1 HOWLER HEVER RTON WOLV OVES JUNIOR A WN FOOTBALL AUSTRALIAN CLUB 21st May 2014 A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINES MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT This month s Coaching Edge magazine is worth a read In an article on Planning Practice sessions, Danny Ryan describes the footy season as having threee distinct stages: Early season enthusiasm. Mid season grind. Late season, which can be a time of either enthusiasm or grind, depending on the team s ladder position and whether it is going to play finals or is in contention to do so. In our junior games, we have these 3 stages in every game not only throughout the season. We watch our Wolves go from enthusiasm to grind and then both and then all over again ever quarter. They just love to be on the field and we are lucky to get to watch them give it all they vee got every week. With Round 4 (for our juniors) and Round 3 (for our youth) under our belts our season is well and truly underway, so there are just a few timely reminders 1. Thank you to everyonee who has paid their fees and a gentle reminderr to those who haven t. If you haven t paid your fees, your child/ren are technically not registered and therefore not insured. You play at your own risk!! So please ensure your fees are paid or you have contacted our Treasurer, Corin nicor03@otpusnet.com.au to organise a payment play by no later than Friday. If we have not heard from you, your child may have to sit out until they are insured. 2. If you seee anything that is of concern on game day please advise your manager who will in turn speak to the ground marshal. If you are unable to speak to your manager speak to the ground marshal. At no time is a parent, spectator, coach or manager to speak directly to the umpire. Remember without the umpire we would not be able to play our great game! 3. Don t forget our Family Fun Day coming up on 14 June! We have been lucky enough to have all our junior games at home on this day and we are goingg to have a great time at the den! Great games of footy to watch! Goals to be kicked in our Kick-a-thons I wonder who is going to kick the most goals? Jumping castles and a whole lot more fun and fantastic food! 2 FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Great to see everyone on Thursday night had their smiling faces on and the beautiful full moon gave a nice opportunity to practice our wolves howl while we waited for our turn for pictures. My sons definitely thought I was really embarrassing but I really had fun I take this opportunity to thank all our umpires who turn up and help the club. We have some new umpire s this year starting off. I hope the year brings a lot of fun for you lot. Sometimes we forget that we can t play the game of football if they weren t there to umpire. So please respect and enjoy the game for our beautiful kids. 3 MATCH RESULTS U11 Aspley Black Defeated Everton to U13 Wests Defeated Everton to U14 Everton/Kenmore Defeated Ipswich to U16 No fixture MATCH REPORTS U6 U8 Blue Once again the Blue Wolves were on fire this week. We went out to challenge the Kedron Gold team at their home ground and were simply AWESOME. We welcomed Tom to the team for his first game and he played a top notch game with some great kicking skills and an excellent level of concentration (see photo). Well done to Tom, a fine addition to the Blue Wolves! For our third outing of the season the U6 s were away at Mayne. Fired up for a big game we made it a key focus to keep our feet and what a great job the boys did! Countless times the ball went to ground and we came away with it nicely. It was also great to see the boys continue on with the teamwork from last week, particularly Flinders and Jethro sharing it around in front of goals. Great moments of the game also saw Talan and Lucas S pair well in the back line, and Dylan, Lachie and Lucas C guts it out in the middle. As per normal the 4th quarter got a bit tedious for some, particularly when trains came past, but come the end of the game the boys once again belted out the club song with gusto they even spelt Wolves correctly! Well done boys, and congratulations to this week s award winners Lucas Cottam and Lachie Donnelly The boys are away again this week against the Gorillas, early start with an 8am bounce down. Cheers, Chris. Players of the week went to Mitch and Billy. Mitchell got involved throughout the game with his quick pace and Billy was great attempting to keep the ball off the opposition. Hamish picked up many possessions and is showing some great kicking ability (see photo). Logan performed well with some great running and bouncing before delivering the ball to many teammates. Arran fought hard for the ball at ground level and handballed to Logan for a great goal. 3

