In this issue AIL V Clontarf 1 The Cork Constitution Ulster Bank All Ireland League Cork Constitution F.C. V Clontarf F.C. September 2012 Volume 3, Issue 2 We are minors 2 Under 21 News 2 Golf News 3 IRFU Grand Draw 4 Winter Events 5 Tony Ward 6 Temple Hill 2.30pm 29 th September 2012 On Saturday in the Ulster Bank League Cork Constitution entertain last season s runners up Clontarf F.C in the Ulster Bank All Ireland League A warm welcome to Clontarf President, Terry Browne, his committee, players and supporters, and also a special welcome home to their former Constitution players Evan Ryan and Richard Lane who although recovering from an injury is expected to take the field at some stage on Saturday. This season Clontarf are captained by Evan Ryan, a former Cork Constitution Captain who led the Club to the AIL League and Cup Double in Another former Cork Constitution stalwart Frank Cogan unfortunately misses Saturdays game due to a prior commitment in Las Vegas. For the first game of this year s Ulster Bank League campaign, Cork Constitution introduce a number of new players. Pat Parfrey has returned after a number of years with UCC, and he is joined in the three-quarter line by Jade Cruickshank, Renaud Sergere and Paul Perez, the latter are French players who are working in Cork. In the front row, Patrick Galvin has joined from Tralee, while Andrew O Driscoll has come over from Musgrave Park, to join his brothers Niall and Dave with the club. Graeme Lawlor is a fine addition to the back row having come to Cork from Zimbabwe. Needless to say, we look forward with optimism to another exciting season of rugby in the Ulster Bank League. While last season s fourth place finish was creditable, it was disappointing to be out of the shake-up since there was no Top Four finale to the season. We wish Captain, Gerry Hurley and the management team of Brian Walsh, Brian Hickey, Terry Kingston, Peter O Leary and Kenny Murphy best wishes for a successful and enjoyable season. Our visitors Clontarf were favourites to win the Ulster Bank League for much of last season, losing only four games. But significantly, they lost twice to champions St Mary s College, and finished on 64 points, just two points behind the winners. And they won t need reminding that their other two losses were in Cork, to Constitution and Dolphin. Last Saturday, Constitution qualified for the Munster Senior Cup semi final with victory over Garryowen. The 16-6 score line reversed last season s result against the same opposition. The semi final against Cashel is scheduled for Saturday 13th October at Temple Hill.. Saturday sees the first function in the new Clubhouse with the Prematch Luncheon. We welcome our guest speaker, Ray Hennessy, who has a unique record in the Club, as the only player to captain Munster Junior & Senior Cup winning teams, in 1957 and Back then, the All Ireland League concept was a long way off, but those Cup wins over Young Munster and Garryowen respectively both at Thomond Park and in the club s first finals at the iconic venue marked the start of some unprecedented success for the club, that culminated in winning the first All Ireland League title, just in time for the Club s Centenary in 1991/92 season. Last season Ray was presented with the Munster Rugby Hall of Fame Award After the match enjoy the Ryder Cup in the comfort of the new club house, with three well positioned TV's. On Sunday our J2 s play Dolphin in the final of the Dennehy Cup at 12:00 in Highfield. Your support would be greatly appreciated by all of the players and team management. MUNSTER HEINEKEN CUP MATCHES Tickets are now available to purchase for Munster s Home Heineken Cup Matches. Please contact Jim Murphy Safety Notice Patrons will be aware that the Clubhouse Building project is still in progress. We would ask all patrons to observe safety notices and refrain from entering the construction site. As the surface of some pathways are uneven please mind your footing. Please note until further notice there is Restricted Parking in Temple Hill on Match Days. We request that match patrons respect our neighbours by not parking on the double yellow lines outside local housing estates Page 1

