CO BURG, ST BERNA RD'S FIGHT FOR FOURTH PLACE Parade safe, 0,lues, North, out of it Cut-Throat Games Toda y By GEORGE MeTAGGART Coburg and St Bernard's are still fighting for fourth place and meet at Coburg today to decide who will meet Old Paradians in the First Semi-final at Elsternwick Park next Saturday Parade made their position in the four safe when they scored by 27 points from North Old Boys, putting North out of the running Coburk beat University Blues by 10 goals to end the Blues' hopes Many of the fours in other sections are still undecided, and in some cases the last-minute contenders for places meet in real cut-throat encounters Parade were surprised by North's spirited opening, which gave them 3 goals before Parade scored But they recovered to lead by 13 points at quarter-time and added 6 goals in the second term to be 38 points in front at the interval Parade went further ahead in the third quarter and looked to have the game well won when they led by 9 goals at the last change North hit back in the final quarter to add 6 goals but Parade won by 27 points Coburg and the Blues staged an even first half, with Coburg 9 points in front but they cut loose with their play-on game in the third quarter to add 10 goals and leave the Blues floundering Melbourne High kept with St Bernard's in an even, low-scoring first half, but St Bernard's broke away to add 5 goals in the third quarter and maintained this advantage to the end, winning by 31 points A 6-goal burst in the second quarter put Ormond 23 points ahead of Monash Blues at the interval, but Monash fought back strongly in the third quarter to get on equal terms They continued to worry Ormond until well into the last term but they tired in the closing stages and Ormond finished well to win by 25 points Ormond were right on the target early, kicking 7 goals straight before their first behind was posted, and they were 91 at half-time Caulfield were slow to start against De La Salle but had gained a 17-point lead at half-time But they did a lot better in the second half and ran out easy winners by nearly 9 goals Old Scotch missed the chance to make their position in the four safe when they failed by 10 points against Tooronga-Malvern, whose accurate kicking (147 to 1115) helped considerably Geelong overwhelmed Old Trinity to the tune of 12 goals, but Trinity still have a slender chance of pushing Old Scotch out of the top bracket Kew beat Collegians by 5 points but University Blacks and Ivanhoe were not troubled to score big wins over Old Carey and Uni High respectively Reservoir Old Boys had only 9 points to spare from Fairfield, although they had 14 more scoring shots St Kilda CBS beat National Bank by 15 points to end Bank's final four hopes and Power House, Old Xaverians and Assumption all scored big wins Old Brighton scraped home from St Kevin's by only a point and La- Trobe Blacks beat Parkside by 16 points AMP Society handed out a shock to Old Ivanhoe, who went under by 5 goals ANZ Bank gave State Savings Bank a fright, State winning a highscoring game by only 5 points THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - August 19, 1972 Page 3

North Brunswick kept themselves in the running when they scored an 8- point win over Monash Whites, and virtually knocked the Whites out in doing so Elsternwick beat Old Mentonians by 22 points but Mentonians held their place (now only on percentage) Junior Section leaders, Power House, pipped St Bernard's by a point and St Bernard's dropped down to third Ormond scored a convincing 34-point win over Monash University and are now second There were no surprises in Section 2 and even Old Brighton's big score of 3115 (201 points) won't help them into the four Coburg and University Blues also recorded big totals In the Reserve games, Ormond beat Monash Blues by 10 points, University Blacks easily beat Old Carey, Geelong beat Old Trinity by 21 points, St Kevin's beat Old Brighton by a goal, LaTrobe Reds crashed badly against Old Camberwell and Elsternwick beat Old Mentonians by 6 goals Several cut-throat games to decide final four placings are on the programme for today Coburg are at home to St Bernard's and the winners will saddle up against Old Paradians in the First Semi-final next Saturday Old Scotch, a game ahead of Old Trinity, will need to beat Collegians to be sure of holding their place Trinity play Old Carey University Blacks meet Geelong at Elsternwick Park Blacks are safe on top but if Geelong lose they could drop to third, as Ivanhoe, level with them on points, are at home to Tooronga-Malvern St Kilda CBC, two points ahead of Old Xaverians, are at home to them and must win to hold their place Power House meet Assumption in another key game, with second place going to the winners Parkside and Alphington are level on points with Parkside leading on percentage They meet at Parkside, and the top two teams, Old Brighton and Brunswick, are also opposed