3 L A ST QUARTER FIGHT-BACK SAVES C U G na., A.S. Pip Monash by 2 Points v nhoe Trouble Ormon d By GEORGE TAGGAR T De La Salle, after leading for most of the day, could not withstand a strong Pt ~ ~' S the last quarter by Coburg, who finished strongly to win by 17 in a thrilling finish, Melbourne High scraped home by two points from 11Ionash University after they too had trailed for most of the match. Ivanhoe gave Ormond a lot of trouble in a see-saw game with Ormond finally winning by two goals. Better scouting around the packs was a big f actor in Ormond's win. University Blacks won the battle for outright leadership of B Seition when they beat Old Scotch by 33 points. Both sides were undefeated prior to this match with Scotch leading on percentage. Four other leading teams were beaten - Assumption, Parkside, Elsternwick and Assumption Reserves, and another (Monash Juniors) won narrowly. De La Salle outplayed Coburg in the first half to lead by 25 points at the interval, and it was half-way through the last quarter before Coburg took the lead, "De La" adding only 9 points in the second half. Monash handled the wet conditions better than Melbourne High and were 20 points in front at half-time of a low-scoring game. But MHS finished determinedly and took the lead a few minutes before the siren. Caulfield Grammar held Collegians for three quarters and although Collegians came back well in the last, their leeway was too great and they were beaten by 33 points. Old Paradians kicked 6 goals in the first 7 minutes against University Blues and then succeeded in closing up the game to hold Blues' out for a 13 point win. Old Xaverians scored their first win for the season when they beat Footscray Tech by 3 goals and North Old Boys beat Commonwealth Bank by nearly 7 goals. Geelong thrashed Kew to the tune of more than 11 goals and St. Bernards' had an easy win over Alphington. Scotch's defeat by the Blacks caused them to slide from top place to fourth, Geelong now being second on percentage. Matches in C Section were remarkably even, the widest margin in the five games being Old Haileybury's 13 point win over Tooronga-Malvern. Old Carey inflicted the first defeat on the leaders, Assumption, scoring by 22 points, and Uni. High beat Old Melburnians by 10 points, to be outright leaders of the Section. Hampton Rovers beat Power House by 3 goals and St. Kilda CBC had 11 points to spare over National Bank. Parkside beat Glenhuntly by 7 points in a low-scoring struggle and Old Brighton scored by 3 goals over AMP Society. Old Trinity, St. Kevin's and Fairfield had comfortable wins over West Brunswick, Old Geelong and St. Pat's respectively ; with Trinity now on top. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-May 23, 1970 Page 3

4 T. W. S HER RIN' S "KANGAROO" BRAND FOOTBALL S FIRST BALL MADE FOR AUSTRALIAN GAME - Sti ll Leads The Field Latrobe University replaced Elsternwick in E Section top place when they beat the `Wicks by 11 points, Elsternwick dropping to fourth. Old Mentonians scored their first win for the season when they surprised ANZ Bank and won by nearly 7 goals. Reservoir Old Boys beat Old Ivanhoe by 17 points and State Savings Bank kicked a big score (214 points) in beating Old Essendon. Junior Section leaders, Monash University, beat St. Bernard's by only 5 points and Old Scotch scraped home by 3 points from bottom team St. Kilda CBC. Both were low-scoring games. Ormond had a big win from Melbourne High, who are having a lean season. Section 2 leaders, Army Apprentices, who kicked 677 points in the first five games, were held to a score of 4-14 (38 points) by West Brunswick, who however, could manage only 2-6 (18 points). Old Brighton easily beat Elsternwick, the margin being nearly 13 goals and Toronga-Malvern scored a big win over Ajax. There were a number of close games in the Reserves - Collegians beat Caulfield Grammar by 5 points.' Commonwealth Bank beat North Old Boys by 4, Old Xaverians beat Footscray Tech by 2, the same margin by which Power House beat Hampton Rovers. ANZ Bank beat Old Mentonians by 8 points and in a battle of the backlines, Old Camberwell beat Old Xaverians by 5 points to 2.4. GROUND CHANGE NEXT WEEK (MAY 30th) Next Saturday's E Section match between La Trobe University and Reservoir Old Bays will now be played at Oval 10, Albert Park, instead of La Trobe University Oval. 14 BALL,,_U.FS All at U.H.S. Old Boys congratulate Bruce Pascoe and his wife on their marriage last Saturday. Bruce made himself available to play last Saturday, but the selectors decided not to take the chance of him `missing out" because of an injury. AMP Reserves won the points in a rugged display against Old Brighton. New coach Rig "The Orator" Bell has done well considering the number of changes enforced weekly. "Dynamo" Collery roved brilliantly and may force his way into the senior side this week. Alan