p RMQHD'S SECOND HALF BEATS CAUL GRAM Coburg Shaky Until Last Term Close Call For Several Leaders - One Beate n By GEORGE MeTAGGART After trailing Caulfield Grammarians in the first half Ormond showed great improvement after the interval and ran out winners by 14 points Coburg were not over-impressive for three quarters against Collegians bu t turned in a strong last quarter when they kicked 9-2 to 1-2 and won by a big targin Several leading teams had close calls, and one of them, Old Trinity, suffered defeat Ormond's poor kicking got them into trouble and they were 25 points behind Caulfield at half-time but they added 5-9 to a goal in the third term, and went further ahead in the last quarter Collegians were within 8 points of Coburg early in the last quarter but then Coburg cut loose and doubled their three-quarter-time score to finish with the remarkably accurate score of 18A De La Salle and Old Paradians battled out a low scoring even game They were level at quarter time and and De La led by 5 points at the interval, but broke away in the third term to lead by 19 points Parade struggled valiantly to wipe off their leeway in the last quarter but went clown by a point Melbourne High's inaccurate kicking robbed them of the chance to score a big win over University Blues, who put in a poor first half High led by 17 points at half-time and threequarter-time and just managed to hold the Blues off to win by 3 points Monash University opened well at Ivanhoe and led the home side by 10 points at half-time but Ivanhoe gradually wore them down and won in a close finish by 8 points Alphington gave Geelong a fright when they led for more than three quarters of the game Geelong were 26 points down at the last change, but rattled home in a great finish to add 8-1 in the final term and win by 17 points Old Scotch were also in trouble against Kew until the third quarter when they came away and scored by 15 points University Blacks and Old Xaverians were engaged in a torrid struggle with the Blacks emerging winners by 7 points Uni High kicked only 2 points against Tooronga-Malvern in the first half, and were 5 goals behind, but they added 5 goals in the third quarter and struggled home by 3 points Old Haileybury put up a poor showing against St Kilda CBC, who were always well in command and won by nearly 10 goals National Bank surprised Assumption and led throughout to score by 17 points Old Trinity crashed against AMP Society who opened up a winning lead in the first quarter Trinity could not recover from the 6-goal deficit and were beaten by 20 points Old Brighton trailed St Kevin's in the first half but finished too strongly for their opponents and won by 20 points This defeat cost St Kevin's their place in the four Old Geelong moving into fourth position Old Camberwell went away from Elsternwick in the last quarter and won by 3 goals, displacing Elsternwick from the four, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970 Page 3

BALL BRIEFS We beat the gun two weeks ago when we wrote a farewell note to Garry Cartwright He saddled up at Geelong for Alphington Reserves last week, so Perc Adams expressed our good wishes again, whereupon Garry confessed that he doesn't go until Tuesday No further farewells to be extended today or we will be beating Dame Nellie Melba's record! Ken Redford, Chris Shaw and Ian Watson of Old Carey gave good display in the ruck against Hampton Rovers Some of the marks which Ken Redford took (particularly towards the end of the game) were almost unbelieveable in the heavy conditions Chris was not much behind him in the marking department, and Ian played his usual strong game Terry McLeod, back in Footscray Tech's side last week after a long absence proved what a handy footballer he is Returning from the West "Macca" played a good serviceable game in the mud Also better mention the skipper Ken Harris Coming back after injury, Ken is showing his best form in the centre once again De La Salle's "mudlarks" Henry Halasa, Shane Wright and John Lynch played great games against Old Paradians In shocking conditions the trio put themselves in for the ball at all times and set the example for the rest of the team, who rallied Collegians who have completed the century are our skipper Richie Ed-,wards (100 up today against Monash) and Peter Dunn (over 100) and the gentle one Geoffrey Nash (100 against Monash), Rob Webster (100 against Monash) Reserves coach Peter Lucas against Monash will have completed 150 games He has been with the club 9 years and has represented the V AFA in interstate games Wes Roach has to his credit 175 games and in his 10 years with the cli represented his club in V games, so these players and who have stuck to