3 EELONG, NORTH OLD BOYS, HEAD LIST ONLY UNBEATEN, TEAMS AFTER TWO ROUNDS By GEORGE McTAGGART. Geelong and North Old Boys are the only unbeaten teams after the second round of matches played a fortnight ago. North sneaked home by two points after a close struggle with Caulfield Grammarians, but Geelong scored a comfortable and impressive win over Old Paradians, who were runners-up last season. St. Bernard's finished too strongly for Ivanhoe and won the high-scoring game by 15 points, and University Blues lasted better than Monash Blues to be winners by 11 points. Reservoir Old Boys scored another resounding win, this time over Assumption (who were runners-up to them in C Section last season) and gave the suggestion that they may be heading for A Section. J North Old Boys hopped out with 7 goals in the first quarter, but Caulfield had faced a similar leeway in the first round, and recovered well to lead by a point at the interval. Caulfield's aerial ability had served them well but in the second half their forwards let them down, for they kicked only 2 goals from 1 1 scoring shots. In fact, only five goals were scored altogether after the interval. Geelong opened well by kicking 5 goals against the wind, to leave Parade struggling from the outset. They were 8 points behind Geelong at quartertime, and went further into arrears although Geelong fell into the trap of attacking from the wrong flank and missed several chances. Geelong let their opponents off the hook as they relaxed a little shortly before half-time, and Parade took full advantage to score a couple of badlyneeded goals, finishing the quarter only 17 points down. Parade made a determined bid to gain control of the game in the third term but Geelong stayed with them and were in a strong position when they trailed by only 3 points at threequarter-time. Geelong went for the kill in the last quarter and although Parade made a couple of belated rallies, Geelong ran out winners by 4 goals. Coburg and Ormond were level at the interval, but Ormond's better teamwork enabled them to race away with an 8-goal burst in the third quarter, and although Coburg rallied in the last, Ormond held them out and won by 28 points. Monash Blues added 5 goals in the second quarter of a scrambly game to lead University Blues by 1 7 points at half-time, but the Melbourne boys kicked 6 goals in the third term and held on to win by 11 points. 4 ard's 2.6, gave them a lead of 16 points at the interval. Each team kicked 5 goals in the third quarter but St. Bernard's ruck strength gave them a burst of 6 goals in the last term and they scored an exciting win. Reservoir crushed Assumption to retain top place on the B Section ladder, and Collegians won by 7 goals from Kew. Old Scotch were too strong for Old Carey and ran out winners by more than 5 goals. Shocking kicking by University Blacks (12.25) might easily have cost them the game against Old Trinity, who kicked to win by 35 points. Melbourne High opened their account with a 23-point win at the expense of De La Salle. Power House scored an excitinq 1- goal win over Old Brighton and Fairfield beat Old Haileybury by 8 points. Old Melburnians thrashed Old Xaverians, St. Kilda CBC easily beat Uni High and Parkside were too strong for National Bank. State Savings Bank scored a big win over Commonwealth Bank, St. Pat's did the same to Brunswick, and Hampton Rovers were no match for Marcellin. Alphington and LaTrobe Blacks opened their accounts with wins over Old Geelong and St. Kevin's respectively, by substantial margins in each case. St. Bede's kicked a big score (18.16) but it was 31 points short of Fawkner's Monash Whites won easily from University Reds who kicked remarkably well (13.2) for such a windy day. By contrast, Old Mentoniam kicked 12.30, but it was enough tc give them a big win over Thornbury There were some huge scores ir. Junior Section games. University Blues kicked (234 points) against Hampton Scouts, Ormond's score against Ivanhoe was (277 points ; and Coburg kicked (211 points; against Caulfield Grammar. Power House scraped home by a point from Old Scotch and North Old Boys beat Monash University by 2 points. University Blacks trounced last year's premiers, St. Bernard's, by 14 goals. Old Paradians beat Beverley Hills by 16 points and AJAX beat West Brunswick by 3 goals. Among the Reserves, Ormond beat Coburg by 2 goals, North Old Boys beat Caulfield Grammar by 15 points, Kew beat Collegians by 3 points, De La Salle beat Melbourne High by 11 points and Scotch beat Carey by 16 Blacks finished 13 points in front of Trinity, St. Kilda CBC beat UHS by 2 goals and Power House beat Old Brighton by 10 points. St. Kevin's beat LaTrobe Blacks by 15 points, Elsternwick went down to ANZ Bank by 3 points and Old Mentonians beat Thornbury by 14 points. Old Ivanhoe proved too good for Old Camberwell, who were unbeaten in F Section last year. The margin was 28 points. A contrast in kicking played a big part in Elsternwick's 28-point win over ANZ Bank, who kicked to Elsternwick's AJAX also kicked poorly but had 26 points to spare against Footscray Tech, while AMP Society swamped West Brunswick. 