Saxby continues to fire, Larry Scott once again was solid in defence and "Herb" Gay came under notice. The Reserve grade players have an extra incentive to play well now ; turn it on or be dropped to the firsts! Peter Raymond, who was brought into the Old Carey firsts to replace Roger Gamble who was injured, gave a great exhibition of wing play. With John Goode and Graham Chapman he made up a tremendous trio of little men who played a dominating role in Old Carey's win. A great opening quarter by Assumption was a forerunner to disappointment. After a great start in which Barry Dyer, Chris Jeacle and Des Tuck were stars, the opposition grabbed the ascendency in the second quarter and held it. Players to battl~ all clay in the slippery conditions were Michael "Bull" Howe, Barry "Young Feller" Munari, and Bernie "Crash" Me-Mahon, who celebrated his selection in the Carnival squad with a great game. Pat O'Dwyer and Mick Avery showed out around the ground, and skipper Maurie Beaumont made his presence felt after his late arrival. Tooronga-Malvern Juniors had many fine players in their win over Ajax. Liev Zobie, Ray Martin, Bill Leifting and Greg Cullen were very ctive forwards, John Young and T Perkins were very good ruckmen,._, Graham Watts played a good capta ; game. A winning centreline, fine defend4rs in McMahon, Drinan and Kenny, a great three-goal burst in the 1quarter by Jack White, and plent y G. & D. led to St. Kilda C ' C good win over National Bank. T Tesoriero and Jimmy Estnontle rov, tirelessly and kept us in it when th(.._ teamates weren't firing. Coach Bert Gaurdion is being driven to drink by National Bankers who once again let the opposition off the hook in the dying stages of the game last Saturday. Parkside defender Tom "Terrific" Johnston received his roast before Sunday dinner off coach Doug Robertson for giving too much latitude to Glenhuntly forwards. Even though, "Tom Tom" has a tendency to play this way on odd occasions, `Johnno" will wear this bake, but hopes it rubs off onto Norm Willoughby and "Husky Lusky" whose opponents he has had to check several times. Win that ball and wear down your opposition today, "Tom Tom" to prove the goose is not cooked. Good to see Neil Duncan really firing for Glenhuntly. "Dunc's" continually drove the "Hunters" forward. Noted mud runners, Kerry Nolan and Bob Contencin revelled in the conditions and things may have been different with the wind in that dry first quarter. Congratulations seem to be in order for North Old Boys this we~,k both for the good win they recorded over Commonwealth Bank last Saturday and for the inclusion of Les Murray, Bob Spurling and Kevin Power in the Victorian training squad for the Amateur Football Carnival in Perth in July. The, '1iv blemish of Jack's performance is at times he reports to the coach,',,at be is a little tired in not the, acest of terms. Collegians best against Caulfield Grammar were from Chris Roach for a good display all day, young John Shinkfield, who is yet to play a poor game, Bob Zent, Wes Roach who gave a vigorous display all day, Skipper Rick Edwards, Ken Boundy a first year player who is still showing promise of becoming one of our top players of the future. Congratulations to John Moodie on his selection to the Senior side, John The Mood must have left his kicking boots in the Reserves room, he could only manage one goal but played well all day. Welcome back to the Ivanhoe fold Harry Parnell and Bruce Wakefield. Both players made their first appearance on the field for several years against Ormond last week. Harry started to show a bit of his old touch as the game progressed and "Wakie" settled in quickly after coming on in the last quarter. The Hoes look forward soon to some of the great performances provided in the past by these two stalwarts. Kevin O'Toole played his first game for De La Salle last Saturday and by his fine form is assured of a good year, Well done Kevin. MHS's duplicate find for the season, the "who's who" twins Hanry and Michael Ritterman, continue on their winning way. Coming from the Juniors this year, both have been doing a wonderful job for the club with Henry commanding the roving division with nipper Mike on the wing last week especially putting on a great display when coming onto the ground during the second quarter and both finishing up in the best players. St. Pat's (Ballarat) is pleased to see the return of Des (Test Pilot) Leyden. Des has returned very keen and his enthusiasm really shows. Last week his efforts in organizing players for the Seconds did not go unnoticed. This type of player is really showing remarkable club spirit. You're doing a great job Des, please keep it up. I know the players in the Seconds will co-operate with you. Let's hope we can win some games for your effort! Although they have won only two games and being beaten in a third by less than a goal