the club a n ed our code of football we si n say on behalf of all thank yo well done, and good luck to tl : ure "Fritzie" Kerr has played 140 games also Strong play by MHS backs last half saved the day in a des game against Uni Blues last Having a wonderful season, stz back Raoer Needham was seer ing numerous marks over his si opponent with Nick Solatgis co ing on his merry way muscled self into his third consecutive on the ground from the hall flank Benny Pascoe and Ian Tu: continued with their weekly m( among the best players also froi backline How about a few for cracking a mention soon After a terrible start, Univ Blues fought back well in the s, half against MHSOB, but just to win the game The revival pleasing, with the players shc more determination than in r games John Leaper dominate, half-back flank, and Ro,ss Macai well on the other one Bruce rill's disposal from his wing was ; and Mike Nicholls took some marks at centre half-forward Barry Church kicked his third from an acute angle we though might make it, but the final sirer too close T-M's winning run skidded to z at "Lake Tooronga" last week though kicking against the tide ii last quarter, we nearly took the from the undefeated leaders witl last kick of the day Gordon 1 played a brilliant game, and it not his fault that the Combine down Page 14 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27,

Doug Bartley surmounted this to play a dashing game on the wing John Van Elden played a fine scouting game around the packs, as did Rob Wilson Phil Knight played a great last half, and Ida showed her vocal brilliance in spite of the slush to break even with the Monash supporters Gradually sneaking towards the very elusive 100-game mark for St Bernard's is Peter Nathan Nobody can deny that "Marts" is certainly the best worker the club has ever had, and now to keep himself in trim he has even turned his hand to running the boundary for the Firsts, after occasional bench-warming with the Reserves Although sometimes a little too keen on the financial affairs of the club, Narts is a very popular club member and one who always has St Bernard's at heart Commonwealth Bank supporters witnessed a more interesting event than the football at the mudheap last week Tom Whitmore's "bird", whilst whilst attempting to start Tom's car flattened the battery Basil and Scoop came up with the bright idea of changing batteries, but put the battery in the wrong way Smoke and confusion reigned Amid advice from illustrious spectators such as Bernie, Merv, "Burnie," Gympie, Lynn, "Crasher" and Sam, a voice from behind the crowd was heard to say, "I have a pair of jumper leads in my car" It belonged to our "speedy" hackman George Howard After this quiet episode "Bur nie" Board went to move his car but bogged, Sam Athans went to his assistance, and also bogged Then the Ampol truck with the oil-heating equipment bogged, so that is why players - the showers were calc after the game With great determination and in telligent handball, Kew Reserves, ad, apting to the conditions overcame the strength of Old Scotch, and provide~ valuable experience to the youn~ players After an inspiring pre-matcl talk by coach Bob Burden the tearr played determidly to beat Old Scotci for the first time in five years Con gratulations on a great win and keel up the good work Assumption Reserves consolidate( their position in the four with a re peat thrashing of National Bank Skip per Johnny "Barrel" Fitz playing hi ; 50th game celebrated with a sparklin= performance, topped off with fou goals The other top performance were by the older brigade : Adriai "Spud" O'Keefe, Johnny "4" Shav and Wally Arnott to the fore "Peep ing Pete" Patterson found enough mw around the ground for the mudpacl he needed to top off his sauna bat] "beauty treatment" of a couple o days previously He won't get mary starters for the mudpath, but there' a waiting list for his next sauna bat': performance 1970 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970 Page 1

