Under 10 sponsored by : With the onset of school holidays both sides were a little lighter on for playing numbers, which meant our boys were asked to fill in for Penshurst for a quarter or so to even up the numbers. There was no issue from any of the boys, because when the whistle sounded everyone just wanted to get their hands on that precious little red Sherrin. Following are some comments on how each of the boys went: Max - always hard at the ball. Never shirks his responsibility in defence. A nice pickup in the third quarter and a shot at goal that just fell short. A nice goal in the last from a nice pass out of the centre. Harvey - strong in defence. Some nice combination work out of the midfield and a good pickup in the forward line in damp conditions late in the the game Sam C - some nice handballing in the midfield. Strong work around the ruck with good scarmble for the ball. Lachlan D - some strong marking contests. Nice pickup in the forward line for a shot at goal which fell just short, then a nice midfield pickup and quick pass into the forward line for a pass into the forwards. Xavier - nice handball combination from midfiled to forwards for a good team goal in Q2. Some good clearance out of the backs, and shades of Cloke in Q4, chasing from forward line into the backs in search of the ball. Peter D - a nice goal in Q1. Good clearing kicks out of the danger zone and some excellent ruckwork in Q4. As ever, hard at the ball on the breakdown for some good hard ball gets Harry G - welcome back "Hurricane". Ever hungry for the ball after an extended off season. Another ruck option when Jasper is away, marked up well on opposition tall. Some nice leads and a couple of strong marks. Lochlan H - another one who's hungry at the ball. Some good handballing skills and a nice pickup in the backline in Q4. Carsen H - played well across the park. Continuing on from last season as Mr Reliable in the backline, but loves the chance for a shot at goal when he can get into the forward line. Solid again this week Harry P - some nice work at every breakdown. A nice long left boot downfield in Q1. Was happy to turn the jumper inside out and play for the opposition and kicked a couple helped even up the score by kicking a few for each side. William H - some nice pickups in the forward line and strong marking contests. Spotted up well for a couple of nice marks. Ronan - good work through the centre. Manned up well on the opposition and also spent some time in the middle with some strong ruckwork Blake - a nice bounce in the wet. Snuck a goal in the second. Good clearing kicks in Q4 out of the backline and some nice strong tackling. Michael - some nice work in the backline. Always in for the hard ball gets. One of the smaller players, but never afraid to get in and get dirty. Mitchell - loves a good bump. Showed this on Saturday, strong contests for the ball both in the air and on the ground. Abe - some great combination work through the centre, just as hungry this year as he was in Shades of Heath Shaw with some nice clearances out of the backline and plenty of quality touches in the midfield. Well played boys. Attending and participating in this morning s game was excellent fun and this was in no small part due to the enthusiasm that the players showed. While last week players stood and watched, this week everyone got in and grabbed the ball when possible. It was very pleasing to see. But what impressed me most was the teamwork. There were numerous times when players would find a team mate and pass them the ball which led, on more than one occasion to a goal or a goal scoring chance. This is important, because no single player can win an entire AFL game by themselves, there are too many opponents. At times you have to sacrifice yourself so that the team wins, since this, ultimately, is the goal. This week s quiz question is: What s the first thing you should do after taking a mark? Page 4

Under 12 sponsored by : Miranda Penshurst Round 2 saw the Under 12 s playing against Penshurst under a beautiful blue sky at Olds Park. The weather was warm and the football was hot as well. The Bombers started well as did Penshurst and the fiercely contested game continued throughout the four quarters. The Bombers kicked the first two goals and Penshurst came back strong to equal the scores. The scoring was neck and neck throughout the game. The Bombers maintained the slender lead throughout the whole game but in an exciting and hard fought last quarter Penshurst got their noses in front and although the Bombers peppered the forward line in the last couple of minutes we just could not kick that goal to get us back into the lead. Losing such a close game on the score board will be a good lesson for the team and hold us in good stead for the remainder of the season. It is only round 2 team and plenty of matches to go but our competitiveness on the first two rounds has been really pleasing. I am really proud of the whole team and we had the luxury of 5 reserves today and all players gave a great effort and listened to instructions throughout. Special mentions must go to Josh Moors who ran all game and played the rovers role very well. Jay Scarra, Tim Everitt and Tim Manchester were brilliant in defence and constantly repelled the Penshurst attack. Travis Harvey was excellent also in and around the packs and gathered a lot of possessions. Josh Hollands took some great marks in the forwards and a highlight was an overhead mark over a much taller opponent. Ellen Soffe played really well and was always at the ball and never giving the opposition an inch and Annie Tegg had a brilliant game in gathering possessions and her tackling and determination was a real highlight. My thanks to all the parents/grandparents for their wonderful support of the team, it is very much appreciated. I very much appreciate Heidi Simpson doing the Team Manager role for the game even though Tom was not playing, that was fantastic Heidi. Sean Parmenter was great again as runner for the team and he covered a lot of ground. Steve Hooker was really good behind goals as goal umpire. Well done team, keep your heads up, the good thing about footy is that there is always the next round to make up for any disappointment with a loss. Go the Bombers! Chris Harrison Page 5

