1 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 BETWEEN THE FLAGS EDITION NO. 6/2006 How quick the season goes!!!! It seems like yesterday that it was late March and we were just preparing for our annual practice match against Glen Iris & now the season is over. FINALS FOOTY WE ARE THE YJFL CHAMPIONS!! What an exciting month of football we have had with 7 out of a possible 11 teams participating in the finals and 5 of those teams going on to play in Grand Finals. A fantastic result for everyone involved which obviously provided enormous excitement (& anxiety) for both players and parents. Congratulations to all our teams who participated in the finals and particularly to the Under 13 White, Under 12 Black and Under 10 White teams who won the premiership. In terms of the Yarra Junior Football League our club had the 2 nd most number of teams play off in Grand Finals, behind St Mary s who had 6 teams in Grand Finals (St Mary s have about 8 more teams than us). In terms of premierships, we shared the honours with St Mary s with 3 Premierships. I managed to get to see all teams play in the finals and am extremely proud of the manner in which all our players and parents conducted themselves both on and off the field. The sportsmanship and spirit with which we all participated was fantastic. Thank you for your continued support in living the values of positive sportsmanship. Long live the memories of these finals for everyone! THE BOMBERS COME TO SHARK PARK Thanks to Lige Donald(a dad in Under 12 White), both Under 12 teams + a few other odd ones had the very fortunate opportunity of having no less than 8 senior Essendon Players take them for training as part of their finals campaign. Once the word got out, the crowd swelled at Shark Park to see Matthew Lloyd, Jason Johnson, Dean Solomon, Damien Peverill, Mark Bolton, Angus Monfries, Henry Slattery & Andrew Lee all actively interacting with and coaching our Sharkers. The Bomber Boys were a real credit to themselves and their club, spending plenty of time answering questions and signing many autographs. Again, another exciting event for our club that many of our players will have fond memories to reflect on. FINAL PRESENTATION TROPHY NIGHT.JAMES HIRD, CAMERON BRUCE & GARRY LYON What a fantastic night! Thankyou to everyone who made this such a fabulous evening. Special Thanks to Garry Lyon for organizing our 2 very special trophy presenters, James Hird & Cameron Bruce. I don t think we could have finished our season off on a higher note than to have these 2 great AFL players. There was an incredibly special buzz around the scout hall when Hirdy and Cameron arrived and I know it was very exciting for everyone, particularly our Essendon and Melbourne supporters. Congratulations to all our 2006 trophy winners. THANK YOU A big thank you to our Vice Presidents, Greg Sargeant & Andrew MacMillan, our Committee, our sponsors, all our Coaches, Team Managers and everyone who supports in one way or another. Without your commitment and passion we would not have such a great club.sincere thanks for all your support in making season 2006 a great success. GO SHARKERS!!!!!! Best regards, Paul Squizzy Taylor, (President), on behalf of the Camberwell Sharks Junior Football Club Tribute to Ron Trezise 2006 Under 11 White Coach

2 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 It is with immense sadness that we advise that Ron Trezise, 2006 Coach of our Under 11 White Team, passed away on the 5th September Ron generously offered to coach the side around 3 games into the season, when it became obvious that the side was having difficulty finding someone who was able to commit to being their full-time coach. His grandson, Cameron P, is a member of the team. Ron had an immediate effect when he took on the role and did a fantastic job of moulding his team together over the course of the season. The team and individual players continued to develop and improve as the season progressed and they finished the season off feeling very optimistic and enthusiastic for On behalf of everyone at the Camberwell Sharks we extend our deepest sympathy to Ron's family, particularly his wife, Gail, his daughter, Lindy and his 4 grandchildren, Courtney, Cameron, Paris and Laura. The photo above of Ron Trezise (far right) was taken at the final medal presentation night in August, where James Hird presented Ron s grandson (right), Cameron with an award. SPONSORS APPRECIATION DINNER On Thursday August 10 th we held the Annual Sponsors Appreciation dinner at Decco in Camberwell. Former Richmond and Hawthorn football great Barry Rowlings was our guest speaker and he spoke both of his playing football and end of season footy trips. He is remarkably only one of a handful of players to have played for two different clubs who have won Grand Finals. Barry is still very much in touch with junior football and is the Director of Football at Caulfield Grammar.