Two more fourth place contenders, Old Mentonians and North Brunswick, will also fight it out today Old Scotch Juniors have little chance of making it now They trail Monash by four points and nearly 5 %, and have the bye today, while Monash appear in little danger of defeat UMPIRES CORNE R Last Sunday about 40 umpires and friends attended the golf day at Torquay which was followed by a bar-b-que at the home of David Dressing's parents Star player was Bill Mason who shot a 43 for 9 holes Booby prize was won by John Lockett with a score of 154 for 18 holes Phillip Rowell was attended by a most charming caddy Miss Sue McLean Steven Cordner seemed to have a set of rules for himself and another set for his opponent Steven and Phil gained nothing by outdriving the coach off the tee Brian Nicholls was smarter, he let the boss win Ian Simpson was caught kicking the coach's ball into the bunker, probably because last week he was made to have his hair cut We thank David Dressing for his fine organisation and also his parents for the use of their home Congratulations this week to Don Dodds and John Posetti who have been elected to our highest honour - "Life Membership" Both men have umpired B Section Grand Finals and been in our senior ranks for some years Don has given great service to our social functions whilst John was secretary of the Umpire's Association for a number of years Fellow life members will welcome them into their ranks at the annual dinner As the 1972 season draws to a close we congratulate Graham Simpson and his committee on a job well done As president of our association Graham accepted the duties of office and carried them out in a friendly and firm manner Again as in previous years we are indebted to Mr and Mrs Fullerton for their assistance to all umpires Though at times we try their patience they always come to our assistance, Mr and Mrs Fullerton - thank you To Mr Brian Lebrocq and his umpire committee we also owe a great deal, this most difficult task is well done by these gentlemen who give so many hours each week attending to us Not only do they see umpires on Saturdays, but also visit us regularly at training nights To Mr George MeTaggart, editor of The Amateur Football, go our thanks and appreciation for allowing us "our corner" Page 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - August 19, 1972

BALL BRIEFS DOUBLE CENTURY TO DAVE BERRY OFIVANHOE Last Saturday week David Berry was one of the best players afield for his 200th game with Ivanhoe Ivanhoe club is beginning to look upon Dave like old wine The older he gets the better he goes Last year he took off the club best and fairest and came out to captain the team for 1972 For years his dedication to the club has been an inspiration and one of his greatest strengths is in his refusal to accept defeat Time and time again he has produced his best football when the odds, have been against the side Just keep turning up "Solid" and continue to pop through those little 75-yard drops (Never mind Burnsie's punt kicks) A big thank you from the club and all the best for the future 150 UP TO GLENHUNTLY FORWARD Jim Rose plays his 150th game for Glenhuntly today Jim has starred in the centre and on the forward line since joining the club in 1965 He has missed only one game through injury but had a six week rest this season at the pleasure of the Tribunal A fi e ry player, Jim proved last Saturday that he is quickly returning to form and will be a key player in the finals 150 TO ORMOND CAPTAIN Ian Cameron who has been Or m ond's captain for the past few seasons, played his 150th game against Monash last Saturday Ian has given Ormond tremendous service, both as a committeeman and player and captain He has represented Victoria and is especially an inspiration to younger players with his courage, talk and encouragement Ian has just come back from injury and is determined to lead Ormond to their second successive premiership this season ST KILDA CHAMP TOPS THE 150 MARK reached career his long andyllustro rl st1ew won in e eek member of our last senior premiership side, captain in 1970 and 1971 and currently displaying grand form in his role at centre half back, "Hairs" looks assured to reach the double ton in his present form Incidentally since relinquishing his bachelorhood, Phil's wardrobe has been transformed into a series of stunning out fits due at least in part no doubt to the lovely Mrs C's influence Well done Phil, a top effort 100 GAMES TO MH S UTILITY Congratulations are extended by players and supporters alike to Trevor Read who runs out today to play his 100th game with Melbourne High "Readie", a great team player, and known to many as "Mr Versatile" has played mostly as a ruck rover although he is no stranger to the half-back or half forward lines Well done Trev, we hope you can now go on to make your games ta l200! l y CENTURIES TO FAIRFIELD STALWARTS All at Fairfield would like to congratulat