Under 14 sponsored by : Miranda Penshurst Well done to the 14's today. That might sound weird after a loss but our grit and determination as a team shone through today on many occasions. We beat them with run and skill in the first quarter, in old school terms it was champagne football. They muscled up in the second and third quarters evening up the score but in the last quarter against the wind the Bombers fought back to be in the lead right before the siren. Penshurst needed a mark and goal inside the 50 and one of their team became the lucky one to snatch a victory right on the siren. It was a great game to watch and I have never seen this playing group play better than in the first and last quarters of this match. Some guys really stood up today and played outside themselves. David took strong contested marks across half back often in two on one situations. Che our captain for the day was outstanding running the centres with hard ball gets and hitting contests at pace. Brandon played gutsy too and his running goal from the half forward line was the kind of champions. Jack was able to keep one of the best full forwards in the comp to no goals. Running off his player when needed and putting body on him restricting his leap also at the right times. We had tired and injured players like Joel, Dom and Ben who gritted their teeth and went back on to perform roles for the team. Dom's tackle in the last quarter was inspirational. Coming from nowhere he hit the contest and got a free kick for holding the ball. Team wise a lot went right. Players evaded tackles and played on at smart times. Matt, Brandon, Nick and Che did these many times. Forwards got in front and took good marks - Braydon, Peter and Harry. Hunter got on the end of some deep kicks converting twice. Anthony showed poise in the backline taking his time to make sure his possessions got to team mates or advantage. Henry got more ball in the backline and along with Liam used their muscle well back there along with Ethan who was clever on much taller players. Our rucks Ryan, Kristian and Julian also went well winning lots of hit outs. Riley played well in his role as a 2nd Centre half back and Macca and Jackson got in and under showing their courage. Goal scorers Hunter 2, Dom 1, Brandon 1 (His first goal for the Bombers, well done) Man of the match went to David for his work in the backline. On a number of occasions his contested marks at half back held our opposition up and turned their attack around. Kicking long into the forward line he was a major reason we had opportunities to score. A great game to watch and from a coaches point of view it is great to see everyones skills developing, all becoming better footballers. Go Bombers Cam Page 6

Under 15 sponsored by : Penshurst Miranda After last week s wet and windy conditions, we were greeted on Saturday with the other extreme - scorching hot weather at Olds Park. Unfortunately Penshurst and the final score were against the boys and they were comprehensively outplayed A score line that the players and parents would all like to forget! Our boys seemed to lose their mojo they had from last week right from the first bounce. Penshurst played with the same enthusiasm and skill that our boys had shown in their game last week but for whatever reasons our boys just couldn t seem to get it together again for this game. Most of the game was spent with Penshurst peppering our goals. They won the ball out of the middle all day and found players free all over the ground. Right from the start of the game the flood gates were opened with Penshurst piling on the points during the first and second quarter. But the boys spirits were not to be broken and the Bombers tried gallantly to wrestle control and at times in the second half, looked like they may be able to score a goal! Unfortunately, the siren beat us there and the boys all learnt lessons today in ball disposal, marking your man and going in hard at the ball. Our boys should be commended on the way they played their game they held their heads high, gave 100% effort until the final siren went and demonstrated great sportsmanship for the duration of the game this they should all be proud of! A big thanks to all the U14s for playing up for us we appreciate your support. A big thank you to all parents who assisted on the day and a special mention to our new coach Matt Walsh the boys really appreciate you stepping into this position and offering your guidance and support. Hopefully we can learn from this and it is not too long until we hear our club song ring out again! GO THE BOMBERS!!! Page 7

Under 16 sponsored by : Penshurst Miranda With 5 regular players out of the match for various reasons and 6 new players on board, a win on a hot day against a resurgent Panthers outfit at their home ground was always going to be difficult. The one positive to take away from the game was the premiership match experience gained by our new players and the impact that each one of them had on the game. Brandon Crutchett was particularly effective throughout the game with his determined efforts to get the ball and keep it moving forward, while Kale Foster s hard and determined tackling helped spill the ball to the Bombers advantage on numerous occasions. Zac Sinclair s impressive boot had the crowd on their feet with numerous long shots on goal, scoring a great 6-pointer early in the first quarter, while Tim Maher s ruckwork, marking and tackling abilities were vital in keeping us in the game. Marcus Mansour assisted in keeping the Bombers in the game with 3 clever goals in succession in the third term. Harley Hill seems to have maintained his fitness level through the off season, gaining a game high possession count and running himself ragged around the boundary to consistently deliver the ball forward. Macauley Crossan, Patrick Heptinstall and Conor Soffe were all very effective all day, marking and crumbing all over the ground. Cameron Andrew was reliable in and around the centre region, leading the new boys with consistent talk and direction, while Luke Murfitt impressed all at various stages, particularly with his backline clearances in the third term. A big thanks once again to our U15 boys who agreed to provide support off the bench, which was vital on such a warm afternoon, and particularly after playing a full game of their own. Thanks Scott James and Nathan Walsh for a good effort. Thanks also to our new band of volunteers for boundary, goal, water and runner support through the game. The season ahead has great potential as the new boys improve their skill levels and gain more experience in the intricacies of the game. Page 8
