2 GENERAL INFORMATION The real purpose of competition is to have fun, to be able to participate, to improve skills, to learn sportsmanship, to develop a sense of responsibility and self-discipline, to develop group loyalty, to learn to compete within established rules, to accept decisions of officials and to develop sound minds and bodies. - USA Hockey A NOTE ABOUT THE COMPETITION U.S. Figure Skating and the Rocky Mountain FSC are pleased to announce the 2009 Rocky Mountain Basic Skills Synchro Challenge! This competition will be held in conjunction with the 2009 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships. It will be open to Basic Skills Beginner 1, 2, and 3 level synchronized skating teams. This event is not considered an official part of the sectional championships. There will be a separate judging panel, separate awards and it will be conducted under the rules of the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program. LOCATION & ARENA: The competition will be held in at the Ice Centre at the Promenade, Westminster Blvd., Westminster, CO The Rocky Mountain Basic Skills Synchro Challenge will be held in the green rink, which is the ice sheet adjacent to the surface holding the preliminary, pre-juvenile and open juvenile events of the 2009 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships. The green rink is an NHL size surface, 200 x 85, and has seating for 800 people on one side of the rink. The judges stand will be at ice level, opposite of the seating. DATE: The competition will take place on Saturday, January 31, Practice ice will be available from approximately 6:00am 10:45am, with the competition following from approximately 11:00am 1:00pm. ENTRIES: The entry deadline is December 1, 2008, and applications should be mailed to: Rocky Mountain Basic Skills Synchro Challenge C/o Rocky Mountain FSC Westminster Blvd. Westminster, CO The entry fee is $200 per team. Make checks payable to the Rocky Mountain FSC. Due to limited ice time, this competition will be limited to a maximum of 24 teams, divided between Beginner 1, 2 and 3. If more that 24 total entries are received, they will be accepted in the order of receipt, with priority going to teams in the Pacific Coast section.

3 ELIGIBILITY: All teams entering the competition must be registered with U.S. Figure Skating as a Beginner synchronized skating team. Teams may represent either a U.S. Figure Skating member club or a U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills program. All team members must be current members of U.S. Figure Skating. They may be either regular members or Basic Skills members. Skaters may not have passed higher than preliminary in any discipline. The majority (more than ½) of the skaters on any team must not have passed any official U.S. Figure Skating tests outside the scope of the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills program as of the entry deadline. CONDUCT OF THE EVENT: This event will be conducted under the rules of the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills program. There will be no separation of teams based whether they are from the Midwestern section vs. the Pacific Coast section. Teams from both sections will compete together in one event. Basic Skills rules allow no more than six teams in a group. If more than six teams enter an event, they will be split into Group A and Group B, in a random draw. Placements and awards will be based on these groups, final rounds will not be held. If only one team enters a particular event, the judges will award marks according to the rules and scoring system, and the team will automatically receive first place. The 6.0 judging system will be used. Please note that the judging panel will be a different panel than those individuals serving at the 2009 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships. Per Basic Skills rules, judges are selected by the host organization, and must be a U.S. Figure Skating member at least 16 years old. It is not required that they are an official U.S. Figure Skating judge. EVENTS TO BE SKATED: BASIC SKILLS BEGINNER 1: BASIC SKILLS BEGINNER 2: BASIC SKILLS BEGINNER 3: A team of 8-16 skaters, the majority of who must be Under 9 years old, as of July 1, Program duration: 1 ½ - 2 minutes A team of 8-16 skaters, the majority of who must be 9 11 years old, as of July 1, Program duration: 1 ½ - 2 minutes- A team of 8-16 skaters, the majority of who must be At least 12 years old, as of July 1, Program duration: 2 2 ½ minutes Reminder for all levels: No skaters may have passed higher than the preliminary test in any discipline. Further, the majority of the team members may not have passed any official U.S. Figure Skating tests as of the entry deadline of December 1, Skaters are not permitted to crossover to any other team of any other level.

4 OVERVIEW OF REQUIRED ELEMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS FOR EACH LEVEL. BASIC SKILLS BEGINNER 1: - CIRCLE: Include a 2-foot turn and a forward inside and/or outside edge glide - LINE: Cover the ice, all forward skating - BLOCK: Cover the ice, only 1 configuration allowed - WHEEL: A 4-spoke wheel with backward pumps - INTERSECTION: 2 lines facing each other, 2 foot glide at the point of intersection. RESTRICIONS: - Additional elements are not allowed - Holds allowed: Shoulder-to-shoulder and hand-to-hand only - Changes of rotational direction and traveling within elements are not allowed. - Steps or moves from Basic 6 or higher are not allowed BASIC SKILLS BEGINNER 2: - CIRCLE: Include the combination move from Basic 8* - LINE: Cover the ice, may include forward and backward skating - BLOCK: Cover the ice, 1 or 2 configurations - WHEEL: Wheel of choice with backward pumps - INTERSECTION: 2 lines facing each other, 2- foot glide or 1-foot glide at point of intersection. RESTRICIONS: - Additional elements are not allowed - Holds allowed: Shoulder-to-shoulder and hand-to-hand only - Changes of rotational direction and traveling within elements are not allowed. - Steps or moves from Free Skate 2 or higher are not allowed BASIC SKILLS BEGINNER 3: - CIRCLE: Include the combination move from Basic 8* - LINE: Cover the ice, forward and backward skating - BLOCK: Cover the ice, 2 or 3 configurations - WHEEL: Wheel of choice - INTERSECTION: 2 lines facing each other, 1 foot glide or forward lunge at the point of intersection. RESTRICIONS: - Changes of rotational direction and traveling within elements are not allowed. * Combination move from Basic 8: Two forward crossovers into a forward inside Mohawk, foot down or step behind, backward crossover, step forward into forward inside edge glide.

