C O N S E R V E, P R O T E C T, R E S T O R E Quarter 3, 2011 President s Piece The stated mission of Trout Unlimited is to Conserve, protect and restore North America s cold-water fisheries and their watersheds. TU s positive impact on the environment, and the sport of fly fishing is most impressive when you consider TU s nonprofit status, which hasn t held the organization back from becoming one of the country s largest and most active coldwater conservation and restoration organizations. The objective and goal of the Cheyenne Mountain Chapter is to implement TU s mission at a local grassroots level through habitat conservation and restoration projects, education programs, building partnerships with stakeholders and interfacing with the general public. As President of CMCTU, I have been charged with the task of ensuring we have the resources to implement our objectives and goals. Aside from a great volunteer base of members, our habitat conservation and restoration projects and Pikes Peak Brewing Company s co-founders Chris Wright and Dan York with CMCTU s Allyn Kratz and Erik Heikkenen Project. Through this grant program, CMCTU was awarded $3,000 to help fund our conservation and restoration projects. The other exciting opportunity came from newly opened Pikes Peak Brewing Company in Monument, CO. Working closely with co-founders Chris Wright and Dan York, CMCTU forged a marketing partnership and developed a craft beer brewed Brewing Company, I took to heart Section 6 and 6.1 of the Greenback Cutthroat Trout Recovery Plan which both address fundraising for the recovery plan. Section 6 states agencies should promote partnerships with conservation groups and explore alternative management and funding strategies. While Section 6.1 directs agencies to increase As President of CMCTU, I have been charged with the task of ensuring we have the resources to implement our objectives and goals. Oddly enough two very unique fundraising opportunities presented themselves to me this year, both involving Colorado breweries. Earlier this summer CMCTU participated in the AC Golden Brewing Company s Colorado Native Community Reinvestment specifically for our Chapter: Bear Creek Porter! Chris and Dan have graciously volunteered to donate 5% of the revenue generated from the sale of Bear Creek Porter to help CMCTU s efforts to protect the threatened Greenback Cutthroat Trout and its habitats here in the Pikes Peak Region. During my proposal and presentation to Pikes Peak the use of non-traditional agency funds and private funds and explore opportunities to increase funds available for completion of Greenback recovery programs by using non-traditional or private sources Although the Greenback Cutthroat Trout Recovery Plan was written for local, state and federal agencies as a guideline to effectuate the (cont. on p.3) Buffalo Creek Ranch SWA Fencing Project Wrap-Up CMCTU Committees Now Forming A Message from a CMCTU Member Across the Pond Adult Fly Fishing School 12 Winding River Ranch Hires Local Guide Favorite 14

President s Piece (continued from p. 1) protection, conservation and restoration of the Greenbacks and their habitats, I believe the recovery plan should be used by conservation organizations (e.g., TU and CMCTU) to develop Greenback recovery and restoration strategies parallel to and with local, state and federal agencies which is exactly what I had in mind. My belief and perspective was confirmed when I notice a founding member of CMCTU, Leo Pit Bull Gomolchak, assisted with the creation of the Greenback Cutthroat Trout Recovery Plan and is the one of first non-governmental individuals listed under the acknowledgments, second only to Dr. Robert Behnke. On the following pages you will find a series of photographs of me, Allyn Kratz, Sean Kratz, and Pikes Peak Brewing Company s Chris Wright and Dan York visiting Bear Creek and brewing Bear Creek Porter. What an exciting day it was for me, Allyn and Sean, all home brewers, to brew beer on such a large scale! Word from Pikes Peak Brewing Company s Brewmaster, CMCTU s Bear Creek Porter will be available on Saturday, September 17! As such, we have scheduled a Bear Creek Porter launch celebration at the brewery. I hope many of you will consider attending the launch celebration and raise a pint to the protection of the Greenback and its habitats! The partnership between CMCTU and Pikes Peak Brewing Company has great potential to broaden and raise awareness of the threatened Greenback and its habitats with the general public, as well as promote TU and CMCTU mission. Cheers! Erik J. Heikkenen, President erik_heikkenen@cmctu.org The Bear Creek Porter label... 