Congratulations to our four teams who will be representing the Ashy Redbacks this coming Sunday; U12 Greens, U14 Reds, Colts Reds & Colts Greens. This is a great achievement and from the club s perspective also a credit to our Colts squad for both teams to reach Grand Finals. Unfortunately our U11 Reds and U13 Reds both went down last Sunday which brought their seasons to an end. Nevertheless both teams performed admirably during the finals, and all players, officials and parents should be proud of their team s achievements during the season, and the finals. The Colts Reds recorded a big win, and played some exceptional football in the second half. The team are playing well and will go into their Grand Final with confidence. The weeks rest should have helped the U12 Greens, U14 Reds and Colts Greens who have all been working hard at training and making the most of their week off between finals. Results from Sunday s Preliminary Finals are as follows: U11 Green Division Preliminary Final U11 Reds lost to Greythorn U13 Gold Division Preliminary Final U13 Reds lost to Glen Iris Colts Division 2 Preliminary Final Colts Reds def Milestones Once again, we have more players reaching milestones in their junior footy careers. Special congratulations to the following players who will have the rare privilege of reaching their 100 game milestones with the Redbacks in this Sunday s Grand Finals. Aidan Franetic Aaron Binns Presentation Day and AGM U14 Reds Colts Reds Presentation day and the clubs AGM are being held on Sunday 13 th September Attached are details of exact times and venue for each team s presentations. At the conclusion of presentations the clubs AGM will be conducted, commencing from 1.00pm. Glen Iris played a high standard committed game of football and outplayed Ashy on the day. At Macleod Park, Ashy won the toss and elected to kick with the wind. Unfortunately the trend of slow starts for the season continued in this game as the boys looked flat from the start. Perhaps the high intensity level shown against Kew last week had taken it s toll, Whatever the reason Glen Iris were allowed to play their brand of football from the centre bounce and Ashy could not find a reply. Ashy only scored one goal with the wind against the oppositions two in this quarter. The second quarter was a repeat of the first although this time, kicking with the wind, Glen iris put on a further 3 goals without allowing Ashy to score a major. Some individuals were trying hard to get Ashy back into the game but to no avail. The pressure applied by Glen Iris was intense forcing the Ashy players to fumble on the ground, drop marks and hurry their disposal which not happened all season to this highly skilled team. Will Holding worked hard at centre-half back and was well supported down back by Tom Stephenson and Ryan Sgarioto. Josh Halsall was his usual busy self in the midfield and Jordan De AUJFC The Web 17/09 Page 7

8 RESULTS Semi Finals 16 August, 2009 Goey provided plenty of run but the attacks were met with a wall of Glen Iris defenders who repelled the entries too easily too often The coaches at half reminded the boys that the game was only half way through and that the third quarter needed to be Ashy s quarter to close the gap on Glen Iris s 4 goal lead. Again it was Glen Iris who came out firing and added the first goals of the quarter. Although showed some glimpses of what it was capable of it was too late. The play of the day game in this quarter when Ryan Sgarioto kicked out after a Glen point to find Ted Watkin who centred the ball to Josh Halsall whom kicked long to allow Max Judd to run onto the ball and kick an amazing mid air goal. Although this was one of 3 unanswered goals late in the quarter the damage had been done and Glen Iris were in front by three goals kicking with a strengthening wind in the last quarter. Under 14 s Under 15 s No finals Colts This was always going to be too much to ask and although Ashy fought out the game Glen Iris added 3goals to one in the last quarter to seal victory in the preliminary final. Although this result did not go our way this in no way diminished the fantastic year this team has had. This is a team put together only this year playing in the toughest competition in junior football who finished second on the ladder and played in a preliminary final great job boys. Thanks to the coaches, support staff, parents and in particular to a fine group of boys who should be very proud of their achievements this year both individually and most importantly as a team. I hope this team decides to stick together next year to continue to enjoy each others company and have another fun year of footy at Ashy. GO ASHY!!! AUJFC The Web 17/09 Page 8
