3 IVANHOE PRESS GAULFIELD G ~MM ORMOND'S STRAIGHT KICKING ROUTS GEELONG Reservoir recover to draw with Carey Bottom team Ivanhoe, who have not won a match this season, ran Caulfield Grammarians, fourth, to 13 points in the most interesting A Section game last week Geelong were no match for Ormond, whose accurate kicking for goal in the first half, gave them a commanding lead Ormond kicked 11 2 in this period and led by 39 points They went on to win by almost 10 goals Reservoir Old Boys were held to a draw by Old Carey in a thrilling finish to the game at Elsternwick Park This puts an end to Reservoir's run of 26 wins in succession, but of course they are still undefeated in 27 games (Their last defeat, incidentally, was in the D Section Grand Final of 1971) Caulfield opened up well, and established a 28-point lead in the first quarter but Ivanhoe hit back with 7 goals in the second term They had reduced their leeway to 2 goals at the final change but Caulfield held them off in the last quarter to score by 13 points Geelong were a little disappointing against Ormond, but the visitors' straight kicking in the first half would have disheartened any team (Geelong had done much the same to Monash Blues the previous week, when they kicked 8 goals straight in the second term and were 10-1 at half-time) Monash and St Bernard's staged an even first quarter with the scores level at the change but St Bernard's cleared out in the second and added 56 while holding Monash scoreless This gave St Bernard's a firm grip on the game at the interval, when they led by 6 goals and although Monash put in a spirited finish, St Bernard's were untroubled to win by 38 points THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER By GEORGE McTAGGAR T A 9-goal burst in the second quarter left North Old Boys well in command against University Blues and they went on to a very easy win, although the Blues kicked 5 goals in the last quarter Coburg's small men played a big part in their 46-point win over Old Paradians in a game notable for inaccurate kicking by both sides The total score was 2650, Coburg kicking 1613 and Parade 1020 North are still in top place on percentage fr om Coburg and Ormond, with Caulfield Grammar holding fourth place on percentage from St Bernard's Coburg (second) lead Ormond (third) by a margin of 04 per cent Reservoir couldn't get going in th e first half and trailed Old Carey by 7 goals at half-time They turned what seemed like certain defeat into a draw with a magtiificent second half recovery Each side kicked There was also an exciting finish to the Assumption-Melbourne High game, June 2, 1973 Page 3

4 which MHS won by 3 points Assumption led by 2 goals at the interval but High went to a 5-point lead at three-quarter-time The lead changed hands five times in a "nail-biting" last quarter De La Salle had lost the first five games before pipping University Blacks by a point the week before, but scored a decisive win over Old Scotch, who were out of the four only on percentage De La's winning margin was almost 13 goals The Blacks hit back with a vengeance when they thrashed Collegians by 137 points, while Old Trinity had no difficulty against Kew, beating them by 16 goals Reservoir still hold top place, 6 points clear of Old Trinity, who are now second Old Carey slipped to third and Collegians to fourth Old Brighton knocked Fairfield out of the four when they scored a 53- point win over them, and Old Haileybury's 4-goal victory over Old Xaverians took them into fourth place Parkside were not troubled to score an easy win over Uni High, and retain their place at the top of the list Power House beat Old Melburnians by 50 points and St Kilda CBC won easily from National Bank Commonwealth Bank's run of success was brought to an abrupt halt by Old Geelong, although they scored by only a goal It was only Old Geelong's second win - they broke the ice against Hampton Rovers the previous week Top team State Savings Bank had plenty to spare from LaTrobe Blacks, but Marcellin got a fright from bottom team Brunswick, who ran them to 13 points Marcellin moved up to third, displacing Commonwealth Bank, whose defeat caused them to slip to fourth Alphington's big win over St Kevin's enabled them to hold second place There were no real surprises in E Section, where Old Camberwell beat AJAX by 33 points in the main game ANZ Bank beat Footscray Tech by 2 points to break the ice, and leave the wooden spoon with Footscray Old Ivanhoe were not troubled by Elstern_ wick and Glenhuntly beat West Brunswick by 29 points AMP Society, who had the bye, dropped from first to third, Old Ivanhoe and Old Camberwell climbing over them AJAX's defeat put them down to fourth The top four are level on points but AJAX have played a game more than the other three Top team Fawkner had only 9 points to spare from Dookie & Long who have won only one match Monash Whites beat St Bede's by 16 points and LaTrobe Reds beat University Reds by 7 points to knock them out of the four Their place has been taken by North Brunswick who scored by 34 points over Thornbury Poor kicking cost University Blues the top place in the Junior Section four when they went down to Ormond by 17 points They kicked 614 to Ormond's 10 7 Ormond are now on top on percentage North Old Boys scraped home from University Blacks by only 4 points, and Ivanhoe surprised Power House, beating them by 5 points Old Scotch easily beat Hampton Scouts and Monash University won comfortably from St Bernard's There were some high scores in Section 2, where there were no surprises Coburg kicked a massive 4524 (294 points) against National Bank, Old Paradians scored 3421 (225) against St Bede's and Beverley Hills kicked 2428 (172) in defeating Caulfield Grammar Old Brighton and Parkside easily won the other games from Fairfield and AJAX respectively There was another draw in the Reserves, where Monash Whites and St Bede's each kicked 9 8 Of all the teams in the Reserve Sections' fours, only two suffered defeat - Fairfield went down by nearly 9 goals to Old Brighton and Alphington lost by 4 points to St Kevin's Page 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - June '2, 1973

