2 ETU Board Meeting Minutes for Wednesday, October 14, 2009 By Ron Belak, ETU Board Member at Large ATTENDEES: Ron Belak, Larry Drury, Karen Christopherson, John Ellis, Len Wheaton, Steve Murray, Jim Wilborn, John Haile, Wayne Kosloske, Mike Goldblatt FINANCIAL REPORT: Steve Murray reported that ETU has a balance of $2212 in its checking account. Cash sales of raffle tickets to date have been strong. VOLUNTEER PROJECTS: Ron Belak tabulated volunteer hours, estimated at about 700, for Steve to report to TU. The board discussed two future projects: cleaning Bear Creek from Corwina Park down to Lair of the Bear and planting willows and shrubs along the Highway 74 side of Bear Creek in O Fallon Park. The first project will be done in concert with a future Bear Creek clean-up. The second project is estimated to cost $1,000 to $1,500 and only take about a day to complete. Proceeds from the current fundraisers will finance the project, which will take place next spring. PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH: Unlike our nation s last presidential campaign, people have not been beating down the door to ascend to the presidency of ETU. ETU is currently being run by committee, and most board members have either served previously as president or as an officer for extended periods. Larry Drury agreed to head a search committee for a new president. For more details, please contact Larry or any board member. PROGRAM UPDATES: Randy Huiting has scheduled speakers for chapter meetings through May Board members also discussed sponsoring an informal fly tying event on a Saturday in late February or March. Although the event will not be anywhere near the scale of West Denver s event, it will be grander than past ETU events during which one or two tiers gathered to share their favorite patterns with a half dozen to dozen members. Discussions centered around more formal presentations and hands-on demonstrations for enough members to fill a room at Buchanan Rec Center, the Elk s Club, or Beau Jo s. FUNDRAISERS: Karen Christopherson reported collecting over $11,000 in donated fishing equipment, trips, and other merchandise to be used in future fundraising events. In addition to our current raffles, the board decided on an auction in April at a country club or similar establishment. Dinner or heavy hors d oeuvres and cash bar will accompany a presentation by a well renowned fly fisher. Other raffles may follow, and another auction was discussed for next fall. 3 Fly of the Month A Prince of a Fly by John Haile, ETU Vice President One of the prettiest flies in your fly box can also be one of the most effective the Prince Nymph. It came in last year tied for 12th on ETU members list of the dozen must have flies to fish Colorado rivers and streams because it has worked for a long, long time. It also can be a little tricky to tie for most of us. That s why I turned to one of the best tiers around this month to find out how to make it look easy. Jim Cannon is an owner of the Blue Quill Angler fly shop and an expert tier. In a smaller size, the Prince Nymph makes a great dropper imitating a blue wing olive nymph (Baetis) or a Caddis nymph. You ll probably want to go to a brass bead or drop the bead altogether the smaller the fly gets. Jim s Tying Instructions: After crimping down the barb on the hook, start by slipping the bead over the point of the hook and around to the eye of the hook, with the small hole of the bead going first. Jim Cannon s Prince Nymph Recipe: Hook: TMC 5263, Dai-Riki 060, 710, 730 Bead: Tungsten or brass Thread: Black 3/0 Weight: Round wire Tail: Brown biot Body: Peacock herl Ribbing: French embossed gold wire Collar: Brown hackle Horns : White biot Jim insists that the Prince Nymph really should be as easy to tie as any other fly. All it takes is a little practice and a firm grip with your thumb when it comes time to tie in those biots for the tail and horns. As for the fly, it is a versatile fish catcher. In a larger size, it works great as a stonefly imitation or even as a streamer and can be fished deep and aggressively to attract trout. You can even cast it upstream and use your retrieve to imitate a minnow coming back downstream. This is where a heavy bead head like the one Jim has tied works really well. Now wrap your round wire around the shank of the hook and keep pushing up against the bead to keep the wraps tight as well as to hold the bead in place. Come down the shank about half way with the wire and break it off. Cement it onto the shank with some Super Glue, coating the wire at the same time. Next, start your thread just behind the wire and build a small core of thread there to hold the wire in place. Wrap your thread up to behind the bead then back down the wire to make sure it is secure. Pick two brown biots to tie in for the tail. You will want the biots to be of the same size and, when tied in, to curve out and slightly down from the shank of the hook. Start the biot a little to the side of the shank rather than right on top. Look closely at figure #1 to see how nicely Jim has done this. Jim tied these in one at a time. He put one side down against the shank, right at the bend of the hook, holding it in place with his thumb while he tied it down with a couple of quick wraps made with his other hand. He then did the biot on the other side. photos by Tim Stechert He did not clip the excess biot after the tails were tied in, but left them so they could be wrapped up alongside the shank of the hook to help give a smoother transition to the body of the fly. Go ahead and do that. Be sparse with your thread. End up with your thread back at the bend of the hook. See Prince on page

