all Briefs - continue d Talk about the hard sell at St Kevin's Old Boys last Sunday After a disastrous game against the school and coach Mick back hom e invited there filled him with food etc and proceded to tell him ALL the reasons why he (Mick) should be back in the side next week One of his main reasons was that Mick Fernon, best on the ground last week at centre half-back, was not doing well enough Best of luck Lew We liked Mick Renwick's effort in dobbing eight out of twelve for Ivanhoe Reserves from his half forward flank last week Peter Hartney impressed again with 3, and Roger Freeman steered through one of his thirtyodd kicks to make up the dozen Well done on your first win fellas Ron appeared a little pleased, too Good to see "Crewy" Barker of Caulfield Grammarians back in form, and the display of strong marking plus seven, goals from Greg Tootell against University Blues was match winning football After going down again last week, University Blues are now in a very danrerous position Congratulations to Simon Trumble, Frank Ross and Rob Jeremiah who have all come up from the Juniors and done well What a fine debut Martin Halliday made for Monash last Saturday Martin came on at half-time and opened up the forward line He took several fine marks and set an example for the players around him with his determination Well done Martin, keep it up Congratulations to North Old Boys for two good wins over Kew last week The Firsts' victory was a fine exhibition of skill, while the Reserves was one of determination, and with a combination of both these qualities in future games it should not be long before we have two sides in the four Congratulations to Phil Elliott, Mauri e Drew and Randall Prior for fine games last week Congratulations are extended from all at St Bernard's to John "Tiny" and Joy Crennan on the birth of their first child last Saturday However everyone is wondering why Tiny, an expert on cars, did not pay the extra "for an instrument panel " Also congratulations to Alec and Marie Ellard on the arrival of a daughter, after three sons, last week Alec - a great supporter and donor has stated that he will now "put the cue in the rack" The Alphington brain drain continues "Gentleman" Garry Cartwright is the latest deportee and is to pursue his financial chicanery in New Guinea in a couple of weeks He will be away for a year or so and will be missed from our team and social life Garry is the only bloke in our club who can sport three days growth on his face and wear old clothes but still look immaculate About seven goals down during the second quarter and thinks looked black for Tooronga-Malvern Then coach Max Trotter made several positional changes, and they all came off In a heart-stopping finish the combine gradually wore down the opposition and received a well earned four points A feature of the game was the brilliant marking and ground play of full back and captain Gavan Brady, who turned out the opposition time and again in the last quarter Ian Watson, Old Carey's vice-captain, celebrated his 50th game with a great display in the ruck against Tooronga-Malvern Ian can always be relied upon to give his utmost for 4 quarters and last Saturday was no exception He rucked with great determination all day and it was not his fault that Old Carey failed to win the 4 points THE A M ATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 13, 1970 Page 15

Ball Briefs - continued OM's had a most satisfying win last week; considering the circumstances the result couldn't have been better! Dave Wilson played a great game on the wing and the dynamic "Rosco" Stansfield-Smith proved an excellent replacement in the centre Dave King played his best game for the season, his ruck work and marking were excellent Geoff Cloke returned to form on his back flank, while Rob "Buey Sixpence" McKay and "Roso" were mentioned last week - you can't expect a write up every week fellas! The continued improvement of Old Haileyburnians Reserves under the guidance of Rob McKay can be attributed to the form of some of our first-year players, namely Rod Hart, Tony Coote and a much improved Lou Irving Keep it up fellows National Bank's young follower Tom Houlihan turned in a sterling performance against Old Haileybury last Saturday He showed the Bank's forwards the way with three very useful goals UH S Old Boys welcome the return of Max Johnston back to the side after his two week rest Max has just returned from him honeymoon Coach gave Max instruction to keep his training up while away I wonder if he did - looks a bit tired - he must have John Driver was seen buying half-a-d last Saturday morning before the game He played a real good game too - could there be any connection? St Kilda CBOC's giant ruckman Dennis Drew is really starting to string consistent displays together Usunig his height to advantage he rarely misses the tap and his accurate shooting around goals, despite his ungainly action, has him at the top of our goalkicking list With Peter Cooke playing his best game for the season as a ruck-rover, and Tessa in fine form, Drewie has the two parneters to form a powerful first ruck combination Old Brighton Reserves fielded several heavyweight last week Newly married Roger "Joe" Wilson, Geoff "Herman Munster" Hosie and John "Grassy" Hopgoad all give the bathroom scales a scare This puts us "weigh" ahead In a game containing bursts of brilliantfootball and poor passages of play, AMP came again in the last term to