13 BALL BRIEFS CENTURY TO AMP DEFENDER AMP Football Club would like t o congratulate Roger (The Lover) Corfield on playing his 100th game with the club today. `The Lover', who has played mostly at centre-half and full back, is in his 7th season with the club, and much to the surprise of his team mates, has trimmed down this year to a slim 17 stone. Last year Roger capped off a fine season by Congratulations from all at Ivanhoe to star defender John Rojo, who plays his 100th game with the club today. "Roje" has come up through the junior sides and reached every players ambition last season by representing Victoria against South Australia and Tasmania. There are still many years of great football ahead of you "Roje"; come to think of it, your future is as big as your head of hair! FIRST ASSUMPTION 150 winning the Reserves Best and Fairest Award with a run-away margin of 18 votes. I'm sure that everyone associated with the club hopes and expects Roger to continue last year's good form in the 1973 and subsequent seasons until he has at least another 100 games under his belt. IVANHOE BACKMAN REACHES 100 Congratulations to Michael Howe from all at Assumption on reaching 150 games. Michael started his playing with University Juniors and has played in F E D C B grades with Assumption. His application and dedication both on and off the field is a credit to himself and a fine example to all at Assumption. 100 UP TO ST. BERNARD'S MAN Congratulations from everyone connected with St Bernard's to Mick Mahoney on his 100th game last week against Ivanhoe. Mick certainly turned on a magnificent display of high marking and his best on the ground performance was one of the main reasons for our great win. Mick's 100 was delayed for a season, as last year he played for Association club Preston, but his desire to play for St. Bernard's was so great that he reckoned one year away was quite sufficient. Congratulations on an excellent 100th game Mick, and let us hope that you continue to pull in many more "screamers" over many more seasons for the black, gold and blue. PARKSIDER'S DOUBLE CENTURY Every Parksider joins with you r correspondent in congratulating the genial giant of Parkside Bill "Snow" McNamara on playing his 200th game today. Anyone who has donned a bootball boot will agree that to play 200 games is a feat to be proud of. "Snow" was one of the mainstays in our two consecutive Reserve Premierships and judging by his early '73 form he is certainly determined to see the club achieve a similar distinction this year. Well done "Snow" - keep the good work going. 100 TO UHS CAPTAI N Today Colin Kinnear plays his 100th game for Uni High Old Boys. There have been many occasions when it looked as if Col would never achieve this goal because, amongst other things, he suffered from a serious knee injury shortly atfer returning from a trip overseas. Col has been captain of the Old Boys on no fewer than five occasions and in 1970, as Captain-Coach, he led the club to its second ever premiership. Once again Col holds down the important job of captain coach and the club confidently believes Colin can lead it back into "B" grade. Off the field C.K., as he's more familiarly known, works extremely hard in the organization of social functions for the club. Several times every season the Kinnear's home is offered as the venue for a club party or B-B-Q, and if this isn't enough Col is presently organizing a sportsman's night to be held at North Melbourne Football Club on May 9 and this is expected to be the social highlight of the season. From UHSOB's point of view it's impossible to thank Col enough for what he has done over the past decade, however suffice it to say that the green and tan guernsey has rarely been worn with greater pride or dedication. Reservoir's rise up to "B" Section has been due considerably to his untiring efforts. Old Brighton extends its congratulations to vice-captain Ian Paroissien and star centre-half-back Geoff Finkemeyer, both of whom reach the 50 game mark today. Ian and Geoff are champion players and champion clubmen and their understanding on the field will continue to destroy the morale of opposing forwards for many years to come. Peter has been with the club since 1970, has been a regular in the senior