3 THE LOGO The logo for both the men s and women s tournaments contains patterns that represent the indigenous cultures of the countries hosting the Rugby League World Cup 2017: New Zealand, Australia and Papua New Guinea. The shape of the logo is based on that of the trophy. NEW ZEALAND [on the top]: The koru symbolises new life, regeneration, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol of Māori art, carving and tattoos. AUSTRALIA [left side]: The symbol, inspired by Indigenous Australian art, represents players travelling to the Rugby League World Cup, which is shown as the circle the meeting place. PAPUA NEW GUINEA [right side]: The Kundu or drum is the national PNG symbol and is featured in their coat of arms. The drum is common in all PNG provinces and mainly used in cultural dancing. Explore the logos of local businesses and organisations and think about the values they are trying to show. Look at the mascots and logos of rugby league clubs or past World Cup events and think about what they represent. What do you think they symbolise? Discuss why the organisers of the Rugby League World Cup 2017 might have chosen this logo to represent the event. Design a meaningful mascot or logo for your school sports team that shows your school values. You might want to design the logo for the next Rugby League World Cup in England in MOMENTS THAT MADE IT HAPPEN Find out more about the history of the Rugby League World Cup at RLWC2017.com/history and the history of the game by reading this story at bit.ly/teararlhistory. 7 ROOKIE SPORTS REPORTER Watch, read or listen to reports about sport in newspapers, blogs and sports news websites. Write or record your own report about a rugby league skills game that your class has played. If you need some ideas for games, there are plenty of NRL coaching resources at bit.ly/nrlresources and on the Primary Rugby League website bit.ly/prlresources. Don t forget you will need: a headline that makes people want to read or watch the report a first paragraph that summarises the game with plenty of descriptive words remember to include who, what, where and when a recount describing any highlights in the order that they happened, written in the past tense photos and or videos of the game. You could include: some of your own opinion quotes from players, coaches, supporters or the match officials. Publish your reports in your school newsletter you could even make it a regular feature. When the Rugby League World Cup 2017 is on, watch the games, report on them and publish your own reports on a blog. THE BOOT OF THE FUTURE You are a rugby league boot designer in Draw the boot that you have designed for your team heading to the 2037 Rugby League World Cup. Use the NZRL Well-being/hauora resource available from NZRL to consider links between well-being/ hauora and rugby league. Design other equipment that will support players physical, emotional, social and spiritual health. RUGBY LEAGUE INQUIRY LAUNCH YOUR OWN INQUIRY What is the percentage of people in your school who regularly watch rugby league on TV? Who has been to live games? How many play? Do you have any rugby league players in your community who have represented their province? What else did they do? Which sports are you able to play in your community? What does your local rugby league club do for your community? Do other people know about that? How do you think being part of a sporting team develops positive leaders for communities? What is the history of your local rugby league club when was it formed, by whom and so on? Is that recorded anywhere? Plan and carry out a community-focused outcome for your inquiry create an exhibition of past and present local sportspeople, hold a thank you event for any community services that sports clubs carry out, or present the council with an idea for developing a new sports facility.
