3 CAULFIELD PUT COBURG O UT OF FOUR KEW TOPPLE RESERVOIR, SCOTCH DOWN BLACKS MANY "FOURS" STILL IN DOUB T By GEORGE McTAGGART Caulfield Grammarians scored a sound win over Coburg last week and climbed back into the four by doing so. Kew continued their winning run by toppling the leaders, Reservoir Old Boys and virtually securing their place in the four. Old Scotch also caused a surprise by beating the second team, University Blacks, while Collegians wiped themselves out of final four calculations when they failed badly against Old Carey, who kept their chances alive. Many of the 14 "fours" are still in some doubt, and the last home-and-home round today could cause last-minute changes. Caulfield and Coburg staged an interesting game and the result was in doubt until the last few minutes. Caulfield did their best to kick themselves out of it in the first quarter when they scored 3-12 with many other shots going out of bounds. But they held on well in the second term and led by 4 points at the interval. Caulfield forged ahead in the third term and when they were 25 points in front at three-quarter-time the stage looked set for a close finish, but they matched Coburg in the last quarter and ran out winners by 26 points. Poor kicking for goal in the first half left North Old Boys only 3 points ahead of Monash Blues, who had kicked 5 goals straight. But it was all North after that, and they won easily. Ivanhoe made Ormond earn the points, and although Ormond added 8 goals in the third term, Ivanhoe hit back and went down by only 3 goals in a high-scoring game. Inaccuracy in front of goal probably cost Old Paradians the game against University Blues, who won by 9 points with six fewer scoring shots. Geelong were never any real threat to St. Bernard's who led throughout and kicked 11 goals in the last quarter for a big win. Kew staged a great finish to score a 2-goal win over Reservoir Old Boys. They trailed by 3 goals at three-quarter-time and dropped further behind early in the last term, but then rattled on 8 goals. Old Scotch broke away from University Blacks in the third quarter and then held the Blacks out to win by 16 points, while Old Trinity, met little resistance from Melbourne High and won by more than 20 goals. Assumption kept with De La Salle for the first three quarters but faded in the last and went down by nearly 7 goals. Three of the top four in C Section had little to spare - Parkside just held Old Xaverians off to win by a goal, Power House scraped home by only 4 points from St. Kilda CBC after leading by 5 goals at the interval, and Old Melburnians beat Uni. High by only a goal, after being 21 points up at half-time. Old Haileybury gave the other top one a fright too -. they led by 21 points at the interval but Old Brighton finished better to win by 17 points. Fairfield improved their chances with a big win over National Bank. State Savings Bank crashed against Hampton Rovers, who put on 8 goals in the second quarter to gain a com- THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - August 18, 1973 P"e 3

4 manding lead. They finished more than 10 goals in front. Alphington's second half was too strong for Commonwealth Bank who went down by 6 goals, and Marcellin beat La Trobe Blacks by 19 points, while Brunswick beat St. Kevin's by 4 points in a neck-and-neck struggle. Old Camberwell proved much too strong for AMP Society and won by 55 points, Footscray Tech thrashed Glenhuntly and West Brunswick pipped AJAX by 5 points, with 7 goals in the third term. Monash Whites beat North Brunswick by 25 points and knocked them out of the four, their place being taken by St. Bede's. La Trobe Reds cleared out from Old Mentonians in the last quarter for an easy win and Thornbury beat University Reds by 2 points. In the Juniors, North Old Boys scraped home by 2 points from Power House, thanks to a 7-goal burst in the first term. Monash and Ormond kicked huge scores, as did Parkside in Section 2. Daryl led the team onto the field at the start of the game and by way of celebrating his 200th, kicked four goals. Lightly built Daryl is as game as anyone and not afraid to go in for the ball against much bigger opposition. Good luck and thanks for your service to Collegians. 