President s Thoughts Hello all, I hope everyone had a Happy New Year and a festive Christmas/Holiday season with family and friends! WELCOME TO THE 40 TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE MIAMI VALLEY FLY FISHERS The New Year rings with new beginnings, but also, a heartfelt thank you for the leadership and hard work of our past president, Joe Nagel and past Secretary, Matt Mullins. For quite sometime now, Joe has shouldered the responsibility of being the MVFF Tightlines newsletter editor along with his service as both vice president then president for our club during the 2014 season. He was the first face that my wife Karen and I saw at Gear Fest years ago and became the voice of encouragement when he invited us to join the club. His service and dedication are greatly appreciated. Along with new beginnings, club treasurer J.D. Dukes and I would like to welcome newly appointed Secretary Phil Clay and Vice president Scott Davis to the 2015 MVFF board. Scott will also be the new Tightlines Newsletter Editor. (Yes, Scott already knows this and did ask for the responsibility, but just in case, BE WITH HIM FATHER FOR HE KNOWTH NOT WHAT HE HATH SIGNED UP FOR). I appreciate Phil s sense of humor and club history, along with Scott s energy and enthusiasm; we will have a great year. Continued on Page 2

President s Thoughts...Continued from Page 1 I have spoken separately with each board member about service goals and ideas for this year. From a preliminary standpoint, we will start to look for newer ways to incorporate a greater use of social media, even more outreach for fly fishing promotional and teaching activities along with an ambassadorship to other clubs and organizations. We will continue with many of our programs such as Project Healing Waters and I expect we will be seeking greater support from the club members as many of you will be asked to join committees. Please check the newsletter for upcoming events include the ever awesome BUFF show and the Northern Ohio Fly Fishing Expo. Don t forget Jim Corbin s rod building classes along with the fly tying classes at Gander Mountain. The cost of the class is covered by your dues and there is no better way to meet and get to know other club members. Karen reminded me this is also a great way for new members to join as well. MEMBERSHIP REMINDER: The $35.00 fee remains the same. If you have not paid you dues, please try to get them in when you have a chance. There is still plenty of great fishing to be had this time of year. Steelhead Alley, the Mad River and Possum Creek located in Five Rivers Metro Parks are all teaming with trout and/or steelhead. Possum Creek is stocked with rainbow trout the first Friday of every month now through March. I humbly thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president. If you ever have any questions, concerns or just want to go fishing, please call, text or me any time. Be safe and see you January 12 th at the next meeting. 3 This Month s Fly January 2014 Edition FLASHBACK CALLIBAETIS Instructions by Bill Woody Woodward Photograph by Bob Cain Recipe Hook Nymph, size XL Thread.....Olive 6/0 Tail.....Pheasant tail barbs Rib....Fine copper wire Abdomen...Olive marabou Shellback...Pearl Flashabou Thorax...Olive dubbing Legs..Natural CDC Head.Thread 1. Tie-in thread behind hook eye and wrap back to bend making a good thread base. Let the thread hang. 2. Align and cut 4-6 pheasant tail barbs and mount them on top of the hook shank at the hook bend. (The tail should be the length of the hook gap.) Wrap over the butt ends tightly for 6-7 wraps, then trim off the excess butts. Let the thread hang. 3. Cut a 4-5 piece of fine copper wire and tie it in at the end of the tail butts with its length extending back over the hook bend. At this same point, tie-in five strands of flashabou with their length also extending back over the hook bend. Keeping the copper wire, along with the flashabou, on top of the tail butts, wrap the thread back to the hook bend covering them with thread. Let the thread hang. 4. Now tie-in 5-8 marabou barbs by the tips at the tail tie-in point. Trim off any excess tip. At this same point, tie-in a 6 piece of thread. Advance the tying thread to just beyond the midpoint of the hook shank and let it hang. Twist the marabou and thread together to make a marabou rope and wrap it forward to just beyond the midpoint of the hook shank forming a slightly tapered abdomen. Tie the rope off at the end of the abdomen and trim off any excess rope. Let the thread hang. 5. Pull the flashabou forward firmly over the top of the abdomen and tie it off in front of the abdomen. Do not trim the excess flashabou. Now take the copper wire and reverse palmer it over the abdomen in 4-5 evenly spaced concentric wraps and tie it off in front of the abdomen. Trim off any excess rib. Let the thread hang. 6. Fold the flashabou back over the abdomen. Select a CDC feather with barbs slightly longer than the desired length of the finished legs (slightly longer than 1 hook gap). Trim off the fluff at the base of the feather and, holding the feather by the tip, stroke back the barbs on each side to make them perpendicular to the feather shaft. Select a section of the barbs equal to the length of the thorax and strip off the remaining barbs. (By section I mean a part of the feather with barbs on each side of the feather shaft.) Position the feather on top of the hook shank with the dull side facing upward. Bind the feather in by its tip tight against the wing case with the butt end going toward the hook bend. Clip off the excess tip. Wrap the thread back to the end front of the abdomen. 