Not sure if he will bring extra eggs with him. Make sure to order by sending an to Renee Johnson by Oct 10. renee.nwsteelheader@outlook.com As everyone that attended the meeting Sept 8 knows Sean and Renee resigned as Newberg Chapter President. Sean s dad has been very sick and they need to focus on taking care of him. Plus both of their jobs have become more demanding of their time. We would all like to thank Sean and Renee for all the good things they have done. All the raffle items they got from sponsors. Leading our chapter from June and Sept. Plus the chapter fishing trip bank fishing for Coho near Hammond, Oregon. Hopefully they will stay active as they possibly can with the Newberg Chapter. The bank fishing Saturday September 12 wasn t very good at all. The weather changed and became very foggy. Sean said a red algae moved in along the bank and the salmon avoid it. Sean said that everyone that participated had a really good time even with no fish. Ty Campsey showed up Friday and stayed over night. Ty assisted Sean and Renee with getting spots for chapter members early Saturday morning to fish from the bank. Saturday was not a good day fishing but Ty spent time fishing Friday and got a really nice Hatchery Coho. Ty and his family made a number of trips fishing from the bank and did really well. We would like to thank Ty Campsey for volunteering for the Newberg Chapter President. The chapter board will meet at 6:00 pm before the regular meeting Oct 13 to vote and approve Ty for this position. As of this newsletter don t know of anyone else volunteering. Ty will need everyone s help to make his experience as president good and memorable. Hatchery fish are adipose fin clipped and coded wire tagged before release. The recovery of these fish in the commercial and sport fisheries in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon along with recoveries at the hatchery and on the spawning grounds are used to represent the harvest rate of Oregon s coastal fall Chinook. Data collected is used in Pacific Salmon Treaty negotiations that can have a significant effect on Oregon s Chinook salmon populations. The Salmon River Hatchery releases 200,000 fall Chinook each year to support the popular in-river recreational fishery and supplement ocean fisheries. Because of staff reductions, ODFW is looking for volunteers to help with the spawning of returning hatchery Chinook. Coho fishing Above Willamette Falls: We might get a mediocre run this year. We need rain but Coho are already in the Willamette River. Haven t heard any reports from locals. Check fish counts over Willamette Falls for latest Coho count: Yakima Bait Company Flash Glo UV Squid Spinner Casting Model Flash Glo UV Squid Spinner Trolling Model (not weighted) Blue Fox Spinners These produce well on the Willamette River for Coho. No need for light line these fish aren t leader shy. Plus there is a lot of wood in the river. Use Size 5 cast or troll Brad s Wiggle Wart s Chart of Colors Here are some good Coho colors. Also red and chartreuse are good colors to try. Tip troll spinners down river and Wiggle Warts up river. Experiment a little. *Use a Duo lock snap on leader to change out lures fast. Make sure to use chain or barrel swivel on end that attaches to main line. Make sure plugs dive straight down not go to one side. Web Links of Interest: Fishing the river above Rogers Landing requires a boat. Mark Grier spent time last year trying to find bank access and that was pretty much not happening. There are a few areas to fish from the bank all on private land. Coho adults and jacks already in the river will likely hold in the deep channels waiting for rain. Once we get a big rain they will disappear into the Yamhill River tributaries. Knot Tying examples. You can check past newsletters, links to Association webpage join and donate links: Volunteers will learn how to: Net, handle, and identify Salmonoid species Spawn fish to meet egg take goals Wand and mark fish for research purposes Process fish for Food Share and nutrient enrichment Assist with other hatchery operations as needed There will be five or more volunteer positions most days, Monday through Friday from early October through the end of November. Full or half day shifts are available. Much of the volunteer work is physically demanding, but there are opportunities for light work including data recording, spawning assistance, and bagging/processing snouts. We are expecting a lot of fish to come back and are actively looking for volunteers to go and help us out at that hatchery, Spangler said. Owin was afraid of making a lot of people angry with him discussing this very effective setup. The word is getting out and more people will be trying this method of trolling for Columbia River Fall Chinook. This method has been used in the upper Columbia River for a while.
