4 Monash had practically stopped to a walk, but it was a different story in the last quarter when Monash took complete control of the game and added 9.3 while Ivanhoe failed to score. Monash won by 6 goals. Old Paradians put up a miserable performance against Caulfield Grammarians and were beaten by the huge margin of 25 goals. Caulfield weke completely on top in a very one-sided game. Reservoir Old Boys continued on their merry way with a decisive 46- point victory over Old Trinity, who suffered their first defeat. However Trinity retained their place in the four. Old Scotch's accurate kicking (21.9) played a big part in their 5-goal win over Assumption in a high-scoring game. Assumption kicked Old Carey were too strong for De La Salle and won by nearly 8 goals. Collegians were too strong for Melbourne High and won comfortably by more than 7 goals. Kew surprised University Blacks by scoring an 11-point win, their accurate 15.7 contrasting with the Blacks' 12.14, and making all the difference to the result. Parkside knocked St. Kilda CBC off the top of the list in C Section, when they won by 6 points. There were some other close games in this section, too - Old Melburnians beat Old Haileybury by 10 points and Old Xaverians beat Old Brighton by 13. Fairfield had 4 goals to spare over Uni. High and Power House overwhelmed National Bank. Hampton Rovers scored a 4-point win over Brunswick and Commonwealth Bank beat St. Kevin's Old Boys by 13 points. Alphington won by 22 points against LaTrobe Blacks and Marcellin beat Old Geelong by 26 points, but St. Pat's found State Savings Bank much too strong and were well beaten. Page 4 AJAX beat ANZ Bank by 15 po. and AMP Society, Elsternwick Old Ivanhoe all had big wins a Glenhuntly, West Brunswick Footscray Tech. respectively. North Brunswick scored a big over Old Mentonians and St. Be( were 22 points too good for Unh sity Reds. Thornbury scored by points over Fawkner in a high-scor affair and Monash Whites easily counted for Dookie and Longereno In the Junior Section, Monash L versity inflicted a crushing defeat University Blacks, who had score( big win over last year's premiers, Bernard's, in the previous round. University Blues had more thar goals to spare over North Old Bo Ormond beat Old Scotch by 19 poir but it should have been more as ( mond kicked to Scotch's 9.9 St. Bernard's beat Ivanhoe by goals and Power House overwhelrr, Hampton Scouts. In Section 2, all games were decid by big margins, AJAX's 32-point v over Caulfield Grammar being t closest. 14 BALL BRIEFS BIG TALLIES AT ALPHINGTON 150 games up to Doug Adams, Alphington's winger this week. Doug is the player who is invariably calling for the ball out on the wing without an opponent within cooee. Kicks a goal occasionally, misses one occasionally, got married recently (before the start of the season) and could catch up his father's number of matches in a few years. 100 games to John Skerry who opperates on the opposite point of the square to Doug. John is always the gentleman on the ground, plays the ball (possibly because he lacks the weight to be brutal) and is fast and elusive. 100 games to Peter ( Rocky) Hartigan. He decided that gardening is not much of a sport and returned to try out his legs again. He plays in the ruck and back pocket, and makes less noise on the ground than any other two players. 100 games to Ian (Jack) Harris, youngest of the four brothers to saddle up. This is an achievement of unparalleled persistency and we congratulate him and deny the ugly rumours that have been spread about that his brother Peter gives him all his kicks. Jack took almost as many marks last Saturday as in the previous 99 matches. TWO CENTURIES AT MELBOURNE HIGH A milestone is reached today by,two popular MHS players Warwick (Rick) Ponton and Neil (The Beard) Malone. Great friends off the field, both started their careers in 1967 with the Juniors and with the Seniors in Neil (five days the older) has been a most versatile member having played in many positions ranging from full forward to centre half back and from "the flanks" to ruck-rover. Last year he was runner-up in the club's best and fairest award. Rick, last year's vice captain, took over as captain this year from Ian Turnbull (who has retired) and is a very enthusiastic and capable leader. Winner of the club's most consistent player award in his first senior year, Rick has played most of his games on the wing although the half forward and half back flanks are not new to him. To both Rick and Neil, the members and supporters of Melbourne High congratulate you on your 100 games today and we certainly hope you can go on and notch up the 200 with the club. CENTURY DOWN COLLEGIANS WAY Collegians congratulates Paul Munn (the poorly one) on playing his 100th game against MHS. Paul had his first game with Collegians in 1966 and has never turned in a bad one and has always been amongst the club's top goal sneaks. Paul and his charming wife both take a very active part in Collegians' social activities. Mr. W. Mitchell presented him with a momento after the game. His "ton" is a great effort, as Ron has just turned twentyone, and is enjoying his best