1 The Bronze V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 4 JUNE/JULY 2012 I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Team News 2 An all too common sight Junior News & 3 fixtures Club Shop 4 Player 5 Profile Ask the 5 Umpire Fixtures & 6 Results Statzone Honours 8 Board The Duck 9 Pond The 2012 season has been one of the worst and most frustrating of the Club s entire 60 years. There have been 16 cancellations from a total of 40 games (40%) so far for the senior sides, not to mention games which have been rain affected or played in conditions similar to that in October or November. While the Junior section has been hit even harder still, losing 17 out of a possible 35 games (49%). If you also consider that training for both Seniors and Juniors has been severely hampered, it really has affected every member. There has also been the detrimental effect on the Social side of the club with so many abandonments. The planned Single Wicket Competition had to be cancelled but The Committee are looking at rearranging the event later on in the season. What is important though, is that when we do get up and running with some nice weather and cricket, Bronze needs all of its members to support the Club as best they can. It would be a shame for the Club s Diamond Jubilee to not be celebrated fully. Quiz & Curry Night The first social event of the year saw a pleasing turn out at The Anson for the Kingfisher Quiz & Curry Night which was hosted by England & Nottinghamshire s Graeme Swann along with other exinternational cricketers. The quiz was of a high standard, perhaps a little too hard in places, but was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to The Wood Choppers & The Harpers who were victorious. Both teams have won tickets to a Warwickshire game. A special thanks needs to go Joe Kasujee who organized the curry side of events and to Barry Wood for doing the quiz. A great night enjoyed by all. Stay tuned for more social events in this anniversary year! 1

2 P A G E 2 James Bradin 504 runs & 19 wickets Including 5-56 First Team The Saturday side have experienced a mixed start to the campaign. Three games have been abandoned without a ball being bowled and only one game has been played in what you might call Cricket weather! In the five games played, two have resulted in 20 point victories with Ansley and Warwick being the opponents. The latter match ending up being a real nail biter as victory was only secured with 1 wicket and 2 balls to spare, despite only requiring 118. The 1sts also dominated an excellent batting side in Barby. Mr Bronze (James Bradin) scored his highest score with an unbeaten and flawless 164*, his 10th century for Bronze and 7th in the last two years. He s also got a 5 for this year too. The boy is a bit special. The 1sts have also experienced the rarest of results in cricket; a tie! Atherstone were the visitors and were on course for victory until a calamitous run out left the teams on matching scores. Unfortunately, there have been two defeats to Southam & YMF, but Tidy s men are ready for revenge in the return fixtures. The Sunday 1sts have found the step up in division a tough task with only one victory and four defeats, although competitive in each so far. Highlights were another hundred for JB and a 50 for Craig Wood. Bowling has been good with perennial tweaker Steve Whittall and the vest loving Craig Wood grabbing a pair of 5 for s. Second Team Jitu Mandhyan 47* on his return to action The toughest opponent the Saturday 2nds have faced this year has been the weather. They have only played four games out of a possible eleven which has left Coley s Crusaders kicking their heels somewhat. The stop start nature to the season has not helped with the 2nds enduring a tough start to the year. In the four games played, there have been two uncharacteristic heavy defeats against the division s top two, Warwick and Barby. A home victory against Moseley Ashfield who were bowled out for 113 by the wily old foxes Barry Macey (3/10) and Paul Vale (4/35). It was then the turn of the Indian handy man to knock off the runs with a well crafted 47 not out. Matt Coley is the only batsmen to cross 50 for the year but a gritty losing draw against Atherstone is hopefully the result to kick start the season. The Sunday 2nds have won 3 and lost 2 under the guidance of G Star. They are made up of mainly youngsters who were or currently are playing youth team cricket. Stand outs are Jake Shearwood for his maiden 100 and the Clarke brothers with the ball. Third Team Jack Stocking stars with both bat & ball Following a decision taken at the AGM, there is now only a third team on a Saturday which is under the guiding hand of Mark Wood. He has definitely brought the Midas touch with him back from Cyprus as they have won three of the four games they have managed to play with the other four being abandoned. The only loss thus far in the campaign has come against table toppers Four Oaks. The batting has been strong; knocking off 212/5 vs. M&B with Hira Patel rolling back the years with 79 not out. Marcus Jones has enjoyed a great start this year with 71 not out and 51 not out against Sheldon Marlborough and Selly Park respectively. Karthik Kamalakannan is the third of the veterans to go past 50 with 77 against Four Oaks Saints. The bowling contrastingly has been the domain of the youth with Jack Stocking, Dan Greatrex and Adam Mark contributing with the ball. T H E B R O N Z E 2

3 Junior News Firstly a BIG thank you to the juniors who are attending the current coaching and to the parents for being the taxi and getting up early on a Saturday or late on a Friday! The start of the Junior season has so far been horrendous as you have read on the front page. We really are looking at unprecedented circumstances which none of you or the coaches can believe. The coaches would like to thank you all for your continuing support for making yourselves available for fixtures and training despite the weather. You are all fantastic! In the few games played, a special mention should go to Taran Gill and Abbas Jamil who have both scored 50s this year for the u13s. Unbelievably, the season actually ends in a few weeks. It feels like we haven t got going at all! Barry is busy looking at arranging some fixtures for after the season has finished though to give everyone some much needed match time. Everyone should keep their fingers crossed for some good weather! Outdoor Training UNDER 10/11 SATURDAYS am UNDER 13s FRIDAYS 5.30pm pm UNDER 15s FRIDAY 7pm pm Cost = 2 per session. We are always looking for new members. Please bring along any friends who would like to give cricket a go. First session is free to newcomers. Success Stories P A G E 3 There is no greater feeling for a coach than to see the progression from novice all the way through to Senior player. At Bronze, we regard the Youth set up as one of the most important aspects of the Club. It really is our lifeline and our future. The vast majority of the Adult sides are made up of graduates from the Youth system which shows that if you work hard then you will be rewarded. With that said, the Youth Section would like to personally congratulate Jake Shearwood for making his maiden century for the club. We hope it is the first of many. He joins a group of only 2 century makers this season. The other being another former youth player, James Bradin, who has scored 164 not out and 108 this year. Both were scored on the same weekend more impressively and takes JB to 500 runs already for the season, which considering the weather, is a great effort. Congratulations to both. Junior Presentation Night Despite the fact that we have hardly played at all this season, The Youth section would like to advertise its End of Season Presentation. This year it will take place on FRIDAY 20TH JULY. As usual, it will be at The Anson ground. This presentation night will focus on the juniors only, so we would like to see as many as we can at the club to celebrate the whole of the junior section. There is an U15 game at the ground first, but the presentation is planned to take place afterwards. The Youth section would encourage all players to come down and enjoy the match before the Presentation begins. Please see Barry Wood or your Team Manager for further details. 3

He has overstepped the popping crease by a yard. What action do you take, apart from the obvious no ball? Q2: A slow bowler is wearing one red shoe and one blue one. The batsman complains that it is distracting him and he is finding it hard to concentrate. What do you do? Answers on p.9 5
