3 This Month September 8: cont from pg 1 close formation for a classic aerobatic routine. The T-6, nicknamed The Pilot Maker, was originally introduced as a basic trainer for the U.S. Army Air Corps in SKIP STEWART As the recipient of the 2013 Bill Barber Award for Showmanship and the 2015 Art Scholl Award, Skip Stewart has proven to be one of the most entertaining Airshow pilots in the world today. With over ten thousand hours of flying experience, being an Airline Transport Pilot, Boeing 727, and MD-11 Captain, a Certified Flight Instructor, having owned and operated an aerobatic flight school, earned Gold Medals in regional aerobatic competitions, served as Chief Pilot for a Fortune 100 company and with more than fourteen years entertaining airshow fans around the World, Skip feels comfortable saying that he is one of the very best in the business today. Skip s flying has been featured in magazines that include Plane & Pilot, Smithsonian Air & Space, AOPA, Sports Illustrated, World Airshow News, Auto Pilot, as well as in multiple other domestic and international publications. Skip Stewart is the first pilot to fly an airplane under a jumping motorcycle at an Airshow and he also flies with several other pilots forming shows such as the renowned TinStix of Dynamite Act. SHOCKWAVE JET TRUCK Shockwave is a custom built race truck equipped with 3 huge J34-48 Pratt & Whitney Jet Engines originally out of the USA Navy T2 Buckeye. The combined horsepower is 36,000! Shockwave is not only the most powerful truck in the world, it also hold the record speed for Semi Trucks at 376 mph! As one of the most popular air show and drag racing exhibition vehicles in the world, the Shockwave performance is not something you will soon forget! This is truly an assault of all of your senses with huge flames coming out of the 3 after burning jet engines, fire shooting out of the smoke stacks, intense heat, deafening noise, and SPEED! Shockwave is owned by Darnell Racing Enterprises, Inc based in Springfield, MO and driven by Chris Darnell. There will be T-6 ride giveaways! You can purchase tickets for a chance to win a ride. 6 New Pilot Perspective by David Watt What is paradise? Paradise is not one thing that can apply to everyone uniformly. Paradise is defined by the individual. Some may see paradise as a smoke-filled barroom with spot clean pool tables. Others favor a white sands beach that stretches for miles. How about a fireplace ablaze in a winter retreat log cabin? It s all opinion. These are all fantastic places that would give anyone amazing memories. As for me, paradise is soaring among the clouds or a clear blue sky. It s as if floating in one place and the earth rolls by underneath. Almost a disconnect from reality and an incredible sense of peace and quiet. It s a sense only achieved by piloting a small airplane on a nice day. Not just for a pilot. Anyone riding along will experience this also. I believe this version of paradise is even better when it is shared. What better way to share this version of paradise than using it instead of road trips? A couple months ago, we had a good use for flying. In July, Tina and I was gifted with a new grand baby. Lincoln Royal Minor. This is our tenth grand kid between the two of us. It is a matter of course (maybe even a law) that all grandparents MUST go see the new grand baby. We waited until news that little Lincoln was born before deciding when we would head up to Liberal, Kansas. After we got the news we planned for my next days off to go. This is when Tina dropped a bombshell on me. Tina wanted to drive rather than fly so we would be able to drive around town while there. HA! No. Oh no. It s a five-hour drive there. An hour and a half flying. I have a perfectly good airplane just sitting in the hanger ready to go. Our discussion began with my saying, I m not driving 5 hours when I don t have to. Period. But she had a point. So, I called my good friend Carl Lynn of Havoc Supply there in Liberal. We called her mother about us flying in. Both were willing to supply us with a car to get around while we were in town. We went with Carl (good friend and fellow Mason) because I would prefer not to cruise around town in a bright yellow VW. The weather was very agreeable to flying. With the Comanche fueled up and pre-flight procedures completed we loaded up our bags and our backseat dogs, Cooper and Mollie. Then took off as soon as we could to avoid the heat of the day. The flight was smooth and quite enjoyable. This was Tina s second time flying with me. It was a much longer trip than the first time she flew in the Comanche. She is still new to this machine so there was much commentary during our flight to Liberal, KS (LBL). Shortly after leaving Quanah, TX airspace I realized I forgot to raise the landing gear. Nothing serious but realizing this I said, OH! This was not received well by my passenger. Promptly raising the landing gear, I explained this is not a big deal. Unfortunately, this set the tone for the rest of the flight to Liberal. I had a very alert and inquisitive passenger. We started our approach with traffic in the air. This was a great opportunity for Tina to see how pilots operate in traffic pattern with other aircraft. Our traffic that day was a military airplane at 9000 feet spiraling down to the field. He communicated that he would circle at 4500 until I touched down. Once I cleared the active runway, he did a Go Around maneuver and left the area. We unloaded and had the Comanche fueled up. Chris Lynn brought the car and we were off to see friends and the new grand kid. Tina didn t want to wait until after visiting with Carl so we dropped her off while I went to see Carl for a while. Tina missed a great BBQ spread at Carl s shop. It was very good. Tina did not David with Lincoln Minor September/October 2018 page 6

