no need to rush. "I'm not worried about not making it to a hundred. I didn't know I was so close against South Barwon and just made the mistake of taking on Clinton Peake's throwing arm. "Then on Saturday we were eight wickets down at the end and I was just trying to get as many runs as possible."
4 Rockets blast Sharks to take knockout title Mitch Cleary - Geelong Advertiser November 26th, 2012 THE Barwon Rockets claimed their maiden VCCL knockout title in style yesterday, thumping South-East Sharks by 89 runs in Frankston. Newtown & Chilwell all-rounder Dale Denny was the star with 41 and five wickets, and club teammates Jack Wood (41) and Jake Ibbs (40) helped the Rockets to a winning 242. From 3-39, the Two Blue trio took the Rockets to before an unbeaten final-wicket stand from quicks Matt Tarbett (29) and Jamie Harrison (19) added an invaluable 53 runs. "We stuck to our task, turning the strike over and tried not to be selfish," Denny, 19, said. "That last partnership was massive for us." Newtown & Chilwell's Dale Denny. Harrison then took the new ball with Shaun Kingwell and put the clamps on the Sharks. Denny (5-48) and Daniel Weigl (4-43) ensured the Sharks had no room to move as they tried to hit out, removed for 153 in the 44th over. "It was a great batting wicket," Denny said. "We tried to change it up. I bowled cutters and Weigl's offies tied them up and brought a few wickets. "It's been a great tournament, for our cricket as well as our bonding across GCA clubs." After winning their first game in the competition only last season, manager Justin Brown said the win was reward for effort. 12 300 matches On 25 November, for my 60th birthday celebrations which NCCC generously allowed me to hold in the club rooms, we used Pink Saffron, Clare's catering firm. Apart from the brilliant music performed by the reformed Dancing With Socrates (Picture as noted below), and the praise lavished on my new book NEVER SHORT OF A WORD, people also raved about the food. PINK SAFFRON - a review And by the way, NEVER SHORT OF A WORD is available at Paton's Bookshop in Chilwell, just off Pakington Street. It costs $15.00 and it's worth it just to see if you get a mention. - Warwick Hadfield Pink Saffron Catering is a Geelong locally owned and operated catering and event planning business.