4 Meet Your New CMCTU Board Members... Steven Gullette, Treasurer Steven first started fishing for trout in the North Platte River watershed around Casper, Wyoming in the mid-1950s. Spending much of his Wonder Bread Years in Wyoming, with detours in and out of Colorado, Idaho, and New Mexico to name a few, he became a hard-core fisher at an early age. He pursued trout whenever he could including during a stint of 23 years in the Navy. Panfish have long held a special place in his heart purely for the fun aspect of it, although fishing still waters still presents him with problems since he never really figured out how to find fish in water that isn t moving. In short, the pursuit of trout in creeks, streams, and rivers is an obsession. His brother introduced him to fly fishing in 1999 and Steven hasn t been quite the same since. That first year was marked by world-class wind knots, always making sure he had at least three or four spare leaders with him when he went fishing, and enough encounters with gullible (or sympathetic?) fish to keep him coming back for more. While he still owns, uses and enjoys spinning outfits, even carrying some ultralight spinning gear in his truck just in case, working to improve his craft as a fly fisher in an ongoing pursuit. His interest in helping preserve and protect trout waters lead him to joining TU in Steven lives in Monument with D his fishing-fool-tolerant spouse. He has successfully avoided having a real Jay-Oh-Bee for going on four years after having retired three times previously. Maybe this time it will stick. He does revisit the world of work each year during tax season as a paid preparer to support his fishing and road trip habits. A member of Habitat for Humanity International s RV Care-A-Vanner group, he typically spends four to eight weeks a year working on HFHI Builds, usually in the Rocky Mountain region because That s where the trout are. Favorite quote: Take care of the fish, and the fishing will take care of itself. Art Neumann Mark is a native Texan gladly transplanted to Colorado in his military retirement (it s too hot down there!). Although he has had ample opportunity for various types of fishing, his fondest childhood memory is vacationing in Colorado and stream fishing (I d say fly-fishing, but since he was limited to a flexible fiberglass Zebco bass rod jury-rigged to use as a fly rod, it probably doesn t count). From that point, it took almost 30 years for him to discover that fly-fishing was where it is at. While stationed in Alaska, he rediscovered that childhood dream and caught his first salmon on a rod he built and a fly he tied and became an avid follower of all things related. Mark Blair, VP of Government Affairs Now a lifetime member of Trout Unlimited, Mark is following his passion for ecological conservation and environmental stewardship. He is currently the VP of Government Affairs for the Cheyenne Mountain Chapter. Page 4

... An a Few More New Board Members David has worked as a manager, buyer, and owner in outdoor retail industry for 31 years. For the last 15 years he has managed and owned Angler s Covey in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. Angler s Covey has developed a mission focused on teaching fly fishing, with camps, classes, private lessons and guided trips year-round. He promotes Angler s Covey as the place to learn to fly fish and banks on customers buying their gear to outfit their adventure. David Leinweber, Director at Large When it comes to conservation and community support, Angler s Covey is an organization that does not sit on the sidelines. Not only is David a Lifetime member of Trout Unlimited, but Angler s Covey has also been a part of the Trout Unlimited Outfitters, Guides and Business Members Program since its beginning. Angler s Covey wrote the check that jump-started the Trees for Trout restoration project and has been involved in countless community projects. Angler s Covey has also been strong supporters of Project Healing Waters and their therapeutic outreach to wounded soldiers who have made sacrifices for our country. Angler s Covey also emphatically supports the Boy Scouts of America and their proven program to get youth involved in the outdoors and fishing, especially. David served on the Cheyenne Mountain Chapter Trout Unlimited Board in the late 90 s for two years. He also has served on the American Fly Fishing Trade Association Board the past 4 years. David desire is to serve as a Director at Large and focus his attention on the Watershed Inventory Project. He has a deep concern for protecting small streams and would like to see the expansion of Wilderness Designated Areas to include many of these treasures for future generations. 