3 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 Barry appeared courtesy of the organising skills of Ron O'Dwyer who is both Shark player Grandfather and President of the AFL Xmen which is the organisation that the Sharks have supported recently with a raffle. Ron also spoke of the role of the AFL XMen in helping both past players with health issues from having played football and also the role that the AFLX Men have in fostering Junior Football. We also had the Chairman of the Bendigo Bank Surrey Hills and Canterbury branch Dick Menting attend and continue to endorse the Banks support of our club, which the club likewise hopes that the Sharks families are supporting their local Bendigo Bank. With some members of the Sharks committee present along with some of the Sharks Legends, when sponsors were also added to the tally we had 32 people enjoy the night with wine supplied courtesy of Surrey Hills cellars and great food of Decco restaurant. 10 10 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 Runner-up - Phil E Coaches Award - Richie D Most Improved Player - David McF Esjay Swim Accessories Under 15 The U15 Gold team finished the year with 4 wins, 11 losses (and 1 forfeit). Despite winning just the 4 games, the team was extremely competitive and the 9 th place finish doesn t really do justice to the endeavour, commitment and effort the boys showed throughout the year. Of the 11 losses, 9 were by 4 goals or less and 5 by 15 points or less so opposition sides were always made to fight hard against the Sharks. The defence was superb all year, often keeping very talented opposition sides to around 10 goals or less but, unfortunately, we couldn t put any real scoreboard pressure on our opponents at the other end. Goals were extremely hard to come by with injuries/unavailability to our key forwards limiting our avenues to goal. Steve M was the leading goal kicker with 27 goals while James H and Jamie M each scored 12 majors for the year. Congratulations to our trophy winners for the year: Lewie E (Best and Fairest/130 votes) who had a superb year, polling votes in all 14 games he played. Whether it be on the HBF or on the ball, Lewie s hardness, toughness and ability to win the hard ball provided a great example to all his team mates. Lewie was a key to the team s tremendous defensive effort over the year and, together with his excellent skills, often turned defence into attack. Well done, Lewie, on a great year and a thoroughly deserved B&F award. Bryce R (Runner Up/71 votes) another excellent year from last year s winner who provided great drive around the ground in an on-ball role or occasionally from the wing. Will D (Coach s Award) had a terrific year at Full Back, often playing against taller, heavier opponents. Played with great discipline when it was needed but also backed his judgement by running off his opponents and attacking the ball and providing a great springboard into attack. Played all 15 games and only missed 1 training session during the year. Sam M (Most Improved) an in and under player whose superb fitness, passion and never-say-die attitude saw him become an increasingly important and consistent contributor to the team effort during the year in the centre or in an on-ball role. Having finished 16 th in 2005, such was Sam s improvement during 2006, he finished 3 rd in the B&F award. The other very good players for the team during the year were Rowan B, Pat A, James H and Joe M. Finally, I would like to again thank all those parents who helped me and the team in so many ways during the course of the year and particularly Bob M, Luke M, John H, Jack O, Todd L, Ann H and Denise H. It s been a hard, tough year and one full of both excitement as we were challenging for a place in the finals at the _ way mark of the year and, ultimately, frustration as we fell just short in several, games in the 2 nd half of the year. Nevertheless, the boys are to be congratulated on their efforts throughout the year against some high quality opposition in Gold division. I hope to see them all pulling on the Sharks jumper again in 2007 for the Colts and wish them all the very best for their footballing future. Andrew Macmillan GO SHARKS Parkes Banks Group Under 14 Well here we are the end of the season and what a year!!!!! The last month has undoubtedly produced some quality football in our drive for success. Our last home and away game against local rivals Ashburton Green, produced a late season upset. Ashy G had beaten us earlier in the year so they came to this game full of confidence expecting a repeat. However we had other thoughts and our boys came out with a blast pushing through hard all day for a convincing and somewhat demoralising win. Our first final was against Warrandyte and for most of our boys it was their first taste of finals football. It was always going to be tough, and you could feel the tension in the air as the boys readied themselves for the game ahead. As in the

