2 COMMITTEE REPORT It was great to see almost all of our teams back on the park this week. A number of teams were at low numbers however so I implore everyone to make the effort to continue with your commitment and finish the last 2 games of the season. We will then need any volunteers from the junior age groups to come and help out at our finals round on the 21 st August at Gipps Road as our 12 s, 13 s and 16 s teams most likely will all be playing. It would be great if we could have coverage from the juniors of the BBQ and canteen as our usual brigade of volunteer s kids will be playing in the finals and I am sure they would like to watch them play in this important game. We have locked in the rides and entertainment for the presentation day. We had a small change as the jumping castle I mentioned last week is not available. We are now getting an Ironman Challenge inflatable obstacle course for the older kids and a Monsters Inc jumping castle for the younger kids. It is shaping up to be a great day. Remember every player receives a trophy or medal as well as selected major awards. All parents, siblings as well as players will receive food, drinks and rides etc as well as any team photos if ordered so it is a very important day for everyone to attend. PRESENTATION DAY 2011 Our Club s Presentation Day this year will be held: 18th September Gipps Road Oval 10am-2pm We have finalised plans for the big day. Team Photos and Trophies will be handed out at the start of the day and we will then move into the food and fun. We will be providing free to all players and their families: hotdogs, chicken skewers, salads and desserts including ice-cream cones and fresh spun fairy floss as well as a drink. The entertainment will include the Monsters Inc adventure play jumping castle and Ironman Challenge, 3 lane slip and slide, dunk the dill machine (with Mark, Tony and Ben prime candidates), DJ playing the latest tunes, face painting and hopefully the GWS Giants will bring one of the AFL inflatable's (TBC). It is going to be a fantastic day so put it in your diary now. If you are unable to make it let mark know via so he can get your photos to you ASAP. I hope to see everyone there for what will be a great day for the club. 4 2012 REGISTRATION UPDATE We have finalised the details of our 2012 Registration prices. Rather than raise prices in 2012 we have removed the free club bag and there will be no early bird discount this year. This has allowed us to keep the prices low and in fact we are still one of the lowest in the competition. Registration Deposit for new and existing players $50. Registrations for 2012 will be available at the Preso day and anyone who pays the deposit on Preso day will receive our 2012 Goannas Singlet FREE. Singlets will be $25 for anyone who pays after presentation day. NOTE: We are also looking for a singlet sponsor for 2012 as well so if you want your company on the singlet let mark know ASAP. Existing players: Full price $130 which includes registration, AFL affiliation fee and insurance and equipment costs. New players: Full price $150 which includes Goannas socks and shorts, registration, AFL affiliation fee and insurance and equipment costs. Auskick: Full price $90 which includes registration, Auskick backpack and insurance as well as shorts and socks for NEW participants only. GOANNAS TO TRAIN WITH GWS GIANTS The GWS Giants Club Program invites all Goannas to the BOP on Wednesday 10th August. This session to be held from 5pm - 8pm will replace normal training and include: * Watching the Giants Train and meet the players * All players participate in clinics with players and AFL staff * Coaching seminars by AFL and Giants coaches This is going to be a great session for us and we will join 5 other clubs in this big event so it will be a great night. I hope to see everyone there. MATCH REPORTS ROUND 14 U9 s vs Baulkham Hills Gold Goals: Luke Behinds: Jaidii, Simon, Haydon, Luke Award: Simon Captain: Jack What another fantastic performance from the Goanna s Under 9 s. The boys always seem to step it up a level when they are playing at their home ground. All game the boys put in a massive effort. Dylan, Luke, Max and Jaidii all showed great team work by trying their best to help their team mate s score a goal. Joseph, Nicholas, Jack, Blake and Sebastian tried their absolute hardest to make sure the ball did not make it to the goals of Baulkham Hills, giving our boys all the scoring opportunities. Due to the efforts of the team, Haydon managed to get four behinds and Simon got his first points on the board for the year getting one behind. Simon won this week s award for having his best game of the season. Well done Simon. Thank you to all the parent helpers for this week s game. We have two games left for the end of the season, so I would appreciate a parent that hasn t done goal umpiring yet, to volunteer for this duty for one of the last games of the season. U9 s Manager Kelly Ann Klower U10's v Pennant Hills Captain: Aiden Goals: Ryan, Lachlan Behinds: Lachlan Coaches Award: Charbel Managers Award: Lachlan After a long break of holidays, byes and rain the boys were back on home ground and ready to play, though unsure if we would be able to field a team. After borrowing Dowang from the U9's, Pennant Hills also 4

5 graciously gave us two of their players, we were finally ready and raring to go. The first quarter started off slowly with our boys having to shake off the cobwebs and with only 10 players they had more ground to cover to chase the ball, it didn't take long for our boys to get back into the swing of things and start making Pennant Hills earn any further goals they scored instead of giving them away. With our defence tightening up our backs and halves were able to get the ball up to our forwards where Ryan was able to swoop in grab the ball and score a goal. With another of our players turning up at the end of the first quarter, we started the second quarter with 12 players and already warmed up we were a much stronger side. We were able to keep Pennant Hills contained and it was a very even quarter with both sides only scoring the one goal, with the borrowed Pennant Hills player scoring for us. The next two quarters continued along the same lines with much to and fro between us and Pennant Hills who only scored two more goals to our one, which was kicked by Lachlan. All our players played a great game, our defence was strong with the backs marking the Pennant Hills players. Our halves did some great work in moving through the Pennant Hill's players and in receiving and passing the ball up to our forwards, who unfortunately thanks to the Pennant Hills equally stong defence were able to keep us from scoring more than a goal and a behind. The boys did some great work and are continually improving from week to week and always have such a great attitude. We would also like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you not only to Dowang who played for us, which meant he gave up playing for his own team, who