S E Q U O I A C L U B OLYMPIA CHAPTER OF TROUT UNLIMITED P O BOX 7708 OLYMPIA, WA On behalf of the Olympia Chapter Executive Board - Welcome Aboard! On May 16, 2009 all Trout Unlimited members in the South Cascades, Mount St. Helens, Pacific County, Grays Harbor, Mason County and Olympia Chapters were consolidated into Chapter 189, the Olympia Chapter of Trout Unlimited. This increases the membership of Chapter 189 from just over two hundred to nearly three hundred and fifty! We are moving ahead with our efforts to serve the members of our expanded Chapter the best we are able. The rivers and streams in our Chapter are among the most important in the entire state, the region and the nation and we, as recreational fishermen and conservationists, are their first, if not only, line of defense. Our primary objective for the remainder of 2009 is to establish and maintain effective communications with you, while we continue with the ongoing conservation, public outreach and education throughout our expanded Chapter. We ll be involved in multiple road trips to visit Chapter 189 members and your guests during the upcoming months. During these visits we ll strive to better understand which restoration and protection issues are the most important around our Chapter. In the meantime, you and your guests are invited to participate in our August 22 nd, no-host picnic at Friends Landing on the Chehalis River near Montesano. You and your guests are also invited to attend our monthly programs in Olympia. Given the vast area of our Chapter, we ll rely on our website ( web-based monthly newsletter, and communications with our members to help keep our members informed. For those of you wanting to stay in touch with our local Chapter, the Washington Council of Trout Unlimited and Trout Unlimited National, it s really important to be sure that your current address is in TU s membership database. Just as important is the need for you to periodically get online to check our websites for up-to-date information. Please feel free to contact me by (wilcoxj@katewwdb.com) whenever a need arises. The Olympia Chapter Executive Board looks forward, with your help and direction, to developing an even stronger Trout Unlimited presence in SW Washington and throughout much of the Olympic Peninsula. Sincerely, James E Wilcox James E. Wilcox President and CEO Olympia Chapter, Trout Unlimited (360) Nullam arcu leo, facilisis ut 1

Pictures in the electronic copy are in color. Beginning with the September issue, you will have the choice of three methods to receive your copy of The Fishing Line. It s time for each of us to roll up our sleeves and get to work! Friends Landing Picnic - August 22 by Jim Wilcox The Olympia Chapter is planning a second, no-host picnic for members, families and guests. This will be our kick-off event following the recent consolidation of several neighboring TU Chapters. This picnic will be held August 22nd in Kitchen #2 at Friends Landing on the Chehalis River (300 Katon Rd, Montesano). Fishing and boating are available on the Chehalis River and in Quigg Lake located on the Friends Landing property. Of course, all current fishing and boating rules and regulations apply, Overnight tent and RV camping is available via reservation at this beautiful facility designed by Trout Unlimited and our partners to be barrier-free. In addition to fishing and boating opportunities, there s lots of open space for the kids to play. There is also a wonderful, paved path that circles Quigg Lake. This path offers a great opportunity to shed some calories while enjoying the beauty of the Great Northwest following our picnic. We look forward to getting better acquainted with our neighboring TU members and your guests. Kennedy Creek Salmon Splash By Lance Winecka The Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail is a community treasure. Each November thousands of people will visit the Trail to observe naturally spawning chum salmon fighting for survival. Volunteer docents will be on-hand during the busy weekends to help explain the bazaar spawning behavior of chum salmon. Visitors will learn more about mimicry, cross over, dominant versus satellite males, and quivering. Over 2,500 students from three counties will find their way to the Trail this fall. More and more teachers are including the salmon life cycle as part of their science curriculum. Typically every available weekday time slot is filled with approximately 90 classes ranging from preschool through college level. All ages learn something new about the iconic salmon at the Trail. Although each salmon does dies during their final act, their journey is truly remarkable and not to be missed. Please come out to the Trail and see what all of the hype is about this November. 5