11 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 week before the boys came out with a burst but finals football is always full of surprises, coupled with the nerves and a definite wind advantage it took the boys much of the first quarter to settle into the game plan and their routine of fast exciting football. The first quarter saw us kicking with the wind so the second quarter was the challenge as the advantage was turned around on us and the boys rose to the challenge scoring at will against the wind. This set up the last half of the game which required them to keep their composure, stick to the game plan and continue their hardness at the ball. Well they did just that and with the wind in our sails we were on our way and ready to take on the opposition in the preliminary final. The boys have played some exciting football during the season but the game against league leaders Fitzroy produced, in my opinion, the best game of football at under 14 level, we have witnessed all year. With guns blazing we hit them hard from the start.they, literally, didn t know what had hit them!!!! Our first quarter set up a good advantage as we made great use of the breeze. However Fitzroy was not going to take our attack lying down, and in the second quarter with the wind advantage they did to us what we had done in the first quarter. Both teams played inspiring football and the stage was set for a tough tussle in the second half. The never say die attitude of the boys and their hardness at the ball earned the boys the respect they deserved. Small in stature, but big in heart it was a battle to the wire. With only two points separating both teams for most of the last quarter and playing against the breeze we kept at them till the siren. Unfortunately we could not hold them and the difference was 8 points with a goal kicked right on the siren. Congratulations Nathan O and Tom F for winning Mick s Flicks for our last Preliminary Final, but the decision was one of the toughest ones all year. Best players on the day???? There were too many. The entire playing group supported each other through out the entire game. Congratulations to the following players o Julian S for winning the monthly medal for the month of August. o Jackson O, U/14 s Best and Fairest for o Chris J, U/14 s Runner up Best and Fairest o Dean D Most improved player for 2006 o Rowan N for winning the Coach s Award for 2006 o Tomas R for being awarded Most Consistent Player 2006 o Tom W for being awarded Most Determined Player 2006 I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for their support and patience with all the rotations and rostering throughout the year, believe me it isn t easy but knowing I had the support made the job that bit easier. Thanks also to the coaching staff that supported me for the year it would never have worked with out your commitment. Andrew Whittle, my runner, thanks for toning down many of my messages and for your assistance every Thursday night at training. Head Trainer, Greg Op de Coul, for your help on match days and support. Eugene Smarrelli, my team Manager. With a big, big playing group you held it all together and I am still not sure how you did it. The planning and time spent on the newsletters and communication to the parents has been over and above anything I could have imagined, many thanks again. To Squizzy and the committee thanks for the guidance and congratulations to the sharks teams still to played off in grand Finals Go Sharks And last but not least Each and every one of my young charges thank you for a very fulfilling year it has been a pleasure and an honor to coach you this season Well done and congratulations on a fine year boys!!!! Paul O Donnell Coach Parkes Banks Group U/14 s Coach Paul O on behalf of the whole team CONGRATULATIONS on your achievement this year a truly fantastic job we may not have won the final prize..but I believe you achieved something even greater you took two teams and brought them together as one..the boys will all be the better for it!!!!!! Go Sharks and roll on 2007!!!!! Eugene Smarrelli

12 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 Team Manager Parkes Banks Group U/14 s Round 15 & 16 BM Tech U13 Blue In round 15 the boys had a comprehensive to defeat of Surrey Park. Awards in round 15 went to the 2 H s. Harry C for his hard at the ball work after coming back from his week off and to Hamish G who was competing at every contest that comes his way. In the final home & away round the boys comfortably accounted for St Marys to A particularly pleasing result given the drawn result in our last encounter with St Marys. Final awards for the season to Pat J for a very creative game on the wing, no doubt his best game since joining the Sharks and to Elliot C for his game in defence which is improving every week. Review of our Finals Campaign Finishing on top in Brown division has been a great effort by the whole team, especially considering that we were graded up from Green division after round 4. As a result our first ever finals appearance was in the second semi final against St Damians at Doncaster Reserve. The boys were fired right up and from the first bounce we were on the attack, scoring 4 goals in the 1st quarter to nil. This was to be the pattern for the rest of the day with St Damians not scoring a goal until the last quarter. It was a complete team effort with all players contributing to the win. Grand Final Our preparation for this game could not have been better and we went in the game prepared for a tough game against Glen Iris who came from 4th position to make the Grand Final and therefore had form. As expected it was a tough hard fought out game with nothing in it all day and on a very large ground scoring was going to be at a premium. Unfortunately we fell short by 8 points in the end. However the coaches and the parents could not be more proud of the way the boys carried themselves at the end of the game, with many tears being held back all the boys acknowledged the Glen Iris players efforts and left the ground as the proud group of players that started this season 17 weeks ago. Well done to everyone Well done to everyone that has helped out during the year - it was as much a team effort off the field as it was on the ground. Thanks to Bill for his help during the year putting up with me on game day! Tony for being so organised at everything and I mean everything! Kathy for her medical support and voice! Also, thanks to Richard for his boundary work and other distractions!