after leading all day, they have gained tremendous support, and with such a young side augurs well for the future. Have you ever seen a bright spark try to turn a rotary clothes line with a tent tied to it? A couple of Fairfield boys did, and the bloke doing the turning was sober at the tinme, we think. When La Trobe plays four quarters of football they will not only beat but murder any side in E Grade. What about a big win this week against old rivals Tooronga, and then to "Stewies Stew Pot" at "The Flat" for a victory celebration. It looks as though Commonwealth Bank are not going to lose their reputation for being the last to go home. Despite repeated requests it was noticeable that Ron, Floss, Dusty, Shacky and Basil were still there at the North Melbourne new gathering place at the last moment. Thanks Bill! Keep up i1_e support Keith. Also mention to '?- uce Alphey, our time-keeper. Bruce follows the club every week and it's good to see an outsider take an interest in the club. Thanks again Bruce. A great fighting effort by Melt;ourne High saw them just get home a-air_st Monash Uni. last week. Four -oals down at half time looked bad, but then an inspiring coaching display by Heith "Smoothie" MarEihall sent the team on its way. A thrilling last quarter by both teams saw the lead change four times but an enormous goal by captain Jo h C a id another by : EIe- ;rce" Malone just made the differa ice. For the second time in three weeks De La had the game won up to the end of the third quarter, but failed to fight on in the final term. Experienced Old Carey players Richard Jones and Doug Steele celebrated their first game for this season by turning on excellent performances in the Reserves against Assumption. Richard was probably best man afield and Doug marked and kicked well at full forward. Oth--r former Fitts players to do well were John Locke, also --la=-=r ; his first game this year, a,d. v I-Ticks, U.H.S. Old Boys' I3( 'Reid did not make one mistake last Saturdav. Footscray Tech's Reserve winger "Sparr,3~%," turned in a great game in the mud last week. A slender chap, Ray throws himself after the ball at every opportunity and rarelv misses. Peter Griffiths also turned in a creditable game with some strong marking in the conditions. A welcome return to form of Old ivtentonlans last week. Highlights of the game were 4 goals by Gary "Nuts" Page and the excellent teamwork and understanding between Peter "The Peanut" Ingram, Ian "Syd" Harrison and Drew Pearson. Still without a win to their credit, but trying hard, are the new boys of Amateurs Dookie & Longerenon4 Old Collegians. Often producing passages of play which leave other teams floundering, scores are not an indication of their potential - after all, any football team who has only played five games together must take a while to settle down. 21 aill Briefs A certain Brunswick player is driv- ;},g this reporter crazy every week. 1-le informs me of how many games he has to go to get his first hundred itp. Knock it off Abba!! Apart from having a few injuries commonwealth Bank had to put up with the misfortune of missing Gympie at the game. We all hope to see ~-our smiling face again soon Brian ; besides who else down at the club cnn stir as well as you? Old Camberwell Reserves came good last week with a hard fought win over Old Xav's. Playing in poor conditions they clung to a one goal lead in a very low scoring game. It was good to see the determined way the boys went about returning to the winning list despite two bad losses in previous weeks. Highlights from the Rame: Robo's marking and ruck work : The Cat's solid play in defence ; Sug- ~n's inspiring captancy; and Paul Vi-cent's attacking drive from centre half back. Finishing with fifteen fit men, St. Kilda CBO's Reserves were still able to trounce National Bank by fortythree points. After our herculean effort, Heinz had us crawling in the mud looking for his lost contact lens, which : found in a most unlikely place, still in his eyeball. Thanks Billy, you saved us from a long search. Macca's effort of four goals in the last quarter after playing the first three auarters ai full-back is worthy of note. The older they get the better they >>Tay. Old Brighton will testify to this. especially in the case of Keith "Kav" Peachey. Each week Keith shows the vouna blokes that he is not finished vi.