by Jim Wilcox TROUT: Catch and Release TROUT Magazine, Trout Unlimited s quarterly publication that each TU member receives as a benefit of our membership is a tremendous marketing tool to have available during fairs and other community outreach activities we do throughout the year. Our next major event is staffing the Washington Council of Trout Unlimited booth during the September 11 27, Western Washington Fair in Puyallup. Having several copies of TROUT on hand would allow us to provide something of quality that booth visitors can take home with them. One way that we can each participate in this activity is to recycle your past issues of TROUT. They ll be collected during our July, August and September membership meetings. Please only contribute your TROUT Magazines if they are in very good condition. While on the subject of this fall s Puyallup Fair, please consider staffing the TU booth. Your help in promoting TU, soliciting new members and selling Washington Council raffle tickets will be greatlyappreciated. Please contact Ron Holtcamp to volunteer for one or more tasks associated with our involvement during the fair. Those volunteering to help Trout Unlimited will be provided with complimentary admission and parking to this Northwest tradition, so spend a few hours at the booth then have the rest of the time to enjoy the fair. What a deal! Welcome to all members of Chapter 189 by Jim Wilcox On behalf of the Olympia Chapter, welcome to the recently-consolidated Chapter 189. The Washington Council of Trout Unlimited unanimously approved the consolidation of several Western Washington TU Chapters during our May 16 meeting in Leavenworth. The Chapters involved in the consolidation are South Cascades, Mount St. Helens, Pacific County, Grays Harbor, Mason County and Olympia. The resulting Chapter will retain (on an interim basis) the identity of Chapter 189 Olympia; the only active Chapter of those involved in this consolidation. The name of Chapter 189 will be voted on by all Chapter 189 members during the Olympia Chapter s November 18 Annual Meeting when our 2010 officers are elected. Written proxy votes prior to the election will be allowed per Olympia Chapter bylaws. For those of you new to Chapter 189, I encourage you to review the material on our website at You ll soon see that we re heavily involved in conservation, education and community outreach activities. You ll also learn that our activities are planned well in advance. In fact, we recently developed and approved the Chapter s five year strategic plan. The Olympia Chapter s website is one of our primary communications tools used to communicate with Chapter members. In addition, we rely on our monthly newsletter, The Fishing Line, and our monthly membership meetings to interact with Chapter members. We also have a few Chapter-sponsored outings (picnics, fishing trips, etc. where we get together with members, families and friends. As Olympia Chapter president, I look forward to the opportunities that our expanded Chapter bring. There are many rivers in our Chapter that need significant attention in order to protect healthy fisheries while restoring the weak runs. Your participation in this effort will be vitally important to our success. Welcome! LIVING IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST... By Les Rosenthal My Week with the Boys I was asked to help teach fly casting and be a fulltime counselor at the 2009 NW Youth Conservation and Fly Casting Academy by program director, Dick Nye. Our club donated $1000 to be used for scholarships to the camp. The camp was located at the Gwinwood Conference Center near Lacey, June 21-28th. Twenty applications were accepted, 17 boys and 3 girls from years old. I was given the year olds. Here s a picture of the boys in my cabin. We are from left to right; Matt Hjelmeland, Nat-Phillip Saucedo, me, Chris Daley, Eddie Neal, James McEachern, Sean Hawkins. That moment lasted about 1/60th of a second! Usually they acted more like this. 9

Here s a picture of Jackson having a fish landed by Eddie. The food was pretty good. Just ask James. Here s Amele with a fish she caught at the pond. There were two Junior Counselors who slept in the other cabin (think contained chaos) with the older boys. Here s Ryan. Note the spiffy camp shirt. If you come next year, YOU can have one like Mike Clancy s and mine! After breakfast the kids were divided into three groups and rotated each hour between fly tying, knot tying, and fly casting. Our own Marcel DuMont taught the knot tying. The kids loved fly tying and did it at every opportunity. Here s Matt Tuttle, lead counselor, working with Julia. Every morning at 6am my cabin and I would convene at the center ready to fish before breakfast. Some days we d go to the Nisqually Pond others to the Little Deschutes River. And Mel Hurd, lead casting instructor, working with Alex and Jackson. 10

Here s a caddis cased larvae he caught. This picture is just before Alex decided the little guy didn t really need that case on so bad. It was amazing to watch the little bug try to reconstruct his case. After lunch we d have classroom type presentation by the top notch volunteers Dick was able to recruit. This is Paul Bakke a hydrologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Teaching us that Hydrographs Can Be Fun!. Some days the fishing wasn t as hot as the weather. Just ask the South Sound Fly Fishers that helped! Usually though, they were netting fish, offering sage advice, and keeping everyone safe. On the bench from the left is Ron Smorynski, Dick Matthaei, Jim Brozio, Nat-Phillip, Dan O Brian, maybe Luke or is it Gage? Sometimes we d take field trips. Here s Dr James Karr, professor emeritus in fisheries, aquatic sciences, biology, civil engineering, environmental health, and public affairs (whew!) from the U of W, Seattle showing us that streams are indeed alive and how they determine that. I even managed to find a speck of time to wet a line. If you volunteer next year you ll get shots at fish like these. Well someone had to show the kids how!? 11

And Ian with one of his. Here s some of fly tying. This is Colton. Here s Michael doing some hunting. And here s Amele, Juliana and Julia enjoying the time. Here s Aiden with his creation. This is a picture of our clean cabin award being rewarded with midnight ice cream sundaes. That sure helped us calm down and get to sleep so we could be up at 5:30 am! Thanks to Nat-Phillip and James we won the award three times! Clockwise from 12 is Eddie, Nat-Phillip, Sean, James, Aiden, and Michael. This was our modified cabin after Matt and Chris moved up to prospectively greener pastures and Aiden and Michael moved in for reasons unknown to me. 12

The last night we had a campfire, made s mores, listened to my harmonica, and Dario s rap. This is Nat- Phillip, Ian, Eddie, and Ryan at the fire. Jared has his back to us. This is a picture of the pillow fight that ensued every night after the reward. I waited them out the first coupe nights, and then learned to sleep through them. It was good, clean fun. You can see we had a great time. Sometimes I d read them (and me) to sleep from, A River Runs through It that James brought. Chris brought The Iliad which frankly wasn t so popular. Here s a shot of casting instruction. Please excuse misspelled names. 13