7 like the fact I failed to bring her some when I caught up with her. Probably should have done that. Hotel arrangements were made for one day. One day turned out not to be long enough to see all the grand kids and friends. It was enough for me. A couple hours of a room full of little kids was all the reason I needed to fly back home first thing in the morning. Tina was wanting to stay another day. I could accommodate this because we flew in, not drove in. If we would have driven the trip I would not have been able to get back home for work in time if we stayed an extra day. So, we could stay another day and see all the grand kids and some friends. Living any amount of distance from family (especially grand kids) has its drawbacks. Christmas and birthday gifts are usually something ordered online and shipped. Everything must be planned out in advance to spend time with them. Being able to fly makes it so much easier. As I mentioned earlier a five-hour drive is not going to happen as often as an hour and a half flight. Period. The flight back home was much more comfortable for Tina. She even caught a short nap. It was getting warm when we were on approach for Quanah runway 17. I chose a straight in approach. My landing at Liberal was nice and smooth so I was expecting the same at Quanah. Everything was by the numbers and on target. I generally fly in slightly under the glide slope so it doesn t appear to my passengers that we are diving at the ground. There are no obstacles on approach to runway 17. I ve got everything right as I level off over the runway. One thing about landing the Comanche I had to get used to is the fact that it feels like you are closer to the ground than you actually are. I eventually got used to this. I get inches off the runway when I hear this from Tina: Is the landing gear down? David with Isabel Corral. WHAT! As I look over at my landing gear indicators I inadvertently pull back on the yoke. The nose floats and drifts to the left. I struggle to keep the Comanche over asphalt and cuss a little. It wasn t a bad landing but not a good one either. We discussed aspects of in-flight and landing etiquette to put it mildly. I am looking forward to making fly-ins in the near future. I need to have more flights to write about so that is one thing for me and Tina to think about and plan for. Be glad to see my friendly fellow pilots at an airport near you soon. 16 Earlier version of this article was published in May 2018 FLY PAPER I sure missed flying! Sometimes life gets in the way of flying. We may not realize how much it is a part of our lives until we have been ground pounders for awhile. I just returned home following a 2 hour local early evening flight and was amazed at how much I missed flying. Following two knee replacement surgeries, two cataract surgeries followed by 6 months of being grounded, I was more than ready to fly again. The last several months were spent in physical therapy and then waiting for the pain medication to wear off. After that, flying was precluded by bad weather. Today I flew to 4 different local grass strips and made 7 practice landings and takeoffs. I was a bit rusty. First landing was terrible, (actually a Boeing Landing: boing, boing, boing!) the last three were very nice. Just like riding a bicycle eh? Well, not quite but close. This flight was over our wheat, cotton, corn, and soybean, farming activities in south central Kansas during late spring. The air was a bit hazy and smelled of smoke from burning grass; an annual practice to eliminate weeds. Fields of large round Brome hay bales are destined as cattle feed. The feed lots also represent a vital farm economy. In my open cockpit plane I sure know when I am near one. As the year progresses, the lot I flew over will house about 1000 cattle being finished for market. Our rural area is linked by many gravel roads. I was fortunate to see a vehicle speeding down one and creating its own horizontal tornado. The air was so still; the dust had plenty of hang time. The last stop during this flight was to attend a fly-in 30 miles from my home airport, (SN52) in Douglass, Kansas. Upon reaching the destination, I made the obligatory high speed, low pass, but mine was with the smoke system full on! Always impressive! Nice thing about low passes in an AirBike; there is plenty of time for people to watch as I go by. Some even go get another soda, return and still don t miss anything! These gatherings with pilots and their families are always pleasant; the host cooks burgers, hot dogs, and provides condiments. Attendees bring side dishes and desserts. The combination makes for a wild variety of related foods. It is easy to over-eat at these events. The three hangars provided shade from the hot setting sun. The band played in the shade of one, food was served in the second one, and the third was where we visited and ate. The event started at 5:00 and went on into the wee hours of the night. I couldn t stay that long so headed home; landing at 8:30 some 20 minutes before sunset. My very trusty and thoroughly reliable AirBike has taken me to places I never dreamed of going and exposed me to many environment and people experiences. What a fantastic hobby, 1100 hours TTAF in 20 years. It is my magic carpet! Several years ago my cousin Linda wrote expressing the following comment about my flying: Paul, you continue to knock me out. You have turned your lifelong interest in building and flying airplanes into a life-enhancing adventure. It tickles me pink that you not only have found such an active means of enjoying your interest and skill at flying but that you share it through your writing skills which match your imagination... Thanks for acknowledging that achievement cousin. Enjoy the photos of the area I protect from the Huns in South Central Kansas. Now, one can realize why I am so vigilant in preventing them from taking over. Paul D. Fiebich a.k.a. AirBike Ace September/October 2018 page 16 (on-line only)