e Denis (The Menace) Keane on making his two hundredth game with the Bloods The same goes for Noel Wykes on the occasion of his hundredth And if you will excuse me there was one slipped through, when I wasn't in top form Alan Jones who made the ton, Jonesy made it a double - his wife Sandra presented him with a son during the last fortnight A M P CENTURY A great stalwart in Dave Crompton this week sneaks back into the side for the last game, to become a member of the coveted "century club" The "Porter" has put a lot of years of sweat and dedication to the club behind him and has become one of the most respected players in the A M P FC History His true reward was to be made senior captain for 1972 Players and committee both join to thank Dave for tremendous service and congratulate him on a job well done CENTURY TO NORTH ROVER This week marks the ton for Paul Peasnell, tough and courageous rover for North Old Boys Paul has been an automatic selection for North ever since joining the club, except when recovering from injury One such injury was early this year and now "Nuts" is showing great club spirit by reaching his ton in the reserves so as to qualify for the finals There are many games left in "Peasa" and North is richer for the fact After six years Assumption Reserves coach Lindsay "Silver Tongue" Howard plays his 50th game Unfortunately Lindsay's brilliant career has been limited by his ability to incur injury and we have never seen the best of his football However, we have all seen what a magnificent bloke Lindsay is, by his outstanding enthusiasm and determination to see the blue and gold do well, both on and off the field At this rate it is doubtful if we will see another fifty games from Lindsay, but we hope he continues with the club in the same manner as he has SAINT TOPS THE TON Robin Harrison, St Kilda CBOC utility, plays his one hundredth game to conclude the home and away games today Robin's story is one of determination to succeed A few years back he was rarely selected in the Reserves and only less club spirited players not turning up got him a game Yet in three seasons he has become a senior winger, turning in many fine games in the senior and reserves sides An inveterate punter, Robin's selections seem to suffer the same leg trouble at the end of their races as Robin often has at the end of his games To reach this milestone at such an early age is a great feat and typical of Robin's tenacity Congrats on a fine performance Monash congratulates Garry Rothman on reaching his 50th game today Garry has been a very enthusiastic clubman and a talented winger Well done, "Shags" THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - August 19, 1972 Page 17

BALL BRIEFS (continued) TWO MORE CENTURIES AT ALPHINGTO N If they manage to get their injuries right in time Noel Alsop, captain, inspiration and cripple for most of the season, and John Skerry, game, cheerful and winger of renown, will play their 100th games for Aiphington today The club is proud to have these sportsmen in our team, credits to our club and the game Today's game sees Footscray Institute of Technology lose two of its most valuable players over recent years Lloyd Andres and Ian Marley both leave us for other ventures Lloyd (G & D) who has been captain of the club is a player who always gives 100 % and is a fine example to all other players Ian (Dead Eye) whose determination and unselfishplay never ceases to amaze, will be sadly missed by all who have played beside him To these players go our best wishes and heartfelt thanks for a job well done Congratulations to Old Trinity's Darren ty[acmenaman who played his 50th game for the club last week Darren's football career has been interrupted by National Service Training, but since his return from the Army he has produced all his old skill and pace Old Haileybury congratulate two club stalwarts on attaining their 50 games Bob McKay, although more "light-hearted" than on his arrival at the club, has made his weight felt both on and off the field His service includes a season as captain-coach of the Reserves and a season as team manager of the Seniors Gets his kicks more by anticipation than speed these days Well done "Macca" Mark Travis, playing his best football ever, is showing distinct brilliance in consistent displays in the Reserves He has even been seen kicking the odd goal Keep it up "Hawk-eye" We look forward to many more years of valuable service from these two players "Peeping-Pete" Patterson played his 50th game for Assumption last week The name first joined the club in 1970 and has seldom missed a game in his fifty games he has also kicked 21 big ones and given away more than can be counted At Peter's young and tender age we will see many more games from him Well done, "Peeper" St Kilda CBOC's senior boundary umpire, Bernard Spence, turns out in his usual perfectly attired fashion for the 50th occasion against Old Xavs this