7. Dub the thread with olive dubbing and wrap the dubbed thread up to a point about 5-6 thread wraps behind the hook eye, forming a fairly thick thorax, and tie it off. Remove excess dubbing. (Be sure to wrap the thorax tightly back against the end of the abdomen or a gap may form when the wing case is pulled forward.) Leave the thread at the front of the thorax. 9. Pull the CDC feather over the thorax with enough tension to keep the feather stem positioned on top of and straight down the middle of the thorax. Tie it off with 2-3 turns of thread, binding it to the hook shank. Trim off the excess feather. (You should now have feather barbs on each side of the thorax.) 10. Pull the flashabou wing case forward over the thorax and feather hackle legs and tie it off right behind the hook eye with several tight thread wraps. (To avoid tying down the hackle leg barbs, pinch the barbs against the thorax when you pull the wing case into position so that they remain in position.) Trim off the excess flashabou. (Ensure that the flashabou wing case stays centered on top of the thorax and covers the feather stem.) 11. Form a neat thread head, whip finish, cut the thread, and apply head cement.

The Bamboo Ballad A Multi-Part Article About Bamboo Fly Rods, by MVFF Club Member Jerry Wallace (Part III) The first two installments of the ballad covered the start of my obsession and a little history of bamboo rods. This final installment will cover acquiring a bamboo fly rod. For a modest fee you can take a bamboo rod building class, starting with a culm of bamboo walking out with a fishable rod you have made yourself in a week. If that is a bit much for your skills or beyond your means, a quick search of ebay will typically yield several hundred bamboo rods for sale at prices from $25 to several thousand. You may also get lucky and find some on Craigslist, yard sales and auctions. I say lucky because most of the time what I have found on Craigslist and yard sales are wall hangers; wall hangers are rods that are best suited to hanging on a wall as decoration. I have had my best luck at auctions and on ebay. I prefer auctions but in the last three years I have only been to three, maybe four that were worth the time and effort. At least with an auction you can see and examine the rod and are only bidding against a few people. I have lucked out on some great deals at auctions but they are hard to find. On ebay you can ask questions and look at pictures, but cannot personally examine the rod, plus your competition could reach into the hundreds. I did purchase a rod from ebay once that was mismatched. Indications were good the pieces matched but the ferrules did not. I was able to get a return no problem, just a small hassle. There is also a bidding strategy, bid late and set your max bid to some odd amount a few dollars higher than you want to pay. Be careful, be wary and be patient. It never ceases to amaze me how much $$ some people want for junk bamboo rods, it s a rare classic, an estate find or barn find. A bamboo rod from a modern well known maker could easily run you over a thousand dollars and take several months or longer for them to build and you to acquire it. Many times you will be on a waiting list. Even a used rod from a modern maker can be pricy. Compared to some modern graphite I guess it is not that bad of a price. However, a classic in fishing condition from Heddon, Granger, Phillipson or even some of the top line production rods from South Bend, Montague and Shakespeare can be had relatively cheap and provide an enjoyable experience. It all depends on what you want, how much you can spend and if you have any skills to fix up one that needs some TLC. Things to look for when examining a bamboo rod: 1) How many pieces? Typically they came with 2 tips; it took a long time to get a replacement tip back in the day, hence the normal configuration of two tips. 2) Are all pieces the same length? American built rods normally have pieces of the same length. It is not uncommon for a tip to be an inch or shorter than the other sections indicating it was broken along the way. An inch or two will likely not make much difference, any more than that missing can affect the casting. 3) Are all the threads the same color? If not, the sections may be mismatched or some guides may have been re-wrapped. Are the guides all there? Is the cork in good shape? Is the reel seat functional? What kind of shape is the finish in? 4) Are there any labels or writing on the rod? They are typically found just above the cork handle on the bamboo or on the reel seat. Over the years these markings can disappear by someone refinishing the rod not thinking of identification value down the road. An unmarked rod can be one of the hardest aspects of identifying or valuing a rod. A trained eye (not mine) can narrow down an unmarked rod to the maker based on grip, reel seat, guides, wrap color or style and maybe ferrules. 