team, playing almost all his games in the ruck. Congratulations are also due to Peter (Helmet) Henderson, who plays his 50th club game with the AMP today. Helmet, a dashing back-pocket ruckman, joined the club in 1970 from a minor country league. His main claim to fame is his recently adopted style of pressing his jumper on Saturday mornings. Well done, Pete. Let's hope that the next 50 will be as good as the first. The fact that Jimbo is Treasurer alone demonstrates the work that he does for the club. Without injuries Jim's tally of games would indeed be much greater but all Parksider's hope that he can carry on with his early '73 form and help lift the club to greater things. Many congratulations Jimbo, the two hundred is next. 100 UP TO LA TROBE SKIPPER Congratulations to La Trobe's new captain-coach Greg Sceney who played his 100th game for the club against Brunswick. La Trobe doesn't have many veterans and Greg is one of the "oldest" and best players at the Uni. His skill and enthusiasm have always been present and he has shown this in his coaching efforts, both on and off the field. As well as his career in the Amateur's, Greg has represented La Trobe in many intervarsity competitions over the years, captaining quite a few. 18 SNOW'S STOR M Hi team! It's me, Snow. No chance you can remember me, I'm one of them real old stagers from way back. Used to be a bit of a whizz of a player (quote George McTaggart in the "Pink Paper" once, and myself with a few tubes insider me at a footy club ding). Well, to cut the cackle, I'm the Bazza McKenzie of amateur footy. 'Ung me boots up coupla' years ago. But couldn't resist the smell of linament, B.O. and Fosters, so didn't take much "conning" into coaching the seniors. Had the boys really at the peak of condition only to be demolished last Saturdee, really took the wind outa' me sails and brother did I pay outa me missus and the team during the week. They performed like a mobba girl guides. Really discouragin' stuff to be donkey licked in your first game. Even the fellas at work paid outa' on me. Nothin' changed in amateur footy since I donned me pair of Adidas. The umpirin' is still butcher's hook, and even though it may sound like sour grapes, I reckon we wuzz robbed. Tell you what, I'm livin' on me nerves and this is only early in the season. I'm gonna be a nervous wreck by the enda' the season. Betta flash, chinas, till next week and I'll give you'se all another earfull. In the meantime gunna give 'ell to me team at practice from now on -See ya! PRELIMINARY TRAINING SQUAD FOR CARNIVAL The State selectors have already named 43 players as a preliminary training squad for the 12th Australian Amateur Football Carnival which will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday, July 10th, Thursday, July 12th and Saturday, July 14th. Players chosen in the squad will commence training at the Old Scotch Ground, Yarra Park, on Wednesday, May 9th. They will train each Wednesday thereafter until June 6th, after which training will take place each Monday and Wednesday night (commencing Monday, June 11th). Players named in the squad are:- D. 19 UMPIRE'S CORNE R GOAL UMPIRE S It is just as important for a goal umpire to "look the part" as it is for the field or boundary umpires. Dressing in a manner befitting your position-white hat, laundered white coat, dark trousers and shoes. Always stand behind the goal line and in line with the flight of the ball. Keep out of the way of players. Never go out into the playing are a and turn around to watch the ball aoing between the posts - this is unforgiveable. Make up your mind quickly and do not be influenced by players or spec tators. Do not develop any "flash" way of waving the flags, wave them decisively. Make sure you receive the "all clear' 'from the field umpire before raising either one or two flags. You cannot register a decision until the "all clear" is received. Always look for your field umpire and make sure he can see you. Always keep your eyes on the play and your fellow goal umpire, when the play is in his area. It is your duty to see who kicks the ball. McKernan (West Brunswick) was charged with striking J. Stevens (Old Ivanhoe Gram). He was unable to attend the tribunal heading and was suspended until he appears before the tribunal. P. Morris (West Brunswick) was found guilty of striking R. Stevens (Old Ivanhoe Gram) and suspended for four matches. A Special Investigation Committee of the Executive Committee dealt with these reports arising out of Practice Matches. March 31st - G. Dryden (Parkside) was found guilty of striking C. Gross (Alphington) and suspended for four matches. April 1st - R. Whindon (Old Geelong Gram) was found guilty of striking P. Benson (Old Melburnians) and suspended for three matches. HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP WHEN PHONING SCORES! Club representatives, when phoning scores to the Herald can help in three ways. 1. BE PATIENT - There are a large number of calls to handle in a short time. You may find the phone engaged - and when you get through to the number, you may be asked to "Hold the line please". The call before yours on the other line has to be attended to and the scores written down TWICE - on the Herald copy paper and on the VAFA result sheet. 