2 1.3 FINAL CONSIDERATIONS a) The MAG SMC shall be in control of its own procedures. b) Where any event occurs that is not elsewhere provided in these regulations, any decision or action required shall be decided by a simple majority vote of the MAG SMC, whose determination of the matter shall be final and not to be construed as having set a precedent. c) Where by error or omission any of the foregoing regulations shall require interpretation, the original intent of the MAG SMC in the framing of, rather than the letter of the law, shall prevail. 1.4 POWER TO CO-OPT The MAG SMC shall have the power to co-opt such additional persons to the MAG SMC as is deemed necessary, and for such time or on specific terms as determined by the MAG SMC. A series of updating workshops will be conducted in the first part of each calendar year prior to the first competition of the year. Dates will appear in the GSA Calendar. Judges wishing to judge through the year should participate in these. 1.7 COACHING TEAM Coaching Co-ordinator Mike Remkes Plus any other accredited Club coaches A team to be appointed will endeavour to provide SA coaches with opportunities for education and professional development to ensure quality and effective coaching is available to all gymnasts. They will liaise with the State Development Officer as required. 2

3 1.8 STATE TEAMS State Team Manager Mike Remkes 1.9 REGISTRATION a) All gymnasts must be registered with GSA to be eligible to participate in competitions. b) All judges and coaches must be registered with Gymnastics Australia to be eligible to participate in competitions or to gain coaches or judges accreditation. c) Registration is on a calendar year and must be receipted by GSA no later than the closing date for competitions. d) Through registration with GA, judges and coaches also become Technical Members of Gymnastics Australia. Forms for renewal of Technical Membership are posted to each Judge and Coach (together with a Gymnastics Australia membership package for the following year) in November of each year. e) Application Forms for Technical Membership to Gymnastics Australia should be returned to the GSA office, together with Coach s Update book and the appropriate fee. Judges should return the form and fee, but no Update Book is required. f) In order to maintain or regain Technical Membership, coaches and judges are required to show evidence that they have been involved in a constant process of re-education. This re-education is defined as updating and can be achieved by attending either approved accreditation courses or by attending a number of approved updating activities that are relevant to Men s Artistic Gymnastics and the individual s level(s) and accreditation type(s). Recommended updating for judges can involve a combination of: observation of athletes in training; active judging at competitions; attendance at judging workshops; and involvement in presentation of judging courses/workshops. Recommended updating for coaches can involve a combination of: attending the State education Congress; participating in club based events, subject to those club based events being sanctioned for updating points, prior to their conduct; selected first aid courses; attending State workshops; State correspondence worksheets; observing National or State Team/Squad training; participating in National or State events as co-opted staff; attending a Judges Course; supervising a Level 1 or 2 candidate s post course requirements; and presenting at approved Coaching Courses or Workshops. Details of points required to satisfy annual updating requirements can be found in the Gymnastics Australia Technical Member Handbook (available on the Gymnastics Australia web site at _Nov_FINAL.pdf). g) Each club is required to complete a Judge s application for a candidate to attend the first suitable judges course with their annual club registration. A club can elect to send a new Judge to the beginners Judges course, or send a current judge as a refresher. If a club has four (4) Judges who regularly judge at sanctioned events they are exempt from this requirement h) Applicable fees are provided in SCHEDULE 1 ANNUAL FEES (see page 24). 3

4 2. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COACH AND THE TEAM LEADER 2.1 THE COACH a) All coaches on the floor at sanctioned 1 competitions must be currently registered and accredited with Gymnastics Australia. Coaches may be asked to produce their Gymnastics Australia Technical Membership card. Unregistered coaches will be asked to leave the competition floor. b) No gymnast will be permitted to participate unless accompanied by an accredited coach. c) Coaches must know the Code of Points and act according to the rules therein as well as those laid out in these regulations. Copies of the code of Points are available from the FIG web site ( d) Coaches should be familiar with and abide by the Coaches Code of Ethics. A copy of that code can be found on the Gymnastics Australia web site ( e) A maximum of two coaches can accompany a team and one coach for individual gymnasts. f) At Levels 1-5, coaches must remain present by the following apparatus both during the warmups and the competition. No deduction will apply for a single coach s presence during routine execution for these apparatus at Levels 1 to 5. Rings. Vault. Parallel Bars. Horizontal Bar. g) At Levels 6-10, the coach may determine whether his or her presence by the apparatus is required. Note that usual deductions for a coach s presence on the podium during routine execution will apply, as per the Code of Points, in these cases. However, coaches are always expected to ensure the safety and well-being of gymnasts in their charge. h) Coaches may not Approach the judging panel concerning the evaluation during the competition where this holds up the competition. Where further clarification is required, the coach should refer the query to the Competition Director who will take the necessary steps to clarify the query. Give signals, shouts or similar during the exercise until a gymnast presents at the end of his routine. The coach may only speak to the gymnast regarding his well-being when a fall or possible injury has occurred. An exception to this is made for Level 1 and 2 gymnasts, for whom coaches may provide some verbal prompting during the execution of a routine, without penalty. Obstruct the view of judges during the execution of a gymnast s routine. i) Coaches should request permission from the Head Judge for themselves and their team members to leave the floor area. j) Coaches should be appropriately presented in club attire. 1 Refer to Section 4.1 for details regarding sanctioned competitions. 4