13 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 End of Season Awards Despite the loss the boys turned up, even James made it with his broken foot in a fresh plaster cast, to help celebrate the success of the three Sharks teams. It was a very well attended evening with the Scout Hall bursting at the seams. Congratulations to the U13 Blue Trophy Winners for Season 2006 What a fantastic finish to the year. Under 13 White Premiers 2006 After finishing on top of the ladder with 16 wins and 2 losses the Sharks went in to the finals confident and ready to give their all. The last home and away game saw us run out winners to Beverley Hills, who despite their out of the four position on the ladder, were as competitive as any of the teams we had played throughout the year. However with persistence and some great team footy the boys eventually ran out comfortable winners. The boys prepared well for the second semi final against Fitzroy with some good training and were all ready to go by the time Sunday s match at Citizen s Park in Richmond arrived. With the ground rock hard in the centre and a swirling wind the footy was tough and hard. Unfortunately the Sharks failed to convert some set shots at crucial times in the third quarter shots that had they been true would have seen us skip away from the hard working Fitzroy side. The last quarter The last quarter wasn t pretty and to Fitzroy s credit they came over the top of us to snatch a win that put them straight in to the Grand Final. After the game the disappointment the boys were feeling was pretty clear as they realised the opportunity they had let slip through their hands. Yet we were still only one win away from a Grand Final and the boys still believed in themselves and each other.

14 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 Training between the second semi and preliminary saw the revival of egg catching and provided Will C with the opportunity to deliver one of the great highlights of the season. Like all disciplined footballers Will kept his eyes on the egg attempting to take it out in front of him at head height smash goes the egg and accompanied by much laughter from all at training Will was left with egg all over his face!! Come preliminary final day the Sharks headed out to Zerbes Reserve, which with the U/11 s playing before us and the u/14s after us could easily have been renamed Shark Park. In what was probably our best game for the year the boys jumped on top of St Mary s from the start. St. Mary s was one of the two teams that had beaten us in the home and away rounds but the boys never gave them a look in and made it clear from the start that they were not going to be pushed around. The Shark s brand of footy was ruthless in its attack on the ball as the boys physically imposed themselves on St Mary s and refused to take a backward step. In the end we ran out winners by 16 points with two late goals kicked by St Mary s answer to Channel Ten s Strawny giving the boys something to laugh about as they celebrated their passage in to the Grand Final. The only down side of the game was late in the last quarter when Josh T suffered a painful dislocation of a finger on his left hand in the hands of Joe Trapani the finger was put back in, x- rayed that evening and fortunately cleared of any further damage. Training pre grand final was again a light night finishing up with a chat in the rooms about our opposition, Fitzroy, and talking about how to best prepare for the grand final and above all stressing the need to enjoy the opportunity that the boys had worked so hard for. Match day was at Binnak Park in Bundoora and if the preliminary saw three Sharks teams and their supporters out in force, Binnak Park was the opposite with three Fitzroy teams playing in Grand Finals at the ground. However once the Jumper Manager arrived that all changed as adults, children and even a dog donned Sharks jumpers to show their support. As game time approached the Sharks support was obvious and the buzz began to grow. Back in the rooms the boy s nerves were apparent all healthy and ready for channelling in to the games of their footy careers. With season long team rules that saw back men kicking to the boundary, forwards centring the ball, a ban on cartwheels and the importance of second efforts firmly entrenched, the side was settled and ready to go. The boys were led out by our co Captains for the day, Nic B and Tom K through a 100 game banner for Nic and a 50 game banner for Josh R and Jackson S. From the bounce of the ball it was obvious that the Sharks were going to fight hard for possession and not give it up easily, sweeping the ball forward in clean moves to an open forward line that responded with 3 quick goals. Connor J rucked tirelessly against a much taller opponent and forced the ball to the ground where Ryan O S, Nick B, Xavier L and anyone else that could get their hands on the ball moved it quickly to a physically stronger forward line led by Josh A, Nick T, Jordan G and Tom K. One quarter down and off to a good start. The second quarter settled down to a more dour struggle but again the