Ball Briefs continue d The OM's backline played a major part in the teams win last Saturday With Geoff Cloke again in dashing form on his flank and Garry Austin's complete domination of the air at centre half-back left little for Bob Mackay and Al Thompson to do on the back line Wingers Dave Wilson and Mick Loughlin provided the major avenue for the teams approach to goal Probably the most pleasing feature of the game was an overall improvement in teamwork National Bank forwards played a big part in the "Red Legs" victory over Assumption O C last Saturday Spearhead "Plumber Bill" Mumford finished the game goalless but his efforts helped "Croweater" Bob Evans and Pete Morley to notch three majors apiece Half-back "Sheets" Sutherland turned in a solid game after having had the wind taken out of his sails the previous week Down Fairfield way promotion comes rapidly Take Trevor "Ding- Doug" Bell for instance, he did such a splendid job of running for the Reserves last week that this week he copped the job for the Seniors, and he did a sterling job once again Bob Johnson and Merv Tranter, plus a few others, were in their best form but the scoreboard tells the story Glenhuntly much appreciates the work of Mrs Natihan, Lynette and Glenda with the pies, hot soup, donuts, etc PS What is the boiling point of soup, girls? Old Trinity players and supporters were sorry to hear that Mark Pruden will not be playing again this season due to kidney trouble Bad luck Mark but we look forward to your return next season Another to leave our service in the near future is Phil Cohen who unfortunately is off on a two year "holiday" with the Army Phil's enthusiasm both on and off the field will be greatly missed Page 18 AMP Reserves were jumped by Trinity and although they matched the opposition for the remainder of the match they couldn't reduce the leeway Alan Saxhy and "Herb" Gay were great triers and received solid support from "Mouse" and Mick Johnson The coach was not smiling after the game and may use a sharp axe at selection time this week Great to see the "Fat Lover" back from WA Some Old Brighton players prefer cards to football so it seems Owen "Marty" Millis, Dave "Ocean" Grove, Rick "Little Legs" Trewavas, Graham Willis and Joe "John" Nicholls are all regular players after training each week Unfortunately they play cards better than football Congratulations to Steve Cole who will chalk up his 50th game for Parkside today Steve would have had several more games to his credit had he not been called upon to serve his Country in the field of action in Veitnam All Parksiders are glad Steve returned safe and sound to the club this season, and is kicking a few goals for the reserves as well Hoping you will gain senior selection permanently on today's performance Stevie boy "Do as you're told" Department Jim Kilpatrick of Old Geelong arrived at the Reserves game last Saturday, got his gear out of the car, placed it on the ground behind the car and started talking to his mates Club parking expert Peter Lemon suggests that Jim move his car as it is blocking off the roadway Jim reverses his car to a safer spot The result? One remodelled bag-4 foot long, I inch thick! There was a big smile on coach John McClure's face after last week's win, which enabled Old Camberwell to go into the four Now all we have to do is keep it there THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970

Ball Briefs - continued That old philosophy "All comes to those who wait" proved a truth last Saturday when St Pats veteran Reserve Peter "The Jeep" Hynes got a game in the firsts after many years with the Reserves I believe it was his second game in the Firsts in over five years Well done Pete! Keep up this form! Brunswick'is Kenny Beckett played his last game for the club for a while The poor bloks is off to get married and then he goes into the Army Everybody connected with Brunswick wishes you all the best Ken, to you and your bride to be In shocking conditions, La Trobe Uni held on to an early lead gained in a brilliant second quarter, to win by four goals Best on the day : Nadenbousch, "Twiggy" O'Brien, Bus-Shelter1D Cordon and "Cramps" Pech The Reserves also cracked their first win for some time, "Electricity" Sparkes and "Mr Elegance" Gould playing well David Gordon joined the growing list of Old Ivanhoe players who have played 50 games for the club In the role of acting captain David played a great game both in defence and in the ruck Keeep going for the next 50 Dave In a game in which all players deserve to mention "Big John" Young was outstanding for Tooronga-Malvern Juniors whether on the ball or up forward, capping off a fine performance with three goals He was well supported by Paul Mitchell Steve Doran, Dave Braun, Graham Watts, Les McNamara and Ray Martin Three of the best players against Asssumption again helped fill the bill for the OM's Reserves last week- Barry Gilbert, Harvey Tartakover and Ras Campbell seem to excel in the wet weather Tim Moore who hasn't put in a bad game this year again showed his class with a polished display Les Caldwell played a (and with) a "corker" and Col Pyman put in another consistant game The individual efforts of these players, however, did not make up for the shocking overall lack of team work! Well done R OB's lst Eighteen on a 205-point victory This is the best win we have had in our history, and the way we are going, by no means