Archer and Jimmy both stole marks against the run of play, Nikhil scored a great goal to have the fans cheering, and despite Tycho being helped from the field with a foot injury this was Dunstall s best start of the season. Coach sent the boys out in the 2nd quarter with instructions to be hungry, be first to the ball. There was a great passage of play from Archer progressing the ball to Jack R, then on to Ben C. Nikhil was strong in defence, the boys touching the ball on the way through to ensure one of Redland s scoring shots only counted as a point, Johnny tackled hard in the forwards and Isaac scored a well deserved goal. Redlands scored first in the 3rd quarter and the ball stayed in their forwards for most of the quarter. Archer produced some nice spoils, and Ben C made a great intercept mark to move the ball from defence up to the forwards. 4th quarter and Coach instructed the boys to mark up. Jimmy and Lachie both took good marks, Finn maintained pressure in defence, Ben C chased hard, Dylan put his body on the line with a brave smother, and the boys again showed good team-work with Finn getting the ball off to Lachie, then on to Isaac, and Lachie shepherding to keep Redlands defenders away from the ball. A committed effort, but unfortunately no scoring opportunities for the Roos. Captain: Tycho, who after icing his foot returned to the field to lead his team Play of the Day: The great smother by Dylan in 4th quarter Player of the Week: Lachie for following up and chasing all match

5 Page 5 COORPAROO U8 GOLD vs MT GRAVATT U8 WHITE SATURDAY 30TH APRIL CONT D Gold had a tough 3rd game on the long weekend with Rhys, Jackson and Sam away. Finlay & Toby had to do a lot of defending in the 1st Quarter and did a great job getting the ball. Toby with two great marks, and then kicking to each other or kicking into the Centre where George was on fire, winning most, if not all contested possessions, ripping the ball and running and kicking to the Forwards. Finlay went for a run and was taken out with a big hit and awarded a free. The Forwards did get their hands on the ball a couple of times but were unable to get on the scoreboard due to Mt Gravatt s defensive approach. In the 2nd Quarter Finlay, Xavier and Toby combined well in the Centre and had plenty of the ball but struggled to get the ball to the forwards due to the overly close defending. Zac did get onto a ball in the forward line and went for a run but was bumped, pushed and ushered over to the side line and struggled to kick at the goals from so deep in the pocket. George & Heath had their hands full defending against a ball that just wasn t bouncing our way today. The 3rd was similar to the first two Quarters. Centre players getting the ball but struggling to get any effective forward movement, the Backs having to defend lots of incoming ball and the Forwards getting very little action and when they did the ball wasn t our friend. Our coach, Dave, asked the boys at ¾ break, How are you enjoying your footy today? He was expecting some negativity in their response but was pleasantly surprised to hear their reply they were enjoying themselves. Some sound words of encouragement for the 4th quarter get back out there and run hard and get to the ball first, do blind turns to get around defenders and play footy. The talk seemed to lift the team. The boys applied more pressure and started playing with more contact and aggression at the ball. The boys lifted in contested possessions where both Mt Gravatt and Coorparoo boys had their hands on the ball and the Coorparoo boys wouldn t let go even when the umpire blew the whistle. Finlay got another crunching tackle when a Mt Gravatt boy jumped into his back while he was on the ground. The quarter was clicking by when Heath passed to Zac who took a mark just inside the Forward third, as no-one was on the mark he played on and ran to within his kicking distance at which point a Mt Gravatt player was in his face, a shimmy, a dodge and then a blind turn confused the Mt Gravatt player enough to allow Zac to get a Gold goal. It was a hard game for the Coorparoo Gold team today against a Mt Gravatt team with lots of skilful players who played a different set of U8 rules to what we are used to. The Gold boys never gave up all day and continued to play true U8 footy as a team. Go Gold!!! George was awarded Player of the Week with his never say die attitude when attempting to get his hands on the ball. George put on the after burners and got to the ball first or a close second and then ripped the ball from the Mt Gravatt boys. More of the same next week! 6 Page 6 COORPAROO U12 NAVY vs ASPLEY U12 SUNDAY 1ST MAY AT CALAMVALE ASPLEY v COORPAROO It was a wet and soggy day that greeted the boys as they arrived at Calamvale for the game against Aspley. Planned and late withdrawals (Lachie and Corey, Flynn and Fletcher) meant the team would face a challenging encounter with the highly regarded Aspley Gold. Fortunately, our team runs deep, as the replacement players were all highly skilled and ready to go. The first term started evenly with tight contests in the centre of the