physically stronger, faster and more skilled Sharks continued to dominate the play. Fitzroy got themselves back in to the game with sheer persistence but we still went in at half time with a lead of 14 points. Two quarters down and the work still in front of us. After the long break the boys really had to work hard with a renewed Fitzroy making numerous forward moves in the first ten minutes for our good fortune most of their moves finished in points and it seemed that the kicking gods that had frowned down on us in the second semi had Fitzroy well and truly in their sights. Under pressure the backline still held up with sheer hard work seeing Josh T (with fingers taped) and Josh R refusing to give in. At one point Josh T followed his clearing kick and then ran the ball along the ground out of the backline for the best part of 80 metres with 5 Fitzroy players bumping in to him as he went! A quarter for the defenders saw the Sharks fight hard and go to three quarter time with a 3 goal lead. Three quarters down and all that stood between us and a premiership was how much we believed in ourselves. The last quarter was an even contest with a battle raging largely between the two half back lines. But this was a Sharks team that would not give up with all the boys on the ground prepared to risk physical injury to win the ball and support their mates. Heads and bodies over the ball were the order of the day and in the end we ran out 26 point winners kicking 8 goals 6 behinds to Fitzroy s 4 goals 4 behinds. It was game over and party time. On the ground after the final siren and then later in the rooms the boys and all their supporters celebrated loudly. Amidst all the celebration of particular note was the respect the boys showed to the Fitzroy players after the game throughout the day the spirit shown by both sides was outstanding everyone associated with the club could be proud of

15 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 the sportsmanship shown by the victorious Sharkers. Josh T was awarded best on ground for his 4 quarters of tireless efforts and We re a Happy Team at Camberwell got a real airing both out on the ground and in the rooms. Thanks must go to all the parents and friends for their unstinting support of the coaches and support staff throughout the year and above all congratulations to all the boys involved in winning the flag and just as importantly banking some proud memories. From the start and throughout the year we spoke about Attitude wins out over ability and by the end of the season with the premiership won the Sharks u/13 White team could claim both attitude and ability as the winners. Well done boys on a fantastic Grand Final win! Philip Prowse Real Estate Under 12 White The boys finished the season very solidly, going down by only 1 point to Hawthorn Citizens and with a spot in the finals only guaranteed by a win in the final game, came out and beat Beverley Hills well by 3 goals. It meantthe finals were to be experienced for the first time. Our opposition was to be Kew Rovers who had comfortably beaten us during the season. The boys prepared well, training with great enthusiasm on the Thursday night and there was a quiet confidence we could beat them for the first time. The 1st semi final came and the boys were really pumped. Kicking against the wind, we held Kew to 1 goal with superb defence and then dominated the 2nd quarter to lead marginally (it could easily have been more). The 3rd quarter turned out to be one of the finest quarters of the year. Against the wind we more than matched Kew with excellent pressure and great man on man football from all the boys. Unfortunately, the final result showed us losing by 21 points,

16 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 but anyone watching that day would have been very proud of the way we fought it out and convinced a win in the finals is not far away. Best players were Dan P, Rusty,Liam D, Michael D, TJ, Bart and Hooky. Overall, the season has been very satisfying as we reached our first final series. The boys trained hard throughout the year and I am pleased to say that we startedwith 24 and ended with 24 boys. As the season progressed, I felt the boys really jelled as a team and their support for each other became more evident. Special thanks to Lindy, Brian and Baz for their constant help and support throughout the season and to all parents for their enthusiasm and encouragement. Finally, it's been a pleasure coaching these 24 wonderful boys and I look forward to going one step further next year. Go Sharks! Ascot Premium Finance Pty Ltd Under 12 Black Premiers 2006 Well boys - what an awesome effort and fantastic result and one that was thoroughly deserved by the entire group of 22 players who like all season have contributed to the team result. A great team effort which is not always measured in kicks, marks or goals but, sometimes such as in grand finals by tackling with all your might or supporting your mates from the bench. All will agree it was a great grand final and to win was very exciting.to seesome of the boys from Kew with tears in there eyes reminded