the last Even Laurie Aghan had a smile on his face at half time, but stil l mentioned the backs were very loosė A great game was played by Mike Bates once again, also Wayne Jarvie, had a field day in the wet Congrats Pete (Foot) Clarke on his two great goals PSGreg Slater How does it feel on the forward line and kicking a coffee scroll for a change It looks as though Old Camberwell Reserves should hold a players' meeting every Thursday night So far two have been held and after each a top team has been defeated First it was Old Xavs and last week Elsternwick Highlights from last Saturday's game : John "The Cat" Mehan's dashing play on the full back line; "Harry" Buckeridge's great marking, especially in the first half; Peter Robinson's ruck work which was the driving force behind the win ; and a strong last quarter which led to victory Although St Kilda CBOC Juniors were beaten by eight goals it was a splendid, dedicated team effort considering that they played with only sixteen men till half-time and seventeen after Time and again the ball was sent up forward to be sent back by two loose men Though tiring at the end and with a couple of players carrying injuries the Sainters finished out the match well "Pete" Field (back from the seniors, Steve Clinch, "Pip" Vine, Chris Halpin, Norm Kennedy, "Hairy" Quirke and Vince Lazzaro stood out THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970 Page 19

UMPIRES CORNER LAWS OF THE GAME A Boots must be inspected in the dressing room s B It is unforgivable for an umpire to turn his back on the play C The fact that the ball, while in transit, has struck or touched an umpire shall not prevent the scoring of a goal or behind This would also apply to a trainer on his way to attend - or attending an injured player D A player may hold the ball indefinately providing he does not run more than 10 yards or is not retarded by an opponent E If the ball is kicked and hits the behind post on the full, it is out of bounds and a free kick shall be given SOCIAL GOSSIP Now I can really retire in peace - because at the recent trial carnival match with my own eyes I saw Graham Warfe's father - Les - standing with Clarrie Ladd, father of Ormond's Kevin, and neither of these amateur stalwarts uttered a word against the umpires I did see it - I still can't believe it Repeat show today Clarrie and Les and I will buy you both afternoon tea! Brian Hagarty if you must smoke a Lionel Rose type of pipe, please be like the ex-champ and buy som e decent weed Haven't you heard about air pollution? Fit umpire caught in last Friday's train strike ran to his city office On cold winter nights, athlete s come at all manner of excuses to stay inside, but I reckon the umpire who wept on my shoulder last Thursday surely must get "The Oscar" - his complaint - all the hard Tuesday night exercises had worn the skin off his rear-end - break it down "D" Often Reserve Section teams think they only have new umpires in cha<< of their games, so have a look at the wealth of experience of the following men - all former "A" Grade umpires - who rather than give the game away, umpire in the reserves to assist with their vast knowledge of the game - Neil Pearson ex Hawthorn and Victorian winger Alan Duckworth ex Parkside player Hec Roberts ex VFL Norm Sutherland ex VF L Ian Marsden ex Kew Amateurs All life members of the umpires' Association They are also members of the umpires' "200 club" John L -- Please ask your girl friend to speak to me, that was a "Ring of Confidence" smile I gave her at the "Park Gate" on trial day! Sorry about the picnic Nice to see two always welcome visitors to our rooms last week - former umpire and assistant coach Harry Nance and top umpire of yesteryear "Gentleman Jim Cooper" many thanks to these men for an excellent picture night To Joe Jamieson of Elsternwick Park also a word of thanks for taking delivery of and keeping the food hot VALE - ALLAN PFEIFER It is with a sincere feeling of loss, we learned of the death last week of Mr Allan Pfeifer time-keeper of the UHS OB Football Club The assistance given to umpires by this grand sportsman was always much appreciated To the older umpires who were privileged to know him for so many years, his sudden passing means the loss of a good friend It is with deepest regret all umpires extend their sympathy to his family VAFA Umpires Associatio n THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970 Page 21