22 Looking Back By Noel Rundl e 5 YEARS AG O Upsets were the order of the day as the top four teams in 'A' section were all beaten, and four points separated North (8th) from Uni Blacks and Kew (1st) MHSOB (9th) had their first win for the season by 6 points at the expense of Old Paradians Best for MHSOB - Harley, Gilbert and Alan Wilson and for Parade - Ford, Quinlan, Hart Milton Beatie played his 200th game for Hampton Rovers Footscray Tech were undefeated in 'C' section with seven wins, St Kevin's were on top (only one defeat) in 'D', and AMP still had not lowered their colours in `E' The Australian Amateurs retained the ANFC Section 2 Championship Title with decisive wins over Queensland and Canberra Monash (Second) went down in B section by 10 points to UHSOB (third) in a low scoring game to 8 8 Best for the winners were Kinnear, Keddie, and Joslin and for Monash, Whettenhall, McMaster, Thomas Les `Lionheart' Woods, St Kevin's popular captain, played his 150th game 25 YEARS AGO The team to represent Victoria at the carnival in Perth in August was selected as follows:- E Macklin, W Taggart (Coburg), G Judd, K Lewis (Collegians), D Arnold, M Davidson (Hampton Rovers), N Aitken, C Cox (Ivanhoe), E Jane, J O'Brien (Malvern), J Backhouse, G Byrne (MHSOB), J Grainger, E MacGregor, K Rollason (Old Melburnians), C Davey, M Fitchett (Old Scotch), R Rowse, J Stock (Ormond), W Reynolds (Comm Bank), W Laxton (Parkside), G Miller (State Sav Bank), and B Small (Caulfield Grammarians), 10 YEARS AG O University Oval again proved a hoodoo for Old Paradians as University Blacks inflicted Parade's first defeat by 17 points - (in 1972 Parade won their first game on the Uni Oval in 30 years) Higgins, Lawson and Lee starred for the victors while Proctor, O'Brien and Pivetta were the best for the losers Victoria won both interstate games - by 20 points against South Australia after a close game until threequarter-time (best - O'Dwyer, Scanlon, Reid, Turnbull, Malone and Slattery), and by 55 points against Tasmania (best - Craig, Nelson, Willis, Lucas, McColl, Stokes, Halls) Page 22 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - June 2, 1973

23 LETTER TO EDITOR Whilst I know it is not the usual practice for this publication to publish tetters, I hope I may, prevail upon your generosity to bring these cominents to readers The Secretary of the VAFA, Mr Fullerton, has expressed concern to delegates about the practice of club captains over-using their prerogative of replacing club goal umpires Twice this season, this writer has seen the humiliating experience of inexperienced goal umpires being requested to leave the arena On each occasion the field umpire has "all cleared" the decisions, and in conversation after the game agreed that the goal umpire's decisions were technically correct This embarrassing situation has caused the writer to officiate for the remainder of the game and although I have 14 year's experience of actual goal umpiring, I believe it is a young man's game, and clubs should train officials accordingly Why don't all clubs adopt the principle of the Secretary of the VAFA who says: "All clubs should show forbearance to all officials"?