-t. It's great to see him playing so Keep it un. mate. Bad luck for Old Trinity's "Jamie" Cox who broke his ankle against West Frunswick, never mind Jim perhaps ~= hen they mend it they will straighten,~ our kicking at the same time, to enable you to get yourself back in front of goals. Well skippered Jimmy LoridkoFVski, plus good 100 minutes of football from Noel (Flasher) -Wilcox and new boy Robert. The back pocket failed to save what was a lamentable Glenhuntly exhibition. If a "Londkowski!" can play, and well, surely the rest can!! National Bank will be strengthened by the return this Saturday of "Croweaters" Bob Lloyd and Bob Evans, both boys have been visiting that other State. With Brian Sheehan really tiring in the centre we're hoping for that elusive victory. Continuing their good showing of previous weeks, Tooronga-Malvern Juniors whitewashed AJAX with an intelligent display of wet weather football, which suggests they will be no chopping block for other sides in future. It was nice to see more members of the committee in attendance too. If a notice appears in the daily papers' lost and found columns referring to the loss of good teamwork and an important match, it will be Assumption Reserves coach Lindsay Howard trying to locate the spark which had taken his team to four great victories on end and the top of the ladder. Even noted mudlark "T.W." Fitz disappeared in the mire after a great first quarter. The good players were few, although Mick Murray and Peter Patterson admitted no peer on the day and Jack "Old Timer" Evans, although outmarked early, gave a hard working performance in the last line of defence. Congratulations to "ROB" Reserves on another great win (12 goals this time). Keep ~it up chaps it looks like an undefeated premiership for this, our first year. Colin Davis and Bob Ashby showed great form and were a tower of strength all day. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER -May 23, 1970 Page 21

22 AMP exploited a new type of forward play against Brighton. Pack the forward line instead of the backline and give your full forward no breathing space at all. "Flea" Metcalf and Gerry McHugh were two who turned in great displays across the halfback line and "Porter" Crompton lifted the roving division when switched. Others ~vorth a mention were Brian Ahern who had a go all day, Alan Sloan who played desperate football for 100 minutes and goal-sneak Max from limited opportunities. Kevin Wcston wins this week's booby prize - a large packet of Drive from St. Bernard's for turning up in black knickers before the day's romp in the mud. Collegians football club held a reunion last week when nearly 5 04 invitations to attend our game were sent, and the old boys cowe hom to The Trott from far and near for a day of reunion with their former club mates, and had a good clay. It was a pity we could not celebrate the day with a win but despite a fine display by the players in the last quarter the win was not ours. Congratulations to Caulfield, nevertheless. Our club would like to thank s Z Iorgan ( Cr,-,,nb's secretary), -, - (for the signs he did for us) for working all day selli food to the hungry, she was ably assisted by Mrs Powell (Brian Powell's wife). Thanks folks for your effort, also Warrick Nutcheii, Brian Po-arell, and our President Basil Coombs. The sight of Randell Castle's mane streaming in the wind as he dashes from the backline is becoming a familiar and very welcome one for Ivanhoe supporters. Randell took a little persuading before coach Ron Lucas convinced him he was a full back. Now he has settled in like an old timer. Good to see the continued winning form of the Monash Reserves and Monash Juniors. In the Reserves, coach Roy Harper has settled in well, and is moulding the team into a strong combination. The Juniors continuing under Pete Wells are again the power of the Junior Section. Pete has developed fine team spirit and enthusiasm is high. Monash are very fortunate in having such talente d coaches supporting Sam B irtles. The Derrimut boys Mick Ginni. and Ian Harvey certainly unearthe a promising find for St. Bea - ~ when they recruited Ray King. I n first ever game at full back Ra y an excellent job last week in holding the section's leading goal kicker to one goal. Although it is rumoured Dino-out with a broken hand-was not so impressed everybody else was very pleased with the performance. All please note that "Jexy" BE- ;- kert in Round 2 kicked 2 goals and ot one goal as was shown in the Reco Incidentally, "J2xy" took his fit~ I overhead mark for the year last Saturday, this being a five-fold improvement on any other (and there have been plenty) season's effort. As unelected captain of St. Kilda CBOC's deserves, Jexy has a perfect coin tossing record - one correct call which was our only loss for the Y e Tech's centre half back really car to life last week. His fearless, dash' ig style of football kept the ball he~ling towards the forward line, only to see his team-mates play from bebind to lose. U.H.S. Old Boys recruit Rod Hanton proved he will be a great asset to the side this year. Rod, a schoolboy, playing only his second game showed his ability with strong, cool, football in the back pocket last week when under pressure. -~~~ ~RM ~~~n F~^O'TSILLER-May 23, 1970