5 k) Coaches are responsible for training their team members in gymnastic etiquette to behave with sportsmanship and co-operation during competition and spare rotations. l) Where possible, results will be distributed to clubs at the completion of presentations or, failing this, at the earliest possible opportunity. m) Coaches are not to consume food nor drinks (other than water in a sealable bottle), on the competition floor. 2.2 TEAM LEADERS a) Team leaders (in addition to the team coach) are encouraged to accompany the teams to assist in the orderly movement of the team and with the gymnasts clothing and bags. A team leader could be an assistant or apprentice coach or a parent. However, team leaders who are not nationally accredited as a coach may not assist in any capacity other than with the general organisation of the gymnasts. A club may have no more than one team leader at an apparatus. 2.3 PENALTIES FOR BREACHES OF COMPETITION RULES a) A coach or team leader who breaches any of these requirements at a sanctioned competition will be subject to penalty or penalties at the discretion of the MAG SMC or the Competition Director. Penalties may range from requiring the coach or team leader to take immediate action to comply with these rules up to removal from the competition floor or, in extreme cases, ejection from the competition venue. b) In the event that the application of a penalty under this clause results in a gymnast or team not complying with clause 2.1 b), then that gymnast or team will not be permitted to participate in the competition. 5

6 3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE GYMNAST 3.1 MEMBERSHIP a) Gymnasts must be registered members of Gymnastics S.A. They can be members of affiliated clubs or independent members. b) Members transferring from one affiliated club to another should complete the Gymnastics S.A. Transfer form and forward it to the GSA office with the prescribed transfer fee. No formal transfer is required when moving from a school-based program to a club, from a non-affiliated club to an affiliated club, or if the gymnast has been out of competitions/left a Club for 12 months or more (and assuming there are no outstanding fees at the former club). c) The transfer process must be completed by the closing date for the first competition the gymnast intends to enter under his new club. Gymnasts will not be eligible to compete in an event if the transfer process is not complete by the closing date for entries for that event. d) Gymnasts transferring from a club to the High Performance Program (Gym-JETS) will hold a Multi-Club Membership and will represent Gym-JETS/their club. 3.2 COMPETITION READINESS a) Gymnasts must be informed about the Code of Points and behave according to the rules b) Gymnasts must wear correct competition attire: Correct attire at levels 1 and 2 and Stage 1 consists of : Leotard or singlet in club colour or design. Long pants or shorts in club colour or design. Bare feet or white socks with or without gymnastic shoes. All members of a team must wear the same attire. Correct attire at levels 3 to 5 and Stages 2 to 4 consists of : Leotard in club colour and design. Long pants or shorts in club colour and design. Bare feet or white socks with or without gymnastic shoes. At levels 6 to 10 (including Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 élite), the gymnast: Must wear a leotard in club colour and design. Must wear long pants in club colour and design with footwear (socks with or without gym shoes) on Pommel Horse, Rings, Parallel Bars and High Bar. May wear shorts in club colour and design with or without the above described footwear on Floor Exercise and Vaulting. c) Note that dark coloured long pants are not to be worn during any competition, as specified by the Code of Points. d) All bandages must be securely fastened e) Excessive use of magnesia (chalk) should be discouraged. 6

