2 COMMITTEE REPORT It was a tough weekend for the Goannas last week with only the U13 s registering a win. Mind you they waited until 6 seconds to go to secure the win...my blood pressure is still through the roof. Well done U13 s. With the run home being a bit scattered, with only typically 3-4 teams at home each week, please remember the first team will have to ensure the fields are setup if Auskick is not at Gipps Road. The last team each week should also help pack up so Sharlene is not left to do it herself. With key committee people travelling to away games each week everyone needs to lend a hand and make sure everything is setup for the weekends games. Mark Geloven HP Goannas Committee GOANNAS DIRECTORY We are going to start up a GOANNAS by-local directory. We have lots of trades and business people involved in our club. What better way to help our friends and local community by supporting each other. We will setup a website and also put info in the newsletter for anyone in the club. We will charge $100 for the season for you to give us your business card and we will display it and urge our club members to support you. An example is below of our wonderful meat sponsor Peter Quigley from Pemulwuy. GOANNAS CASINO NIGHT The Goannas Senior AFL club and Goannas Junior AFL club are running a joint Casino night this year. It will be an adults only night since there is gambling involved. The purpose of the night is to raise money to fitout our new clubroom with tables, chairs, TV, air-conditioner etc so it is ready to go for our Family Bingo and Trivia night later in the year. It is very important we get a great turnup to this night so we can get everything we need for our next event and future events. AUSKICK BREAK AND RECRUITMENT Auskick will be starting the second half of it s season soon so if you have been having a great time remember to bring your friends down and sign them up so they can get their backpack too and join in and have fun playing AFL at the Goannas. The next regional Gala Day will be at the club that signs up the most members in season 2. We will continue to train each Wednesday but have this Sunday off. The next Sunday Auskick will be on the 10th June at 8.30am at Gipps Road. NAB HOME LOANS If you are thinking about getting a new or re-financed home loan think about the NAB. Every loan that is introduced by the Goannas raises money for our club. If you mention the Goannas referred you to the NAB at the start of the process we get a percentage of the loan as sponsorship. If you are getting a loan anyway please mention the Goannas and help us out sponsorship wise. 2

4 MATCH REPORTS ROUND 7 U9 s v Kellyville/Rouse Hill Whites Captain: Blake Goals: Tyler Behinds: Julian, Blake Awards: Lachlan, Luke Today we travelled to Bruce Purser Reserve, Rouse Hill to take on the U/9 Kellyville/Rouse Hill Whites. We had played this team before in Round 1 although today there were a few new faces we hadn t seen before. The last game was a very close encounter so we knew we were in for a tough match. Unfortunately for the boys today they did not finish with a win on the board. Although they always tried their best, the Kellyville/Rouse Hill team was definitely the much better side. Some of the rules of the game were lacking in the boys minds and this let the game slip quickly away. Our disposals were not so good and the boys were rushing their kicks and hand passing. They weren t staying on the mark and this let the opposition gain valuable ground. Kellyville/Rouse Hill s defence was excellent today and they seemed more determined to get the ball instead of us. On a positive side there was some good kicking and hand balling and I m sure the coaching staff will work with the boys to understand the game better. Tyler managed to kick our only goal in the last quarter and it was very deserving as he worked hard for it. Behinds were kicked by Julian and Blake. U10 s v North Ryde Purple Captain: Dylan Goals: Luke (2), Jack M. Behinds: Luke, Dylan Awards: Jaidii, Dylan I'll begin by saying that this was one of the toughest matches I have witnessed our Goanna boys playing this season. I was so proud of the sportsmanship they displayed and their "never give up" attitude and effort throughout the game. North Ryde Purple came out fierce and attacked the ball off the first bounce. A strong centre defence held them off with Jaidii, Max and Luke kicking the ball out to the Jacks and Dylan. Jack M took advantage of a gap a firing one straight through the uprights. Ryde Purple kicked into gear, proving too fast for the Goanna's, and quickly gathered the ball to score some early consecutive points. Salvatore, Antonio and Malakai fought valiantly in the backs to keep the goals to a minimum. The third quarter saw Luke come out with renewed vigor to score back to back goals and a quick behind. Dylan finished the game in the fourth with a snapping behind. The boys sang the team song with passion at full time showing they are full of pride for the blue and gold. Go Goannas. Special thankyou to Greg(Jack M's brother) for doing a great job as the waterboy, and to Pam (Jack A's mum) for umpiring the ante and turning the flag job into 5 star entertainment. Once again it's great to see parents jump in and help out. Thanks so much to you all. Manager Karen Rogers I m sure we can bounce back next week when we come back to Goanna Park after a couple of weeks away. Thanks to Alessio (Julian s dad) for goal umpiring and to Steve (Jack s dad) for being our runner. Go Goannas Therese Scicluna U/9 s Manager 4

