2 Season Review P A G E 2 First Team Taking all factors into consideration, 2012 has to be regarded as a relative success for the 1 st X1 and indeed for the club as a whole. The unforgiving weather meant that it was difficult to gain any momentum and this also meant that numerous training sessions at the ground had to be cancelled. This gave little chance for a relatively young side to work on any weaknesses that had been exposed during the early season fixtures. That being said, there are positives that can be drawn from the season. The most notable positive was the impressive way the bowling unit carried themselves throughout the season and indeed there were only a handful of occasions where the opposition posted a total of over 200, thus recording maximum batting points against us. The batting line up remains naive, particularly in response to the challenge of target being set. Hopefully, moving forward, this is something that can be addressed by an improvement in the application and maturity of the top order aided by the possibility of one or two additions to the squad. Performances over the last 3 weeks of the season showed considerable improvement with relegation ultimately being comfortably avoided and it is hoped that these improvements can be carried into next season to enable us to hit the ground running. Tidy Second Team 2012 was a testing year for the 2 nd X1 with almost half of the season washed out. It is worth mentioning that without the endeavours of Barry and also Steve, it could have been more. Due to this the early season was very stop start and when combined with player availability, there was not much by way of continuity. That said, we still managed some decent performances. Once the weather bettered so did our performances which culminated in a fantastic second half to t h e s e a s o n especially the last month which led to a healthy mid table finish. A special mention should go to the young players who have really stepped up this year, particularly Matt James & Jake Shearwood (pictured left). Colesey Third Team My first year back at the club has been both highly rewarding and thoroughly frustrating as the weather has had such a massive impact on our season. Over half of our games fell victim to the elements while a couple of other games were lost to other sides unable to get sides out to face us. They had clearly been far too worried to take on the mighty Bronze! The games we did manage to get in were highly competitive and to be captain of such a fantastic side has been an absolute honour. The effort has always been exemplary and the games were played in great spirit. It has been pleasing to see the progress of so many young players this year. Players like Adam Mark and Dan Greatrex have been exceptional this year and will hopefully continue their p r o g r e s s w h i l e t h e experience of the wily old foxes (no names!) has certainly helped. Whoever takes over next year has got a great bunch to work with. Up the Bronze! Mark T H E B R O N Z E 2

4 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 6 PAGE 4 Sponsor Us! The Club are actively seeking a sponsor or several sponsors for the forthcoming season. Do you know of a company who would be willing to make a donation to the club or sponsor a side or sides? The club currently have 5 adult sides and 4 junior ones and we have a reputation for producing home grown talent as the majority of adult players are graduates of the youth system. The club is very family orientated and a great place for players to develop as well as to watch the real beautiful game. Anyone interested would in return have the option of either having the company name in the newsletter, on the front of playing shirts, on the website or all of the above. Currently, the newsletter is sent to over 100 members and the website has had 71,000 hits since its creation in Hopefully you can see the potential this opportunity has and the amount of people that would see your advert. Any interested parties are invited to make themselves known to The Committee either in person or send an to the club. Many thanks in advance. There are various sponsorship packages available which offer different levels of investment to any interested party. These being: Main Club Sponsor As main club sponsor your logo and details would become synonymous with Bronze Cricket Club, taking pride of place in everything we do. From matches to events, newsletters to websites and social media your brand will be heavily featured in everything Bronze related. Match Ball Sponsor As match ball sponsor you would be doing us the kind honour of providing all of match balls for the season. It is Warwickshire league rules to provide 2 new balls per game, one for each innings. To enforce this rule all match balls must be purchased directly from the Warwickshire league Junior Section Sponsor As Junior Section sponsor you would be greatly helping the development of future generations of young cricketers. The Bronze Junior Section take great pride in giving young boys and girls the opportunity to play cricket and to help them develop their skills. A sponsor of the junior section would greatly benefit us by helping provide equipment to make sure we give the youngsters the best experience possible. Kit Sponsor Kit is an important necessity for all cricket teams. Gone are the days of turning up in white flannels and having a bit of a bowl and a bat. Nowadays cricket sides have a full clothing range from playing shirts, trousers and jumpers to training wear and leisure wear enabling everyone to show off their cricketing allegiance. Bronze currently has space for sponsors on all of our clothing range. There is an opportunity for 250 Bronze members to wear clothing branded with your logo. Contact Us We would be happy to discuss any of the options with you. We understand that needs vary from person to person so we are flexible on our offerings. To speak to us further or to make an appointment to speak further please contact us via any of the usual ways. 4