7 f) At Levels 1 and 5 the gymnast will, under normal circumstances, be allowed a one touch warm up immediately prior to performing. g) At Levels 6 to 10, the gymnast will be entitled to a general warm up (usually 20 minutes) and an apparatus warm up (approximately 1 hour) prior to the start of the competition. Gymnasts will also, under normal circumstances, be allowed a one touch warm up immediately prior to performing. The duration of that one touch warm up will be as specified in the Code of Points. h) At the signal of completion of warm-up time, if a gymnast is still on the apparatus, he may complete the element/sequence started. Following the one touch warm-up period or during the competition pause, the apparatus may be prepared but not used. i) A gymnast may be allowed a second vault in the following circumstances: At Levels 1 and 2, gymnasts competing on Vault who miss-step their run, stumble on the board or the horse, baulk or for some other reason do not satisfy a vault that might be reasonably evaluated, may repeat the vault with a 1.0 points penalty. In this case, the vault will be assessed normally by the E jury (execution) and the D jury (difficulty) will reduce the vault s difficulty value by 1.0. At Levels 3 to 6, gymnasts competing on Vault who miss-step their run, stumble on the board or the horse, baulk or for some other reason do not satisfy a vault that might be reasonably evaluated, may repeat the vault with a 2.0 points penalty. In this case, the vault will be assessed normally by the E jury and the D jury will reduce the vault s difficulty value by 2.0. At Levels 7 to 9, gymnasts competing on Vault who miss-step their run, stumble on the board or the horse, baulk or for some other reason do not satisfy a vault that might be reasonably evaluated, may repeat the vault with a 2.0 points penalty. In this case, the vault will be assessed normally by the E jury and the D jury will reduce the vault s usual difficulty value by 2.0. The decision of whether a second vault will be allowed is to be made by the head judge for the apparatus and is not subject to appeal. j) If the necessity arises to leave the competition floor, he must notify the Jury or Head Judge. The competition must not be delayed through his absence. Unexcused absence from the competition floor may lead to disqualification and withdrawal from award contention. k) Movement between apparatus shall be carried out quietly and smartly upon announcement from the announcer. On arrival at an apparatus, the gymnasts must present themselves to the Head Judge. l) If a gymnast is injured during the competition and leaves the floor area for more than 10 minutes, he will be considered unable to continue the competition. Communication between the coach and the Jury / Head Judge should avoid any delay in the competition. m) Gymnasts must not have contact with spectators during the competition. An exception may be made in the case of a gymnast requiring medical attention. n) It is the responsibility of the gymnast or his coach to provide for existing injuries or conditions. The competition organisation will only be responsible for the management of injuries that occur during the course of that competition. 7

8 4. MAG SPECIFIC COMPETITION RULES In addition to the Gymnastics SA Competition Policy ( alia%20-%20competition%20policy%20master.pdf): 4.1 SANCTIONED COMPETITIONS The MAG SMC can provide GSA sanction to a Men s Artistic Gymnastics competition organised by clubs or entities outside of GSA. Participants in sanctioned competitions are eligible for the following benefits: Gymnasts competing in Levels 1 to 6 are eligible to upgrade to a new level, subject to achievement of the relevant scores at the sanctioned competition. Badges will be provided to competition organisers, at cost. Registration of gymnasts & coaches will be checked by GSA office staff. Eligibility requirements for sanctioned competitions are the same as for GSA competitions (see clause 3). In order to qualify as a sanctioned competition, a competition must at least satisfy the following criteria: The competition venue and equipment must be of a standard deemed acceptable by the MAG SMC. The competition must involve at least six MAG apparatus. Mushroom, buck and pommel horse are interchangeable for this purpose. All judges must be accredited and registered to judge at the required level Volunteers at the event must comply with the GSA Current Police Form Procedure. In practice, this means at least all coaches and judges must have a current National Police Certificate (usually called a police check ). The procedure can be found on the GSA web site: tralia%20-%20police%20check%20form%20procedure.pdf At least 2 apparatus judging panels must be used. A suitably qualified judge (or judges) must fill the role of competition jury. The organisation and conduct of the competition must conform to the competition and other rules as laid out in these regulations. Competition organisers must apply to MAG SMC for sanction of a specific competition. The MAG SMC has discretion to accept or reject any application or to apply additional conditions. Should the MAG SMC deem it necessary, sanction for a competition may be withdrawn. This would only apply in circumstances such as should essential criteria or additional conditions not being met. Arranging suitable judges will be the responsibility of the competition organisers. Competition organisers must record the participation of judges and coaches at each session of the competition. At least the following information must be recorded: coach/judge name, club and role (coach or judge). A copy of these records must be provided to the MAG SMC within 2 weeks of the completion of the competition. Competition organisers must provide a copy of apparatus and all around scores for all gymnasts participating in the competition to MAG SMC, within 2 weeks of the completion of the competition. Competition organisers may approach the MAG SMC for assistance in recruiting (accredited and registered) judges for their competitions. Any such assistance will be provided or not at the sole discretion of the MAG SMC and may be subject to additional conditions. 8