me of how close and painful it can be fortunately our tears were of joy. Tom won the toss which meant we kicked to the grandstand end and we got off to a great start courtesy of a great goal by Darcy. The rest of the quarter was an arm wrestle with Tom,Ben,Charlie and Jamie sharing the honours with their Kew opponents. Edward and Will were both playing well in the backline and Jack s efforts in that quarter were outstanding. Nathan was performing his own heroics up forward at one stage taking on three opponents before forcing a ball up.great grand final play. Like all good sides Kew came back and were able to kick a couple of goals and the game was well and truly on. Tim, who was proving to be a good target up forward and midfield, slotted one through from 30 metres to allow us to go into the break a point down. The game was a cracker. The Sharks seemed a little flat at half time so just a gentle reminder of their quality and that any of those boys who were struggling with the pace of the game or nerves that the next half gave them an opportunity to contribute. Xavier started the third term off strongly and with Robbie killing them on his wing and Matt winning plenty of possessions we were getting on top which resulted in a great diving chest mark to Andrew and a telling goal. Our forward line was getting plenty of opportunities and with Connor playing in front he was rewarded with a mark and shot on goal an effort that was repeated by Dylan right on the siren which was just outside his range. Our backline in the third term was great with Hugh beating his man as did Alastair and despite a goal from Kew late in the term we went into the final break level. Time for a few moves.matt went into the centre and Charlie who had run his body into the ground was given some respite on the wing. Keiran was moved to the back flank freeing Duncan to a wing whilst Robbie went to centre half forward against Goofy who had killed us in that third term. Dalton after a great third quarter, was replaced by Darcy in the forward pocket. A huge group of parents gathered around the boys offering support for one last effort it was going to be cheers or tears. After the opening goal by Kew we were a goal down and they were charging around the ground like premiers but the resolve of the Sharks meant the game wasn t over yet. Duncan won some telling possessions on his wing and Matt got on top of their gun,tom jumped that little bit higher and the desperation of Ben and Jamie kept the ball in Shark hands. Keiran stopped Kew in their tracks as did Will and Harry on more than one occasion. We just kept pushing the ball

17 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 forward and when Robbie marked twenty yards out on a tough angle a goal would bring things back to level.laurie, Robbie s dad, is claiming his goal kicking coaching paid off..i will have none of it - Robbie went back and calmly slotted it through. So with five minutes to go we were level again. The spirit and tenacity both teams showed in that final five minutes added to the drama which was compounded as the Sharks moved the ball forward and Andrew was able to handball over the top to Darcy who watched the ball bobble around till he got behind it and snapped over his shoulder another great goal.you little beauty yelled the Sharks fans as one. With a couple of minutes to go we held on bravely in a grand final which was a showcase of junior football. Fourteen in a row is outstanding but what was more outstanding was the commitment of all players to improve and work on their skills. Well done Sharks!! Anderson Construction Group Under 11 Blue The path to the grand final.. Despite the loss to Fitzroy, we had made the finals and the games against Warrandyte and Bulleen Templestowe proved to be good matches to get our skills back and get tuned up for finals football. The first semi-final loomed against Fitzroy who had beaten us soundly in our last encounter. John, through frustration of the behaviour of the boys at training, asked Clete Blake to take the training session thinking that a different voice and different drills might get the boys in the right frame of mind. It worked a treat and the team played extremely well in difficult windy conditions to register a big win. John s coaching of playing a loose man in defence into the wind proving a match winner. Heading into the preliminary final, Clete helped out again at training and was rewarded with some nice green cans (lemonade?) as the team enjoyed their pie night and looked forward to taking on Kew Rovers. All that junk food worked well as the boys went on to another solid win in another game played in windy conditions. Thanks again Clete. Congratulations The boys were upbeat leading into the big game and at training we had the expert advice of an ex footballer and a very experienced juniors coach. We couldn t have been better prepared heading toward Sunday. Unfortunately though, Kew proved to be the better side on the day with their team right on song. All of our boys fought brilliantly and need to be reminded that they have now played in two straight grand finals