ground and neither team being able to get it into their forward 50. Jaspa was delivering the ball well to Kai who was kicking it into the forward line which was creating some great opportunities; however the slippery ball and strong Aspley defence was preventing any score. Bailey was strong in defence and putting the Gold forwards under pressure. Charlie on the wing kicked to Jaspa who kicked long to Ruben who was able to get our first score on the board. Isaac and Quinn were relentless in applying pressure to Aspley and the ball kept coming out of the Coorparoo back line. Sam was standing tall in the back line and doing a great job, taking strong marks and looking for opportunities for penetrating kicks. He received ample backup from Callan and the other backs. Unfortunately Aspley were able to kick through our defences and then a very quick second goal was scored just prior to the end of the first quarter. Score: Coorparoo 0 1-1, Aspley The rain stopped at half time and Paul called on the team to keep switched on as the game was not yet lost. Jordy went out and laid some great tackles in the back line, and Quinn was manning up well, but unfortunately most of the play in the 3rd quarter was in the Aspley forward line. Max was leading by example in the backline. Without a thought for his own safety, he picked up the ball from out of a pack and, as he was getting up to speed, two Aspley players came from behind and with their full force pulled him to the ground. Max was in a fair bit of pain and was carried and clapped from the field. Unfortunately Aspley slotted one goal through, then a 50m penalty gave them a second one. A quick move from the centre bounce saw them get their third goal for the quarter. Miles picked up the ball and make some great ground through the centre heading towards our 50 metre line. Quinn and Josh were laying some great tackles in the back line all quarter but Aspley was just too strong and we weren t able to add to our score. Score: Coorparoo , Aspley Paul changed the position of most of the players in the last quarter. Oliver was being effective around the packs and Noah made some great plays running onto the loose balls. Rafe had the ball on the wing, played on, and seeing 3 Aspley players ahead, must have thought to himself, that s no challenge and proceeded to take all 3 on, successfully weaving and dodging past them, and was able to force his kick forward which resulted in a Coorparoo point. After another turnover, Liam grabbed the ball and did a brilliant banana kick through the goals and we had our third. Final Score: Coorparoo , Aspley The rain started to ease off at the start of the second quarter however the ball remained quite slippery. Bailey was doing some great work in the ruck and Joe was delivering some great handballs around the packs. Aspley scrapped hard to keep the ball in their forward line and scored a couple of goals. Justin was fighting hard at the bottom of the packs and managed to get the ball out of the middle. Hayden was taking some strong marks in the forward line. Jaspa kicked the ball in to Ruben who was able to mark the ball and slot it through for a goal. Soon after, Paddy put in a great kick to Kai who again kicked it to our reliable full-forward. Ruben and Coorparoo had our second goal. Matty was getting heaps of possessions and was doing a great job in defence. Score: Coorparoo , Aspley

Both teams demonstrated an open, free flowing game with high skills in the moist conditions. Ayla continued her great form with a strong attack on the ball and Will continued to knock up possessions through the middle. The boys applied good tackle pressure at nearly every contest with 23 tackles in the first term. Wests peppered the goals witih low success to add only 3 points before Harry finished a strong attack with a pressure goal to put the Roos in front at quarter time. Coorparoo to Wests at the first break. West got an early goal after the first break and James called for a bit more effort from everyone. Wests inaccuracy in front of goal maintained an even contest and our defence worked hard in a scrappy second term. Zac and Hugh battled hard against a couple of 7 foot opponents in the ruck. Coopraroo to Wests at the main break. Wests opened the third with another quick goal and started to open the game up with their talls. The quarter was mainly played in Wests half with Harrison showing true grit in defence. Our tackling dropped off from the start but Zac layed a strong one towards the end of the quarter for our third inside 50 for the term but Wests defence held strong. Coorparoo to Wests at the final break. James asked the team to dig deep and show their committment but we started the quarter a bit loose. The committment started to show with more tackling and movement across the ground with the defence working hard. Wests crumbed a goal mid way through the quarter and pushed a few players back to protect their lead. Ben continued to punch above his weight category on the flanks and Kai was strong across half back. The Roos kept fighting to the end and never dropped their heads against a strong opponent.