week Our club is indeed fortunate to have the services of Bernard whose unobtrusive efforts are well appreciated by field umpires who have often favorably commented on his efficiency and competence Bernard is a credit to himself and his family, who by the way serve and support the club well each week Congratulations Bernard, keep up the good work Kevin Kinlock, one of Brunswick's greatest ever players retires after today's game In a career spanning 18 seasons and 282 games Kevin has played in most positions, held many club offices, and this year is captaincoach of the Reserves His most notable achievement was to captain the 1970 premiership side, but the true character of the man was seen when the club was "down" Without his efforts and those of a few others like him the club would not be what it is today To Kevin and his wonderful wife Betty, the club offers a big "thank-you" 6 } J~ ;' r~ve 19 Brand Footballs THE ONLY BALL USED BY BOTH THE * VFL & * VFA IN THE 1970 GRAND FINALS COLLiNGWOOD v CARLTON P'RAHRAR! v WILLIAMSTOW N 2 Page 18 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - August 19, 1972

s Parkside (36, 112 The "Fight for the Four" is by no means over in many of the Sections, and there are still 65 teams in the running for the 56 positions which carry the right to play off in the finals Of course, the chances of some of the contenders for finals berths is rather slender, but it's difficult to predict with any certainty what will happen in football Anyway, today's games will settle the issue Strangely enough, with one round to be played last season, there were 65 teams still in the fight, exactly the same position as applies today AT A GLANC E Today's games for teams in the running for the final fours are listed below Home games are shown thus (H) after opposing team The match at Elsternwick Park is shown thus (E) utter opposing team A SECTION Ormond (62, 1565%) University Blues (H) Caulfield Gram (60, 164 6) Old Paradians (H) Old Paradians (42, 104 5) Caulfield Gram Coburg (40, 111 7) St Bernard's O C (H) St Bernards OC (36, 110 9) Coburg Old Ivanhoe Gr (44, 115 5) AJAX (H) Glenhuntly (36, 1005) AMP Society (H) F SECTION Old Camberwell Gr (68, 193 1) Dookie & Long OC Elsternwick (52, 1392 ) Monash White s St Bede's OC (38, 109 5) LaTrobe Red s B SECTION Old Mentonians (32, 92 3) University Blacks (56, 1334) North Brunswick (H) Geelong (E) North Brunswick (32, 83 6) Geelong (48, 1445) Old Mentonian s Ivanhoe (48, 1203) JUNIOR SECTION I Tooronga-Malvern (H) Power House (52, 167 7) Old Scotch Coll (44, 1213) University Black s Collegians (H) Ormond (48, 140 0) Old Trinity Gr (40, 1157) Hampton Scout s Old Carey Gram (H) St Bernard's OC (48, 134 6) C SECTION Ivanhoe (H) Reservoir Old Boys (68, 228 2) Monash University (48, 121 2) National Bank (H) MHS Old Boys (H) Assumption OC (46, 118 8) Old Scotch Coll (44, 116 4) Power House a bye Power House (44, 113 5) JUNIOR SECTION 2 Assumption OC (H) North Old Boys (64, 190 2) St Kilda CBOC (40, 116 8) Beverley Hill s Old Old Xaverians Xaverians (38, 113 (H) University Blues (56, 3344) 7) AJA X St Kilda CBOC Coburg (52, 213 5) Old Brighton D SECTION Tooronga-Malvern Gr (56, 140 Brunswick (H) 0) Caulfield a by Gram (52, 131 0) e Brunswick (52, 133 6) Old Brighton Gr A RESERVE SECTIO 9) Ormond (54, 1728 N LaTrobe Blacks (42, 107 ) Footscray ITOB University Blue 8) Coburern54 2) Alphington (H) St,ards 15 5 OC (1-I) Alphington (36, 100 B North Old Boys (52, 128 9) Parkside 1) De La Salle (H) E SECTION Monash Blues (44, ) MHS Old Boys ) Marcellin OC (60, 141 ANZ Bank B RESERVE SECTION State Sav Bank (52, 1375) University Blacks (60, 229 4) West Brunswick Geelong (E) Geelong (60, 149 9) University Blacks (E) Old Scotch Coll (56, 264 5) Collegians (H ) Old Trinity Gram (40, 122 7) Old Carey Gramm (H) C RESERVE SECTION St Kilda CBOC (68, 3355) Old Xaverians (H ) Reservoir Old Boys (52, 167 7) National Bank (H ) Power House (48, 136 5) Assumption OC (H) Old Xaverians (44, 132 2) St Kilda CBOC Assumption OC (44, 119 3) Power Hous e D RESERVE SECTION Parkside (64, 242 1) Alphington (H) Hampton Rovers (50, 1459) Old Geelong Gr Old Geelong Gr (48, 160 4) Hampton Rovers (H) St Kevin's Old Boys (44, 146 9) St Patricks O C Old Brighton Gr (44, 136 9) Brunswick (H ) E RESERVE SECTION State Sav Bank (56, 154 3) West Brunswic k Old Ivanhoe Gr (44, 132 1) AJAX (I-I) AJAX (44, 1145) Old Ivanhoe Gr Marcellin OC (40, 125 9) ANZ Ban k F RESERVE SECTION Monash Whites ( 64, 232 8) Elsternwick (H) Old Camberwell Gr (56, 153 3) Dookie & Long OC Elsternwick (48, 1526 ) Monash Whites LaTrobe Reds (36, 111 1) St Bedes OC (H) Old Mentonians ( 32, ) North Brunswick (H) T W SHERRIN' S "KANGAROO" BRAND FOOTBALL S Iseauu ueuasuu uunoeuuu mnnnnun rannnn n e ea ann FIRST BALL MADE FOR AUSTRALIAN GAME - still Leads The Field u auruu u uuunau uanu n a en nsna an e THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - August 19, 1972 Page 19
