Our members have already purchased six (6) lots on Spavinaw Beats I and II. Equity Members have the option to build or to leave their lot undeveloped. Equity Members may also choose to donate a portion of their undeveloped lot to Spring Valley Conservancy for a tax deduction. New Property Update (Vermejo Park Ranch)- We recently acquired access for our members to Ted Turner s Vermejo Park Ranch at an 18% discount. The rate for our members is $350 per day for lodging, meals, fishing and additional amenities. Their normal guest package is $425 per day. Vermejo Park Ranch offers 31 miles of streams and 21 lakes, the ranch is located 40 miles west of Raton, NM. If you would like to schedule a trip to Vermejo Park Ranch please contact Adam. Adam plans to devote the months of June, July and August to expanding the fly fishing and hunting properties of SVA through the addition of trophy trout water and hunting acreage in Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Georgia, Colorado, New Mexico and Montana. Our goal is to purchase or lease as many of these properties as possible by next October. We have had several members fish our Colorado and Wyoming properties recently and reports have been excellent. The properties offer incredible private trout fishing and scenery to match. 2 PAGE 2 Our Vision for 2008: Vision for 2008 Non-Profit Update- We are excited to announce that we are halfway to our goal of raising $200,000 for rehabilitation and restoration of fish and wildlife habitat. Due to the overwhelming generosity of the finest members on the planet, the members of SVA, we are beginning to see the vision of Spring Valley Conservancy come to fruition. We are sincerely grateful that our members share in our vision of conservation. If you would like more detailed information on Spring Valley Conservancy or would like to make a donation please contact Adam. Future Properties We have identified no less than 8 fly fishing and hunting properties in Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Georgia, Colorado, New Mexico and Montana that we plan to purchase or lease. Our goal will be to have most of these properties secured by Fall of 2008, just in time for the upcoming fishing and hunting seasons. The addition of these properties along with our Spring Ridge Club partnership will more than double the amount of water that our members can fish and hunt.

4 PAGE 4 Intern Knowledge Layering In order to make the most out of your fishing trip, it is important to have the proper layering. The technology that has been developed for modern day fabrics have come a long way from wool sweaters and neoprene waders. There are several steps in proper layering techniques that I will discuss. The first step is your base layer. This is the layer that is next to your skin and will wick the moisture from your body to the outside layer. It will be made from synthetic material, will be tight fitting and have stretch material so it can move with your body. A great example of this is Simms WaderWick tops and bottoms. Next is your midlayer. This is the layer that will create and maintain warmth. The best fabric is a high quality fleece. Here is a good place to mention that in the case of layering, money does by quality. It is far too often that I have seen a cotton sweatshirt referred to as fleece. This doesn t mean that you have to purchase the most expensive gear, but buy the best of what you can afford. Fleece retains up to about 90% of its warmth when wet, which in our case is very important. It is fast drying and easily packable, and very breathable. There are a lot of outdoor companies that create a good quality fleece such as The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, Simms, etc. I personally recommend the Cloudveil Neve ½ Zip Fleece on top and the Simms Guide Fleece Pant to keep your legs warm. In extremely cold conditions you might want to add a vest on top of your mid layer. I personally enjoy the properties of windproof material, but a good quality fleece vest will do the trick. I use the Simms Windstopper Vest, which is perfect as an additional layer or for those cool fall mornings on its own as well. The final layer is your shell. Here I am referring to the jacket & waders. Breathability is key here, just as every other part of layering, but is often overlooked in this area. When referring to breathable, I am referring to the ability of a fabric to dry itself out, and in the case of wind/waterproof fabrics to block out the elements and allow moisture to escape. The best fabric in this category is Gore-Tex, but many other knock-offs are out there that will perform comparably, as long as they come from quality manufacturers. As far as jackets & waders are concerned, Simms has a lot to offer to meet an individual s budget and needs. Cloudveil also offers a top quality jacket, the 8x Pro Jacket.