I Briefs continue d Elsternwick thought they had lost a couple of players in the mud at Camberwell, however "Al-Pal" Campbell and Vince `Snorkel' Peters turned up under the shower after the game Nothing seemed to go right for Asisumptian On top of the list of injured or unavailable players there seemed to be a marked dislocation of form by most of the players, and good ones were harder to find than a teetotaller at a brewery picnic Although the Blues trailed all day most supporters felt that any moment true form would bob up and victory would be gained in ten minutes work This was not to be the case Effort from all players will be necessary to take off today's important game The club's congratulations go to Caroline who made off with the club's best backman Kevin Bristow on Queen's Birthday Best wishes to these beautiful people Fairfield's genial secretary Ray "Boofa" Kenney and his wife Margaret are becoming parents again this Sunday (21st) They are adopting a 6- weeeks old daughter Congratulations to both of you from all the club She will be a lucky baby getting parents like you Thanks to Donny Boal and Graham Innes for the "after hours" work at Glenhuntly - and that means both sides of the bar "Barts" gets that mention for a sterling game as safe as ever Darryl Roberts and Dave Morgan were also never beaten on the day All smiles Bleeder buddy Two fine displays against the Wicks except for the final term in the main game when Parkside failed to grind the opposition into the ground to really prove their superiority as the top side I know Fairfield would never let this happen, and I see the Bloods have moved into second posse after their victory last week Our Pirate night was shipwrecked by yours truly who turned up as a roadrunner and railway porter/guard ("Baker Boy" Welsh will tell you I suppose, or maybe Lindsay who got a mention in the Kinsey will report) My story is I was a member of the Pirate's Caribbean Criss Cross Club of Victoria - now never get cross at criss because someone may double cross you - and I'm sticking to it Jim "Hawkins" Byrne and Robert "Captain Kidd" Maxwell, who came with his sunken chest were the best dressed pirates of the night Parkside President Brian "Harry" Lauder walked the plank early in the day to receive a well earned award Dick the head was handy, when Harry decided to paint his wagon, suit and himself, so Brian receives the award of last week, according to "Captain Kidd's" Uncle John Peter Byrne's girl friend took the eye of old Poison, as well as everybody else, when she came attired as Ginger out of Gilligan's Island to the turn Pea wee and whistle to you from that man in white who is always right when he's wrong, Poison Pen Quite a stir down at Old Geelong training a week or so ago when Retailer Cam McMillan produced a jar of hair cream for the boys to use after the shower Two of the "Mop Tops", Dave "Phillis Diller" Hudson and Ian McCracken had no idea what it was for But our flying forward Rick Whalley thought it might be just the thing to keep his beard in place Congratulations to Jim Taylor, Pat Considine and other members of the St Bernard's Social Committee for organising such a great day over the long weekend with the train trip All on board had a great time including the train driver Everybody present undoubtedly is already looking forward to the next function organised by these people as every turn that is now held is a great success Keep up the good work boys Page 22 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970

FLOPil HERE AND THER E OLD BRIGHTON'S NEW ROOMS This week Old Brighton open thei r new rooms and it promises to he a great day This is the result of many years rhard work by the committee, which has certainly not been in vain Let's hope we can have three wins to make it a great day 150 TO T-M DEFENDER ToonoAga-Malvern defender Graeme McDonald played his 150th game for the club last week, and gave his usual solid performance "Macca" has been a very consistent player over the years and has given valuable service to the club Congratulations from all at the Combine CENTURY FOR ORMOND'S TONY VOIGHT Congratulations are extended fro m all at Ormond to Tony Voight on reaching his 100th game Tony, well known as a star full back and also a Victorian representative, has been a great player and is still good for at least 50 more games on his present form Well done Tony St Bernard's extend their' sincere thanks to Essendon Grammar for the use of their oval and facilities last Saturday when a clash of fixtures left the Junior side without an oval Unfortunately we could not capitalise on the gift by notching a win Thanks again Essendon and congratulations Old Scotch Juniors on a good win 100 TO NAT BANKER Congratulations to National Bank back pocket player John Wakefield, who if fit for selection, will play his 100th game for the Bank today John is a clever player and had the honour of playing in the 1968 premiership team He bumped into a stray Assumption head