1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating 103 years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club since December 19, 2013 Vol. 41 No 7 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to All As we arrive at the last Saturday of cricket for 2013 before we break for Christmas, it a timely reminder to take stock of where we are at. If we are to be a successful club, it needs to be a combined and united effort from all. This includes setting standards of both performance and behaviours that will provide for the continued growth & development across the grades, and includes all the areas of talent and endeavour. Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club continues on its journey towards that standard of success. The First XI whilst not being to achieve a victory against Highton, provided plenty of good signs from Jake Ibbs, Dale Denny & several others showing that the hard work, persistence and talent are beginning to pay off. Thereafter our club depth was on display in spades. The Seconds celebrated Sam Reidy day with a sublime 153 n/o & a Michelle Pfeiffer and winning outright. Celebrations for the fourths, also with an outright win. Cam Bishop s maiden century and an allaround performance from the Sav with wickets & runs. Pride in performance runs deep in these sides, with both skippers having their teams in the firing line at the top of their respective ladders. Also the Third XI, had a solid first innings win with Kalzy again featuring with the bat and Frank Bali Tuskes getting back in the runs. The Fifths handled the Geelong West footballers with Steve Lewis becoming the second oldest century maker in NCCC history (subject to correction) and Sixths were seeking a record book to be overwritten for a 0/199 all 11 players putting a hand up to be included in the partnership, but alas our statistical doyen has spoken & just a great day at the office. As the last match before Christmas approaches vs North Geelong and we play off for the Charlie Pearce / Dennis Hynes cup, proudly supported by Harveys Of Highton, we pause to celebrate Christmas, we can reflect on some excellent club efforts on and off the field. Riley Ferguson is back playing and just grows as a captain, with thanks to Fossy & Alfy for steering the ship so well in his absence. We have found three new and successful club championship captains in Yves, Twadds and Hick with all sides well amongst the quest for playing deep into March. There is a new sense of purpose about the committee, the minutes taken down in a version of Maygar that most of us can understand. Yes we can still have an opinion and offer advice to all it wouldn't be Newtown if that didn't happen. And yes there are some who don't always get their point across in the scheme of things it wouldn't be Newtown if that didn't happen. But we have put a light on a hill and are we being taken towards it. About 2000 years ago, Three Wise Men saw a light and followed it to a special place in time. Once they arrived, it became aware that it was a special place. The wise men and women of NCCC are following that same path to that special place in time. Enjoy the last game of the season Saturday, come down to Stinton Oval on Sunday for annual double wicket and enjoy a laugh or sausage. Let s all appreciate the time we can spend with our families, friends and loved ones at this time of the year. From all at NCCC, wish everyone a joyous & successful 2014.!!!! MEMBERSHIPS are now due in full unless you have made a prior arrangement with Tom Levick or the Club. 4 Highton topples Newtown in gutsy run chase By MARK BROWNING Geelong Advertiser December 12, 2013 HIGHTON continued to show they are developing into a fine cricket team when they defeated Newtown & Chilwell by four wickets at McDonald Reserve. The Heat made in pursuit of the Blues their biggest successful run chase of the summer. They are now equal on points with sixth placed Lara. "They were both patient and put the bad ball away. Harry's cover driving was a feature. He often hits the shot to the field, but this time it was going through the gaps." The visitors had setbacks. Smith was dropped from a tough chance at point, Foss injured his calf after 10 overs and could not bowl again and as the tension built, spinner Justin Maher was yellow carded by the umpire. Quick singles were the order of the day in Highton's successful run chase against Newtown & Chilwell. Eventually Cam Alford trapped both Smith and Purcell lbw to leave Highton Then experienced pair Kris Gretgrix (39) and Mark Freijah took Highton to the cusp of victory. "Mark was the rock and Kris did the damage," Dodds said. "Kris when he gets going has the ability to keep finding the boundary. We needed 30 off the last five or six overs, but it is hard to defend on our big ground and can be a nightmare to set fields." In the second last over the experienced Freijah straight drove the ball back past the bowler down the ground to clinch Highton's third win of the season. "It was kind of game where a few things were said on the field," Dodds said. "I think at times that makes you more determined to win. So it might have actually helped us." Newtown & Chilwell s Dale Denny tears in. "It was a really good run chase by the boys," said Highton captain, Ben Dodds. "And what was especially pleasing was that we had more contributors to the total. "There is as much confidence at the moment as I have seen at the club because we know now how to turn good positions into a win." As he did against South Barwon, Jacob Smith (96) set up his side's match winning total with a fine innings. This time he failed to reach three figures but the opener guided Highton to a position where they were within striking distance of their target. When Justin Foss (2-24) picked up the first two wickets and Dale Denny trapped Luke Daffy lbw, Highton were 3-84 and Newtown & Chilwell might have believed they were slightly in front in the game. Smith then had a pivotal century partnership with youngster Harry Purcell. Still eligible for juniors, Purcell made 62, his maiden 1st XI half century, putting on 112 for the fourth wicket with Smith. "It was a great partnership," Dodds said. "They played really well. I think it helped Harry having Jacob at the other end with him, too. To get the full features of the NCCC App you need to download Team App onto your smartphone. 5 Barwon Rockets claim second consecutive country title By MEAGAN ROOTH Geelong Advertiser December 15, 2013 BARWON Rockets coach Brad Hauenstein believes at least four of his newly-crowned under- 21 championship players are deserving of Vic country selection. ALL WELCOME to CHRISTMAS DRINKS and CAROLS at the GOLD DIGGERS HOTEL MONDAY 23 rd, DECEMBER at 7pm. The annual event is shaping as another fun night!! The Rockets demolished South East Country Sharks at Marshall today, in what was a replay of last year's country championship grand final. Reaffirming its premier regional position, Barwon bowled the visitors out for 68 before hunting down back-to-back victories in 15 overs. "It was a pretty easy day in the end," Hauenstein said. "We just wanted to play hard and aggressive cricket and for everyone to do their jobs. "It was a very solid performance." South East opted to bat but came under the immediate fire of Barwon quicks James Menzies (2-13) and Jamie Harrison (2-14). GOT HIM: Barwon Rockets' Harrison celebrates his first wicket of the day. N&CCC "Pink Stumps Day" 22 February 2014 at Queens Park - Ladies High Tea to be the highlight (further & specific details to follow) The Sharks were scrambling at 5-20 and were 8-60 after 30 overs. Leg-spinner Dane McFarlane finished with 2-19, while skipper Daniel Weigl and Jack Spence took singles. "We wanted to put the pressure on early and the bowlers just put the ball in the right spot," Hauenstein said. "We dropped three catches so we could have had them out for even cheaper." Spence (16 runs), Dale Denny (35 not-out) and Mitch Jepson (13) finished the job. "We just stayed with our normal batting side," Hauenstein said. "It was a pretty good batting wicket." Newtown and Chilwell inclusion Denny was named player of the match.