6 P A G E 6 Player Profile This month we talk to a man who has made a big impact on and off the pitch since his arrival in Devon s finest, Carl Whitney. Nickname? Whitters Current bat? Woodworm Bronze, weight who cares. First bat? GM Scoremaster which I had to share with my brother, proper village. Best performance? Probably all been batting which doesn t say a lot for my bowling. For the purist in me, I would have to say my 42 over blockfest for 9 at Corley after the rarity of a Bronze batting collapse. But for enjoyment probably batting with Woody against Four Oaks and slapping Hamza all over the place. Mainly because I enjoyed watching him mentally crumble under my verbal onslaught. Favourite ground? Performance wise for me Walsall YMF, "it's my type of pitch", but seeing as we ve never done that well there, I'd go with Mount Wise in Plymouth. Cricket hero and why? Dominic Cork. Played cricket how it should be played, with intensity and passion. May not have been the best player but always gave everything. F a v o u r i t e memory? c r i c k e t Probably seeing my brother being caught at gully by a diving catch from the 12th man who only had one proper hand. Hilarious. Funniest man at Bronze? Stocko, have you seen his clothes? Funny man! He's like the chunky one that girls ignore in a boyband. Other sports or hobbies? Part of the Green Army following Plymouth Argyle around the country regularly seeing us get beat at some of the worst football grounds in the land. What would be your T20 entrance song? I Fought the Law by The Clash Stocko is like the chunky one in a boyband that girls ignore Ask the Umpire Q1: A fielder chases a ball to the boundary and goes down injured. The ball has stopped short of the rope. By the time another fielder arrives, the batsmen have run 5. The fielder deliberately fumbles the ball over the boundary. Do you award the boundary? Q2: The batsman pushes the ball to a fielder who holds onto it. The bowler informs the umpire that he is changing his action from over to round the wicket. The batsman now does some gardening at which point the fielder throws down the stumps and appeals. Is he out? Answers on p.12 6

7 P A G E 7 Ask Woody Back by popular demand, we delve into the mind of the irrepressible Craig Wood who has an answer for all of life s quandaries and conundrums. If you have a question for Ask Woody, please feel free to the club at the usual address. In the world of Disney why does Goofy stand upright while Pluto remains on all fours when both are dogs? Well firstly I'd like to say its good to be back after a short absence. Now on with the answer. The main reason that Pluto is stuck on all fours, like a pleb, is because he was one of the first characters to be designed and old Walt Disney didn't care too much for him. When he designed Goofy he thought the character had a bad enough life without being bent over like a stray Darlaston Shire Horse, staked to the floor next to the canal. There were rumours that Pluto also received some less than adequate physio in Bentley. Hence why he's still the same after the treatment. How many vests do you own and which is your favourite and why? This is a question I can answer fairly easily as I get asked it a lot. I'm currently the proud owner of a solid 16 vests. I'd have to say the Canary Yellow number is a personal favourite, as well as the favourite of James Bradin. We have a long history of comedy linked to the colour Yellow. My 2nd favourite is the Kosovan Tribute Vest. Which looks right at home at a car wash on a disused pub car park. We all know the sort. What protein shake do you drink to make you look like a tank? Ahhh, well firstly I'd like to say tank is unfortunately the wrong word. After a long absence from the gym I'm more of a streak than I used to be which is saying something. The protein I used to use in my training days was Maximuscle Cyclone. It doesn't last very long and it is expensive, but it give good results. Holland and Barratt's former 'buy one get one for a penny' sale got demolished that's safe to say. 7