and copped a broken nose last week Set yourself for 10 years and 200 games John Dear Poison Pen and Gympie, 'Tis still a bright Sunday morning, even if it is a bit damp outside Fairfield notched another success, assisted by some good play by Denis "Eager" and Keane (the poor man's Bruce Young) and Larry "Bones" Hume who used his weight unsparingly I see that the strength didn't stick again, maybe they need somebody to hold them up The Red Devils are continuing on their merry way and it could add up to a ding-dong final OLD TRINNITY PLAYER REACHES 10 0 Old Trinity's Neil Hudson plays his 100th game for the club today Neil has been a consistent player over the years but he is one of those "frustrated forwards" who seems to always be picked to play on the back line Congratulations from all at the club "Huddy" and we look forward to many more fine games from you in the future CENTURY TO OLD BRIGHTON SPARE PART This week Old Brighton's Clive 7'aylor plays his 100th game Clive has been a club stalwart for almost eight years now and has been a great team man In the last few years he has played in almost every position with the Reserves, and has done it well Clive was married recently but this has not dampened his enthusiasm nor has it detracted from his form Although he has joined the older brigade of players at Brighton it looks as though the next hundred will be even better Well done Clive 100 GAMES AT ST KEVIN'S Jack Power's game against Old Brighton last week brought up his 100 with St Kevin's Old Boys It was a typical one hundred per cent effort and there were few enough of them last week A very keen clubman, Jack is treasurer this year and has served on the general committee for the previous four years He is known as a very moderate and temperate fellow Page 24 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970

From Here and There - continued Parkside did the wrong thing by my West Brunswick mates by keeping them goalless, and I see Fairfield also won well Have got a good bet going at the moment - McFarlane of Coburg to kick a century before Hudson of that other competition Today I'll find out just how good the Baby Cats profess to be Given dry weather and no wind, I'll go for Commonwealth Bank to cause the upset in B Section -Gympie CENTURY TO PARADE RUCKMAN Congratulations to Old Paradians Reserves' ruckman John Arthur who played his 100th game last Saturday 100 TO MELBOURNE HIGH CAPTAIN Congratulations to MHS captai n Johnny Cooper on playing his 100th game last Saturday John started with the club in the Juniors and has come up through the ranks to reach the II Briefs continued ultimate goal of captain and committeeman He made his day complete by kicking his 75th goal after taking a great mark right on the siren in the 3rd quarter, and after the match was presented with the club's 100 game "mug" trophy CAR PARKING Cars must be parked as directed at Elsternwick Park, otherwise they will be refused admittance to the ground DUTIES OF RUNNERS The duty of an Official Runner is to carry messages from the coach to players and NOT to engage in altercations with players The runner, in carrying such messages, must take the shortest possible route to the player concerned, and leave the field immediately after delivering the message Wayne Jones made light of a recent shoulder injury as he headed a determined Ivanhoe Reserves defence last week Backed up by Ron Brentnall and Grant Borchers, who are burning every week, Jonesy set the pattern that led to a fine win "Well done" Brunswick - last week's win in shocking conditions was a good team effort, with every player contributing something for the club Big Keith (Stretch) Weybury and Bruce (Skull) Watt stood out and created many opportunities for others A dazzling performance by "the tank", Ian Chanter in the Parkside Reserves last week has certainly enhanced his chance of gaining senior selection shortly If Ian, another of the many fine players produced in Parkside's first under 19 side for several years last year, continues his dashing displays he will be in line for picking up one of the many major trophies awarded by the club SPECIAL MATCH NEXT WEEK Another Special Representativ e Match between teams selected from members of the Carnival Training Squad will be played at Elsternwick Park, next' Saturday, July 4, at 2 p m The match will be preceded by a Junior Section 1 Match, Ormond v University which has been transferred from the following week's round Players and followers of Amateur football are urged to attend and see the players who will represent Victoria in the A A FC Carnival at Perth from July 19th to July 23rd in action Page 26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 27, 1970