WE ARE MINORS!!!!!!! U 21 s retain Ellickson Tournament Waterpark RFC Ellickson U21 Tournament Waterpark RFC Saturday 15th September 2012 Cork Constitution U21 XV retained the Ellickson Trophy at the Waterpark RFC annual U21 tournament last Saturday. Constitution lost their first match 0-3 to a very strong Terenure College side but showed great strength of character to recover from this early set back and battled their way through to the final with comprehensive wins over Dolphin 21-0, hosts Waterpark 17-0 and Highfield At this year s AGM Director of Rugby, Jerry Holland, informed the meeting that a greater emphasise, will be placed on our J2 (minor) side for the coming season. With Jerry s support and encouragement, he was responsible for putting together a very Strong and Experienced, coaching and management Team. Coaches : Eric Tracey, Eoin Quinlan, Packie Derham. Selectors: Don Mullins, Colm Murphy, Padraig Higgins. Team Secretary: Joe Griffin. Captain: Kevin Minihan. Manager: Der O Riordan. Mascot: Jack O Riordan In the final Constitution met Terenure College for the second time and after a great game of rugby emerged victorious on a score line of With this achieved and in place, it was now the in the hands of the New coaching and management team to put in place a structure, which would encourage players to commit to training and matches for the year. One of the first new policies the players bought into was RESPECT respect for other Players, respect for Club, respect for Coaches, and all agreed this was the way forward. This has led to very strong numbers training on Tuesday and Thursday nights, where the coaches are working the players extremely hard on their fitness, which is money in the bank for the long season ahead. Goals have been set for the coming season, the first of which is a good run in the Dennehy Cup, followed very quickly by the South Munster League and Cup with qualification for the full Munster League competition. It goes without saying that a strong Minor structure is imperative for players coming out of an extremely organised and competitive Under 21 level. Player retention is vital as players develop at different stages of their rugby playing career, and this new structure is now in place to prepare players to step up to J1 with regard to their own Fitness and Skill levels. It is also a level where players can enjoy Rugby and commit their time to suit family, work, and study commitments. It has been proven over the years that great clubmen and administrators have emanated from this important section of the Club.So hears to a very enjoyable season, both on and off the pitch, which will only lead to the Minor section growing stronger and stronger over the coming years. Remember what Noel Murphy always used to say RUGBY IS ALL ABOUT MAK- ING FRIENDS and in the current economic climate these friends will be invaluable. Der O Riordan Page 2 Squad: S.Keohane, R.Fenton, S.Hartnett, S.Glynn, G.Murray, B.Monahan, P.O Leary, E.Quirke; C.Keane, J.Rochford, P.O Sullivan, R.Daly, C.Scannell, M.O Mahony, Y.Browne, D.Nolan, P.Derham, L.O Brien, B.Ferguson, R.McLoughlin. Constitution open their U 21 South-western Conference campaign with a home fixture against Corinthians-NUIG on Saturday 6 October. Getting ready for the New Season Visitors to the new Clubhouse will have been impressed by the various fitness activities taking in the new hall from Kaizen Karate Club to VIBRA fitness. Pictured recently getting ready for the new season were Don O Riordan, Finian O Driscoll and Ian O Leary Pitchside Hoardings Our Pitchside Hoardings are a valued source of income to the Club and a number of spaces are available for the coming season. If you are interested in becoming a Hoarding Sponsor please contact Fiona Burke at or corkcon@eircom.net

Golf News Don O Riordan s Captains Prize The Cork Con Golf Society recently held their Captains Prize at Douglas Golf Club. There was a great turnout for Don s prize with 44 golfers enjoying the glorious weather. Douglas golf course was in terrific condition and a great day was had by all. Despite an afternoon tee time and the early sun set great organisation by Colm Murphy insured that all 44 golfers finished without the need to use car headlights to illuminate the 18Th. The golfers enjoyed an excellent meal in Douglas Golf Club and the presentation of prizes took place after the Ulster V Munster Game. Pat O Keeffe did a great job checking the cards despite the distraction of watching the Munster Match. Don O Riordan presented his prize to Senior Vice President Ian O Leary who had a magnificent score of 39 points and just piped Paul Walsh who also had 39 points on the back nine. Scoring was very close with only two shots separating the top 6 golfers Don made a special presentation to Flor O Leary who despite playing great golf was just outside of the prizes. Flor accepted the award on the condition that it would not be mentioned in the newsletter as a Veteran's Prize Don nominated Conor Clune as incoming Captain of the Golf Society. Don O Riordan, Pat Twomey, Cully Murphy Conor Clune and Noel Walsh or corkcongolf@gmail.com Golf Joke Pat Twomey A couple of old guys were golfing when one said he was going to Dr. Taylor for a new set of dentures in the morning. His friend remarked that he had gone to the same dentist a few years before. "Is that so?" the first said. "Did he do a good job?" "Well, I was on the course yesterday when the fellow on the ninth hole hooked a shot," he said. "The ball most have been going 200 mph when it hit me in the stomach. That," he added, "was the first time in two years my teeth didn't hurt."

