1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating 107 years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club January 30, 2018 Vol. 45 No 10 Two Blues, One Club, Respect It Simmo s ton ensures big win over Joeys by Warwick Hadfield A neat century from John Simson, well supported by elegant innings from Graham Clark and Cooper Bingham, powered the Two Blues to a big away win over fierce rival St Joseph s in round nine. Simson s century continued his immaculate form since returning to the club and made sure, after a wobbly start at the end of day one 4-21 chasing 130 the six points came Newtown and Chilwell s way. Nick McGuane (three), Jackson Davis and Shane Murdoch (two) and Harry Christie and Graham Clark one each were the wicket takers, Ham bowling 17 overs for 17 runs in preparation for returning to Durham as an all-rounder and perhaps even featuring in next year s IPL auction. Remember all your mates at Newtown who turned you into an all-rounder Ham when you get the million-dollar contract. His innings, that began so calmly amid the carnage on day one, re-confirmed that new all-round status on day two, the clever mix of putting away the bad ball in the general direction of the Barwon and finding delicate gaps with the better ones to keep the score advancing. First in partnership with Coops, then Simmo, he rendered mostly impotent the Joey s attack that had threatened so much on day one. The Fourth Xl looked in all sorts after being dismissed for 152 on day one, with Matt Dowling, Sam Callow and Jack Hastie all getting into the 20 s but no further. Come week two, Sam Callow ripped apart the Joey s top order to finish with a Michelle 5-39: leadership of the highest order with bat, ball and in the field. Sam is also a great contributor to the club via his company Danlaid Contracting, who will be next sponsor of the round. The Seconds and Thirds found life a little tougher, the Twos bowled out for 97, Jarad Battenally top-scoring. When Joey s batted, Jorden Lewis bowled 30 overs to take The fight then became to save the outright loss with Lee Welcome to Newtown Murdoch leading the way with 45. John Simson brings up his ton. On day one, Yves Roussety (fast approaching his 100 th First Xl game) and Cooper Bingham, both diving in front of first slip, held two stunning catches to set Joey s back on their heels, a position from which they didn t fully recover until the final overs when they smashed through the Two Blues top order. When Clark departed to everyone s surprise on 63 and after snaring the six points, Simmo continued on in that unruffled way of his, a perfunctory raising of the bat to acknowledge the folk raucously cheering his hundred from St Joey s deck. It wasn t quite the decibel level of the last time there with Ham s big brother playing his first game, but it was loud nevertheless. There was another famous victory among the club championship teams. Despite a presidential 61, the Thirds could only must 119, a score Joeys passed just one wicket down. The Fifths, as we like to call Spec s Xl, had a huge win over East Belmont, against 89, a fine young chap by the name of Steve Lewis making up for his disappointing over 60 s debut with a tidy 42 and a couple of wickets, to help shore up second spot behind Airey s Inlet..continued on page 2
2 .continued from page 1. Field-Marshal Sanders side just fell short against top of the ladder South Barwon amid outstanding performances from the youngsters. In Gus Chapman, Will Sanders, Levi West and the Guida s, Ethan and Noah, the Two Blues have First Xl stars of the future. The club is grateful to senior players like Mark Sanders and Mike Chapman who put so much effort into nurturing these youngsters. Equally impressive is their capacity to listen. And speaking of the Chapmans, what a special day with three generations played in the one team Mike Senior, Mike Junior, and Gus. Mike Senior held a great catch at first slip, Mike Junior batted the house down and young Gus in the field was something special. Past Players Day Feb 3 On Saturday February 3 NCCC invites all Past Players to the annual Past Players day at Queens Park. On that Saturday the 1st XI hosts South Barwon and we look forward to a classic encounter. As such we would like to see as many possible past players join us throughout the afternoon. As a key figure in past club glories have received this in the hope that you will be in a position to rally the troops, spread the message and let people know, particularly those with whom you played in premierships. Notable premiership anniversaries are; Three generations of Chapmans play in the Sixths Mike senior, Mike junior and Angus. There are sometimes more important things than winning. Though lots of wins will be up for discussion at Past Players Day this weekend. Don t miss out on the chance to relive your glory days as premierships are celebrated, sixes clear boundaries by even great margins and dollies became screamers. And that s just Lucas Friend. 1sts 1987/88 30 years 3rds 1967/68 50 years 1997/98 20 years 5ths 1987/88 30 years 6ths 1992/93 25 years u13s 1967/68 50 years Pink Stumps Day Sat Feb 17 th Any donations for auction on pink stumps day will be much appreciated for this great cause and fundraising social afternoon.