16 BALL BRIEFS 150 UP TO A PURPLE AND WHITE VETERA N Congratulations from all at North Old Boys to Damien Maguire who plays his 150th game today. "Mugsy" joined the club in 1966 and for many years was a first XVIII ruckman, renowned for his pace and tenacity on the ground, qualities not often seen in in a ruckman. For the past couple of seasons, "Mugsy" has been a~reat reserves player, with an occasional appearance in the first XVIII, and his form this season indicates that 300 games is not beyond him. Well done "Mugsy"! 150 UP TO POWER HOUSE STALWART Congratulations to Peter Dakin who plays his 150th game with Power House today. After a career mainly on the back line, ^Dakes" is currently giving the Reserves the benefit of his great experience at full forward. A master of the loose man, his unusual pace and straight kicking have seen him boot many goals since mid-way through the season. "Dakes" has given outstanding service to Power House over the years and is presently vice-president of the football club. Retirement after today has been mentioned but he may be persuaded to turn out again next year. Congratulations "Dakes" on a fine effort. 150 GAMES TO GLENHUNTLY'S CAPTAIN Today the spotlight falls on Glenhuntly's courageous leader Paul Valle. Paul began his career with the Hunters in 1965 as a halfforward-flanker. In that role, Paul has often been able to steer through upwards of 6 goals. Switched to full forward, Paul was equally successful kicking 68 goals in To prove his versatility, when moved to the centre in 1970, Paul turned in a dynamic season with strong marking, long kicking and fierce determination taking him to a well deserved club Best and Fairest award. Early in his career, his fiery temperament detracted from his game, however to his credit, he has harnessed his enthusiasm into becoming a fine ball player and an inspiring captain. Paul's success has not come without effort and his dedication to hard training has been an inspiration to team mates, but to some it has been an embassassment as they have not had the dedication to follow his example. He is a fine clubman off the field, having been a committee member for the past 7 years. The club would indeed be strong if there were 40 players like Paul. A final word of praise goes not to Paul, but to Marilyn his wife, who backs him with understanding tolerance. This comes not from the writer, but from Paul to Marilynwith love. 150 UP TO PARADE ROVE R Belated congratulations to popular Old Paradians rover Hughie Ford who played his 150th game several weeks back. Hughie first played in 1965, was a member of the "A" section premiership teams, overcame a serious injury early in 1971 to help win the "B" grade flag that year, and represented the State in Keeping wickets for Essendon keeps him fit during summer, so there are plenty more games left to follow these 150. Well done Hughie! CENTURY TO UNI HIGH MAN After playing for Uni High for a decade Daryl Griffin plays his 100th game today. "Griffo's" versatility has meant that he has played in virtually every position on the field, but he is more at home in defence. Daryl has become renowned for his left foot hook drop kicks and his unique style of running. All at Uni High wish Daryl good luck and hope that today's game caps off a fine season for him. ST. KEV'S DEFENDER REACHES 100 All at St. Kev's congratulate Brian "Bomber" O'Malley who plays his 100th game today. "Bomber", who joined St. Kev's in 1968 has played most of his games as full back for the Reserves. Brian has given great service having been club secretary and he has always been a great worker both on and off the field. Let's hope the cry of "Ever Reliable" Bomber O'Malley will be heard for many years to come. Well done Brian. Yes, there is another 50 games left in you. CENTURY TO OLD HAILEYBURY RESERVES SKIPPE R Old Haileybury congratulate Barry Gartner on achieving his century. Barry's courage and tear-through tactics are a fine example to all his team mates. We look forward to Barry leading the team to the 1973 flag. A fine effort and many years of similar service from him, both on and off the field, will assist the club in its challenge of moving into higher amateur ranks. Well done! Reservoir Old Boys wish to congratulate Danny McGaw who plays his 50th game today. Recognised as one of the top full-backs in the Amateurs, Danny has nullified many of the leading full-forwards. Danny also has the uncanny ability to move to any position on the field and lift the team with his freakish marks. Reservoir will rely heavily on Danny in this year's final series. Once again congratulations, and we hope you'll play many more years of outstanding football. Dashing flanker Martin Castle and rugged forward Bruce McBriar are two more Old Brighton stalwarts who play their 50th game with the club today. Marty is a former captain of our Junior side and his pace and brilliant high-marking have given our defence a lot more life this year, while "The Fatman" has earned a reputation for his strength and clever positional play. 