9 4.2 MEDICAL / FIRST AID a) Clubs and coaches must be aware that medical assistance should not be anticipated at GSA hosted competitions. The procedure for the management of incidents involving injury at these competitions is outlined below. b) It is a matter for the coach and the gymnast to ascertain the fitness of the gymnast to compete at any particular level. Gymnasts requiring a level of medical support in order to fulfil the needs of competition must either attend to their own needs or review their fitness to compete. c) Gymnastics SA will ensure that there are adequate supplies of ice readily available at each competition. The ice will be stored in a freezer within the equipment room. Plastic bags will also be available. A first aid kit will be on hand to assist with the treatment of any bleeding. d) Coaches with current accreditation are required to maintain a current (within 4 years) First Aid qualification. This ensures that each coach should be able to deal with minor injuries that may arise during an event. e) A duty First Aid Officer will be nominated for each event. This person will have a current First Aid qualification. Normally, the duty First Aid Officer will be the Competition Director. The role of the First Aid Officer is the management of incidents that involve injury at GSA competitions. This includes evaluating the situation and determining whether an injury can be adequately managed by a gymnast s coach, whether a gymnast sustaining an injury is fit to return to the competition, whether the treatment of an injury warrants calling for further assistance by way of ambulance. 4.3 COMPETITION ENTRIES a) MAG Competition Entry Forms can be downloaded from the GSA web site from the following page: Men%40^039s_Gymnastics%2F20205%2F0. b) Competition entries must be received at the GSA office by 5.00 pm on the closing date. A copy of the entry form(s) must also be sent to Pete McKenna. This date is 4 weeks prior to the event date that appears on the GSA Calendar for all competitions. Nominative entries are acceptable at this stage and alterations excluding entering additional gymnasts may be lodged up till 5.00pm on the day before the event. c) Completed entry forms must be sent by fax, post or to the GSA office. d) Late entries may be accepted at the sole discretion of the MAG SMC, however penalties may apply (except in exceptional circumstances). The penalty for a late entry will be an additional 50% added to the normal entry fee. e) Entry fees Clubs must pay entry fees at the time of entry. f) Refund of entry fees for a nominated gymnast that is not able to compete will require a medical certificate and formal application. Forms can be obtained from the Gymnastics SA office (admin@gymsa.com.au). g) If a gymnast withdraws from a competition, the Competition Organiser (Score Room) must be notified immediately. 4.4 APPARATUS SCORE SHEETS a) For all GSA hosted events, coaches are not required to fill in apparatus score sheets. 9

10 b) Score sheets will be provided on the day of the event, using information obtained from entry forms. c) Prior to the start of the competition, club coaches should check that all entry details are correct on the sheet that will be provided by the score room. This includes the level and age division of the gymnasts, competitor numbers, spelling of name, date of birth, upgrading. Where the number of gymnasts entered exceeds the maximum team size, those competing as individuals should be identified appropriately. d) When arriving at the judges' table coaches should notify the judges of the order of work on that particular apparatus. e) Gymnasts can compete in a different order on each apparatus, but must adhere to the order as notified to the judges. 4.5 COMPETITION ASSISTANCE a) Clubs are required to assist with the set down of the gym at the conclusion of each competition. 4.6 COMPETITION SESSION TIMES a) Session times for Interclub events scheduled for Friday nights will be as follows: General Warm Up 6.00pm Apparatus Warm Up 6.30pm Competition 7.30pm (note that a one touch warm up will also apply at apparatus for Friday night competitions) b) Session times for Interclub events scheduled for Saturday mornings will be as follows: General Warm Up 9.00pm Competition 9.30pm c) Session times for Interclub events scheduled for Saturday afternoons will be as follows: General Warm Up 12.30pm Competition 1.00pm d) Session times for Invitational Championships and Teams Challenge will be as for Interclubs. e) Session Times for Championship events will be advertised independently. f) Any changes to session times for a competition will be communicated to clubs in advance of the competition. 4.7 NOMINATED JUDGES AT COMPETITIONS a) Clubs must be represented by at least one suitably accredited and active judge at any GSA Men s Artistic Gymnastics event in which gymnasts from that club are entered. b) If a club does not provide a suitably accredited and active judge for a GSA Gymnastic event in which it has a gymnast(s) competing, entry fees for its gymnasts will include a 50% penalty. c) Penalties applied under this clause may be reduced or withheld at the discretion of the MAG SMC. 4.8 ACCESS TO COMPETITION FLOOR AREA a) Only appropriately qualified coaches (Level 1 or above), officiating Judges/Jury, Gymnasts, Team Leaders and authorised Competition Personnel are permitted on the competition floor once warm-up has commenced. This ruling applies up until the end of the presentations and 10

11 march off of gymnasts. It is the responsibility of the clubs to pass this information on. The SMC may consider an infringement penalty in the case of clubs not adhering to this ruling. 4.9 ENTRY TO SCORE ROOM a) Only authorised Competition Personnel may access the Score Room during the competition and until the results have been announced COMPETITION ENTRY FEES a) Entry fees are determined by GSA Board and MAG SMC. Refer to SCHEDULE 1 ANNUAL FEES (see page 24) SPECTATOR ENTRY FEES Entry fees are determined by GSA Board and MAG SMC. Refer to SCHEDULE 1 ANNUAL FEES (see page 24) AGE FOR COMPETITIONS The age of the gymnast is taken as at 1st January in the current year TEAM SIZES AT COMPETITIONS a) The following team size requirements apply for team awards at competitions. LEVELS MINIMUM MAXIMUM SCORES TO COUNT 1 to b) There is no restriction to the number of gymnasts that a club may enter in any level. However, only one team per club per level may be entered. Where the number of gymnasts entered by a club exceeds the maximum number for a team, the entry form must indicate which of the gymnasts form the team and which will compete as individuals. c) On any apparatus, the team score will be determined by the applicable number of scores to count. The total of the highest 3 scores will form the team s score for that apparatus. d) The team s all around score will be the total of its apparatus scores on each apparatus PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO RECORDING AT COMPETITIONS a) This clause covers each competition session from the commencement of warm-up until the formal close of the session. b) Photography and video recording on the competition area is forbidden, other than by official photographers or video operators who have formal approval from the MAG SMC. Photographs and videos may be taken from spectator areas (stands). c) For safety reasons, flash photography and additional lights for video recording are forbidden during competitions. The lighting in the competition area is adequate for most cameras. This clause also covers camera or video lights associated with red-eye reduction or other camera functions. Cameras or video recorders may be used if these lights are covered completely. d) Officials or representatives of a club may not photograph nor video gymnasts from other clubs during the competition, unless they receive permission from the gymnast s club, parent or legal guardian. 11

