1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating 103 years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club since November 7, 2013 Vol. 41 No 4 FROM GOOD TO GREAT... THE SINGULAR JOURNEY CONTINUES There were some good results over the weekend, but the greatness that N&CCC aspires to is some way off. The Ones and Twos could have fielded and bowled a lot better. To the credit of both sides, they coppered their whack, put the disappointments behind them and produced resolute batting performances - performances that can be nuanced into winning efforts as the delicate points of batsman ship become more ingrained, more second nature. Before, long before in fact, he became Tony Greig's sparring partner on Channel 9, Bill Lawry was a tremendous opening batsman for Australia. When he and his mate Bobby Simpson came up against the fury of Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith, dodging and weaving against thunderbolts way before the days of helmets, they both had a ploy to survive - get down to the non-striker's end. The running of the quick singles became as strategically important to them as the hook off the eyebrows. Even in the days of slap bang wallop cricket thrust upon our sensibilities by modern officials who know the price of everything but the value of nothing, the adeptly taken single remains as important a part of the game of cricket as any other skill. It is fantastic to hear that this is recognised by our leadership group. continued on page 2 President s Dinner 2013/14 Saturday November 30 7pm for 7:30 start with special guest to be announced This is a TICKETED EVENT ONLY you will not be admitted without one! 2 FROM GOOD TO GREAT... THE SINGULAR JOURNEY CONTINUES..continued from page 1 Further down the grades, there were four good wins. In the Thirds, the Brendan Twaddle transmogrification continues - wicketkeeper, wicket-taker, centurymakers. Old man Phil's buttons are busting of his shirt. In the Fourths, Toby Sudweeks' growing fulfilment of a talent recognised long ago is fantastic. Kane Grambeau smashed a fine, but not unexpected given his prodigious abilities, century in the Fifths. And the Sixths are looking more and more like the World Series Sixths with some big names from the club's history making up the number. How fantastic that such a fine club servant as Scott Mullen hangs up his spikes and puts on his rubbers to play quality hard wicket cricket. According to D. Royce OAM's ever reliable abacus, we're going along nicely in the Club Championship. But nicely isn't enough. It isn't greatness. It's only barely good. Greatness requires the things that Jim Collins wrote about in his fabled book, and which a bloke by the name of Brian Cook adopted and adapted at the footy club just up the road from us to turn a leaking, bankrupt organisation with a motley playing list into an AFL powerhouse. Leaking in every sense, too. The roofs had more holes in them than Swiss cheese. And secrets just couldn't be kept. Big-noters within the club would get to the Diggers on Friday night and unwittingly give away all the club's confidences to the forward scouts sent along by the opposition for that very purpose while boasting to their mates about what they knew from within the walls. When Cookie arrived, those big-noters soon departed. That they were barely missed is writ large in the performances of the Geelong Football Club since their departure. Greatness requires many things. High among them is the institution's unity of purpose. There are sacrifices, too, but when you're singing BARRUMPBARUMPBARA, they were worth every single moment, and every single, too.

3 1000 th match - round 11 The Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club has a major milestone to celebrate in round 11 when we play Geelong City OUR 1000 th First XI match! Newtown and Chilwell is the only club to have competed in all 85 playing seasons since the Geelong Cricket Association was reformed in 1928/29. During those years the Club has played a total of 989 games in District Firsts winning 20 First XI premierships from 27 grand final appearances. The great success of the Club can be judged by the fact that the First XI has made the finals in 49 of the 85 seasons. The win/loss record reads as such: WON games (39 outright) = LOST games (23 outright) = DRAWN games TIED - 5 games FORFEIT - 2 games NCCC T20 Games on Sunday 17 November, 2013 Scheduled games are at Leopold Cricket Ground (per below): Game 1 10am NCCC versus Leopold Game 2 1pm NCCC versus Grovedale Game 3 4pm Grovedale versus Leopold

For 10 years he played with Geelong in the VCA as a quality all-rounder. Justin featured in Second and Third Eleven Premierships as well as playing 50 First XI games. Last summer, Justin returned to the GCA to play with Newtown and Chilwell and in his first year, won the bowling average. This summer he is the Two Blues captain and a key part of the leadership group. Justin has a Level 1 Cricket Coaching certificate and is now working towards his Level 2 accreditation. A natural leader and mentor, Justin has also played more than 90 senior games of GFL football with St Josephs and St Marys, where he coached the reserves to the grand final this year. Whether it is cricket or football, Justin is passionate about helping young people get the best out of themselves. To help young cricketers get the best out of themselves, Justin will not only pass on his immense knowledge, but use the latest technology. They will have their batting and bowling filmed, and then analysed. It's amazing how quickly just being able to see what you're doing wrong, and what you're doing right, improves your game. And of course there's that other vital part of being a successful cricketer, mental toughness. Justin knows all about that. Justin Foss Private Cricket Coaching is looking to work with all ages and abilities and will be based at Queens Park. He is available for coaching Monday and Friday nights from 4.30 pm and - by special appointment - on Sunday s. The cost is $45 per hour.