5 U11 s v Kellyville/Rouse Hill Whites Captain: Johnny Goals: Khya (3), Sean (2), Christopher. Behinds: Khya, Johnny. Awards: Zac, Ibrahim. Another home game for the boys and with three of our players away Jaidii, Max and Luke played up for us, thank you boys. This gave us 15 boys so with Kellyville only having 13 it meant they got 1 of our boys and we had a sub. To Christopher, Jake, Ibrahim and Zac thank you for playing for the other team for a quarter each. The game started and Kellyville came out fast while our boys looked a bit flat, Kellyville soon put a goal away. It didn't take long for our boys to pick up and Kellyville soon had a game on their hands with the ball very much toing and froing, going from up in our defence and then back again into our attack. Both teams were working hard with all the players on the field being utilised. The first quarter ended with no team gaining an advantage. Second Quarter and again a very even matched quarter with both teams not giving anything away, with Anthony and Bilkuei in our backs doing some excellent defensive work we held a slight advantage over Kellyville, with our boys in the forwards staying up front waiting and moving around ready to receive, our mid-fielders were always able to find some one to pass to and with some great kicking and marks made by our boys we were able to finished the quarter slightly ahead. Half time and the Coach and Assistant tried to get the boys up and raring to go, as although they were slightly ahead it was kellyville out on the field looking more alive, so trying to perk the boys up and with a snake each, (thanks to Kerry) and a pep talk it was back onto the field Third Quarter and I think Kellyville's pep talk and lollies worked better, our boys were looking flat, though they still made some great plays the game was now clearly being dictated by Kellyville, who with their shepparding made it hard for our boys to get in and tackle the opposition and it clearly showed us all how it should be done Fourth Quarter and the game was all Kellyville's who were still going hard while our boys were struggling and dropping like flies with injuries. We had gone from lending Kellyville a player (who they still had) and a sub on the side to now two out with injuries and playing with one player down, could we yell to our player to turn his shirt back to ours and play for his team, unfortunately no, that wouldn't make us very good sports, so the Goanna's played on the best they could. Though Kellyville ended up triumphant by the end of the game, the boys did a great job and showed Kellyville what they were capable of and with a little more fitness for the whole team (coaches too) the boys will soon be competitive for all four quarters. Penny Johnson Manager U12 s v Forest Goals: Tait, Ewan, Adam, Ben Behinds: Besharah (2), Tait, Jayden, Ewan, Ben. Captain: Ben Awards: Beshoye, Ewan Today we travelled to Belrose to take on the ladder leaders Forest District. The game started well with our boys giving 100% and going hard at the ball. Ewan dominated some of the possession early and Tait was the first scorer of the day a 6 pointer! Things looked promising. However our hardness at the ball saw a few free kicks being paid to the opposition and our boys started to drop their heads after Forest District kicked a few goals and some behinds. At the quarter time break the boys pumped themselves up again and had to do more talking and move faster. They went out there and gave it their best shot. Adam ran 40 metres to run one of the Forest Districts players down to save a certain goal. Unfortunately Ewan got injured and sat the rest of the quarter and the next one out. The boys had to work overtime in this period and with Forest Districts dominating possession the game got away from us. At three-quarter time the boys showed a good attitude to finish the game off in a positive note.and this is what they did. They didn t quit until the end. We scored some great goals in the last quarter and our ruck work greatly improved with Kushcal and Nick getting the ball to our rovers. It was a good performance from the boys and with a bit more improvement in our marking and concentration, a win is just around the corner. Coach for the day was Martin, Runners were Bill and Shane and our goal umpire was Chris (Jayden s dad) Jane and Therese 5

6 U13 s v Westbrook Goals: Jack, Ben, Devarshi (2), Jonty, Jesse (2). Captain: Fayez Awards: Nathanael, Matt We welcomed another first gamer in Peter. The under 13s are currently draining the local soccer clubs of their players as another boy came across for his first AFL game. We were up against it from the start with Aden and Luke ringing in sick, Jason and Jonty were also ill and struggling to get onto the field. The first quarter and the boys seemed to be going half pace, the Westbrook team were going after the ball 100 miles an hour but our boys couldn t get moving. Despite this we managed to score 3 goals in the first quarter. At quarter time we were down by 1 point. In the second quarter we were really up against it with the Westbrook team scoring another 3 goals 2. Some poor discipline and maybe inexperience saw us give away a couple of 50 metre penalties and easy free kicks which resulted in goals, however the boys hung in there. In the second half the Goannas defended like their lives depended on it and Westbrook didn t score another goal. The Goannas slowly chipped away at their lead until we were only 7 points behind in the last quarter. We scored a goal, then a behind and scores were level with only minutes to go. The Goannas fought like never before with all boys putting in. From what I remember of the last passage of play, Jack won a free kick and played on kicked to Jesse, who kicked to Ben who played on kicking to Lachlan who ran, bounced and kicked at the goals, the ball didn t reach the goal line, but Jonty was there waiting in the goal square. He snapped a goal and we were ahead for the first time in the game, with 6 seconds to go. Goannas win. Amazing...The coaches and crowd almost dying of a heart attack and needing a lay down. It was a great hard fought win as the Westbrook boys were very physical