4 Fishing in Winter by Mike Goldblatt, ETU Board Member At-Large With cold weather starting early this year ( one early October night we broke a 105 year old record low by 8 degrees!), my mind turned to winter fishing. Specifically how to stay warm, enjoy it, and catch a few fish. I personally fish a little less in the winter than I used to because my old bones are a little less resistant to the cold, but I still get out there. When I do, I try to do it a little smarter. The key to winter fishing is to be prepared for the conditions. The critical areas are your hands and feet. Jim Cannon at the Blue Quill Angler tells me that Simms makes a great winter wading sock that is part wool and part synthetic. Jim also will soon be carrying a new Simms winter fishing glove that he raves about. Aside from hands and feet, it s also a great idea to have a good pair of fleece underwaders or similar material under your waders. And don t forget good headwear to prevent heat loss from your melon. Once you re on river with the proper gear, the key is to find the fish. In low winter flows, fish tend to congregate in the deeper holes. The water temperature is slightly warmer (or should I say less cold?) in these holes. The deep holes also have very little current, which works well for a wintering fish, who wants to expend as few calories as possible at this time of year. Once you find the fish, or at least find a likely spot, it is critical to use light tippet in the 6-7X range (I always use fluorocarbon) and usually very small flies. Midges are always on the menu in winter, and there are hundreds of patterns to choose from. Usually these patterns will be of the larva and pupa variety in the #18-26 range, but there are many winter days, especially on tailwaters, when there will be a nice hatch of midges. All you need for that is a trusty #18-22 Griffiths Gnat or your own favorite midge adult. But in general the fish are usually hunkered down, looking for a piece of food to drift right into their mouth. So watch your indicator carefully, and set on anything, including hallucinations. Afternoons are usually the best time of day, with the best fishing generally between noon and 3PM. The best local winter tailwaters are Cheesman Canyon and Deckers, Elevenmile Canyon, the Blue, the Williams Fork, and if you don t mind a little drive, you can catch monster trout in the Fryingpan or the Taylor in the dead of winter. The Blue Quill will be conducting a free Saturday morning seminar on fishing in winter on November 21st from 10 till noon. They also do guided winter fishing trips at Boxwood Gulch and North Fork Guest Ranch on the North Fork of The South Platte near Bailey. ETU and CO DOW Shock Bear Creek by Jim Wilborn, ETU Board Member Last September at the end of an ETU board meeting, John Haile asked if any of us were available the next day to help the Division of Wildlife with an electrofishing survey on Bear Creek. My schedule was open, so I indicated I was available. John told me to report at Lair O the Bear parking lot at 8:30. This was my first time doing this, so I had no idea what to expect. When I arrived, it was easy to see I was in the right spot as several people were getting into their waders. I also saw several DOW vehicles parked nearby. The group was made up mostly of DOW personnel, some field agents as well as office staff that had volunteered for the day. There were about a dozen people in all After introductions, we headed down to the water. We were assigned various jobs. First were 5 folks to lead the way upstream with electrodes and nets. The electrodes are at the end of 5-foot-long poles and are diamond shaped wire frames about the size of a dinner plate. The nets were also at the end of 5-foot long poles. Another person was responsible for managing the electrical line along the stream edge as we worked our way along. A portable generator provides the electricity to the electrodes. This is located in the center of the run being surveyed. I m guessing this was a 100 meter length of stream, so there was 50 meters of electrical line to manage. Following the first five folks were another four with only nets. And following them were two guys dragging a sled that held fish picked up in the survey. As we walked along, the fish would be stunned by the electrical current and begin to float to the surface. The first and second rows of netters would reach out and grab these fish and pass them back to the sleds. If the guys in the first row couldn t reach all the way back, they would dump their fish into the nets of the folks in the second row, and so on. All this happened very quickly, too. Very few fish got past the netters, and it was rare that a fish got dropped in the relays from the front line back to the sleds. At the end of the sample run we returned to the midpoint where all the fish See Shocking, on page 5.