were playing at the same time but also to the Pennant Hill's players, (coaches, managers and parents) 8 in all two per quarter, who played as hard for us as they did their own team. Much thanks to all and as always to all those parents on our team who help out not only with the team but all the volunteer duties flag umpiring canteen and BBQ it is much appreciated. U10 s Manager Penny Johnson U11 s vs Kellyville Black Goals: Besharah (5), Jayden (3), Troy, Aiden G Behinds: Besharah (4), Troy (2), Adam (2), Aidan S (2), Jayden and Ben Captain: Lennon Coach and Manager Awards: Ben and Aidan S There were a lot of absences (8) this week and it looked very doubtful that we would field a full team, however with a bit of tweaking we ended up with 12 players to take on Kellyville Black. The Goannas started off well and kept Kellyville to only 4 behinds in the 1st quarter. The whole team worked together to produce some good hand balling and kicking. This continued and improved in the next 3 quarters and the boys were also starting to look for players to kick too, instead of just taking a quick shot. They used the ground well and shepherded the ball. There was some great work done in the centres in every quarter to get the ball down into the forward pocket and our defence was strong also. Overall it was a fantastic performance seeing there were only 9 original U/11 players. 6 U13 s vs Forest After another enforced break due to the unseasonal wet weather we set out to consolidate second spot on the ladder against a Forest team who had forfeited two weeks ago and hadn t played a game for almost a month. But to watch the game you could be excused for thinking it was the Goannas who hadn t played for a month. Even though we had a few players sit-ting out this game, there were some whispers of a 30 goal win on our home patch. A general sense of apathy had spread through the team from the first bounce, where we took the easy road and waited for the ball to come to us and when it didn t we didn t bother chasing it with the attitude oh well it will come my way sooner or later, after all we re playing the bottom side. Jonathon, Mitch, Robbie and Jack G were the only ones who were not overcome with insipiditus, while James and Michael (T) showed some degree of effort during the day. Michael (I), who arrived at quarter time, nursing a strapped broken finger, was blissfully unaware that insipiditus had spread through the team; and when he went onto the ground played his usual hard running effective game. I must take some of the blame myself as I over-thought our situation and played most of the boys out of position to cover the injured trio of Michael (I), Joel and Simon, when I really didn t need to. During the last quarter I reset the side to a more familiar look, which acted as a cure for the insipiditus. We won by 8 points. Positives out of the game were Devarshi s rapid improvement and the fact that most of the team got their inevitable bad game out of the way and we still managed to win. Over the next two weeks we play the two sides who are fighting it out for fourth spot then the finals begin, so no room for complacency, we have to be back to our best at the first bounce next week in this extraordinary even competition. Jeff Taylor Under 13 Coach U16 vs St Ives (172) to 5.4 (34) It could have been the return of our first AFL Rookie Player, Jackson Ferguson (St. Kilda) returning to Goanna Park on Friday to give the boys a talk on what it takes to play at the elite level and what needs to be done to get there as a footballer coming from the Goannas. It could have been the DVD session or the extra training on Friday night or perhaps playing football under lights? But whatever it was it certainly sparked the return of Team to the Goanna U16 s. A few red snakes, great warm up preparation and the return of Adrian B and Aiden B to hold down two key positions up from and down the back helped the team balance. The interchange of our ruck and midfield gave us the legs we needed to run out four quarters. Jake H and Jake A have all but cemented themselves a starting position as we head for the finals. Your attack on the ball and improved decision making and kicking to a target is commended. Our halfback line of Mig, Adrian B and Jacko all having fantastic games. Your ability to break the line run and carry is exactly what we want from this line. With the likes of Hutty, Theo M and Angad R to slot back into defence we have plenty of depth to have an athletic, skilful attacking back line. Reuben holds that last line of defence; it s good to know we have someone like Reuben back there with strength and ability to read the play. Jake N is getting better each game and is starting to trust his own instincts to win the footy. Our midfield work rate on was up 30% all game with the boys changing off the interchange every 3-4 minutes gave you the opportunity to run at 100% capacity for this time and know you have recovery time. Chom 2 and Greg M are making a great combination, once the midfield work on telling the rucks where you want the ball they will put it on the spot for you. I can t go past mentioning Speedy s game on and his work rate around the ground. I m not sure if the grunt at the centre bounce is off putting to your opponent or you had the ball on a string, however your clearance work was first class. Mini, Arin R and Seb were great in the centre and around the ground giving us plenty of run and drive and kicking true to our leading targets down field. Scotty, Jake and Mitch all worked solidly in the clearances and supported the go to player really an all-round performance by our midfield. The forward line this week had some zest in there leads, not one out we had three or four leads. With Adrian F having the full forward spot he did what was needed make a contest of everything coming in long so our small crumbing forwards could get to the pack and pick up the loose ball. Jack sticky hands Mara found some form, Rhys kick a bag this week andlead well for a small, Aiden B is exciting to watch when on the lead, the opposition quickly new he was the player to stop and put extra players back to fill the holes. Chom 1 had a blinder on the wing and seems to enjoy the open space. Sharkey was out muscled in defence however improved his defensive work when he got closer to his opponent. Boys we need take our 4 quarters of intensity, running in numbers and skill in kicking to the next level. This week against 6

7 Drummoyne we should have the return from injury of Nathan and Hutty. Angad will be out this week after receiving concussion from Rugby last week. We are hoping on the return of Theo to give us that extra utility player. It s all up to you now boys! You are playing for your spot each week. How you train, how you approach your game is what the coaches are looking at. PS. Nice to know the Seniors are keen to look at 2012 as an opportunity for a lot of you boys to get a crack at Senior footy. I would love to see you get this opportunity at 16/17 year of age.
