1 The Inside Edge F A L L Welcome from our Board President I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Junior Club & ISI 2 Testing 3 Calendar & 4 Board Members Showcase 5 As we move back to IHSA s main training facility, Hartland Ice House, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back home! We have some new members as we enter the new season. If you are a long time member, be sure to keep your eyes open for new faces and welcome the skaters and their families to our program. Our new members likely have a lot of questions as they learn about our club. I encourage our membership at large to help the board and committee chairs greet and answer questions for our new members as they settle into their new home. We are excited for the upcoming season and looking forward to a great year. The board is working hard to provide opportunities for our skaters to grow their skills both on and off the ice. Upcoming plans include skating seminars, opportunities for lessons with guest coaches and securing a permanent off ice room to provide dance classes for our membership. Look for the return of our Wall of Champions pictures after the wall in the Stadium rink is repainted. We are very excited about the number of new pictures that have been added this year. Also keep your eyes peeled for our new banners recognizing IHSA skaters and teams that have placed 4 th or higher in the final rounds of Regionals, Sectionals or National Competition. The number of banners is impressive and we are excited to recognize the achievements of our skaters. I would like to thank one of our own members, Jenny Pearsall, of Bovia Designs for her assistance in the design of our banners. Heather Olson Pictures and Links 6-7 Ice House Skating Academy History Coaches 8 Learn to Skate 9 Founded in 2005, Ice House Skating Academy is the figure skating club for Kensington Valley Ice House in Brighton, Michigan and Hartland Ice House (Hartland Sports Center) in Hartland, Michigan. IHSA is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization. We welcome all levels of skaters at any time throughout the year, and pride ourselves on making our rinks' Learn To Skate Basic Skills members part of the IHSA family. IHSA offers different levels of membership to suit your needs and budget including Introductory, 2nd club, and more. Ice House Skating Academy is a member of US Figure Skating, as well as ISI. Our skaters pursue a number of different disciplines, as it a goal of our club to foster all paths and forms of figure skating.

2 P A G E 2 What is Junior Club? Ice House Skating Academy's Junior Club is for skaters interested in pursuing their skating level beyond the Basic Skills Learn To Skate program. Our Junior Club program is designed to help transition skaters into more individualized lessons that tailor to the skater's level, ability, and goals. It also serves as a bridge to introduce the skater and family to Club Membership. IHSA qualified coaches will initiate the next steps in skating skills, and membership including: freestyle, moves in the field, testing, competition, exhibition, proper skating attire, etiquette, and much more. The on-ice curriculum includes components such as stroking and edges, power skating, introductory moves-in-the-field, spins, and jumps. Junior Club skaters will learn and perform a one minute program during the last class as an exhibition performance. Any skater who was passed Basic 3 or higher is eligible to join. ISI competitions begin in November and usually wrap up the season in March of each year. There is also an ISI Worlds Competition located in a different part of the US each year that occurs during the summer. Our Mission To foster the enjoyment of figure skating on ice. To encourage the instruction, practice and advancement of the members in any or all disciplines of figure skating; and to encourage and cultivate a spirit of fraternal feeling among ice skaters. EVENTS Ice House Skating Academy hosts a number of different events throughout the season, including the annual ice show, exhibitions for the Learn to Skate classes, the all-night party, send off exhibitions for national competitions, and our yearly banquet. We also host the annual Michigan Showcase competition and the Grassroots to Champions seminar- the only club in Michigan to do so. I N S I D E E D G E