5 MUSIC: CD s are the only acceptable form of media. CD s must be clearly marked with the name of the team, the event entered and the music length. Each CD must have only one track on it. Each CD must be in a standard hard sided jewel case or CD sleeve, also labeled with the team s name and event. Due to compatibility and reliability reasons music may not be submitted on re-recordable CD-RW discs. Competition music must be turned in at the registration desk at the time of registration and will be available for pick up at the registration desk at the conclusion of the event. All teams must have at least one additional copy of their CD at rink side at practice session and during the actual competition event. Please bring a CD for practice. REGISTRATION: The registration desk will be at the Broomfield Events Center, the main competition rink for the 2009 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Championships. A team representative should register the team by Friday evening, January 30 th, so that credentials may be distributed to skaters prior to the next morning s practice session. OFFICIAL BULLETIN BOARD: The official bulletin board will contain any announcements or changes and it is the responsibility of the teams to check it often for official notices. There will be an official bulletin board located in the lobby of the Ice Centre at the Promenade and at the Broomfield events center. AWARDS: Each skater on a team placing 1-4 in their event will receive a medal, remaining teams will receive a certificate or a ribbon. All medals will be awarded at the conclusion of the Rocky Mountain Basic Skills Synchro Challenge. ADMISSION & CREDENTIALS: All skaters, two designated chaperones and all official team coaches will receive a credential. This credential will serve as free admission to any events of the 2009 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships. It is good for events at both the Ice Centre at the Promenade and the Broomfield Events Center. Admission to the Rocky Mountain Basic Skills Challenge events will be free. However, any parents, friends or family members wishing to watch events of the 2009 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships must purchase an event ticket. An order form is provided in this announcement. PRACTICE ICE: Teams will be able to purchase one 10-minute block of official practice ice on Saturday morning prior to the competition. Sessions will be held from approximately 6:00am 10:45am. Teams will be assigned to the ice session in the start order for the competition. The 10 minute block of ice will be $100. Teams may reserve the session by filling out the practice ice form at the end of this announcement.

6 LOCAL DIRECTIONS: U.S Hwy. 36 (Denver-Boulder Turnpike) is the main route to and from most of the hotels, arenas and restaurants and shopping. West bound can be crowded from 7:30am - 9:00am and east bound gets crowded from about 4:30pm - 6:00pm. The hotel and event arenas are within about a 15 minute drive except during rush hour. 7 HOTEL INFORMATION: The local organizing committee has reserved blocks of rooms at hotels in close proximity to both arenas at discounted competition rates. These hotels were selected for their quality, location, amenities and past experience handling skating groups at a similar Championship competition. A list of the participating hotels can be found at Please contact the hotels directly according to the contact information provided. We are not requiring teams to go through a housing service or linking practice ice to housing arrangements. The official hotel for the competition is the Omni Interlocken Resort, 500 Interlocken Blvd., Broomfield, Colorado GROUND TRANSPORTATION: For teams needing bus transportation in the competition area, please contact companies listed in the competition website who will aid you in your local transportation needs. The local organizing committee is not involved in the direct booking of any transportation needs. AIR TRAVEL: Direct or connecting flights into Denver International Airport (DEN) will be most convenient for teams traveling by air. Denver is a hub for United and Frontier Airlines and also is a destination for most airlines. Denver International is located on the north-eastern side of Denver. The quickest route to the Broomfield area is via E-470 and the Northwest Parkway. This is a toll road but is never crowded and is approximately minutes to drive. Hwy 36 may also be reached via Pena Blvd. to I-70 West to I-270 which connects to US Hwy. 36. During the morning and evening rush hours this is a slow drive and may take an hour or more to reach the arena and hotel areas. VENDORS: Numerous vendors will be in attendance during the competition selling a variety of skating related items. Vendors will be located on the main level of the Ice Centre and at the Broomfield Event Center. Championship apparel will be available at the Ice Centre only. TOURISM & RESTAURANTS: There are a variety of tourism, restaurant and shopping destinations available in Promenade and Broomfield area. Go to for more details. ALTITUDE & CLIMATE: The altitude in the Broomfield / Westminster area is approximately a mile above sea level. Weather in Colorado s front range in January can vary from cold and snow to mild sunny days with temperatures in the 60s. Most night and early morning temperatures are below freezing. The humidity in Colorado is very low. The most important thing to remember is to be well hydrated. You can t drink enough water. Dress in layers as conditions can change rapidly throughout the day.

This is a great way for beginner teams to learn about the sport and get excited about what is to come in synchronized skating! January 31, 2009 FORM D ENTRY FORM D: PRACTICE ICE All teams competing in the Rocky Mountain Beginner Synchro Challenge will have the opportunity to purchase one 10-minute block of ice time on Saturday morning, January 31 st, prior to their competition. The practice ice will be held on the Green Rink at the Ice Centre at the Promenade, the same surface the competition will be held. Practices will be between approximately 6:00 10:45am. They will be scheduled based on the start order of the competition, with teams skating early in the competition having the first practice sessions. Due to limited ice for the 2009 Midwestern and Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships, beginner teams may not purchase practice ice outside of this 10-minute block. The team s music will be played during the practice session, at the discretion of the coach. However, it may not be started from the beginning after the 7 minute mark of the practice session. The cost for the 10-minute practice session will be $ per team. Please circle one: YES, we would like our practice session. A check for $100 made out to Rocky Mountain FSC is included with our entry.