12 4.15 AWARDS a) Bruce Edwards Award The Bruce Edwards Award commemorates the legacy of Bruce Edwards to gymnastics and particularly to men s gymnastics in South Australia. The award aims to encourage clubs to participate as broadly as possible at all MAG events. Points are awarded to clubs at every GSA interclub and championship event through the year. The club with the highest aggregate at the end of the year will receive the Bruce Edwards Award. Points are awarded as follow: Levels 1 to 4 Levels 5 and 6 3 points to the club of each 1 st placed gymnast 5 points to the club of each 1 st placed gymnast 2 points to the club of each 2 nd placed gymnast 3 points to the club of each 2 nd placed gymnast 1 point to the club of each 3 rd placed gymnast 1 point to the club of each 3 rd placed gymnast 1 point to the club of each gymnast successfully upgrading 1 point to the club of each gymnast successfully upgrading 1 point for each team (equivalent) competing 1 point for each team (equivalent) competing Judges 3 points for each accredited or junior judge representing the club at any session of an eligible competition. Each accredited judge will nominate one club to whom all points from that judge s participation will be assigned for the entire year. Excellence Awards Clubs will be awarded 3 Points (Gold), 2 Points (Silver) & 1 Point (Bronze) for any gymnasts receiving a certificate of excellence in levels 1 thru 5. The GSA High Performance Program (GymJETS) is ineligible for the Bruce Edwards Award. Gymnasts competing for GymJETS will earn points for their club of origin. For this purpose, a gymnast s club of origin is the GSA affiliated club: at which the club holds a Multi-club Membership (see Clause 3.1d)), OR otherwise for which the gymnast most recently competed in a GSA competition or sanctioned competition. b) Apparatus medals for placegetters and trophies for All Around placegetters will be presented at the State Championships. c) Apparatus medals for placegetters and trophies for All Around placegetters will be presented at the All Around Invitational Championships. d) All Around trophies will be presented to placed teams and medals for individual members of each team placed team at the Teams Challenge. e) Apparatus certificates and All Around certificates will be presented to individual placegetters at Interclub events for Levels 3 and above. f) Achievement ribbons and participation certificates will be presented to all individual participants at Interclub events, for Levels 1 and 2. Achievement thresholds for these awards are provided in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS. 12

13 g) Placegetters awards will be presented to gymnasts or teams placing 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd in the relevant category as appropriate to the competition (see clauses 4.15b), c), d) and e) above). h) An individual gymnast must at least have achieved the minimum apparatus qualifying score for the level in which he has competed, to be eligible to receive 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd place on that apparatus at any GSA competition. See Schedule 2 for details of apparatus qualifying marks for each level. i) An individual gymnast must at least have achieved the minimum All Around qualification mark for the level in which he has competed, to be eligible to receive 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd place All Around at any GSA competition. See Schedule 2 for details of apparatus qualifying marks for each level. j) Upgrade badges will be presented to gymnasts who upgrade to a new level at a GSA competition. See clause 6b) for upgrading requirements. k) Certificates of Excellence will be presented at ALL competitions for Levels 3 to 6 and at Championships for Levels 1 and 2. They are awarded to gymnasts who satisfy minimum overall score requirements and also meet the recommended under-age requirements set out in Article 6.c. Gold Certificate Silver Certificate For an overall score of 90% of the start values of routines in their level, with full bonus content, if applicable. For an overall score of 87.5% of the start values of routines in their level, with full bonus content, if applicable. Bronze Certificate For an overall score of 85% of the start values of routines in their level, with full bonus content, if applicable. 13