'Macca' is also very popular with players and supporters of opposition club who continually roar their approval of his talents. Rick Morse has survived eight years and three retirements to recently reach his 50th for O.B.G.'s. Hearty congrats. from all O.B.G.'s to these three very popular clubmen. 21 UMPIRE'S CORNE R As the season 1973 draws to a close we congratulate Lance Williams and his committee on a job well done. As President of the Umpire's Association, Lance accepted his duties and carried them out in a firm and friendly manner. Again, as in previous years, we are indebted to Mr and Mrs Fullerton for their assistance to all umpires, with so many new men on our list this year, we have tried their patience more than ever, but they never let us down. Mr and Mrs Fullerton - Thank you. To the Umpire Committee led by Br Brian Le Brock, we also owe a great deal. This most difficult task is welt done by these gentlemen who give up so much of their time to umpires. Also to Mr George MeTaggart, our thanks and appreciation for allowing us space in "The Amateur Footballer" for our corner, and also for helping to make our social functions more enjoyable by the attendance of Nance, George and Peter. Today at Elsternwick Park, Jim Peters will umpire his last game as a field umpire with the V.A.F.A. Last week he clocked up his 300th game and has now decided to hang up his whistle. A true knight of the whistle, this is Jim' s 20th year in the game. Next year we hope to see him waving the flags. TO ALL CLUBS Don't forget last week's challenge to produce some new umpires for us in Mr Fullerton can handle all the phone calls and is only too pleased to do so. This is your association, so how abou t having a word to those young blokes around your club who just can't make it as players. They may make good umpires. Ngxt Monday night, August 20th is the date, the venue "Park Royal Motor Inn" the occasion the Annual Dinner of the Umpires Association. Be early, dinner will commence at 6.30 p.m. earlier than in previous years. Cocktails and flat lemonade from 6 p.m. Entertainment will again be provided by local talent highlighted by the musical group "The Four Knights". Mine host at the Royal is Peter Fell and no doubt he will have some rare concoctions prepared so be ready-for surprises. REPLY TO COACH OF JUNIOR 1 TEAM Yes. Your interpretation is quite correct, The ball should be bounced at the spot where it touched the ground, not at the spot where the scrimmage occurred. Thank you for your constructive reports which are a great help to me, as the umpires can then be instructed on the correct procedure. DOUBLE CENTURY FOR ST. KILDA PLAYE R All St. Kilda CBC supporters and players wish to congratulate 'ever reliable' Tony Sherman on playing his 200th game. Tony was recruited from St. Patrick's East Melb. He was a member of the St. Kilda CBC 1965 premiership team. Retiring from the seniors, Tony played a couple of seasons with the reserves but is now one of the most consistent and prominent players of the seniors. Well done Tony! Dick Evans recently played his 50th game for U.H.S.O.B. Dick has played most of his football as a clever and elusive half forward flanker in the Reserves. Uni High congratulates Dick and hopes to see him play many more years of consistent football. All at Footscray Institute of Technology would like to congratulate Ron "Bain Bam" Carr for reaching his 50th senior game. "Bam Bam" has spent most of his games in the back pocket and is an inspiration to his team mates the way he plays the game - all 5' 4" of him. But he has a heart as big as Footscray Town Hall. Once again Ron, congratulations and thanks for 100 per cent every week. ARRANGEMENTS FOR FINALS Clubs taking part in the final series must arrange between themselves the following:- (a) Which club will wear black knicks, and which white. (b) Which club will supply goal flags, time bell, numbers for scoring board, etc. Check with the home club of the ground being used whether these items are available.