5) A collector will look for the original rod sock, original tube, 4 pieces (2 tips) and in great condition. The more sought after rods are typically shorter, 8 foot and under. Nice features to have are a sock and tube of some kind, even for non-collectors. I fish all of my bamboo can t afford the collectable ones yet, therefore original rod sock and tube make no difference to me. I do prefer two tips, missing guides or damaged reel seats are easy to replace. Like I said, it all depends on what you want and can afford. Old advertisements (found on ebay) can be a valuable help identify what the old classics were originally built for based on the model# if you have it. For example South Bend rods with two digit numbers were bass rods while 3 digit numbers were trout rods. The model numbers for some Heddon rods equaled the cost Model 20 was $20, Model 30 was $30. Montague and Horrocks Ibbotson made many models and grades. Once you have acquired your classic cane, there are just a few important things to remember to keep your rod in good condition. 1) NEVER twist the ferrules or sections when trying to break down the sections. If they get stuck, put the rod behind your knees and place your hands right on the outside of your knees. Use the strength of your legs to break them apart. 2) To clean the ferrules use rubbing alcohol and q-tips for the female ferrules and 0000 steel wool LIGHTLY on the male ferrules. You will hear many methods to clean or lube the ferrules, the above method has worked well for me. 3) NEVER put your rod away in the tube wet, leave the sock hanging for a bit until the sections are dry. 4) Store the sections in the sock with male ends down 5) As with any rod be careful sliding the rod into the tube not to catch the guides. There is a lot of information on the internet about bamboo rods, modern and classic. Many times a quick google search has identified an off brand rod and also provided me with more knowledge of these ageless classics. For me, going out and fishing a year old bamboo rod, maybe one I have refurbished, and catching a fish with a fly I tied is pretty darn cool.

January 19th, Speaker Continued from Page 1 Ron Lewis - Our own Ron Lewis, will be the speaker for the January 19th meeting. Ron has fished just about, every nook and cranny of the Mad River. Fishing in low and high conditions, using flies ranging the use in nymphs to streamers; even a wide variety of casting techniques. A man, truly and clearly; with a passion for finding big browns on the Mad River. Ron Lewis Auction Continued from page 1 The 2015 Auction will soon be here, so now is the time to begin preparing! The importance of this meeting cannot be stressed enough; the club generates about half of our revenue from this single event, which helps support our speaker program, fly tying classes, and all the other events participated in by the club. Many of our members are familiar with this annual event. For the new members and those not be familiar, here are a few guidelines. As you begin to gather items for donation it is important to remember - NO JUNK. A good rule of thumb is - if you wouldn't pay money for it, most likely no one else will either. Items that sell well are fishing items of course, as well as camping and hunting gear. A sample of your favorite wine or spirits and your favorite patterns of flies are also perennial favorites. If you have received well intentioned gifts that failed to hit the mark, then perhaps this would be the perfect time to recycle that gift and generate some money for the club. This is a great time to go through all of your gear and pull out the stuff you no longer need or use, and bring it to the auction. One man's junk is another man's treasure. If you have a particular skill or a membership to various clubs, these make excellent items for bid. Examples are members who offer guided trips to their favorite body of water, or a half day of fishing or golfing at a private club. These have been very popular in recent years. Whatever it is you can donate to the auction, the most important thing is to make a donation. Secondly, be sure to show up and bid on the items! This would be an excellent meeting to bring a guest or two that have a passion for the sport. They will have an opportunity to pick up many items of good quality at a good price. The more members and guests that show up the more funds will be generated for the club. New Ideas for 2015 After the December meeting, the MVFF Board met to discuss the upcoming year. We wanted to see what we could do / offer our club members to enhance member participation. Here is a list of some of the things we would like to try in 2015: Spring Tune-Up The New TNT We are looking to offer an instructor-led session (possibly in March or April, on a Saturday) to work on casting skills that have not been used since last fall. Our summertime Thursday Night Tease (TNT) sessions have always been a great way to meet up with fellow members outside of our monthly meetings, and to learn about new places to fly fish. Over the last several years, however, the number of these events has greatly decreased. In 2013, we only had two. With our hectic schedules these days, it can be difficult to get volunteers to lead these Thursday night events, even during the summer. So, our proposal for the New TNT is this- Events can be scheduled on ANY day of the week, at ANY time of day, and during ANY time of the year. We want to maximize the opportunity to get out and fish together, and this is a way to do so. We will still utilize the TNT Forum on our message board to coordinate these outings. And, we will still call it TNT - because it s dynamite! More Outings We are looking into the possibility of organizing additional multi-day outings (Kiser Lake, etc.). More information on this will follow when it is available. If you have any ideas on things we can do to enhance club member participation, please contact a board member. We would love to hear your ideas, and we look forward to your help in making them happen!