14 5. JUDGING 5.1 CLUB OBLIGATION a) Any club wishing to compete in an Interclub or Championship event must supply at least one judge for a competition in which it has a gymnast competing. See clause 4.7. Note that any person who has commenced a Judges' Accreditation course will be considered eligible as a club's representative and will satisfy the requirement to supply a judge if assisting at a competition, either as a judge or in another capacity (such as Competition Director or Score Room). Junior judges will also satisfy a club s obligation. Note also that any judge nominated by a club will be allocated a role determined by the MAG SMC. 5.2 WHO MAY JUDGE? a) Any person over the age of 16 may successfully complete a judges course and be entitled to judge at competition. b) Gymnasts or ex-gymnasts aged 14 or 15 will also be encouraged to participate in judges courses and assume a role as a junior judge (i.e., trainee judge). A candidate not yet 16 years of age who successfully completes a judges course in the year in which he or she will turn 16 will be deemed to be fully accredited at the relevant level when he or she turns 16. Qualified Junior Judges can only judge on a panel under a fully accredited judge and only at levels 1 to 6. c) Coaches and senior gymnasts are always encouraged to attend judges courses, either as observers or as candidates. d) It is the policy of the MAG SMC to foster senior gymnasts into the ranks of judges and to encourage senior gymnasts to judge at lower levels. Judges with an active gymnastic background will always be a technical asset to the judging fraternity. 5.3 JUDGING PROTOCOLS a) The MAG State Judging Co-ordinator will prepare the judging allocations prior to each competition and will notify the judges concerned by letter of the allocation at least one week before the competition. b) Judges unable to attend a particular competition should notify the MAG State Judging Co-ordinator either by letter or phone with maximum notice. c) Judges must arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. The judges briefing will take place 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. d) Judges must sign an attendance register on arrival at the competition venue. e) Head Judges (or any judge who will be solely responsible for an apparatus) should inspect the apparatus for which they are responsible and ensure as well as is practicable that the apparatus has been erected correctly and is in a safe state. f) Where possible, judges should endeavour to observe warm-ups so as to familiarise themselves with the work that they are to judge. g) Judges must be seated at their respective apparatus ten minutes before the start of the competition. h) Judges should make themselves available for discussion at any post-competition "debriefs" immediately after a competition. 14

15 i) Judges should familiarise themselves with the various interpretations (with regard to compulsory exercises or optional routine requirements) that the MAG SMC has resolved. j) Judges must be members of Gymnastics SA and will automatically be deemed members of the Judges Association. k) As representatives of Men s Artistic Gymnastics on a public stage, judges are reminded of the Judges Code of Ethics, contained in the GA Technical member s Handbook (available at As stated in that code, judges are expected to dress in a tidy fashion befitting the status and image of a judge appropriately when judging at GSA competitions. In addition, for State Championships, accredited judges are expected to wear a white or light coloured, tailored shirt, navy jacket, grey trousers or grey/navy skirt (female judges) and a matching tie (male judges). Junior Judges who judge at State Championships are not required to wear a jacket and tie but may do so if they so wish. 5.4 JUDGES COURSES a) Males and females may attend the courses. b) The minimum age for full accreditation is 16 years. See clause ACCREDITATION LEVELS Judges at the respective levels will meet the following requirements. BEGINNER a) Attend all parts of the Beginner course as notified. b) Satisfy the course requirements. c) Execution judge for Levels 1 and 2 compulsories. d) Own a copy of the MAG National Program DVD and Judges Manual INTERMEDIATE a) Attend all parts of the Intermediate course as notified. b) Satisfy the course requirements. c) Difficulty judge for Levels 1 and 2 compulsories d) Execution judge for Levels 1 to 6 compulsories. e) Own a copy of the MAG National Program DVD and Judges Manual. INTERMEDIATE BRONZE a) Attend all parts of the Intermediate Bronze course as notified. b) Satisfy the course requirements. c) Difficulty judge for Level 1 to 6 compulsories. d) Execution judge for Levels 1 to 6 compulsories and Level 7 to 9 optionals. e) Own a copy of the MAG National Program DVD and Judges Manual. 15

16 ADVANCED a) Attend all parts of the Advanced course as notified. b) Satisfy the course requirements. c) Difficulty and execution judge for optionals and compulsories up to and including Level 9 (ALP and IDP). d) Own a copy of the MAG National Program DVD, Judges Manual and the FIG Code of Points. ADVANCED SILVER a) Attend all parts of the Advanced Silver course as notified. b) Satisfy the course requirements. c) Difficulty and execution judge for optionals and compulsories routines up to and including Level 10 (ALP) and Senior (IDP). d) Own a copy of the MAG National Program DVD, Judges Manual and the FIG Code of Points. 5.6 JUDGING NATIONAL EVENTS a) Judges wishing to represent South Australia at an MAG Australian Championship event should have a detailed understanding of the requirements for optional routines at levels 7 to 10 and also be familiar with any special rulings and modifications pertaining to these levels. Judges will need to be currently accredited Advanced Judges and must also be currently registered with Gymnastics Australia. 5.7 PAYMENT FOR JUDGES a) Accredited and registered judges who judge at GSA competitions will be entitled to re-imbursement for their time and costs of participation. Each judge will be reimbursed $10.00 per session at which they judge, for eligible GSA competitions (see clause 6.1 for eligible GSA competitions). b) Judges will need to be both accredited and registered with Gymnastics Australia in order to receive payment. c) Judges will need to register their participation as a judge on the Event Sign-in Sheet at each session in which they judge. Payments will be made only to the judges recorded on each session s Sign-in Sheet. d) Judges will need to complete and provide to GSA any forms required by the Australian Taxation Office before payment will be made. e) Each judge will receive a single payment covering all competitions for the current year, following the completion of the last eligible competition for that year. 16