As we enter the new competitive season we would like to remind everyone that if you hold a first club membership with Ice House Skating Academy, when entering USFSA competitions you represent IHSA and not Hartland Ice House/Sports Center or Kensington Valley Ice House. When we look to wish our skaters good luck at upcoming competitions we have noticed some skaters entering competitions under the rink name and not the club name. When entering USFSA competitions skaters represent IHSA. Our ISI skaters represent Hartland Ice House/Kensington Valley Ice House only when entering ISI competitions. All competition entry forms need to be signed by an Executive Board Member. Look for Heather Olson, Tiffany Pagogna, Giannine Corrigan or Nancy Bodo when you have forms that need to be signed. P A G E 5 Ice House Continues to Represent National Showcase Ice House Skating Academy's first appearance at a Showcase competition was back in 2009, and only 2 skaters represented our club- Katie Krausman & Piercyn Hunt. Their duet won the Silver medal at the Parade of Champions and the passion was born. Since then, IHSA has more than doubled its membership, thanks in part to a successful Learn to Skate program and the wildly successful Harmony Theatre Company; and the Showcase discipline of US Figure Skating continues to be one of our primary focuses. Our skaters love theatre- plain and simple. Majority of them also compete Freestyle, Test Track and/or ISI, but when it comes time to dive into our Costume Closet and start choreographing dramatic and entertainment programs - the Ice House comes alive. The creativity and pure joy that follows is nothing short of magic; thanks to our passionate, dedicated coaches and parent volunteers. We look forward to a bright future for theatrical figure skating and thank Mr. Stillwell & Mr. Curtis for this gift of Showcase; the Ice House Skating Academy wouldn't be the same without it. 27 skaters set out for Hyannis, Massachusetts this year, the largest club representation at National Showcase; and together they brought home a total of 17 Gold, 12 Silver, 10 Bronze, and 5 Pewter medals. In addition, Paige Bartholomew and Ashlyn Olson prevailed as the Duet Champions with their Big, Bad Voodoo performance. Harmony's Production team pocketed the Silver with their Oliver routine and our very own Piercyn Hunt led by example with her 4th consecutive National Champion title and Abbey Biehl as Novice Dramatic Champion. This was the first National level competition for many of the skaters and both first-timers and seasoned competitors alike enjoyed the locker room camaraderie, club bonding and new-found friendships with skaters from all over the United States- especially our California girls at the All Year FSC! 9 P A G E 9 About Learn to Skate Most skaters get their earliest training in a "group lesson" environment. This is a very cost-effective way to begin a journey onto the ice -- whether the journey will ultimately move towards figure skating, hockey, speed skating, or just plain recreational skating. Generally, learn-to-skate programs will have class sizes ranging from 5-20 students, and most rinks offer a range of classes appropriate to a wide range of ages and initial skill levels. Because the costs of the ice and the instructor's fees are spread out over a number of students, the fees are usually quite reasonable. In North America, there are 3 primary "programs" of learn-to-skate instruction, depending on the affiliation of your rink, USFSA At USFSA-oriented rinks, the program is generally called "Basic Skills", and typical levels have names like "Basic 1" "Basic 8", and "Freeskate 1" Freeskate 6" for more advanced learners. ISI At ISI-oriented rinks, the classes are known as "Alpha", "Beta", "Gamma", "Delta" CANADA In Canada, the "Canskate" program offers classes with names like "Beginner Badge", etc All of the programs develop similar skillsets. They start at the very beginning (fall, get up, stand on the ice), and progress through strong edges, front and back crossovers, stops and turns. Students completing the fundamental sequence in any program will be ready to move onto advanced training in whatever discipline they chose. Each of the listed programs offers several "grades" or levels. Usually, each level will encompass 4-8 weeks of instruction with lesson time of about 30 minutes per week. In most programs, the skaters are tested by their instructors during the final week of a session and are either advanced to the next level or retained for further development. Figure skaters generally move into individual instruction with a "professional" when they have mastered the skills from their learn-to-skate curriculum. Often, the professional they chose for individual instruction will be one they have met and come to know through the learn-to-skate program. Parents and skaters both should take advantage of this opportunity to evaluate and develop a relationship with potential future instructors. Most Figure Skating Clubs require that incoming full members complete or demonstrate proficiency equivalent to a certain level of their local Learn-to-Skate program. This helps to ensure that incoming skaters are able to handle themselves competently on the ice and will not pose undue hazard to either themselves or other skaters on quick-moving freestyle sessions. Passing through a Learn-to-Skate program is not a pre-requisite to entering the program of standard Tests within the USFSA, nor is it a pre-requisite to any competition levels, although many competitions offer specific events tailored to the Basic Skills program levels.