clinch a game it had tried to lose for three quarters "Sloanie," "Ferret" and "The Machine" formed-'' a dominant centre-line, Barry Long indicated a welcome return to form with a strong marking display, Brian, Ahern turned in a solid one and received strong support from "Stretch" McLennan who is almost cherry-ripe, "The Porter" and "Fats" Thompson once again did the heavy work around the ground, Kim Perrin turned in his best one this year Pity the poor Press Correspondent down Fairfield way I take a terrible pounding from one party each week - he claims I'm blind and I never see him play a good game - I even miss the goals he kicks - so he says This week he has made the big time, so next week you'll see a new two-some, yours truly and Ray "Dr Spock" Rudd David "Kilaf Kildea killed the field, including your truly the old pro himself, in the Parkside challenge race of 31 mil around Albert Park lake last Sunday Denis turned in the fine time of 20 minutes for the run Others to show out were Billy Rodda, Len Stenlake and Brian Lauder Ray the "Junior" Senior sprinted the distance in between walks, especially when the scenery was delightfully fascinating, in the time of 30 minutes On handicap he would have won I was told Page 18 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 13, 1970

oall Brief s- - continued Congratulations to Old Trinity's vice -captain who notched up his 50th game last week Peter Quarterman has been one of the club's best players and an enthusiastic committeeman Pete is one of the players the club is relying on to help us out of D Grade, we are still waiting to see him at his best this year, but after his performances last year we know what to expect A welcome return to Brunswick's John, ((Quinine) Quinn, his first game back was a real beauty He created many scoring opportunities up forward Old Ivanhoe supporters had more to cheer about last week after two poor weeks Highlight of the main game was the improved work of the forward line which moved the ball around quickly and showed the benefits to be gained from good backing up Mike Williams showed the Reserves the way home, with a dash from centre half-back( a mighty kick and two accurate bounces and in for a goal Had the crowd roaring their approval Phil "Stumpy" Connor was best afield for Old Camberwell last week He kicked five goals (and missed about five) in what was a great display of guts and determination It's a pity more of the 'Wells did not follow his example Others who showed out were Dave Tucker (once again), Ian Vincent and "Butch" Me-Callum Butch who has taken many heavy knocks this season received one early in the game last week but played out the game despite a painful ankle A great effort for his team Melbourne High's star utility player Bob "Maf" Staley playing in his first season with the Senior side was given few opportunities last week He had booted one goal up until talf-time and was raring to go in the second Then it came "You're on Maf," said a changing ruckman Head down, "Maf" charged for the ball amid a pack of players, but alas, he fell heavily and was taken from the ground with a broken collar-bone After having had the shoulder strapped, he turned and said "any ordinary man would be home in bed by now" The pity of it is you can only name six best players and after Ormond's slashing win last week 12 players missed out Some players worth a mention were "Lumpy" Moran, dashing and safe ; "Mel" Bourke, reliable as ever; "Teaser" Ladd, great at centre half forward, and a big comeback goalsneak "Lord" Dexter, "Lefty" Wright, oh and all the others! Congratulations to Jeff (Trakus) Trevascus of R OB:s on a good performance Sunday morning PERMITS CLOSE SOON Applications for permits for season 1970 will close with the Records Secretary of the V AFA Mr Bruce De Lacy, 67 Charman Road, Mentone 3194 on July lst The only application considered after that date will be that of a player affiliated with a club in the amateur body of South Australia, Western Australia or Tasmania, who is transferred to Victoria, in his employment, or a National Serviceman who returns to Victoria A player who has played with a club in the V A FA this season, and has subsequently played with an other club, must sta nd down for two matches before being eligible to play for his V A FA club again In a case such as this, the date on which he last played with the other club must be shown on his permit application THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 13, 1970 Page 19

FROM HERE AND THERE LOOK AFTER YOUR VALUABLES A few wallets took a beating afte r last weeks game for Old Brighton Even though the Reserves won by seven goals their money still went for a walk We put it down to experience! DOUBLE CENTURY TO ANZ BANKER Congratulations to Peter Treleave n of ANZ Bank playing his 200th game today Peter started his career in 1957 and has been one of our most consistent players year after year Peter has been worried by injuries this season, but is overcoming these problems and will play a key part in the rest of the season's games Here's to the next milestone, Peter 150 GAMES TO FOOTSCRAY PLAYER Geoff Fletcher, Footscray Tech' s "Senior" ruckman played his 150th game against Uni Blacks last week Geoff, always a battler, is the veteran of the Senior team this year and always gives his all for the blue and gold 100 TO ST BERNARD'S HALF- FORWARD All at St Bernard's congratulate Peter Amott on his 100th game today Over the years Peter has