1 Panther Patter 2017 Issue Number: 15 Welcome to the Panther Patter Round 16 edition for the 2017 season. Here we are heading into the Semi Finals of Season We are lucky to have five Penshurst teams represented this week in the Semis and we wish them the very best of luck as they fight for a win to continue their journey to a Grand Final birth. On top of these five we also have our U10Whites team heading to a Grand Final this week so we also wish them well. Exciting footy ahead so get down to the grounds and cheer on our Panthers loud and proud. Again Good luck to all teams this weekend and GO PANTHERS!! 2 Under 9 Gala Day at Ramsgate On Sunday afternoon, the Under 9 s featured in a round robin 4 game event at Ramsgate. It was a fun day whereby the boys played with great enthusiasm and energy with an incentive to win some games. The boys gave their all and ended up notching up a win against Miranda Black scoring 5 goals and holding their opponents to no score. Jack using his tall stature up forward scoring 3 goals and Sebastian roving around the forward line scoring a couple himself. All players did their part on the day over the 4 games and special mention to Henry and Samuel who got off their sick beds and played their part. All in all it s been a great year by the Under 9 s with some boys playing AFL for the first time with some other boys now veterans of the sport. Special thanks to all the Mums, Dads and Grandparents throughout the year with a big thanks to Brian for Managing the team with expertise. Thanks also to Nick for being the water boy and runner on the sidelines. Last but not least, the Under 9 boys provided so much joy to myself and Brian personally every week, and watching their personalities and skills develop was great to see. I have added some special comments on my player review below; Jack; A great year by Jack and is definitely Captain material (a.k.a. Ben Cunnigton) Henry; Tenacious and a ball magnet who was tough all year who loved scoring a goal or two (a.k.a. Kieran Jack) Danny; another great year by our highest game holder in the team who showed his class each week (a.k.a. Tom Mitchell) Anton; gives 100% each week, is tough and under packs and is ready to move up to the next level (a.k.a. Luke Parker) Sebastian; the youngest player in the team and plays beyond his years. Another great year by Seb (a.k.a. Chad Wingard) Zephyr; has developed his skills throughout the year and come along way over the past 12 months with his development (a.k.a. Tom Papley) Harley; playing his first year of AFL, has really come into his own in the 2 nd part of the season. Well done (a.k.a. Heath Grundy) Ewan; starting to ise his height and bigger body to his advantage and will only get better next season (a.k.a. Kurt Tippett) Kendall; enjoyed watching his development throughout the year and was always the team player (a.k.a. Jake Lloyd) Harrison; a tackling machine who would be a protégé for a typical half back flanker. Even I wouldn t want to be on the end of one of his tackles. Well done Harrison (a.k.a. Dan Hannebery) Michael; Skills have developed nicely over the year for the quiet achiever of the team (a.k.a. Callum Mills) Alex; Has come into his own with poise on the field and tough around the ball (a.k.a. Jake Lever) Samuel; Was a little terrier, in and under packs and always prepared to get hurt for the team (a.k.a. Gary Rohan) 2
3 James; First year player at the club and has fitted in with ease. Well done James (a.k.a. Will Hayward) Mitchell; Development of his skills has been a shining light this year. Great work Mitch (a.k.a. Zac Jones) Under 10 Green Gala Day at Barden Ridge The Green team were excited to get the Gala day underway and from the first game until their last they showed courage and determination to do the best they could. We came away from the day in 3 rd place with 3wins, 1 loss and 1 draw. A great effort by all the boys with most having their best game of the season. It was a day where every team was putting everything they had into the day and the Green team was no different. Unfortunately we didn t progress into the U10 Grand Final but we are extremely proud of how we played all year. A true team of Superstars!! In the very first week we had almost half a team who were new to the sport and nervous but eager to learn. At the end of the season we have a team of mates who enjoyed playing together, and took joy in not only their own triumphs but the entire teams. A pleasure to be a part of this team s ride this season. GO PANTHERS!!! 3
4 Under 10 White Gala Day at Barden Ridge The team had to play 5 mini games as part of the end of year Gala Day, with the top two teams progressing to a Grandfinal next Sunday morning. After a slow start and a rev up from the coach the boys really lifted to win 4 games straight and narrowly going down by 5points in the last game. The boys played some of their best football for the year with Mathew Fitzgerald winning every ruck contest and taking big marks around the ground, Samuel Weightman and Lachy Landy clearing the ball from the centre at will, Benji Lewis playing his best games for the year, Max Haig defending everything and Jai Van Den Borne being a goal kicking machine. We play Cronulla Navy in what will be a tough Grandfinal and would love to have as many Penshurst supporters there as possible at Heathcote to cheer on the boys. Regardless of the result this week I am very proud of the boys efforts this year and the development they have shown. 6 THE PHYSIO BLURB It seems that an ankle sprain is almost as common as the cold during sports season, and undoubtedly so. The research indicates that ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries that physiotherapists treat. Unfortunately, the fact that they happen so often can cause people to have a she ll be right attitude towards it, and do not go through decent, timely rehab to prevent secondary injuries. What is an ankle sprain exactly? An ankle sprain involves a tearing of the ligaments, which are bands of tissue that hold bones together. This typically occurs when the ankle is stretched at speed through a range that it cannot handle. Sprains can happen on both the inside and the outside of the ankle, but usually occur on the outside due to what is referred to as an inversion mechanism. This is when your foot gets twisted so that the sole of your foot rolls inwards (similar movement to looking at the sole of your shoe). Sprains can be anything from minimal stretching of fibres, to complete tearing of the ligament. This causes the ankle to be unstable during healing time, and long term in more serious sprains. Management and Prognosis Healing time for a standard ankle sprain can vary from 2 to 6 weeks, though more severe sprains can take more time. Basic early management (in cases without an obvious sign of fracture) involves the RICE principle, which is REST, ICE, COMPRESSION, and ELEVATION for the first 48 hours. Even though rest is the first principle, it is important to remember that as soon as possible, it is best to walk as normally as you can. This will help minimise joint stiffness and muscle shrinkage that can occur post injury. Once pain and swelling has settled down, strength, flexibility, and agility needs to be developed to minimise the likelihood of recurrence, as well as aid your return to pre-injury performance. It is important to remember that not every ankle sprain is the same, and that there can sometimes be underlying fractures that are not immediately obvious. Best practice is to get your ankle assessed by a physiotherapist to clear for fractures, and other associated conditions that might require a referral to a specialist. This will ensure that you do not experience unexpected delays in getting back to the field.