season ever. Well-known for his driving leftfoot drop punts, Ron is a dedicated student of the game and should see many more years of successful football in the black and white verticals. Congratulations to Old Trinity's vice captain Charlie Fellows, who played his 50th game for the club against Reservoir. Charlie first played for the club as a schoolboy in 1962, before joining Box Hill in the VFA. Since his return in 1971 he has been a consistent, constructive and dashing player on the back line and in the centre. This year he's also taken over from George as the goal-sneak. Well done Chas, we look forward to many more fine goals. Congratulations to Alan Jones on reaching his 50th game with Brunswick. Alan has been a great team mate during his games, always there to help someone. Congratulations to Tom Johnston on playing his 50th game with Parkside. 24 Looking Back By Noel Rundl e 5 YEARS AGO-1968 Ormond paid tribute on the passing of the grand old man of the club, Les Smith. Les Gordon, veteran Power House captain-coach, played his 300th game - the last 200 had been consecutive. Frank Snell (Kew) and John Booth (Old Paradians) were appointed coaches of teams to play Tasmania and South Australia respectively. Melbourne High and Uni. Blacks drew apiece. Another thriller was Kew v Old Scotch, with Kew 33 points ahead at the last change, and scoreless in the last quarter, hanging on to win by four points. Best were Paterson, Findlay, Goonan (Kew) and Mackay, R. Beaurepaire and P. Clark (Old Scotch). 10 YEARS AGO-1963 Melbourne High's star of stage, TV and football, Athol Guy, played his 100th game with the club. Ray Martin, ex-richmond and cai nival rover, was in his tenth seaso as coach of Kew. U.H.S.O.B. opened their accour with a 51-point win over Geelonp best were Migios, Curwood and Kar< nicolas for victors and R. Crilly, I'm ner and G. Lamb for vanquished. Gef long's four goals came from Ian Rei path, 3 goals and -. Vautier! St. Kilda C.B.C.O.B., undefeated i "C" section, just got home from Part side, whose inaccuracy cost them vi( tory, 3.18 (36) to 6.9 (45). 25 YEARS AGO-1948 Old Melburnians and Uni. Black; both undefeated, met in the match c the day. The Dark Blues kicked a go~ against the wind in the last quarte to win by 4 points - stars for th victors were Evan Macgregor an Ted Cordner while for the Black Denis Cordner and Kevin Dillon gav great service. 26 CLUB HISTORIES - No. 3 ORMOND - NOW IN THE "ROARING 40's" The Ormond Amateur Football Club was formed at a public meeting in July 1931, with Mr. Les Smith as President. Vice Presidents were Messrs E. E. Gunn, L. A. Chisholm, and Cr. F. Bevers. Secretary was Mr. W. Coffey and Treasurer, Mr. J. F. Hogan. Messrs R. A. Stevens, S. Dart, C. Ellinson, W. Fancett, M. Scates and F. McNamara made up the rest of the committee. The first committee decision was to make application to join the V.A.F.A. (then the Metropolitan Football Association), although some members preferred the Federal League. Along with 9 other clubs, Ormond became a Foundation Member of the new 'D' Section in Another early decision was to use the President's World War I Corps colours. So the mighty BROWN AND BLUE was born. Looking back over 42 years brings back memories of the depression to many members, and the Second World War to many more. Memories of the players riding to `away' games in "Porky" Godfredson's fruiterer's truck because nobodv owned a car. Memories of what is now the Ladies' Kiosk, but used to be the changing rooms for both sides. Memories of the really good players who went on to make the `Big Time' - players like Havel Rowe, Lawrie Mithen, Dick Fenton-Smith, Graeme Watson, Neil Crompton, Colin Wilson, Jeff Kitely, and many, many others. Success came early to Ormond - `D' Section Premiers in 1933, `C' Section Premiers 1934, and `B' Section Runners-up in Five years after our first game and Ormond were in `A' Section was the year the drought was broken and the `A' Premiership won. A decade passed and Ormond spent four disastrous years back in `B' Section. Now that memory is almost erased by two more `A' Section Flags. Ormond Reserves have always been a force to be reckoned with and have won seven Premierships in 12 years. The Juniors have also won seven Premierships since The Under 17, Under 15, and Under 13 sides have not yet brought a Premiership Flag to Ormond, but have supplied many fine players to the `Seniors'. While the number of players has grown from that first year of about 22 to a total now of about 150, the committee has also expanded from 12 to 33 hard-working men. The club is also fortunate that the Ladies have always "pitched in" and helped. In the last five years alone the Ladies' Committee has raised $6000 and kept the club on its feet financially. Twenty Premierships and 16 times Runners-up, good coaches and great players, committeemen of the calibre of the Founder, the Late LES SMITH, and the tireless Doctor, the Late DR. J. R. PORTER, all part of a Tradition called Ormond Amateurs, a. Tradition known throughout the Victorian football fraternity, and second to none. Page 26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - May 5, 1973