6 Support Your Local Chapter Fly Tying Corner The Kitchen Shelf Ant Ant patterns have been around for a long time, but this one is very special. Mark McMillan held a tying clinic at Ghillies Fly Shop back in January 2010 and showed a handful of interested tiers some really neat flies tied with very different materials. This was one of them. Mark does a lot of experimentation with materials most tiers wouldn t even think of using. He stated he is planning on putting out a full featured book with his new ideas, so I won t steal too much of his thunder. by Jerry Griffin, VP of Communications Kitchen shelf liner Tied by Jerry Griffin But this fly and the material he used really caught my fancy. Mark found ordinary kitchen shelf liner sold at Walmart and found a way to make flies out of it. First you need to make sure you purchase the right kind of kitchen shelf liner. What you are looking for is the kind that has two small connectors in one direction and a single connector in the opposite direction with all the bulbs perfectly vertical and horizontal with respect to each other. If you find the kind that looks more like checkerboard squares, this will not work. At Walmart, the liners come in rolls 12 wide by The Pattern 10 feet long and sell for about $4 a roll. This is enough Hook: Any dry fly hook, size material to tie around five thousand flies! And these rolls come Thread: 10/0 or 8/0 to match body in wide variety of different colors. I would recommend you get Body: One double-segment of together with 4 or 5 of your fellow tiers and go in together on a kitchen shelf material roll of black, red, and brown. Then cut them up into about 2- foot pieces and everyone get a piece of (continued on p. 8) Hackle: Grizzly, trimmed to hook gap Cheyenne Mountain Chapter Trout Unlimited Cutthroat Trout: $250 and above Rainbow Trout: $100 $249 Did you know CMCTU receives little or no funding from Trout Unlimited or Colorado Trout Unlimited to fund our education programs and restoration projects? It's through programs like our Sustaining Membership Program, and other fundraising activities, that we are able to fulfill our mission to conserve, protect and restore the cold-water fisheries and their watersheds in the Pikes Peak Region. The Sustaining Membership Program offers three levels of entry into the program ranging from $50.00 to $ and above. Sustaining Membership Successes! 7 $how Me the Money! So, you may have asked yourself where does my Chapter spend my annual dues? Well, the answer may surprise you. With one small exception, the Chapter doesn t spend your annual Trout Unlimited dues. Regardless of whether you pay annual dues of $35, $50, contribute some amount, or have made the commitment of becoming a Life Member, your dues support TU s national programs. The small exception? Each year Trout Unlimited sends local Chapters a donation or member bonus for having an active Chapter and for filing a Chapter Annual Financial Report on time. The amount of the donation is based on the number of current members in the Chapter. Our Chapter is both active and files our reports on time so we get the donation / rebate each year. This year, 2011, Trout Unlimited sent our Chapter $170. And, we are glad to have received it; it was a nice addition to our Chapter s funding. Our Chapter s revenues come from many sources, significantly from member donations through avenues such as the Sustaining Membership Program, your generous support of the Bucket Raffles at Chapter Meetings, special auctions at Meetings, the Annual Rod Raffle, and our biggest fundraiser in 2011, the Auction. Other revenue sources include grants applied for and awarded, as well as contributions from local and regional companies such as the AC Golden Brewing Company. Our Chapter also received educational grants from organizations like the Catamount Institute to help support our education and outreach efforts. If you were unable to see Erik Heikkenen s President s State of the Chapter presentation at the September Membership Meeting, you can view in on the Chapter website. Just go to the About Us tab on the toolbar at the top of the page and click on 2011 Annual Report. On page 31 of the Annual Report, you ll see that for the fiscal year ending September 30, our Chapter revenue from all sources was $23, a very good year. So, you may be asking Where does the Chapter spend that money, which includes the $170 from Trout Unlimited? Page 7 By Steve Gullette, Treasurer Conserve, Protect, Restore. I am pleased to point out that the smallest general category of expenses, as used in the Annual Financial Report to National, was Management and General. This is monies not spent for fundraising or core programs. For fiscal 2011 our Chapter spent $1,284 just over $100 a month. And that amount includes $783 we contributed to Colorado Trout