5 Fishing the San Juan River by Jim Wilborn, ETU Board Member I was fishing the San Juan River below Navajo Reservoir Dam in New Mexico this September. This was my thirteenth year of going down there in the fall to fish and I haven t tired of it yet! My sister JoAnne, who lives in Ouray, CO, joins me for the trip each year (neither of our spouses cares to fish). The community of Navajo Dam, located on the river about 3 miles below the dam, is made up of several fishing shops, a couple of restaurants, and housing for the locals as well as for visiting fishermen. The river is a wonderful tailwater fishery! Plenty of rainbows and browns that seem to average 18 inches or so in length can be caught with regularity. In the fall the river becomes a midge factory, which dominates my fly choices while on the water. Most midges are in the size 22 to size 26 range. Color varies, so be sure to check in at a local shop for the latest reports. My personal favorite is the Float N Fish, with Abe s next in preference. Six to 7x tippets are the norm as well as micro shot for weight. I usually fish with a 9 foot 5 weight rod. Because of the fish size and tippet size, one must be patient when playing and bringing a fish to the net. I have stayed at a variety of lodging over the years. In Farmington there are numerous hotel/motel options (about 36 Shocking, from page 4. collected in the sled were transferred to a holding pen. miles to the west). In Bloomfield (just 22 miles west of Navajo Dam) is a nice Super 8. Aztec (27 miles west) also has some lodging choices. But right in the Navajo Dam area are a number of options. Just a couple miles west is the Enchanted Hideaway Lodge with 6 different rooms to pick from. If you do your own cooking, these all have small kitchens. This has been the choice of my sister and me for the last 6 years. Abe s has plenty of motel rooms, some with kitchenettes, as well as RV hookups. Rizuto s has a couple of rooms as well. We were able to fish for four full days this year. At the beginning of our stay I had arranged a half-day float trip with Chris Taylor, owner of Fisheads of the San Juan River. He is a very knowledgeable guide and put us on to a number of fish in our four hours with him. It was the first time I had floated the San Juan and what fun it was to see the river (and the fish) from this perspective! The remaining time we spent wading the river in several of our over 300 fish in this one section! The largest was a 22 inch Brown Trout! favorite places. Lots of fish were caught and fun had by all. The weather in mid September is often mild (we had sunny days with temps in the 60 s and 70 s) and the river flow is usually around 500 cfs (which is very comfortable to wade). If you go in October the weather can be wet and cold, especially later in the month. The water temperature is always in the low 40 s F. I tried using toe warmers (sold for skiing) this year and they kept my feet from getting too numb. I would be glad to discuss my favorite spots if you plan on going down. These are a few website links with information about this fishery one more survey was done on a stretch just west of Morrison. Then the group went back and repeated the sampling with the electrodes and nets to pick up any fish that might have been missed in the first pass. A successful sample is declared if the first pass yields 70% or better of the total. If it seems lower than that, a third pass of the run is done. Well, after that, all the fish collected are then weighed, measured for length, and recorded by species. We collected well The fish were mostly Browns and Rainbows, but a good number of Suckers were also in the sample. Last, there were also Dace. These are small fish that don t grow much more than 4 inches in length. The small Dace and Suckers are food for the larger trout. When the measuring/recording was completed, the group went on downstream, just east of Idledale, to the next section to be sampled. The whole process was repeated. Following a lunch break, Quite an interesting experience! The majority of trout were in the 7 to 9 inch size with maybe 40% in the First of Year class (3 to 5 inches). But there were enough larger fish that I am encouraged to spend more time fishing Bear Creek. Besides, now I know where all the fish are hiding. Thanks John for encouraging me to participate in this activity. I will be doing it again when there is a request for volunteers