17 6. COMPETITION STRUCTURE a) Unless otherwise specified herein, men s competitions adhere to the provisions of the MAG National Program. There is a National Program Resource DVD available from Gymnastics Australia, which contains all technical information relevant to men s competition in this country including video examples of compulsory routines on all apparatus at all levels relevant to compulsory routines. b) There are two recognised streams, ALP (Levels) and the International Development Program (IDP). Its underage requirements and higher qualifying score define the IDP. Gymnasts competing in the IDP must satisfy the nationally recommended age categories. Gymnasts competing in the ALP will have satisfactorily upgraded to a new level when they have achieved the pass marks specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS (see page 26). c) Competitions will comprise the following divisions: Level 1 Under 7 Level 2 Under 8 Level 3 Under 9 Level 4 Under 10 Level 5 Under 11 Level 1 Open Level 2 Open Level 3 Open Level 4 Open Level 5 Open - Level 6 Open Level 7 Under 12 Level 8 Under 14 Level 9 Under 15 Level 9 Under 17 Level 7 Open Level 8 Open Level 9 Open Level 10 Senior International Gymnast s age for determining eligibility for under age divisions will be determined as specified in Clause Under age gymnasts are also eligible for open divisions. A gymnast may compete in only one division at a given competition. d) Gymnasts competing in the ALP at Levels 7 or higher will present optional routines according to the requirements of the MAG National Program. Again they will have satisfactorily upgraded to Level 7 when they have achieved the pass marks specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS (see page 26). At Level 7, children turning 12 in the year of competition or younger may compete in an Under 14 division. Gymnasts older than this at Level 7 will compete in an Open division. The remaining levels within the ALP have no under age requirement. The over-riding criterion will be the gymnast s own ability level. 17

18 e) Level 7 gymnasts competing in the IDP will continue to present prescribed Compulsory routines and must be under the age of 12 or turning 12 in the year of competition. The qualifying score will be as specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS (see page 26). f) Level 9 gymnasts competing in the IDP will present Optional routines according to the requirements of Level 9 in the MAG National Program and must meet the age requirements specified in the GA MAG Gymsport Technical Regulations Part B Technical Regulations. The qualifying score will be as specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS (see page 26). g) Level 10 gymnasts competing in the IDP will present Optional routines according to full international requirements. The qualifying score will be as specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS (see page 26). h) Gymnasts are entitled to a Levels Badge when they successfully upgrade to a new level by scoring the applicable pass marks or better, in competition. The appropriate box on the competition entry form should be checked to indicate a gymnast who will be performing at a level at which he has not previously qualified. i) Gymnasts may receive their Levels Badge once only for each level up to Level 6. Coaches should not check the Upgrading box on every entry in order to receive the same levels badge after the award has been achieved. j) The competition structure commences with Level 1. Older gymnasts entering the system are not required to commence at Level 1, although this is possible. For developmental and safety reasons, gymnasts may not enter the system at a level above their age-eligibility. From there, they may progress sequentially (i.e. move up one level at a time). A gymnast wishing to skip a level may petition the MAG SMC to do so. MAG SMC will consider each such petition on a case by case basis. Note that a gymnast may not skip a level for which they are age eligible. The following table shows the highest level at which a gymnast may enter the system according to age: Age at 1 January Highest allowed starting level Under 7 Level 2 7 years Level 3 8 years Level 4 9 years Level 5 10 to 11 years Level 7 12 to 13 years Level 8 14 to 16 years Level 9 17 years or older No restriction k) Once the gymnast achieves the qualification score in a particular level, he may continue to compete at that level OR he may attempt to upgrade to the next higher level. l) A Compulsory Upgrade provision exists under the following circumstances: The gymnast competes in Level 1 to 5 at a Championship Event (i.e. State Championships or Invitational Championships) and is older than the recommended age requirements for his particular level), and 18

19 Achieves an overall score of 90% of the start value of the routines at his level, with full bonus content, if applicable. The following table shows the age requirements and compulsory upgrade scores for Levels 1 to 5: Age at 1 January Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Level 5 7 or older 8 or older 9 or older 10 or older 11 or older Compulsory upgrade score In this situation, the gymnast must normally move up one level by the first MAG event of any type in the following year. The gymnast s club or coach may petition the MAG SMC to vary this rule. MAG SMC will consider each such petition on a case by case basis. 6.1 GSA COMPETITIONS a) GSA Competitions will be conducted from Level 1 upwards. b) There will be at least one Interclub event and a State Championship in the first half of the year and in the second half of the year there will be at least a further one Interclub event as well as a Teams Challenge and an All Around Invitational Championship. 19