and determined to win, but once Goannas could sense a win they didn t back down. See what can be achieved boys when you work hard and don t give up. Our on ball brigade played their best game of the season. Jesse,Mitchell, Nathanael, Nathan & Jack were in a war zone for most of the game. Some of the centre bounces and stoppages were very physical contests with both teams giving their all. Nathanael made a heap of new friends in the Westbrook team with him refusing to give an inch, especially with a running battle with a number of their on ballers. Jesse never gave up and continued running hard at the ball, at some times on his own against 3 or 4 opponents and winning. His best game of the year. Well Done. U14 s v Newtown Best Player: Ryan Awards: Alhadji, Rhys We hit the ground running yesterday for the important match against Glebe and like the previous 2 weeks had the first goal on the board early. With Rhys back into the middle after a few weeks off, we were winning the centre bounces and our ball movement looked sharp. There was a slight breeze that favoured our end in the first quarter and when the siren blew we had a handy to lead. The break didn't do us any favours and Glebe came out full of running and we started watching the ball instead of going and getting it. A 16 point lead at the first change turned into a 8 point deficit at half time. No time to panic, but we did need to go back to what we do best and compete for the contested footy and not be so static. The breeze moved around in the third term and Glebe were able to have it for consecutive quarters. We were still not able to get any rhythm going and a few 50/50 decisions didn't go our way. We were still able to kick 2 goals to Glebe's 2 goals and with the score at to , we still believed we could finish stronger and win the game. We had all the play for the start of the last quarter, but goals weren't coming. Our keenness to see someone kick a goal led to too many pushing forward and Glebe were able to counter attack and kick goals against the run of play. We battled it out, but now know if we want to compete in the finals again, we need to find our mojo fast (last seen at ELS Hall Oval v North Ryde) and glimpses only in the last 3 weeks! Let's regroup boys, get to training, grab a footy every day and let Drummoyne know this weekend what great flowing footy at Goanna Park really looks like. Thanks to Paul (goals), Andy (water), Jack (boundary), Mick (water), Lou (water), Heather (canteen), Tracey (canteen), Andrew (managing) & Paige (scorer) for the weekend, and all those that stayed behind and helped clean up. 7 GOANNAS U16 s vs MOSMAN/WILLOUGHBY 9:11 (65) TO 12:7 (79) This game was a very big step in our season, to take on a top three team; having beaten us by 10 goals in round two was going to either set up our season or put us back in the field. To have to play them again on their home ground was always going to be a big challenge. This game could have gone anyone s way; we got in front in the last quarter but could not put them away. Some basic skill errors late in the quarter cost us the win. We need to learn from our mistakes and once we hit the front we need to learn to put the other side away. To Mosman s credit they played a very similar style game to ours, they had numbers back inside our 50 and challenged you and chased, harassed and made you earn every kick. To go in at half time with 2 goals and 9 behinds gave you some indication of the pressure they were applying. Some easy misses at goal and three that hit the post was the difference on the score board. As a team, you should all be feeling good about knowing we can challenge every team in division 1. Every game from we must go with the right approach and attitude. Our pre game preparations must be as professional as you can make it. As coaches we can take the hit this week for not preparing you well enough. It will not happen again. Mick and Graeme will be working together on a warm up plan that will not change from week to week. Your own preparation must be methodical, how you get yourself up for a game must be part of your own routine. I intend to step up the antics now. I know if we are on our game we can beat any team in this competition. So be prepared to step up three gears we are no longer in second gear its top gear now and those that want to come along for the ride best turn up ready. This week is another unknown, playing Maroubra who are on top of the ladder but are venerable and must be fragile after their loss on the weekend. With GWS playing this week we will be without Chom and Aiden B and possibly Jack M if they give him the call up. In saying this, Maroubra will have about the same number of players out playing for the Swans Academy. Our player group this weekend should be looking forward to the challenge and another opportunity for each of you to step up to the challenge and play in key positions to cover our GWS boys. Well done to Miguel for an outstanding game of the halfback line your hard running out of the back half was impressive to watch. Speedy was on his game this week for all four quarters and played hard all game. Over all a good all-round performance by the team, let s keep up the Goanna spirit and make sure our opponents know where we are from. A few boys are playing themselves into form Goldie your third quarter is what we want from you for all four, Smitty running hard into space on the wing, Jacko, Rhys, Brent, Harro and Luke improving each week. Adrian and the Jakes work hard in running down an opponent. Our back eight working for each other and our forward line being despite to keep the ball inside our 50. Best players: Mig, Speedy, Aiden B, Wolfey, Jake H, Jack M, Harry Goals: Aiden B (3) Stephen S (1) Jack M (1) Harrow (2), Daniel N (1) Tony, Mick, Gra Gra, Luke & Jenny Time Round 8 (3rd June) Fixtures are below.