Unlimited programs and fundraising. The next largest category was Fundraising. Our success at this year s auction did not all come from donations albeit a very large source of auction items. Our Chapter spent $7,467 which includes purchase of items (at deep discount) for the Auction, costs of site rental, food, and supplies for the Auction. Also included are purchases of some items for the Bucket Raffles, raffle licensing with the State, printing, raffle ticket supplies, and fundraising-related expenses such as announcement mailings. If you re keeping track, that only accounts for around $8,751. The largest expense category was Program Services Conserve, Protect, Restore, Education, and Outreach: $17,658! Big sub-categories here included supplies and materials for such projects as Buffalo Peaks Ranch SWA fencing, Fountain Creek Restoration, River Watch, Elevenmile Canyon Clean-Up, and the Happy Meadows stream restoration project. We also sponsor Trout in the Classroom, Parent- Youth Fishing Day, Adult Fly Fishing Class, and donate to other TU Chapter s conservation efforts as well as helping with Project Healing Waters and Casting for Recovery. Our Chapter also donated $9,000 towards the cost of Greenback Cutthroat Trout genetic research involving, in part, our River Watch waters Bear and Severy Creeks. We were fortunate to have been awarded the whole $9,000 through a successful grant application awarded in a prior year. We are only able to do these many and varied conservation, education, and outreach work with the help of our volunteers both general members and their friends and families. For details of where over 600 hours were worked and more than 6,500 miles were traveled on Conservation and Restoration projects alone, look through the President s 2011 Annual Report available on our website. (continued on p. 8)

$how Me the Money! (Continued from p. 7) As someone exclaimed while pulling barbed wire at Buffalo Peaks Ranch SWA this August You couldn t pay me to do this kind of work! Yet our members continue to roll rocks, plant willows, tell the TU story at expos and fly fishing shows, work on education and outreach programs, and help work on Chapter fundraising activities. With your continued help and support, both financial and boots on the ground at volunteer projects, our Chapter is able to leverage our fundraising and members hard work far beyond what a commercial enterprise could do. Thank you for all you do. Fly Tying Corner (continued from p. 6) Separating the body sections to create perfect antennae each color. You ll have enough material to tie ants for the rest of your life! Next step it to cut the shelf material into single strips with the smaller double connectors between the bulbs. If you cut the strips the wrong way with the single connectors holding the bulbs together, they will not pull apart correctly to form the antennae. Next, grasp the strip with a bulb between each thumb and forefinger. Then very gently and slowly, pull the bulbs apart creating two very realistic antennae protruding from each bulb. If you pull them too quickly, the antennae will not form correctly. Take some time practicing this and you will get just the right touch down before you know it. down in the water better. Tie on one of these next summer and you will be amazed at what will come up to take the trusty old ant in this stunningly realistic pattern. Again, all credit for this pattern goes to Mark McMillan for his ingenuity and willingness to experiment with readily available, yet very different materials and coming up with ways to use them for tying flies. I tie these in all my body colors using grizzly hackle. Use whatever color hackle you prefer, just make sure to trim the tips underneath the body even with the hook gap allowing the pattern to sit Page 8 Top view

Buffalo Peaks Ranch SWA Fencing Project Wrap-Up by Terry Deaton, VP of Conservation With our last volunteer work day on 29 October, CMCTU has completed the construction of fencing at Buffalo Peaks Ranch State Wildlife Area, on the Middle Fork of the South Platte in South Park. Originally a Colorado Council project, this work has been led by CMCTU for the past two summers. This year CMCTU sponsored three workdays at Buffalo Peaks Ranch, on 22 August, 10 September and 29 October. Construction of the fence was a critical part of the overall restoration project for this ranch property, and was part of the original agreement between Colorado Trout Unlimited, the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the city of Aurora (the property owner) to provide public fishing access to the stream. Altogether, volunteers from TU and other organizations built about 1.5 miles of barbed wire fence along Middle Fork