5 VOLUME I ISSUE X PAGE 5 Intern Knowledge (Continued) A material that is becoming increasing popular is Softshell technology. It is somewhat stretchy and will block out the wind, creating a great final layer of warmth, and will repel water. This fabric in no means is waterproof and would not be suitable in a rain shower, but at the same time will keep from getting wet in a light snow or if you get splashed. I wear a Softshell almost all winter, unless I am expecting a heavy rain or snow. Again, refer to the Simms website for several products they offer. Gloves, Hats, & Socks are another key aspect in keeping you warm during foul weather conditions. I will always wear a hat and thick socks in the winter. You want to make sure your hat is a quality fleece material and having Windstopper is a nice addition. To keep your feet warm, the Simms ExStream Socks will do the trick. I have a pair of winter wading boots 2 sizes larger than my normal boot size so on those extreme January mornings I can either wear two pairs of socks, or often a liner sock. The liner sock is like the baselayer for your feet, a thin synthetic material to go under the heavy weight sock. Check out Simms WaderWick Liner Socks. Gloves are hard for us fly-fishers for the obvious reason; our hands are always wet and gloves can take away that special touch we feel when a bow eats that size 22 midge. This is the one area I have used wool for several years. Wool is a great natural material and retains about 60% of its warmth when wet, but recently I have switched over to Simms Windstopper Half Finger Gloves because of the wind properties, and they don t itch near as much. Since summer is upon us, there are a few key features I look for in warm weather fishing clothing. First off, I rarely wear material that does not have UPF protection. The material must also be quick drying and lightweight. Check out Simms Sportswear for more ideas. When wearing sunscreen in the summer you have to be careful because some chemicals will damage a fly line. Simms makes a quality Sunscreen Lotion that is fast drying, waterproof, and lightweight. 6 PAGE 6 SVA News SVA Employee of the Month- We are excited to announce that Sage, SVA s Head Guide, Manager and Fly Shop dog was named Employee of the Month. He put forth extra effort in May by only sleeping 16 hours a day instead of his usual 20 hour daily slumber, he also did not destroy any valuable SVA inventory SVA Fly Fishing Schools There are 2 schools remaining for this summer for our members and their guests that are interested in fine tuning their skills. The dates are June 28th and 29th. They will take place in Tulsa and will be two separate full day events. You will learn how to cast more accurately and with greater distance, how to tie stronger knots, what flies to use and when to use them and many other essentials to fly fishing. With a 2 to 1 Participant to Pro Staff ratio, each participant will receive instruction specific to their individual skill level. The cost of the school is $395 per person. New Website Our new website is complete, we hope that you enjoy it. The Members-Only section can be accessed by going to the Membership Link. The video reels section will allow you to experience a taste of our destination trips if you are unable to go. Our next project will be to completely overhaul the Members Only site followed by the addition of an Online Fly Shop and Member Marketplace. New SVA Fly Shop The Fly Shop has moved to the rent house on Beat 3. If you are fishing the Spavinaw beats please come by the shop to check in and get an up to date fishing report. SVA Staff and Summer Interns Phil and Sage continue to make Adam look good despite his best attempts to thwart their efforts. Our interns have been molded into finely tuned Machines; Boone and Chase have been invaluable through their help with guide trips, day to day activities and in boosting moral. Jeremy, our web design intern, is worth his weight in gold as evidenced by our new website. Product Spotlight Simms GORE-TEX Paclite Jacket- With all the recent rain we ve had, we decided to tune you into the finest rain jacket on the market today. The Simms GORE-TEX Paclite Jacket is designed for those who like to travel light and fast. It features a self contained stuff pocket and takes up very little space. Its enhanced breathability allows perspiration to escape while simultaneously wicking away moisture. There are two hand pockets and a chest pocket with waterproof zipper seals. We have seen prolific numbers of large fish taken lately on the Spavinaw, Beaty and Chimney Rock properties. One upside to the rainfall is a newly structured stream which offers new holding water and different fishing tactics and techniques. Big and bigger seems to be the way to go when attempting to fool the monsters on the Spavinaw. For Dry Fly enthusiasts big terrestrials and stimulators have been deadly. Streamers in black, white, natural, and olive along with huge crayfish patterns have also proven to be extremely effective.