2. ALWAYS INCLUDE THE POINTS - For example points. Remember the scores are not complete without the points - and you will be fined for not having phoned the complete scores - and make sure they are correct - or you will also be fined. 3. Club officials are especially reminded that the only notification they will receive concerning players reported or witnesses required in connection with a report, will be from the umpire on the day of the match. 24 Looking Back By Noel Rundl e 5 YEARS AGO-1968 Keith Harris played his 200th game for Alphington to be the first in the club's history to do so. Another to chalk up 200 was Vin Pilkington, reserves coach of De La Salle. Again among the veterans, Ian Merrick of Coburg retired after 337 games. Ian won nearly every award possible in the V.A.F.A. and his club's best and fairest on many occasions. Jim Fidge was elected to fill a vacancy on the Executive Committee caused by death of Harry Heathershaw. Uni. Blues, 18.15, outclassed Collegians, Best for the victors were Macaw, Moran (6 goals) and Callcott. In "E" section A.N.Z. Bank, (137) "kicked the sweep" against Reservoir Old Boys 5.6 (36) while in "C" section Old Geelong (129) (Laws 7 goals) overwhelmed St. Bernards O.C (83). 10 YEARS AGO games to Barry Dowsing (M.H.S.), Les Addison (A.N.Z.), Les Comte (Alphington), and Graeme Peek (Old Melburnians captain-coach). Jim Nettleton, Uni. High captain, re-appeared after rowing in the successful Victorian King's Cup crew. Collegians, Old Paradians and Old Melburnians were undefeated, three wins apiece. Some of the clubs competing - Kooyong, Pharmacy College, Commercial Bank, East Malvern, Preston, Malvern, Bellfield, E.S.& A. Bank. Down in "E" section St. Bernard's in their first year thrashed Kooyong (175) to 7.3 (45), McManus being the star with 14 goals. 25 YEARS AGO-1948 "A" section captains were Ron Moore (Ivanhoe), Ivan Guest (O.M.), Stan Blayney (Malvern), Gordon Gilmour (Coburg), Denis Cordner (Uni. Blacks), Mike Fitchett (Old Scotch), Bill Nottle (M.H.S.), Joe Sheehan (Ormond), and Doug Arnold (Hampton Rovers) - who captained Collegians? Caulfield Grammarians listed among their best Lindsay Thompson (Deputy Premier of Victoria in 1973). 25 CLUB HISTORIES - No. 2 A.M.P. SOCIETY - One of the "Youngers " The AMP Football Club was initially formed as a member of the Sunday Suburban League in 1961, with Mr. G. L. Pitt as President and Mr. G. Duke as Coach. After two seasons in this competition, the club switched its allegiance to the V.A.F.A., becoming a member of F Section. Club membership increased slowly but surely and eventually in 1967, the club fielded its first reserves team since foundation. The following season was the club's most successful to date, when it won the E Section premiership under the leadership of playing-coach Barry Thompson. In 1969 the reserves team were runners-up in D Section. Mr. Ken Tregear, the club's President since 1962, retired at the end of the 1971 season, and was made the club's first life member. Unfortunately, the club had a disappointing season, finishing second last, and once again found itself down in E Section. The 1972 season saw a milestone in the club's history reached when Bruce Ferrall became the first player to complete 200 games - closely followed by Alan Metcalf. Both players were awarded life memberships at the end of the season. Although the season was not as successful as was earlier anticipated, new training methods, high morale, and the enthusiasm of all players and officials indicated that success was not too far away. This season Alan Kenyon has again accepted the position of Senior Coach and Ray Cowd the position of Reserves Coach, while off the field Mr Arnold O'Brien ably heads the Administrative side of the club as president. Training for the new season started last November in the AMP Society gymnasium, under the supervision of Brian Pollock and Alan Kenyon, and all players who attended regularly are now realising the benefit of this work. All people associated with the club, both playing and non-playing members and supporters, are optomistic of the team's chances this season.