in gold division, one win, one loss, an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to Dom H for winning our last monthly medal, to Jay and Lucas for the YJFL league awards, coming 7 th and 9 th in the competition respectively and to Jay our B&F, Lucas, runner up, Ando for the coach s award and Harry for most improved. Well done to all and thanks for a great year. BMP INSTALLATIONS Under 11 White The Under 11 White team had a number of good matches in the last few rounds enjoying two wins of three; with the loss to Ivanhoe which was one of the top teams in our division. In games where some of the opposition players appeared physically bigger than our players, the team continued to work hard to tackle and get first use of the ball out from the centre. An area of focus was talking to one another both in moving the ball around and in positive encouragement for the achievements of team members. During the year the team have improved in many aspects of the game: tackling, creative handballs, shepherding and talking to team-mates. Of particular note is that players were still having fun and enjoying the game. This is a great basis for the side for next year to keep improving.

18 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 Thank you to all the parents for their involvement and support for the team throughout the year and to our sponsor Vito DiPasquale and BMP Installations. Amcor Under 10 Black In the last newsletter we noted that the team had been somewhat inconsistent, with some fine wins, but also a couple of below par performances. It was noted that if we can maintain the intensity from our last game I am sure we can finish the season off well. It is great to report that the team did finish of the season in fine style. A very close loss in Round 15 to the top side was the forerunner to us beating the third team on the ladder by 1 point in the last round. What a way to finish the year. The boys all put in, and leading by a point at three quarter time it would have been easy for them to look to next season. However they showed what they are capable of, and some super defence and great effort by every player led to our best win of the year. The Sharks song was sung with great gusto on the ground and again in the rooms. We finished 7 th on the ladder (only a couple points from 5 th spot) after being on the bottom early, so clearly the boys improved significantly. The most pleasing aspect of the season was the improvement and enjoyment every player got from the year. Steve D, Tom B, Matt O and Harry B were consistently good all year, but it can be truly said that every single player contributed to our performance, which underlines the value of our rotation policy. Our coaches, Peter & Clete, worked extremely well with the boys, and made sure everyone got a fair go. Congratulations to them for their fine work. Well done and thanks to all the parents who helped during the year in varying roles. Also thanks to Richard and Simon, our hard working team managers for their many hours of work. There is no doubt that this group of boys have a lot of further improvement next season, and we look forward to seeing you all back with the Sharks next season for a big year. GO SHARKS U10 BLACK!! Bella Casa Noosa Under 10 White Premiers 2006 The last month of football for the Bella Casa Noosa U10 White team has been a lot of fun with good team football being played. Over the season I have seen development in, not only the players' skill level, but their ability to move the ball and work together as a team. Whilst the skills of all individual team members have greatly improved, it is this team play that has led to their success. Their shepherding and handball has enabled a fast flowing game plan to be adopted. The team finished clearly on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season andembarked on the final series with confidence. The second semi final was played against Canterbury and proved to be a tough encounter. There was a strong wind advantage to one end, which the Sharks fought hard against in the first quarter. Unfortunately, we did not take full advantage in the second quarter and scores were tied at half time. The boys again struggled hard into the breeze in the third term and were two points down at the last break. I asked for a big effort and we came home with a magnificent final quarter, scoring 6 goals and booking a berth in the Grand Final. Grand Final Day We came up against a very confident opposition in Surrey Park, whom we had only met once during the season and comfortably beaten. Whilst we went in at half time with a 4 goal plus advantage, Surrey Park kicked three quick goals at the start of the third quarter which really narrowed the margin. Once again at three quarter time, with a slender lead I asked for a big effort. The boys showed a real fighting spirit and to their credit they came through with a nail biting and exciting win. It was a fitting way to cap off a great year. Many thanks to our wonderful Team Manager, Melanie Anderson, who did a great job throughout the season. Also, many thanks to Stephen Ring and Kym Lewis for their efforts at training. Cheers,