been both a fine player and clubman and everyone hopes that he continues for many years as an elusive half-forward Being the coach's son doesn't worry Doug Adams very much ; probably he is like most sons and can tune out the old man at will Occasionally they must coincide at the dining room table which is when Perc can get his thoughts expressed Still Doug has played 100 games at Alphingtan with credit to himself, the club and the family, and we look forward to quit e a few more Page 24 What a great job Pat Canny, an Ronnie, Bob Blair, Bill Hatnmond, Russell Cooper, Paul Slattery, Des Dorey and Fred Galdrey do each Sat _ urday to get Hampton Rovers on the field These boys go about their various tasks with great enthusiasm and it is a pity that their efforts are not rewarded What about it fellows 100 GAMES TO BOB MILLER The Power House dynamo "Fiery " Bob Miller played his 100th game against St Kilda CBCOB Bob joined 'House in 1963 with the Juniors and was captain in 1964 In 1965 be graduated to the Reserves and has played in both the Seniors and Reserves since then He won the club's most consistent player in 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968 Throughout his career he has played in only one position - a rover Congratulations from all at Power House 'Tis a fine, bright, beautiful morning this morning it is - Poison Pen's mob went down to Fairfield, 'twas a sight to be seen, Gaympie, old bean There was not one weak link in the Fairfield chain Colin "Tip" Topp was there when needed, he didn't loaf all day and he sliced his way through the opposition Another fine performance was turned in by Alan "Yo- Yo" Jones - he used to be called "Plumb-Bob", something that goes down and stays down, but now he's getting up again, hence the new name! Our two bleary travellers havn't left yet I have heard they are waiting for a "Harry Lime" (to the uninitiated that's the third man), so perhaps soon I'll have more news Sorry you didn't get down to drown your sorrows with me Poison Pen, but you may make the Spirts Night Till the Sabbath rolls round again, Adieu - The Bleeder THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 13, 1970

Frann Here and re continued I 00 GAMESBURIAND HAILEY- This Saturday Peter "Keke" Davie s plays his 100th game for Old Haileybury Before playing with us "Zeke" played many games with Power House but came across to the "Bloods" in 1962 "Keke" has been a great clubman over many years and would have reached his 100 games far earlier had he not gone overseas for 3 years Good luck for your next 50 Congratulations to Jim Green of Old Carey on qualifying for Life Membership of the club Tim is a veteran of over 150 games which gives him the honour of Life Member Sad salutations, Gympie Unfortunately I did not get to see my friend in prose last week as I made another flying trip to Geelong where I joined the ranks of the immortals by being labelled the world's worst umpire - I must be going well I notice Geelong knocked off Uni Blacks the other week - they did not pussy-foot around in this game I hear and the Blacks were black and blue afterwards It seems to me the Uni boys would have been singing the blues after this game Let's hope Pussy Cat's team keeps playing well and takes off the flag - our hopes were severely dinted by Fairfield's splendid victory over us last week It appears that if the 'Fields and Parkside - the industrials - played off in the Grand Final the turn would never finish, before daylight that is Hoping the Bank's were the greatest last week, till next week if I'm not in a fog, or haven't the foggiest Poison the Pen CENTURY TO PARADE ROVER Heartiest congratulations go to popular Old Paradians rover Hughie Ford who played his 100th game for the Club against Ormond last Saturday Congratulatory greetings Bleeder, old blood Well the Bloods certainly turned in a fine performance against the Parks last week It appears that the hard training your fellows have been doing paid the expected dividends last Saturday I had my pen poised at the Pleasant Sunday and learnt that it was the hardest game the Norman "Larry trhe Lip" Willoughby and Ron "Stiff Leg" Tennent had ever played in I believe Vin 'Witchdoctor" George colled your ear, and "Willo" copped one behind the ear - the 'Fields would not come that caper or go home I hear The amber liquid was pouring that quickly that Jamy the Industrious gent - a boring fellow at anytime - allowed for spillage, but to clear the puddles he armed himself with a brace and bit and it is now acknowledged that Parkside have the happiest mice in Melbourne Do you have borers in the floor? To end on a happy note I will say our Reserves achieved the desired result See you soon I trust, Poison Pen All at De La would like to extend their appreciation to the "tent" ladies, those pies and pasties etc certainly go down well Keep up the good work girls Sorry to hear Footscray Tech Reserves manager, Jeff Walker met with an unfortunate accident at work last week A most popular clubman "Squawks" has always given his time and effort to the Tech teams From all members of the club and all those associated with it, we wish you a speedy recovery and hope it won't be long before we see you around again Congratulations to National Bank Juniors on their first win for three seasons Special thanks to "Scott,n" for great team effort Keep it up chaps and more wins will come your way THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 13, 1970 Page 25
