Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club since. February, Vol. No. Mixed success but plenty to Shore up The last fortnight has been one of mixed success. The Firsts, out-hustled on day two, are now out of finals contention after losing to East Belmont. Well done to John Simson for his halfcentury and Jonathan Carpenter had good all-round performances, runs and two of the three wickets to fall on day two. In the Seconds, Russell Mitchell celebrated day one of his th game for the club with a fighting, those combined efforts bringing him a swag of column inches in the local paper. Not a bad pic, either. Day two though, the bowlers struggled early and it was only Eddie Ratcliffe, bowling what someone described as "Bothamesque poo" who got Newtown back into the game late. One thing young Eddie does have, a part from not having a part in that mop of hair of his, is presence at the bowling crease. And that is as important as consistent line and length. The Thirds were also mown down in a run chase. Alex Pietsch's 8 had been the backbone of their innings on day one, with good support form Sam Eason and Jamie Pescott. Pessie and Darcy Delrio were the only wicket takers on day two, a brace apiece. There was a stout victory for the Fourths, with the stoutest of them all, Ian Hastie, winning the man of the match award. He took three wickets on day one, and then as he is prone to do whenever the opposition is East Belmont, plonked his front foot down the wicket, with the bat immediately adjacent, and said "get past that". They couldn't. He made 8. The Fifths are rolling along nicely, even without the talismanic President. They easily inked in a win against that great repository of ink to our north. Twads Snr topscored and Paul Shakespeare turned in the all-rounder's performances, opening the batting and the bowling with success. Spec's and Marcel's Sixths suffered a loss to Joeys. The opponents didn't linger, or Linga, long over the run chase, that scored passed in 8 overs. Patch and Blissie both scored. Patch also took three of the five wickets to fall. Sans their wounded skipper, Navy turned in their best batting performance of the year. Chasing Lara's, they made -. Yes, that's right, runs scored in a day that stretched into the long shadows. Morgo topscored with, while stand in skipper Cougar made, Stevie Lewis, and Ryan Raybould, who has improved all summer, made. So there it is. Plenty of sides are still well in contention to play finals. The Seconds are second. The Thirds are fourth. The Fourths are second. The Fifths are second. Cambridge sits third in the Sixths competition. Next week will be Jonathan Carpenter's last game for our club. His contribution to season / far outweighs mere stats, which are impressive of themselves. Let's send him off in style in the Firsts, and shore up all those other positions. The Crane Cup To serve one club with distinction is a fine thing. To do it with two clubs, amassing huge amounts of runs in the process, takes things to a higher place indeed. This week, we play Bell Post Hill for the Crane Cup, named in honour of Neville Crane. At an age when most people would be content to grab the pipe and slippers and slip into gentle retirement, not only does Cranie continue to serve our club as a respected administrator, but to play with the Navy in the Sixths, where this year he has produced yet more runs. His cross-batted swish that compensate handsomely for any loss of flexibility brought on by the years is still a thing to behold. Younger bowlers from the opposition are gob-smacked to see the ball disappearing to the squareleg boundary considerably faster than they bowled it. Cricket at our level depends on people like Neville Crane to survive, and thrive. As a mark of respect of Neville, let's make sure the Crane Cup is in our possession comes stumps in a fortnight.