25 FROM HERE AND THERE 150 UP TO O.M. PLAYER Harvey Tartakover plays his 150th game for Old Melburnians today. Harvey has given great service to the club both as a player and a committeman. If he keeps up the form he has shown this season we might get another 50 games out of him! Good luck, Harvey. KEW PLAYER REACHES 100 Congratulations from all at Kew to Alan Rodda on reaching 100 games today. "Rod's" never-say-die attitude, together with his ability to create a loose man has proven a big headache to many sides. We hope you keep it up for the next 100. "Snow", the oldest Blood of all is not bleeding after last week's effort, Bleeder, my friend. Yours truly did a little spying last week to try and find the reason why the juniors can't notch a win, but was unsuccessful, even thought the matter was carefully and thoroughly deliberated upon until the early hours of the morning at the home of "Peter Crayfish" with the Senior one. Darkie the performing seal had his usual "Dago" before he went "Flako". Player McGuane came into the discussion at some stage of the proceedings, and it was decided that he could turn into a handy player for the uner 19's. Our senior reserves have formed into a steady sturdy combination, and it was pleasing to see "Fordy's bung knee" stand up to the test. Daniel "Doone" Gteeson turned in a ripper (right and left) and Mal "Cakes" Purcell put three out of twelve through the middle. Fairfield will have our Blood if they can, Poison Pen. Collegians ground (Harry Trott Oval),was the scene last Saturday for their reunion day. One of the largest crowds ever seen and the Trott was there to make the day a success. A lot of work was involved. "Wacker" Mitchell, despite the fact that he is no longer on our committee, worked hard all day helping to set up things. The bag of Spuds was won by Dr. Vivian, club M.O. The ear bashing was won on the bell by the silent one club member Henry "The Yak Yak" Sanders from "Jawbone" Jack McCann. Our thanks to the ladies at afternoon tea, to the employees of the Albert Park Trust, and, of course to the weather, despite being cold no rain arrived during the day, even the Treasurer was known to smile. Well once again, one and all, thanks for a good day. St. Kilda CBOC's men in white, Messrs Gurry and Spence are doing a great job running the boundary for our first and reserves sides. Kevin and Bernard are always correctly attired, which is a pleasant change from the "uniforms" of some opposition boundary riders. Special mention to Footseray Tech's ladies who run the stall in allweathers. Their presence is most welcome to the supporters on a cold afternoon where their tea and coffee is always ready. Keep up the good work girls, you're most appreciated. Hi "P.P." and "G" - This is "B". All smiles again this week - Fairfield won - we had a visit from the boss too, he called in to see the last few minutes. It's nice to see he can take the time out to have a look at us socalled lower clubs. I hope both you young chaps are smiling too on this day, too, if so, it means we are all winners. I have received an important despatch from our two weary travellers (they haven't left yet)! Aren't their travels getting exciting? Little Bleeder wants me to tell Gympie he was elected goal umpire yesterday, he says he did a good job, but that he hasn't thawed out yet. See you next week. - The Bleeder. 26 From Here and There - c ntinu j] Commonwealth Bank would like to thank North Melbourne for their hospitality after the game last week, and even though I did not win the raffle, I would like to buy a ticket from such a lovely looking girl as Pauline. She was even in agreement with me that our Reserves deserved their win. No club can exist without off the field helpers. St. Pat's (Ballarat) has some real fine stalwarts. Men like Tony and Bill Joyce, Des (Rocky Delahunt, Ed Williams, really give the club fantastic service off the field organising and managing. There are others who should appear on this list whose help is often unnoticed especially Mrs Van Suylen who looks after the jumpers so well ; Mary Joyce and Mary Anne Fry who are always giving a lot of time and help. Our very special thanks to all these people. Still winning in senior ranks, Gym. pie old chap. it does not take long for the word to get around sleepy hollow, even my relations are not talking to me (thank my lucky stars), and are thinking of disinheriting me (that has saved me a few quid). I shall let Pussycat work that one out if he has the new knowhow. Anyway I shall not try to do a "Lou Lou" on Geelong again this year or they might declare war and invade us. In a low scoring game at Glenhuntly, Parkside with Jim "Hawkins" Byrne, that new St. Pat's recruit (you can't have him "Bottles") playing well, and Len Stenlake getting a kick or two, held out the opposition when the rain came to score by the narrow margin of seven points. Till next week, Poison Pen. AOA Hi / t Page 26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-May 23, 1970