Out and About. 2 nd Annual DCFF Mystery Fly for Cancer fly fishing tournament ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS! (Submitted by Brian Furderer) In conjunction with Reel Recovery of Kentucky/Indiana, along with the assistance of others, Derby City Fly Fishers (DCFF) hosted our second annual Mystery Fly for Cancer fly fishing tournament which raised over $4,300 for our local KY/IN Reel Recovery organization (25% more than last year). (Reel Recovery is a national non-profit organization that conducts free fly-fishing retreats for men recovering from life-threatening cancer.) This fun fly fishing tournament took place on Saturday, November 8th, 2014, at Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area and by all accounts was a tremendous success. A total of 61 people registered and/or contributed to this worthy event and on the day of the tournament we had 16 teams (32 fishers) competing. This year s Mystery Fly was a size 12 gold bead head Crackleback. The 2014 winning team (partners picked via a blind draw) was the team of Pete Compise (DCFF) and Jim Zimmerman (DCFF). Pete and Jim now have bragging rights, at least until next year, and each got a beautiful hand made engraved plaque evidencing their achievement. Congratulations!! The top 5 individuals that caught the most fish, although there was no prize for such since it was a team effort, were Pete Compise (DCFF), Matthew Clements (DCFF), John Naiser (DCFF), Jim Zimmerman (DCFF) and Krey Keeney (DCFF). Participants and friends came from near and far, including the Dayton OH area (MVFF Miami Valley Fly Fishers), Cincinnati area (NKFF - Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers), Evansville IN, (OVFRC Ohio Valley Fly Rod Club), Frankfort KY, Seymour, Salem & Paoli IN, and of course all of our local DCFF members. Over 20 patrons made this event a weekend trip by spending Friday and/or Saturday night(s) in the bunkhouses at the campground area at Otter Creek Park. Great camaraderie and friendship was shared around the campfire in the evenings and at breakfast. Many event participants were also treated by catching some of the trophy sized rainbow trout that DCFF stocked earlier in the month. In addition to our winners, registrants (who consisted of fishers and volunteer helpers alike) all received very nice door prizes courtesy of Bass Pro, Cabelas, Orvis, TFO or one of the many others of our kind sponsors and donors. Morning coffee was donated by The Shoppes at Otter Creek and after the fishing was done, everyone enjoyed an outstanding BBQ lunch provided by, and with the support of our club favorite Frank s Meat and Produce. Lots of fun was had by all! Derby City Fly Fishers would like to thank Otter Creek Outdoor Recreational Area, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, Meade County KY tourism and all of our sponsors, donors, contributors, participants, and the many volunteers that made this tournament possible and a tremendous success. Please consider supporting this very worth while event next fall and come spend time with fellow fly fishing friends for a fun time of fly fishing, good food, good prizes, and

Yeah, there s an App for that: RIO's Fly Line App If apps are your thing and selecting the right line for your rig isn t, RIO might have the solution. Last week, the Idaho Falls-based company introduced its free Line Selector App, designed to make...the connection to fish come easier for anglers whether it s through its lines, leaders and tippet or through education on the consumer and dealer level. Overall, Fly Line Selector functions the way it s intended. It may not be Simon Gawesworth in your back-pocket, but if you re in the market for RIO lines specific to the rod manufacturers in the app database, the technology works. The issue with simplified cyber-speak, however, is that it won t say how you'll gel in real life. For that kind of compatibility determination, you ll just have to step into the water and really stroke it. Of course, this app is designed to sell RIO fly lines and that s what you ll get. Follow links to the website and buy direct, or hit menu where you ll find a directory of local fly shops. Pros: App is free and user-friendly. Cons: Would benefit from more manufacturers (as well as discontinued rods) added to an updated version. The 2015 Fly Fishing Film Tour is prepped and ready to launch. The schedule is up on THEF3T.com along with the trailers for this year s films.