19 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 Jim Forsyth (Coach) The Under 10 White s Grand Final banner was fully sick! And the winners are Under 10 White! Reflex Paper Tackers Blue After cruising through some of the games in the middle of the season we came up against a couple of teams that really tested the boy s ability to lift under pressure. In both games we found ourselves behind (not that we score in Tackers). The pleasing thing from a Coach s perspective was the majority of the boys took on the challenge and tackled hard to win the ball and get someteamwork together. They also listened to the few tips I gave them between quarters to work their way back into the games. These two hard games at the end of the season were great in terms of preparing the boys for next year. Who said Tackers don't play finals?not this year. On Sun 13th 11am Tackers Reflex Blue played a "Grand Final" with Tackers White. It was a fantastic game and a great way to finish off the season. There was a howling north wind andtackers White kicked away with the first 3 goals. I think we got the next two or three to be quite close at quarter. It was a close tussle all day with the lead changing hands several times. Even though we didn't score the game, both teamsplayed like there was no game tomorrow. The game was played by all in the spirit of Camberwell Sharks - tough but fair. Lots of fun was had by all. Tackers Individual Medals, Official Team Photos andcustom madecertificates were presented to the players at the end of the game.parents and Players of both teams then had a BBQ and drinks afterwards inbrilliant sunshine (thanks Alan and Geoff). A great way tofinish the season. A special thanks to Geoff and Sharon for all of their organising efforts throughout the season and thank you to the players formakingtuesday evening training session and Sunday morning game days so much fun. Thank you to the Parents for their support and involvement with the team and the Sharks Social events throughout the year. Also thank you again to the Parents on behalf of Geoff & I for the very nice gifts. See you all at the Annual Presentation night where our four most valuable players in terms of skill improvement, teamwork and sportsmanship willreceiverecognition and trophies. Remember though, four valuable players doesn'tmake a winning footy team - you were all great contributors.

20 SHARKS NEWSLETTER FINALS EDITION 2006 Our end of season presentation Tackers Blue receive their medals. Well done boys on a great season! Promo Group Tackers White Well what a season 2006 has been for Tackers White. When we started the season there wasn t too much camaraderie as the Grade 2 boys stuck together as did the Grade 3 s 2 distinct factions. Indeed the early days were quite challenging in parts as both coach and the boys started to get to know one another. For our 1 st year players the first few football matches were a bit of an eye opener for them as they transitioned from AusKick to Tackers by comparison our 2 nd year players were almost seasoned campaigners. But it wasn t very long before the 1 st year players grew in confidence as they stepped up and slotted into playing football culminating with the Grade 2 s challenging the Grade 3 s to a practice match at training. Over the course of the season we have played and won many games but Round 6 is a personal highlight for me. This was the 3 x game round robin competition at Bulleen which we won. It was on that day that I first noticed all the boys talking, playing and practicing together in between matches. On the ground they all battled harder than they had ever before to win the ball and move it forward. 3 matches for 3 wins that day but more importantly the boys that became football players were now team mates. For those that have seen our team play this season they have witnessed a team that is a very competitive playing a high tempo all action game. They have seen individual triumphs in all forms from players taking their 1 st mark, wrestling an opposition player to the ground with a fine tackle or kicking a goal and so on. I would like to congratulate every single player for their effort and commitment to the season. You have all contributed to the overall success we have enjoyed this season. Your name engraved medals that you received the other week were well earned and thoroughly deserved. Both Alan and I are extremely proud to have presented them to you. To the parents of the players I would like to thank you for your enthusiasm, help and encouragement of the players and team alike. I can tell you the players love hearing you barracking from the side lines. To Alan Tetaz Team Manager, Chris Sjodin Assistant Coach, Rob Golding Assistant Coach and Natalie Golding Medical, without you none of this would have been possible and I would like to thank you for all the help, work and co-ordination through the season. In signing off for this season I can honestly say that it has been an amazing experience coaching Tackers White and also an absolute privilege too. Mike Lord Coach Tackers White. Go Sharks.