6 Member Report The Return of the Kokanee Hunters by Len Wheaton, ETU Board Member at Large It had been exactly four weeks since Wayne Kosloske and I had driven 200 miles from Evergreen to the Gunnison River for the excitement of salmon on the flyrod, yet here we were doing it again. We had left very early Saturday morning on Sept. 19 with plans to turn around and come home Sunday evening. Something special about those Kokanee, or landlocked sockeye salmon. But here we were tramping the shore of the Van Tuyl Easement in Gunnison looking for salmon-holding water and vainly casting on the extensive riffle that makes up that area. It was a wonderfully warm sunny morning and the scenery was fabulous. We sat down, ate our lunch and hiked out. Soon we were back to familiar water near Almont, and we got into fish! Action was steady, but it really went into fast from around 4 p.m. until about 6:30. There were a few of the silver-bright fish, but most were big, red and heavy. Just like last time, the pink San Juan Worm was good. Also working were a larger all-purpose black nymph, a yellow stonefly, a Prince Nymph, and a Bushy HalfBack. We found once again that fishing a single fly seemed to provide more mouth-hooked salmon than when we used a pair of flies. By 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Wayne and I were back on the river and had it to ourselves for about an hour before two other anglers arrived. We enjoyed steady, good action all day. There seemed to be more salmon in the river and we had a grand six hours of fishing until a heavy rain set in about 2:30 and drove us off the water. By then, I had caught two nice brown trout, and we each had missed at least two more trout hookups besides our many Kokanees. There was a heavy mayfly Pale Evening Dun hatch beginning about 1:30 p.m., with clouds and drizzle and then trout rising like crazy. A lighter dry-fly rig would have been just right, but we were about ready to call it quits anyway. As always, the thrill of these leaping, fighting landlocked sockeyes repaid our devoted efforts. (far left) Wayne Kosloske has a nice, very red male Kokanee in the 20 inch range taken from the Gunnison River in late September while (immediate left) Len Wheaton dangles what he says was at least a 22-inch specimen that threatens to break his line. Prince, from page 3. Right where your biots are tied in at the bend of the hook, now tie in your gold wire for the ribbing and then tie in several strands of peacock herl. Use more strands for larger hooks, fewer for smaller ones. Take your thread up to behind the bead on the hook. Twist the peacock into a small rope and then wrap it up the shank to behind the bead. Tie it off with three firm wraps and clip the excess. Reach back and counter wrap (away from you) the gold wire rib over the peacock to behind the bead. Tie down the wire and break off the excess. The hackle collar is next. Tie the brown hackle in, first trimming some of the excess hackle off the stem and even trimming a little stem off so the hackle is flexible enough for an easy tie-in. Place the stem pointed down and slightly forward alongside the shank just behind the bead and tie down with three tight wraps. Make about three tight wraps of your hackle behind the bead, tie off and cut off the excess hackle. Now pick two white biots for the horns. Tie these in just behind the bead as well, just as you did the tails, with the biots arching up over the back of the fly and through the hackle, but with the tips curved down. You will need to keep the biots more to the top of the shank as you tie them down to get the right effect. Whip finish, and you re through