4 Hayden has made good progress at getting his hands on the ball (see photo), while Alexander played a great rucking role and had some good quality possessions. U8 Green Lawson takes a mark Max took some good marks with his superior judgement of the flight of the ball and Joshua kicked well for goal while Brodie took a great mark towards the end of the game and seemed to be everywhere chasing the ball. Marking practice at training seemed to pay off for everyone! The defence was great and so many times stopped Kedron Gold from scoring, sending the ball back to our centres, to give them every chance to kick to our forwards. Roy goes for a run Once again the team is working so well together, especially calling out names, handballing to a teammate in a better position and fighting for the ball at ground level to win it against the opponent. 5 U10 Everton vs Wilston Grange Blue Last weekend saw the young wolves travel to Wilston Grange for their clash against WG Blue. The boys played out of their skins in the first quarter with the skipper Lachlan Ryan taking plenty of marks across half back. Our tackling pressure was again a big highlight and credit to the boy s hard work at training. Jake Kohn tried hard in the midfield winning lots of contested footy and Mitchel Cox was a solid contributor all over the ground. Keep working hard boys! Josh Duffy Under 10 Coach U11 17th th May Aspley Black Our first home game for the season this week against Aspley Black, the top side, and one we knew would be a tough opposition. Ryan B, our captain this week, won the toss and he did his best to lead the team throughout the game. The first quarter was a tough one with great tackle pressure and limited scoring chances as both teams started well. Jake got us moving early in ruck, working hard for the game to win the ball and Ethan McCrow was good up forward with Ryan D who had a tough early scoring chance across his body he could not convert. Aron was suffering a upper leg injury but despite being strapped up, he did his best up forward and Max was solid in defence, given we had the ball in our backline a number of times. 5

6 We were down four goals at the last change and after a good chat at the break, the boys came out focused, kicking the first 3 goals of the quarter to put real pressure on Aspley. Will E came into ruck in the last quarter and continued his hard contests, with Mitchell running well in support. Rhys, Tom G and Duncan were rewardedd for their hard efforts with the goals, before a couple of late Aspley goals finished the game. Ryan D takes a Mark The second quarter saw our intensity dropped off a little and as a result, they got first opportunity with the ball and scored a couple of goals. Duncan had his first run on the ball and competed well to pressure Aspley and create turnovers. He was supported by Sam and Tom G with their trademark running and disposals and Atticus who worked hard up forward. James A was solid again in defence as he continues to grow in confidence, marking and contesting for the ball and Tom E applied good pressure. Boys put in 110% against a well drilled opposition, leaving nothing on the field and would have been struggling collectively to blow out a candle by the end. They all played fantastically and should be proud of their efforts. Our best for this week weree Voss for his all round efforts for the team running and competing, James M for his individual efforts in defence in the third quarter when we needed players to stand up and Rhys our best player who work hard all game in attack and defence. James M was excellent thoughh in defence with hard chasing to shut down scoring opportunities as welll as efforts to move the ball. Jacob showed his skills again in winning the ball from packs and Ethan M was involved and moved the ball forward well when he got the chance. 6

The Jumping Castle, Obstacle Course and Horizontal Bungee are booked for Saturday 14 th June between 12pm and 3pm so make sure you are at the Den to enjoy the fun. We will also be having a used clothing stall so if you have any good condition second hand clothes that you would like to donate please bring them along. Once the fun is over you will still have time to head to the GABBA to watch the Lions take on the Giants at 7.40pm. FAMILY FUN DAY RAFFLE Prizes football signed by the Lions and Meat Tray s ZUMBA Raffle tickets will go on sale at the canteen on Thursday night and will be $1 each. The raffle will be drawn at the family fun day 7

8 KICK ATHON Kick a thohanded out this week. Please help your children to sponsorship forms and details will be get as many sponsors as you can. The money raised will be used to fund new first aid equipment and the training of our Volunteer First Aid Officers VOLUNTEER POSITIONS VACANT We would like to welcome Kamaile Shirley to the committee in the role of Secretary. Thank you for volunteering your time and expertise. We are still looking for a junior canteenn convenor. If you are interested in this roll please ART UNIONN RAFFLE This year we would like to organize our raffle a little earlier than last year. If you have any contacts thatt may be able to donate prizes please ask them and let the committee know. Prizes can be anything rangingg from Gift Cards, Sporting Equipment or Holidays. (No Alcohol Please) CLOTHING STALL Would you like to help with the clothing stall? We are looking for a couple of keen parents to take on coordination of the stall including sorting all donations into sizes and running the stall on the Family Fun Day. Have a winter clothes clean out and bring in your donations of clothing for us to selll Please bring down your donations on Tuesdays or Thursdays and give them to Rachael in the canteen. ART COMPETITION The Everton Districts Sporting Club is holding a competition for a mural to be painted on our Club Change room external wall and another to be painted on our canteen. Change room Mural Prize Money will be $250. The mural should incorporate the mascots of the Everton Wolves the Mayne Tigers our Team Names and Team Colours. Canteen Mural Prize Money will be $150. The mural should incorporate the word Canteen. More details and the size of the finished Art Works will be advised asap. This competition will be open to all artists and advertised in local school newsletters so start sketching your ideas now. 8