South Platte during this multi-year project. We were joined by Roland Wayment and his crew of 15 volunteers from the Bonefish Grill restaurant chain in Denver, who supported our TU folks on 22 August. CMCTU volunteers this summer included Lanny Book, Mark Blair, Bill Bristol, Steve Nicklanovich, Howard Stringert, Emily Orbanek, Steven Gullette, Dave Polaski, Jim Davis, Tim Camasta, Jeannette Laird, Derek Fraser, Leah Fraser and Terry Deaton. Thanks to all our volunteers! Completion of the fencing officially closes out our planned work at Buffalo Peaks Ranch, although we are considering future projects in the area. If you would like to get involved in planning and supporting this work, get in touch with Terry Deaton of CMCTU at Terry.Deaton@CMCTU.org. Chapter Committee s Now Forming Chapter Committees are now forming and we want you to be involved! Committees include the following: Membership, Conservation, Education, Communications, Programs, Financial Development, Publicity, Watershed Inventory Project and Government Affairs. Chapter Committees are a great way for the general membership to become more involved with the Chapter's administrative and operational functions necessary to fulfill our mission to; conserve, protect and restore Colorado's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Want to learn more about the Committees? Contact Chapter President Erik Heikkenen for more details! Page 9

A Message from a CMCTU Member Across the Big Pond Father Daniel B. Smith, CMCTU s farthest and most distant member, resides in West Blatchington, United Kingdom... 4,752 miles from Colorado Springs! The Parish Church at St. Peter, West Blatchington, UK It doesn't take much effort to help a friend to take to the streams again and I'd encourage all of you to do just that. Hopefully I'll get to meet you at the Chuck Wagon or sup a few bottles of Colorado Native Lager or a Bear Creek Porter with you in the near future! Greetings from England to fellow Chapter Members! With my prayers and best wishes, Father Daniel Chapter President Erik Heikkenen and I go back a long way to our days as medics in the USAF in the early 90's. Originally from Michigan, I came to the UK over 20 years ago, married a local lass and stayed. I used to fish with my dad for bluegill and perch in the Great Lake State, but got tired of digging for my bait and tried fly fishing as a teenager. Sadly, this past time fell by the wayside as life became busier with children and with ordination as a priest in the Church of England. Last May when I was in Colorado for a brief visit, Erik rekindled my interest in the sport (it is indeed a sport!) with the gift of a fantastic four piece fly rod which I brought home and have been practicing with on the green outside my church. This has attracted a great deal of attention and suggestions for streams and lakes to fish were soon forthcoming! Page 10 Father Daniel practicing on the church lawn

Adult Fly Fishing School by Sam Humpert, VP of Education This was the 2nd year for this new educational program for CMCTU. The adult school was created to complement our very successful Parent-Youth Fly Fishing Day. The adult school is a two day comprehensive introduction to fly fishing. The first day follows the same curriculum as the Parent-Youth day. We use the same facilities as Parent- Youth day, the Catamount campus in Woodland Park. Students learn fly tying by tying a wooly bugger in an onsite classroom. They get hands on entomology by observing and identifying nymphs, larva and leeches from the upper pond. Casting instruction and fly fishing are practiced by the students at lower trout pond. Students learn and practice tying the improved clinch knot, surgeons knot and loop knot as well as participate in a class on conservation ethics. The 2nd day was held in 11-Mile Canyon. The 2nd day started with a period of hands on seining and identification of mayfly nymphs, leeches, crayfish, stonefly and dragonfly nymphs, caddis and midge larvae. Participants also identified and observed adult mayflies and midges. The balance of the day was spent in individualized instruction, with each instructor Allyn Kratz just getting started with the entomology session having no more than two students. The curriculum included reading the river, understanding trout needs and behavior, review of overhand cast and introduction to roll cast. Students also learned and practiced various types of presentation including dry fly, dry and dropper, streamers and tandem nymph styles and rigging. The coming year will have more learning by doing educational programs for members and the public. Anyone interested in being involved as a participant or instructor can contact me by at sam_humpert@yahoo.com. Page 12