The Tribune turns Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club stalwart Ken Le Hunt has provided us with more background on The Tribune, which this year celebrates years of keeping members, and a considerable audience outside the club, informed. "The TBT was first born in / as a way to have a bit of fun with the guys in the club and came from the fact my footy team in those days did a newsletter (and posted it!). As I looked forward to getting that in the mail during the season, the thought struck me we should do something similar at N&CCC. "So I enlisted the help of Ian Quarrell, who took my scribbles (game highlights, interviews and nasty stories, generally fabricated) and typed them (with a real typewriter!) onto some special paper during his working hours at 'The Railways'. "Then he gave it to Paul Anderson, who used the facilities at Geelong Teachers College to print off copies that were brought back to the clubrooms for subsequent distribution. "Paul eventually moved us from the special paper to the 'Roneoed method' that smelt like methylated spirits! "I seem to recall Barry Shaw running an 'arsed and grassed' competition primarily aimed at highlighting those who dropped catches. This was the main award of the time and progressive results were published. "When I left in, I understand JL Taylor and BJ Edwards took over the publication and extended it with even further nastiness in the form of the Platypus and BJ s turn of phrase (he was an English master after all!). "This was around the time of the Watergate scandal with Richard Nixon and the journos who broke that story were from the Washington Post (remember no Internet!!!) and when we were looking for a name for the mag, we tried to fit a newspaper name to it. "The Post didn t fit and so we came up with the Tribune (sort of runs with Two Blue, the t s have it!) from the old New York Herald Tribune which I think was defunct, but lots of papers throughout the world had Tribune in their masthead at that time anyway. "Not really connected to Watergate I know, but it sounded nice! "I m grateful to all those who have picked up the mantle since those days and made it what it is now. "Well done!"

The Geelong Cricket Association is considering some changes to the one day game fixtures next season. With current international T's, Big Bash League, IPL, international one day series, world cup and state one day games (Ryobi Cup) being such a large part of the first class cricket scene, the GCA would like clubs thoughts on playing in coloured clothing and with a white cricket ball. The following question survey has been provided for your feedback and comment, which will be collated and the general consensus passed back to the GCA. Would you support ONE DAY senior fixtures for the season in the following formats:. Please choose one response from the following one day options; A) First XI teams only to play in coloured clothing with a white ball. B) First and Second XI teams only to play in coloured clothing with a white ball. C) First XI through to and including Fourth XI teams to play in coloured clothing with a white ball. D) Keep it the way it is currently. E) Other (please specify).. Please choose one preference for coloured clothing; A) Coloured tops and pants for all teams wearing coloured clothing. B) Coloured tops and pants for First XI with an option for coloured tops and white pants for all other grades. C) No coloured clothing. D) Other (please specify).. Please choose one preference for a T round for the regular season. Apart from the current GCA T tournament, is your club interested in having one of the regular season rounds played as a T round; A) The round before Christmas to be a T round played by all grades. B) The round before Christmas to be a T round played by Third and Fourth XI only. C) Any other round to be a T round played by all grades. D) Any other round to be a T round played by Third and Fourth XI only. E) No T games during the regular season. F) Other (please specify). (The idea behind the round before the Christmas is that players might wish to head off on their Christmas break as early as possible, with a T round finishing mid afternoon.) 5 Past Players afternoon Saturday afternoon saw the annual Past Players function held once again at the Queens Park Pavilion and this year we celebrated the premiership anniversaries from the seasons /, / and 8/. / saw a successful th XI premiership win over Grovedale, the members of that side being: Chris Hocking (c) Neville Crane Andrew Duff Mark Giles Richie Herd Denis Hickelton Tony Marinelli Bryce Middleton Mick Pitaro Ben Renick Mark Turnley Hocks gave us an animated and heartfelt run through of the game and the terrific efforts put in by all the players - with the bowlers shining on day one and setting it up for the batters on day to grind away (running between wickets appeared to be at a very slow pace!) but despite that they prevailed by runs and gave Hocks his greatest thrill at N&CCC, as he admitted later on. Scoreboard: / also saw a successful th XI premiership, this time over Leopold, the members of that side being: Anthony Devlin (c) Don Barton Graeme Chisholm Andrew Elliott Trent Marshall Ian McGregor Jimmy Scott Philip Twaddle Michael Wholohan Dale Williamson Adam Woollett Chisa took us through this game and spoke of the aggro involved as we set up a plan to knockover their big gun, which we did for duck! The subsequent polite sendoff given by Chisa making for an interesting afternoon! That wouldn t be right would it? Scoreboard:

8/8 saw several successful sides, again the th XI and also premierships to the th XI and st XI sides. For the th XI the members of the side were: Graeme Chisholm (c) Gerry Dalton Anthony Devlin Peter Duffield Alan Foster Allan Jamieson Terry Johnson Scoreboards: Gavin Merriman Graeme Nelson Craig Sing Peter Whiteside Chisa again regaled us all this time with stories of the delicate balancing act required when of his players had to leave at various times for football commitments and it looked like they could be required later in the afternoon, necessitating a deliberate slowdown by the batters and a severely rearranged batting order. This was further complicated and needed judicious management as the game went to two innings over days but we prevailed in the end. For the th XI the members of the side were: Tony Leeds (c) Paul Anderson Graeme Blackley George Briggs Ross Gear Barry Flanagan Peter Landers Peter Loney Bob Merriman Colin Rutherford Greg Sands Leedsie took us through this victory, highlighting the clever and adept way he manipulated some of the members of his squad who thought they may have been a bit more experienced! He also highlighted the roles played by Barry Flanagan and George Briggs and the lasting impressions they have left us with as wonderful teammates and members of the club.

Scoreboards: For the st XI the members of the side were: Michael Bowtell (c) Mark Browne Robert Cassio Chris Lynch Frank Meek Russell Mitchell Paul Sheahan Rob Thomson Philip Twaddle Greg Wells Stephen Wells Goose gave us the gory details of Mick getting his nose re-arranged by a rampant and aggressive opposition batsman - leaving an unmistakeable marker of blood in the position that a wide-eyed and trembling substitute fielder in Dale Pearce was subsequently ordered to stand! He also highlighted the importance of celebrating your teamates successes and to be proud of what you and the team achieved, being N&CCC! Scoreboards: It was pleasing to see some old faces in the rooms for the first time in a long time and we appreciate the efforts made by everyone to attend. Whilst it was certainly fewer in number than last year, an extremely enjoyable time was had by all. The club needs these events well attended to keep alive the tradition of the two-blues and ensure that tradition is developed and visible for the current playing members to build on. This event will run each year and will be scheduled in mid-late February to coincide with the last home game of the First XI for the season, so make sure you mark it in your calendar and make every effort to attend next year!

Two Blue Scoreboard / round For full scoreboards click on mycricket.cricket.com.au FIRST XI lost Mark Browning February th, NEWTOWN & Chilwell has kept the window ajar to make a long-awaited GCA finals series appearance after a solid batting display against premiership fancy East Belmont. The Two Blues improvement in their top orderr was a key to a stronger display with the bat. John Simson (), who was promoted to opener, put on 8 with Jake Ibbs () for the first wicket and, batting with more fluency than recently, went on to his maiden half-century in the firsts. John Carpenter (), whose season had stalled after a fine start, was another batsman promoted up the list. He was elevated to No. and also responded positively. With his new-ball bowlers unable to make a break through, Chris Bambury (-) used himself and Jerome Teal (-) for extended spells, the pair sharing nearly overs throughout the afternoon. t to East Belmont on Stinton Oval Teal was particularly effective in his first spell, taking three of the first four wickets to fall. Newtown & Chilwell, which won the corresponding fixture in -, will be desperate to break its three-matchh losing streak next week as it has slipped out of the top six. East Belmont, on the other hand, with another big game in the last round against Geelong West, will be equally determined not to drop a match in which it started favourite. Mark Browning February 8th, EAST Belmont showed its form at the business end of the season is as impressive as anyone's when it scored a match winning - against Newtown & Chilwell at Stinton Oval. The Lions methodically chased down the they had been set by the Two Blues in 8 overs. They exposed the limitations of their attack and Newtown & Chilwell, by losing four games in a row, will now miss playing in the finals. As with their counterparts last week, the home side's pace attack, could make no impact on a batsmen's paradise. Andrew Baars () and Jon Kettle () took full advantage with a fantastic opening stand of. They both eventually fell to the persevering off-spin of John Carpenter (-8), but at - with plenty of overs in hand East Belmont had the opportunity to consolidate and then confidently continue their run chase. They would lose only one more wicket, Shaun Hooley stumped off another off-spinner, Ben Neville. Chris Bambury (8 n.o.) is hard to remove when the bowling conditions are favourable, let alone when the wicket is relatively easy. Along with Mark Hanley ( n.o.), he showed the extent of the East Belmont batting depth. The Lions enter the last round with second spot up for grabs and form as impressive as any of the other premiership contenders.