20 7. ELIGIBILITY / QUALIFICATION 7.1 ALL EVENTS a) Levels 1-10: Gymnasts may compete at any level at an MAG event, restricted only by the requirements of these regulations and the requirement that a gymnast may not compete in more than one level at any one event. b) Gymnasts may not downgrade from one event to another in a given year. A gymnast who has qualified at a particular level in the preceding year and wishes to compete in a lower level in the current year must apply to the MAG SMC for approval to do so. MAG SMC will consider each such petition on a case by case basis. c) To be eligible for the All Around places, gymnasts must compete on all apparatus at their selected level. d) Individual apparatus competitors may nominate to enter an MAG event as apparatus specialists. The MAG SMC will accept these nominations provided the gymnast has achieved a minimum pass mark for each apparatus concerned. That pass mark must have been achieved in an interclub event, championship event, Teams Challenge or other sanctioned event. The individual apparatus pass mark requirements for apparatus specialists are shown in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS page 26 of these regulations. 7.2 CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS a) For Levels 6 to 10, gymnasts must have achieved a qualification score (as set out in Schedule 2) for the level in which they wish to compete at a championship, prior to that championship event. That qualification score must have been achieved at a sanctioned event in the current calendar year (i.e., after January 1). This rule does not apply for gymnasts competing in Levels 1 to 5. Gymnasts competing in Levels 1 to 5 may upgrade at a championship event. b) For Levels 6 to 10, a gymnast seeking to compete at a championship event in a level at which he has not yet qualified in accordance with Clause 7.2 a) may petition the MAG SMC for permission to compete at that level. That petition must be received no later than the closing date for entries for that event. If MAG SMC grants the petition, the gymnast will be allowed to compete in the requested level. MAG SMC will consider each such petition on a case by case basis. c) For the purposes of these regulations, championship events comprise the MAG State Championships and the MAG Invitational Championships. 20

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS - STATE TEAM SELECTION 8.1 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS ATHLETES a) The gymnast must at some stage in the current year have achieved the applicable qualification marks as specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS (see page 27) before a suitably qualified judge or panel of judges. b) The gymnast must achieve, at one of the designated qualification events, the applicable qualification marks as specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS 2 before a suitably qualified judge or panel of judges. Alternative procedures in the case of injury or other mitigating circumstances are outlined below. c) A gymnast seeking IDP eligibility must also be under the prescribed age limit for the particular age grade, on January 1 of the relevant year. The age grades are as specified in the GA MAG Gymsport Technical Commission Technical Regulations Part B. 8.2 STATE SELECTION PROCESS ATHLETES Once a gymnast has satisfied the minimum eligibility criteria to be considered for selection into the State Team, the following processes will apply. a) The Selection Panel will for the purpose of the State Levels Team consist of the Chairman of the MAG SMC, the State Coach and the State Judging co-ordinator. The Selection Panel for the purpose of the State Élite Team will consist of the Chairman of the MAG SMC, the High Performance Program Head Coach and the State Judging Co-ordinator. b) The Selection Panels will consider candidates for state selection along the criteria set and then put forward their selections to the SMC for ratification. c) Gymnastics Australia requires entries for National events by a specified deadline prior to the event, accompanied by a generally non-redeemable entry fee. State selection must therefore be finalised with adequate time to allow for the entries to be forwarded by the deadline. d) A State Selection Trial will be scheduled as late as possible prior to the deadline for lodgement of entries for a national event but still allowing for selections to be properly considered and ratified. All gymnasts wishing to gain selection to the state team must compete in the State Selection Trial. e) The MAG SMC will ensure that the candidates for State Team selection are evaluated by a suitable panel of judges in order to ensure that the scores arrived at correctly indicate the gymnasts' standard for a national event. f) The Selection Panel will consider the results from State Championships, an Interclub event and a further controlled event (the selection trial) in submitting their recommendations for the State Team to the MAG SMC. In their considerations, the State Championships will carry greater weight than the other events. Gymnasts competing in the International and ALPs must have achieved the applicable qualification marks as specified in SCHEDULE 2 QUALIFICATION MARKS (see page 27) at one or more of these events for selection to attend the Australian Championships. g) The Selection Panel has the authority to consider scores exceeding the above requirements achieved in other events in the current year should a gymnast fail to achieve the qualifying score at the selection trials. h) The Selection Panel also has the right to consider other, relevant factors when deciding a gymnast s suitability to represent South Australia in the State team. These factors will include participation in designated State training sessions and overall behaviour as well as attitude towards coaches and fellow team candidates. These factors are not an exhaustive list. 21