Cork Constitution is participating in Your Club Your Country' a IRFU fundraising mechanism for rugby clubs. We hope to sell 1,000 tickets for the draw with all of the proceeds being retained by the Club Volunteers Required Cork Constitutions Football Club is a Rugby Club with a proud history and tradition which is a great source of pride to all involved. We have set the standard for youth, mini and senior rugby for many years and the care and attention dedicated to teaching our mini children on a Saturday morning is a credit to parents and coaches alike, and the contribution our club makes to our local community is often overlooked. Cork Constitution has always considered itself a members club and we want to get our unique community of members together and volunteering on a regular or semi-regular basis. We have a great team of people looking after various areas in the club from coaching and managing teams from underage to senior, house and grounds, the shop, bar and fund raising to mention a few. (Please note that prizes may be subject to change and without any notice given by the IRFU) Please support this draw as part of the ticket sales proceeds are being used to fund our under-age section Pat Twomey But once the season begins, things will get a little stretched - and that s when we could do with an extra few bodies. Ideally we d like to spread some of the load of work from our current team of volunteers and get more of the members involved in running their club. No matter what your talents and level of time you can give, you will be able to make a difference to your Club. If you are interested in helping out please contact Finian O Driscoll or Ian O Leary

W i n t e r E v e n t s With the advent of the new clubhouse we are running a number of events over the winter for all members of the family and we encourage you to keep an eye on our newsletters, web site, which is in the process of a revamp, Facebook and the club notice board. In October we have a busy schedule with Munster Senior Cup Semi Final weekend. The following week is Jazz Weekend and we are planning an activity filled weekend commencing with a Food and Wine Fare on the 26th which promises to be another great night following on the success of the Italian Food and Wine Night from last March. John O'Mahony is putting the final touches to what promises to be a great night. On the Saturday, the following day, Young Munster come to Temple Hill and we look forward to another AIL Jazz Saturday. We will be having activities for all the family and of course jazz included. In November we continue with an action packed agenda, commencing on AIL Floodlit Friday vs. Dolphin and we return to our Ladies Fundraising Evening. There will be a Ladies Tea and we are looking forward to a great night with many of our lady members, friends and family from Cork Con and Dolphin. There will also be food for the male counterparts in the main bar followed by the third match against Dolphin so far this season, promises to be a great night. New Club House Update The work on the new Clubhouse, which commenced in March, is now close to completion. The Clubhouse itself is largely finished, except for some fitting out to be completed in the next week or two. The new kitchen has been installed and it will be in use for the first Ulster Bank Ail game of the season. There is still some construction work taking place on the Dressing Rooms and Player s Gym building. Considerable progress has been made on the new gym with the block work and roof in place. When the structure of the building is completed the tarmac finish can be applied to the paths and roadways. Later in the month on the 16th will be the ever popular Minor Night with this years keynote address from Ross O'Dowling, who is now on the search for stories, so be aware when you are chatting to Ross. Always a highlight in the club year is the Minor Night and one not to be missed. In December as always it's action packed starting with Shannon on the 1st and the lunch committee will be organising a Christmas Lunch on that day followed by Christmas drinks after the match to kick off the festive season. On the 7th the President and Captain's Dinner, the 1st in the new clubhouse takes place and we await news on Finian's Keynote Speaker for this event. This promises to be a great night and we look forward to getting into the Christmas spirits in our new environment. The followings week we will have our Christmas Giving Tree with the annual Christmas Kids Party, we still looking for a volunteer to wear the red suit, all applications welcome. We finish the December activities with our annual Con v College Stephens Day Match for the Crowley Cup and we look forward to welcoming College to our new clubhouse for our annual get together. We look forward to any events members wish to include that are not mentioned above. We have a new clubhouse and we need to get maximum return from all the hard work that went into getting it to where it is today. We want all members to get the maximum return from a fantastic facility and we encourage all members to use it in as many ways as possible. Enjoy the coming months and if you have ideas for events please let us know and we will endeavour to put it into the schedule. Tony O Connor If you have any news item, event details or article you would like published The Cork Constitution or Matchzine please forward to Pat Twomey at PATT@Ireland.com All contributions are more then welcome especially since I am running out of jokes to fill the odd gap in the news letter.
